Two years ago when I purchased my house the lawn was filled with weeds, the grass was sparse, and there were patches of almost barren soil. American Dream Landscaping transformed the front yard into one of lush grass in just a year. My mistake was not having the area on one side of the house included in their treatment; it continues to be the sad "before" image of weeds and intermittent grass. This year's first spring weed control application on the front yard was, unfortunately, washed away by rain that started just a few hours after the treatment. Because of that I asked for the second treatment to be moved up on the schedule, but instead, the Deeds reapplied the first treatment for free -- an astonishing act of generosity. Without hesitation I recommend American Dream Landscaping. My front lawn is a wonderful testament to their expertise.

We signed on with this company in good faith and the experience was a most unfortunate one. Last spring, the seemingly strait forward task was weed control. The machine employed leaked excessive amounts of chemical weed killer which resulted in dead, scarring grass patches throughout the entire property which lasted through the season on into the fall. Since accidents will happen, we decided to give American Dream Landscaping the benefit of the doubt (even though we never received any credit/discount for the lawn damage incurred in the spring and simply paid the bill). This fall we were then treated with granular fertilizer, soil conditioner, aeration and seeding. We have cobblestone bordering areas around the property and spent some considerable time explaining to their workers that heavy machines could not be used to drive over the cobbles and bricks since stonework would be displaced and damage occur. We requested hand push rollers be used instead and they listened and appeared to agree with our home owner's request. In spite of clearly asking that the hand push fertilizers and aerators be used as an alternative (which they had with them on the truck as well), the heavy machines were used to drive over the stones displacing and creating repair issues for us. When we reached out to the owner the following morning and asked questions as to what had been done and precisely what his workers had reported to him, he became defensive, silent and then hung up on the customer. The repair headache occurring on our property was entirely avoidable. Sadly, the discourtesy and unprofessional behavior on the part of the owner of American Dream Landscaping was a real disappointment to us. Politeness, professional treatment and a will to accountability would seem a baseline expectation for the customer when dealing with any responsible business. Our experience with American Dream Landscaping was a costly nightmare...

