+ 0 moreI used them to do some repairs prior to a sale of a home. It was stipulated that a licensed contractor was to be used. I had received several quotes and decided on Mr. Handyman. I was in transit so I had to have someone else do it. They sent out two workers instead of just one. I flew in on the day that they were doing the work. I met the two workers. One of them was a real handyman and the other one was a trainee. I waited until they finished on Tuesday to bring up the matter with the owner. He said that he would only charge me 30% of the cost for the second man (the trainee). The secondary worker did not do any work. I requested that I not be charged for the trainee, because the trainee did not do anything. They did not agree. It basically took them 16 hours for what should have been done in a day. If you use theis company, make sure that you are there too make sure that they are working efficiently. Also, don't pay for a trainee.
Description of Work: There was a list of seven items that needed to be addressed by a pre-home sale inspection.

+ 1 moreI first contacted Yogi who carefully explained how they work - 2 hour min. for $230 with additional hours billed at $90/per hour (in quarterly increments). He also suggested that I have a new faucet purchased ahead of time since it was about 20 years old and would likely need to be replaced, plus he said that they usually suggest replacing the valves and supply hose at the same time since they were of the same age, but the handyman would let me know which parts to purchase once he arrived. Mike was my handyman and although there was only so much that could be done with the sliding glass door since there are no parts for it, he removed it, thoroughly cleaned and lubricated the tracks and made adjustments to the mechanism and got it functioning as well as could be. Next he took care of the leaking faucet (per Yogi's suggestion had purchased a replacement ahead of time) and Mike gave me the exact information I needed for the replacement hose and valves - which were definitely needing replacement. I really appreciated how competent and efficient Mike was at these projects and that he was especially mindful of the fact that we are paying him by the hour so takes great care to work as quickly as possible. Would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Just used Mr. Handyman for the first time today to do a couple of jobs at my rental property - fix a sticky sliding glass door and replace a leaking faucet.

+ 0 moreThey did a really good job with the installation. I do a lot of this type of work so I was keeping my eye on it, and I could see that they were careful even though it was fairly difficult. It was a lot more expensive than I was hoping for. They quoted me about four hours of work but it ended up taking eight. I am very satisfied with the quality of their work.

+ 0 moreThey were very upfront. The guy that came out never identified the source of the water leak, but he worked very hard trying to help me out. He gave me his personal contact information and asked me to call him if I ever found the leak. They seemed a little bit pricey to me. They were very responsive. I would use them again in the future if need be.

+ 0 moreI called on Saturday, 8/20, to schedule service as soon as possible. Yogi called me on Sunday and made the arrangements for Monday. I asked them to mount two valance and assemble two large pieces of furniture from Crate and Barrel. I was given an arrival time between 11 and 3. The dispatcher called at 10:45am to let me know Daryl was on his way and would be there in 45 minutes. I met him, explained what needed to be done and he got right to work. He was very good with my dogs which made it s good experience for all. Valance were up in less than an hour, furniture assembly of one piece took a little over an hour. The second piece of furniture he did not assemble as a part was cracked and I will have it assembled once C&B sends the replacement. I would definitely call them for future work.
Description of Work: Mount two window valances and assemble two large pieces of furniture from Crate and Barrel.

+ -1 morePerson arrived timely, but that was the last good thing that happened. When I called to schedule the appointment they told me I had to schedule the service for a weekday becuase what I was aking to have done could be done in 2 hours. INot sure who that person was becuase it took over 4 hours and the job was not complete. The faucet and light fixture was installed (but doesn't work and he could not figure out why with a couple more hours). The fan needed extra work to find a stud to hang it from, but it was hung crooked and I ahve to sand and paint surface since he took so long. The plaster he used was cleaned up by me and was all over everything. He used a drop cloth to come into my house, but not one to cover the area he was working around??? He was constantly being called on his phone for other jobs (he kept telling me. He acted like he was doing me a favor being there.) Kept telling me it was not HIS day and nothing was going right. Just didn't find that professional or comforting. Have submitted comments to the company, but have never heard back. I will look elsewhere for other services I need.
Description of Work: Had to have a ceiling fan installed, another light fixture a kitchen faucet and 2 outside faucet connections.

