He is unreliable and is unable to manage cash flow. I had to terminate him after he exhausted the $10,000 initial payment, completing only some site prep and partial footer completion (mis-estimated the amount of concrete, resulting in an uneven (4" low) corner on the structure's poured foundation). He apparently relies on people who owe him money or favors to get the job done. One worker - Jimmy - was skilled and reliable when he showed up, but apparently he didn't get paid regularly so he didn't show up regularly. Smith called one day asking me to charge $600 worth of cinder block to my credit card saying he had a guy 'ready to go that day and would be getting a big check on Monday,' and that was it for me. He was intending to correct the defective poured footer with block and mortar and didn't even have enough of the initial payment (that should have resulted in a compete slab) to buy $600 worth of blocks. Unbelievable. By my estimate he completed less than 50% of the work and "spent" 100% of the initial payment. He was five months behind schedule, even when taking into account allowances for weather. Nice enough guy but clueless when it comes to business and customer service. Icing on the cake was when I noticed that a 30' extension ladder he had borrowed from me had gone missing. Said he realized the mistake and would return it. Never saw that $350 ladder again. I guess I'm to blame for some of this. I should have seen his money problems sooner and realized that managing a project more complex than a shrub planting would swamp him. Steve, if you ever read this, I want my money and ladder back. If it weren't for my wonderful, forgiving wife, I would have sued you in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Smith and his crew were to pull permits, prep the site, pour a foundation and use a Class A builder to complete the work on a simple garage project. He was selected for this job because he had done some handyman stuff around the house which turned out to be OK quality at an extremely good price. I liked his choice of subs, his "warranty" and his price proposal. This wasn't about building a spaceship so I went ahead and contracted the work to him. The basic job for Metro was to remove four trees, dig footers, pour a slab and let his subs do the rest. The deal was $10,000 for work up to a completed slab, then progress payments thereafter.

Not a good one to date. Although they (Smith and his 2 stone workers>> (those 2 were 2 good pro's by the way, did some fine hard work) started the job and appeared to be completing a nice project of building the steps. They did not complete the job as Mr. Smith said he would nor did he offer any explanation/phone call follow-up feedback to explain, or return any of my wife's phone calls. A written contract was done indicating they would complete the job for $1500.00 which is an excellent price for this job. All we want to do is finish it and a good recommendation on other contractors who can finish the job at a low remaining/reasonable price soonest is all we want. Please call my wife, Lynn at cell # (703) 587-7510, or at home (703) 339-4718 to get her first hand insight on what she saw in this experience. We want to get it finished so we can do some nice follow-on enhancements in the backyard patio area.
Description of Work: This company was advertised to do not only lawn and yard work but stone/paver work. We asked the company rep/owner/proprietor to give us an estimate on the cost to lay in stone steps (mini-creta ) stones from the back door down to existing patio, take out old temp wooden steps in place since we bought house in June 2000, lay in a dry gravel base /sand /dirt foundation, tamp it and lay stones in about 4 steps leading up to bottom of door. They did the above (over 10 day period) but did not finish the job. They cut the stones nicely with a paver saw and actually built the steps up as you see in a any stone catalogue, but stopped short of cementing the stones and supporting interconnecting rails, and laying a nice paver porch foundation at top of steps. The 2 workers did quality work but they took their orders from the owner/proprietor of this one person company to go to another site to work a project and never returned. All calls to (Steve Smith)of Metro, remain unanswered to date.
