Took over as landlord on a building my relative lived in and then began renovating the building. Since thier apt was in disrepair and actually rotten in many places, we hoped he would do ours next. He did not and refused to even come to repair anything. All parties agreed that moving out was a great option so he could renovate the apt. He told them he would get their security deposit back to them since they were doing him a favor moving out early. He has never answered one text, email or phone calls concerning this. We hired an attorney and he told the attorney that he did not have to pay the security deposit because my family member was late every month, thus they actually owe him late fees that equal the security deposit. Not true. He will not return phone calls still and still refuses to give us any of our deposit back, return phone calls or emails. In my opinion, he feels my family member was a 'dumb' college kid who won't contunue this but I feel it is my duty to warn people that this man is doing business this way. He must think he is above the VA Tenant Laws that require him to comply. This is strictly my opinion.
