I had a laptop that died. It wouldn't turn on, it wouldn't do anything. I bought it from a large office supply store in the West End several years before, so it was no longer under warranty. I took it back for repair. They called me a couple of days later to advise that it needed a new motherboard. The cost would be around $400. It was suggested that I might as well just buy another computer. I got a second opinion from another large computer store. They called me later and said that my laptop needed a new motherboard, at a cost of about $350. They said that, at that cost, I should just get a new laptop. I wanted to try one more place, preferably in the West End, so it would be close by. So I looked in the Yellow Pages, and found a small listing on West Broad St, called CC Computers. I called + got Monty, the owner. He said to come in + he would take a look at my laptop. So I did. I explained that I had already taken it to 2 other places, and a new motherboard was recommended. So he tested the laptop. He said that, Yes, a new motherboard would solve the problem, HOWEVER, it could also be fixed at less cost by replacing a part, which he could order and install for me. He compared it to taking a car to a repair shop, and the car won't run because it needs new valves. Replacing the entire engine would certainly solve the problem, but it's not necessary. Just replacing the valves would solve the problem. So I left the laptop with him, and a few days later, he called to let me know it was ready to go. The cost was about $125, and the laptop was as good as new. I asked Monty about his background in computers, and he said he had done a lot of computer security and IT when he served in the military. I found Monty to be extremely competent, highly skilled, and very honest and reasonable. I have shared my experience with friends who have had similar issues with their computers. They go to a large computer store for assistance, and they are told that the computer has to be shipped off for diagnostics, for about $100 to start, plus the cost of the recommended repairs. Then they go to CC Computers, and Monty can fix their computer problems at a much lower cost. He does it all right there in his shop. This place is a hidden gem, in the rough. Its can't be seen from West Broad Street- it is behind Outback Steakhouse near Hungary Rd. The shop is very modest-- no frills, but all skills! The low overhead costs are passed on to the customer in savings. So if your computer has issues-- viruses, or other problems, try CC Computers before you decide you need a new computer. You will get an honest, competent and reasonable evaluation and repair. I was extremely pleased with my experience. It's a bit hard to find-- the address is 7921-A West Broad St (Behind Outback), and phone is (804) 218-5896.