+ 0 moreAs above, the whole house fan was not installed; it was simply removed from the box and left on the floor. The attic fan was installed under the guise that it did not need electricity. Electricity is the only thing that makes it work--solar power is iffy in the daytime, and non existent at dusk or in the morning. When I called, I didn't even ask for the attic fan--I was told it worked on solar, it was recommended by brand, and that it did not need electricity. Mr. Handyman apparently does not realize that solar power must have a power storage component to work when the sun is not shining. Mr. Handyman did not realize that the whole house fan is used at night to bring in the cool air; he thought it was used while the attic fan was on. Mr. Handyman did not answer my calls about the half installed attic fan, charged me $411 for two men that did a job that should only take 90 minutes at top--inserted fan into roof. Period. Electric power was not connected. I got no response from Mr. Handyman from my two phone calls asking for an adjustment to the money paid, so I was forced to cancel my check. Then he wrote an email over 3 wks later demanding full payment. In my history with Angies's List in Indiana and in Virginia, I have never had to report such a negative experience.
Description of Work: Asked for Whole House Fan installation, coupled with check on ridge vent for 220 sq. in. of passive ventilation in attic as required. Also, at the recommendation of Mr. Handyman, added installation of attic fan. Was told by Yogi Batra on the phone that the attic fan he recommended only needed solar power; he also said it would meet the ventilation requirement of whole house fan. (It would not fall under the Tamarack requirements). Was told it would take two men about 2 hours to complete the whole house install and about 2 hours to install attic fan. The two men were unable to install whole house fan. Mr. Handyman did not realize the whole house fan needed to be hard wired and did not send certified electrician. The Tamarack Whole House Fan was left spread on the floor and not installed. The men assured me that the ridge vent was open. That meant that the 20 ft of double sided ridge vent was more than adequate to meet Whole House Fan requirements when I found someone qualified to install the fan which was my original request. The recommended solar fan was installed, but without the electric hookup. Was told didn't need the electric hookup. Solar fan did not work when workers left due to moving clouds. The solar fan did not store solar power under hazy, cloudy, or dusky conditions. Within 36 hours realized the solar was only good for a few good hours of sunlight--not enough time or power to reduce the temperature in the attic. Attic was over 120* at sundown. I had an electrician hook up the electric wiring, since it worked on a hybred model. Attic was cooled significantly the same day. Fan has remote control and I can see it runs on electricity in all weather and after dark, reducing the attic temp to 80* by evening. Clearly Mr. Handyman took on two jobs that they were not qualified for. One was not even attempted (whole house fan) and the other, the so called solar attic fan, only worked in sunny weather and required the electrical hookup supplied with the fan. So the "installed" attic fan was left not working due to clouds, and I had to run out to the work truck to tell the men it was not working. They told me I had to read the directions for the remote control--that was not their job. Clearly they were in a hurry to drive away. I have since had an experienced electrician install the whole house fan and wire it, and he wired the attic fan as well. He did it alone, he took less than 4 hours, and both work perfectly. I have had both types of fans in two previous houses, and know what to expect when they work, and know what to expect when they are installed. Mr Handyman did not install one fan, and incompletely installed the attic fan, rendering it useless. Therefore, I don't consider services "performed".