Response from American Dream Landscaping LLC
To start, we would like to thank you, the potential customer, for taking the time to research our company for your lawn care needs. As you may see, we are new to Angie's List, although, we have been in business for ourselves since 2011. We pride ourselves on our service and this shows in our 92%+ retention rate year-over-year. Please understand that there are two sides to every story as I respond to this homeowner's review. Please forgive me in advance for the lengthiness of my response and "airing dirty laundry". Mr. and Mrs. [Member Name Removed] were actually referred to us by a very prominent nursery and landscape company in our area. A company that hires us for the lawn treatment services of their own customer's estates. I met with Mr. [Member Name Removed] in the Spring of 2018, presented services and pricing and we agreed on a lawn care program for the year. The almost 1/2 acre was full of many different weeds and there was evidence of previous crabgrass issues. The first time we treated the lawn we did use a ride-on spreader sprayer in order to spray for weeds and spread granular fertilizer at the same time. We did go over the cobblestone driveway border and no issues occurred. Shortly after the first treatment complete dead areas did show up in the lawn. Dead clover, dead chickweed, dead henbit, dead bittercress - dead weeds throughout the lawn. I met with Mrs. [Member Name Removed] and she showed me the areas that were dead and I attempted to explain that the areas of dead "grass" were areas that were choked with weeds and, as explained to Mr. [Member Name Removed] in our original meeting, some areas are all weeds. We will kill the weeds, promote the existing grass and reseed in the Fall. Mrs. [Member Name Removed] was not satisfied with my explanation so I bit the bullet and did offer to refund the price of the application which she declined. Mrs. [Member Name Removed] asked then that we never use the ride-on equipment to treat the lawn again and to not use weed control because they wanted the lawn to be more "natural". She did not want more weed control and did not want us to use the ride-on because "It simply seems too large of a machine to put onto our yard". There was no mention of the cobblestone border and no changing her mind on this so we agreed and for the rest of the entire year, we did not apply weed control again. When Fall came and it was time to aerate and seed, we brought out the walk behind aerator. We started to aerate the lawn but the red clay was so compacted that we were only pulling 1/2"-1" cores. My employees called me to tell me that they were not pulling good cores and asked what they should do. "We're not pulling good cores and the special instructions say no ride-on equipment on property - what do you want us to do?". I told them to go ahead and use the ride-on aerators because they are hydraulic and they could turn up the pressure to get the 3" cores needed to do a proper aeration. My employees then explained to me that the ride-on aerators would have trouble clearing the cobblestones because of the lower clearance. I then instructed them to use the 2"x4" boards on the truck to help clear the cobblestones and complete the job since the driveway was too tight to drop the trailer gate over the cobblestones. When the aeration was complete and my employees went to load the aerators, they did catch the top of one (1) cobblestone so that it was leaning back about 45 degrees. They stood the cobblestone back upright, pushed the soil back around it, tamped it back tight and smoothed the pea gravel out. As my employees were applying the seed Mrs. [Member Name Removed] called me to pay for her services via credit card and asked that nothing else be done for the season. She told me that the lawn "Looked horrible like a circus went through it". I explained that the lawn will seem a little torn up, due to the large amount of soil cores pulled, because we went over it twice with the larger aerators because it needed extra aeration and extra seed because the grass was so thin. (Some customers can be quite surprised by the lawn being "torn up" from an intense aeration job.) I then explained to her that I was in the field and do not take down people's CC information in the field. I then asked that she call the office to submit payment. She never called the office. The next morning Mr. [Member Name Removed] called me, sternly stated his name and asked me "What did your employees tell you?" A little taken a back I asked in regards to what. He again asked me, "what did your employees tell you?" I explained to Mr. [Member Name Removed] that my employees and I discussed that evening what happened on the lawn; the lawn was heavily aerated and seeded and they bent back the one cobblestone and then fixed it. Mr. [Member Name Removed] then asked, "What else did they tell you?" At that point my reply was straight forward, "Mr. [Member Name Removed], what is the issue here?" His response was, " I'll ask the questions, YOU will answer them!" I was surprised that he actually yelled at me so I was quiet for a moment then asked him, "What exactly is the issue here?" He then yelled at me again, "I will ask the questions and YOU WILL answer them! Are you going to answer my question?!" At that point I answered "No." and hung up on him. I did not yell, I was not rude. I gave him his answer. I was not going to be yelled at any more. We cancelled their account and were not going to contact them again. About 5 days later we received a check for the full amount owed with only a copy of the invoice that we left the day service was provided. There were no additional comments from them. As we started gearing up for the new season, we checked our Angie's List account and saw this review. We are not a perfect company. Yet, we are people who enjoy the work that we do and we enjoy helping homeowners and companies have a greener, weed-free, healthier lawn. We are people who diligently train our employees and have confidence in the quality lawn services that we provide. We are a small local company and we bend over backwards for our customers. Do we have room to improve? Definitely. We attempted to do the very best work we could do for the Paynters. Unfortunately, this is how things ended up with this customer and we did not see eye to eye. We hate to lose any customer, especially over being dissatisfied, but at the end of the day, we are reasonable people and do not treat customers disrespectfully and would hope for the same in return.

Description of Work: Leaf vacuuming service at the curb. | |American Dream delivered as promised and provided service to several neighbors. My only concern was the price, which seemed high for this type of service, although I received a quote from another company that was $50 more.

that The lawn never looked better. The only thing is the grubs. Granted, they said we should treat for them but we thought it was to expensive and we were going to do it ourselves. We never did and have grub damage but they came out and seeded and did extra seeding in the bare spots but did not charge us extra. He said if we stay as a customer and spread the word that would be enough. A little expensive but well worth the money!
