Owner came with an estimate within 48 hours of call. Work was completed in a couple of days. He stayed on site supervising a team of 5 guys. Everyone was professional and friendly. He was good about answering all of my questions and explaining the process. Alan was meticulous about the work and they did a great job cleaning up afterwards.

I wanted to work with this provider because he has received such good reviews. I think he probably got higher paying jobs after agreeing to fix my porch and put me at the back of the list. He seems like a nice person but I need the job done and will move on.

Mr. Williams came twice to inspect the jobs and give us estimates. The proposals were thorough and reasonable. The work crew came early and worked late; they were expeditious and professional. Mr. Williams stopped by frequently to check on progress. The jobs took about 10 days to complete. The grinding out work was noisy and created a lot of dust, but the crew did a good job of cleaning up. The garage work was subject to city inspection and passed with flying colors. We would definitely use AW Masonry & Restoration again and would recommend this company to anyone.

The work was super excellent--I can't praise the job highly enough. The porch looks new, the joint on the retaining wall looks great, and the brick and mortar replaced around the window matches the existing brick so perfectly that you literally can't tell that any work has been done except that the window looks correct now. Considering that the house was built in 1965, matching everything so expertly was no small feat. It was a true pleasure working with someone who is so skilled and careful with their work and shows up when they say they will. If I ever need anything else, I will definitely use this company again.

The service went well. Alan was great to work with and was always good at returning phone calls, giving estimates, discussing problems, and he followed through on everything he said he would. The only reason for a B is that I have a dip in my concrete pad that has standing water in it when it rains, but it's only in one spot. Everything else is holding up great, and it was a good experience.

AW Masonry did not give me the least expensive quote, but Alan and his workers absolutely proved the adage you get what you pay for. Since some of the work was going to be visible from the street I wanted a pro rather than a handyman. Alan was the only masonry contractor who returned my calls/emails without delay and answered all my questions. He provided free estimates. He even came back to the house a second time to review and adjust his first quote, and personally drove me to another house in the neighborhood so I could see the quality of his work. He started my job earlier than expected (after first asking my permission), and his workers finished on time, cleaned up the area, and were extremely courteous. Alan is aware of and obviously takes pride in his high Angie's List ranking. I didn't mind spending a little extra money for this job because it bought me substantial peace of mind that it would be done right with no hassle, and that's exactly what happened. The quality of the work was excellent; the replaced brick/mortar on the side of the house were nearly indistinguishable from the original on my 50 year old house. The re-tucked mortar on the porch steps was not an exact match, which Alan himself highlighted to me as we reviewed the work at the end of the job. Alan made it clear that if he would return if I was not happy. However, I was pleased with it...Alan seemed more bothered by it than me. I highly recommend AW Masonry.
Description of Work: Re-tucked mortar and replaced missing/damage brickwork on three porches (front, side, and back) and street-level walkway steps. Replaced several foundation vents. Replaced areas of cracked bricks in front and side of house. Re-set metal handrail in cement.

We couldn't be more pleased with the performance and quality of work from Alan Williams and his crew. Although there was a somewhat lengthy lead time of approximately 3 months before the job was started, it was definitely worth the wait. The old concrete sidewalk and slab in front of the garage were completely removed and replaced, and the repairs to the front and side steps makes them look practically new. They completed the job within a few days, and finished with a light power wash and a complete clean-up of the job site. They even followed up a month later, as promised, to check the condition of the new concrete and to lay a small strip of asphalt to fill a gap between the new sidewalk and driveway - something they weren't required to do, but shows the professionalism of the company. We highly recommend AW Masonry and will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced a front sidewalk, which was cracked and was crumbling. Removed and replaced a 3 x 10 foot concrete slab in front of the garage. Repaired the front and side steps, replaced missing mortar and cracked bricks.

We contacted Alan on a Saturday and they started the following week. They worked around the weather and made sure that the project was done quickly and neatly. They picked up after themselves after each day. The sidewalk turned out awesome. Beyond our expectations. Alan made the changes and modifications that he needed to make to ensure that the project ended up beautiful and well executed, not just the bare minimum that needed to be done.

We removed one of the windows in a bathroom during a recent remodel. We knew of the difficultly in matching brick and mortar and in reviewing the job with Alan, we discussed options of making it look like a deliberate fill-in (similar to old buildings). Since this was on the back of the house we decided on having it installed to look original. Alan did a great job of searching and obtaining bricks that matched our house which was not a very common color. Since this was an outside job we did not have to be there. Coming home I was very pleased with the installation and clean-up. Even though there were bushes that would have hidden finished off mortar hitting the ground, there was none. After allowing several weeks for the mortar to dry and lighten up, it did not match or come close enough to the original mortar. I talked to Alan and sent pictures (since I'm about an hour away) and he agreed it was not a good match and would grind out and replace it. One very important reason besides all of the good reviews of AW Masonry we went with Alan was he stressed how important it was for us to be satisfied with the final work. He was a man of his word with no hesitation came out reworked the mortar and the final result was exactly what I wanted. It is very difficult to repair or add on to existing brick and have it blend in so we were hopeful for a close match. However, he and his crew knocked it out of the park with the rework to the point if you didn't know where the window had been you would have an extremely difficult time finding it. Couldn't ask for more!!!