+ -1 moreSometimes you don't know what you want done, you just know there's a problem. It takes a seasoned professional to work with homeowners in these cases. I hope all my experiences with Mr. Fix-It Handyman would be this good, but I'm asking for Don next time!
Description of Work: I purchased an Amgie's List Big Deal a few months ago for 6 hrs. of handyman services. I called Diego to set up an appointment ,who took my number. Luke just happened to be following up on the Big Deal customers and called me from the office and we scheduled the first available day. I emailed Luke a detailed list of tasks. He provided a reminder call a few days in advance, which was great. Don showed up early on the day of the appointment. He walked through the list with me and got to work installing a medicine cabinets and light fixtures in two bathrooms, a ceiling fan and hall light fixtures. With an older home, there are bound to be unexpected challenges which require on-the-spot adjustments. So it was with the cabinet installation. Don inserted wood supports in the existing recessed wall space from the old cabinet to hang the new ones. He also installed a ceiling fan light mounting fixture in place of the ceiling light fixture. Most valuable, Don and I discussed the ceiling fan opening in the hallway where I wanted to replace the screen cover. He showed me how that is created a hot spot with hot air coming in from the attic. He went up into the attic to check out the situation, found another attic fan at the roof, which would be more appropriate to use, but it was really old and the engine was dead. So he recommended we seal off the opening in a temporary fashion to kill the hot spot in the summer but that we can open and use it in the fall and spring, to pull cool air from outside into the house. It was a simple solution that is making a big difference already.

+ -1 moreFernando and Chris arrived on time, and they were both professionals and knew what they were doing. The installed the screen pretty good and in sturdy fashion. NOTE/WARNING: When the office provided me with the hourly rate for the job they never explained to me or made it clear that I have to double or triple the hourly rate if they send 2 or more people, etc. I discovered the rate issue after 2 of them showed up and found out the the hourly rate will be based on two man hours (double). I called the office and told them they need to make this clearer in the future and that I wasn't aware of this. So, they did give me a price break which was still little bit higher than regular one man hourly rate. That's pretty much the only comment I have. They need to explain that if two or more people are needed for the job, then the rate will be different. I hope they start disclosing this more CLEARLY from now on. Otherwise, the overall work was fine.
Description of Work: The company came to install a screen on the kitchen's outside vent to prevent birds from going in.

+ -1 moreOur experience started out very well. There was initially some confusion about pricing, but in the end they were true to what they'd quoted us. The technician they sent, Scott, was very punctual and polite and well versed in all the work I needed. After the first two days, though, there were some scheduling issues. They told me Scott was sick and another technician would come out. The second half of the work was completed by another technician, Will. He was fine but because he wasn't there initially, I did have to explain the work again and he had to spend time figuring out what Scott had done and where to pick it up. After I expressed concern about this, they did adjust the price slightly. Overall it was fine, and I would probably use them again; I just didn't like that my first technician disappeared in the middle of our work.

The price was reasonable for all the work that he did. He was pretty much on time, actually a few minutes early. I have recommended them to my parents.

+ 1 moreHelping Hands arrived at my house the first day on time. We went over the work that needed doing and at first we thought both Bay Windows could be done in one day. But as the day progressed, it became apparent that the first one had more extensive rot and needed the whole day to complete (my patchwork spackling and over paint had masked the extent of the real damage which only became apparent after demo started). He finished the first Window by the end of the day and had it ready for primer coat and we had to schedule a follow-up day to complete the job, but, due to weather, we had to re-schedule the completion again and in the end hold off for almost two weeks to align our schedules and complete the job. On both occasions he arrived at my house when he said he would, went over with me the work to be done, discussed material selections, his recommendations, approach, and total cost. He came in on target with all of them and also did a good job cleaning up the work area when the day was done. His price was very reasonable and I am very happy with the results. I will be hiring Helping Hands for more jobs on my house.

+ 0 moreOverall, it went well, the handyman that came out to repair the wall was very nice and did a very good job. I could have gotten a much better price on the roof since the guy that did the roof charged me 330$ to put on 15 shingles (not including the cost of the shingles). By comparison, for 100$ more I could have gotten 100 sq feet of shingles repaired and installed and they would have also provided the shingles. They gave me a quote on getting the bathroom tiles repaired since they are falling off the wall exposing big holes in the shower, but I have decided to just get the bathroom renovated. ****UPDATE**** Yogi and the company reimbursed me for an hour of labor on the roofing. The price is much more reasonable now.
Description of Work: They repaired a hole in the wall, gave me an estimate on bathroom tile repair and replaced shingles on the roof.