Alan was great to work with! I had been worried that the cracks in the house were a sign of problems in the foundation and would require very expensive repairs. Alan inspected the house carefully and explained that this type of cracking did not signify a problem with the foundation. He took the time to answer all my questions. He followed up promptly. The price seemed fair and the quality of his work was excellent. He matched the mortar so carefully that it is difficult to tell where he made the repairs. He also was thorough in identifying and repairing some other minor mortar voids, as I had requested. If I need any masonry work done in the future, I definitely will call AW Masonry again.

Everything went fine. They did the job as we discussed and did a great job..... This was on a 1952 house, so a lot of repair was needed.
Description of Work: Grind out 100% of all joints on flower bed walls on each side of porch. Repair brick work on front stoop that was broken loose. These were removed and re-laid. They came back the next day and washed down using a mild acid. He actually did a little bit more work on my back porch area since he had the extra time. There was no charge for that . His price included all labor and materials.

Alan and his crew did a fantastic job. The retaining wall next to my house was damaged due to a vehicle collision. Alan came out to my house a few days after we initially talked on the phone and gave me a very fair estimate for the repairs I wanted done. We agreed on a start date and Alan and his crew arrived on time as discussed and began the work. His team was able to complete the job in approximately 3 days. Throughout the process, Alan kept me updated in the evenings on progress of the job. What impressed me the most about Alan and his crew was the attention to detail and ability to make the new section of the retaining wall built by his team blend so seamlessly with the undamaged, old area of the wall. The quality of his team's work is outstanding! In addition, while on the job, Alan noticed that some of the mortar joints in the brick staircase leading up to my front door / porch next to the retaining wall needed to be repaired. His team repaired these areas of my staircase at no extra charge. He also had his team do an additional course on the side of my house when he noticed that it was needed at no extra charge (a total of seven courses were completed!). I'd highly recommend A&W Masonry and Restoration and will be using them again in the future for projects I have planned.

This project could not have gone any better. Alan was a little hard to get hold of at first, but I'm glad we were patient, because it was worth it. Alan made a number of design/engineering suggestions that enhanced the project. His crew showed up on schedule, and their attention to detail was remarkable. The project took longer than anticipated---about three weeks start to finish---but mainly because they were so careful and concerned with executing the design perfectly and so willing to troubleshoot issues with tree roots and proper drainage. We could tell that Jerry, Tommy, Robert, and Al, the primary crew members, were engaged in the project and proud of their work. Site cleanup was likewise careful and complete (AW Masonry offered to reseed and spread straw over equipment-crushed areas of lawn, but we were happy to do that ourselves as part of border-and-bed planting and mulching). We started with an ambitious plan and didn't know how closely our naive budget projections would match contractor estimates. Indeed, bids were higher than we expected. But we're glad we decided to go with mortared pavers on a 4" poured concrete base, over a crushed gravel layer, instead of a less expensive sand-set installation. AW Masonry gave us not only greatly improved curb appeal and solid construction but also, in our view, outstanding value. We think the quality of this project is evident to anyone who sees it.
Description of Work: Demolished old cracked or crumbling residential hardscape, including 50' walkway, four brick steps to stoop with wood railings, and concrete front-door stoop. Rebuilt entire front steps and stoop, expanding the width by 5', sourcing brick and mortar that matched brick house facade. Instead of wood railings, excavated and poured concrete footings and built bilevel brick walls on each side of steps and stoop. To one side of steps, poured footings and built brick retaining wall to enclose planting bed where previously had been unconstrained mulched area sloping steeply to lawn. In front of that retaining wall, poured concrete footings and base and built an 8' x 15' brick patio. To the other side of steps, where the old walkway had been, excavated and poured concrete base for a curving 50' brick-paver walkway that widens where it meets the driveway. The pavers in the walkway, patio, and stoop were all laid in a 45-degree herringbone pattern, with a 90-degree brick border.

Alan came out the day he responded to my voice message left the day before. He inspected the job and stated that he would provide an estimate via email within a couple of days, which he did. We discussed matching the mortar which was an issue when I had some other work done by a different contractor 4 years ago. I received the estimate shortly thereafter and felt that it was reasonable for the work that was needed. I called him and set up an appointment. He was unable to keep the appointment through no fault of his own, since it rained heavily on the scheduled date. That day was a Friday. He returned the following Tuesday, completed the repair job in one day and returned 3 days later to do an acid wash of the entire repair area (even cleaning up some preexisting conditions). Should I need masonry work done in the future he will be my "go to" contractor.

I would contract his services in an instant. He worked within our budget parameters and was never pushy. His team was equally professional. Scheduling was tricky, but weather proved the culprit.
Description of Work: -Demolition of old concrete sidewalk and slate patio. -Installation of a new dyed concrete sidewalk and patio, both with curves and bends to blend with landscaping. -Installation of downspout drain under concrete into gravel drain pit. -Demolition and reinstallation of side gate and fence. -Transfer of excavated topsoil from one side of property to other side. Alan and his team worked against weather and scheduling odds to complete a truly beautiful job. Our serpentine sidewalk blends in perfectly with the property and plans we envisioned. Our back patio carries those curves and is huge!! The work quality is top notch. He was flexible as our needs changed, and communicated thoroughly any changes he required along the way. Though outside of his typical work, he redid our side gate from the ground up, piece by piece, better than most fencing guys.

This was a first-rate company. Mr. Williams delivered exactly what he promised. His team arrived early to do the grinding and breakdown of the mortar and later in the afternoon the other team arrived to set the bricks. Both teams cleaned up behind themselves as well as the property. Mr. Williams came out to look at the work himself.
