Fabulous results! I am so pleased with it all! George and his crew were very professional, on time, cleaned up well at the end of the day, and worked very very hard. They were as unobtrusive as possible since I was working at home during the week and very polite. They paid attention to detail on everything! I highly recommend them, and will use them again.

The owner is George Hughes. They were extremely thorough and polite. They stopped at every juncture where a decision had to be made and checked with me to see how I would feel about it. They gave me advice that was appropriate and helpful to help me make a decision. They gave me lots of options. The workers were prompt and came when they were supposed to come. They were very respectful and considerate. They covered everything. I can't underline considerate enough. We had a bunch of kids in and out of the house at the time and they had to deal with a lot of complications. They were just great about it. As I said, they cleared everything in advance with me. They completed on time and they were really, really good. They gave us a really thorough estimate for doing other rooms and we elected to do two right now. There were lots of options, such as if we wanted to change the color, it was one price. We will definitely have them back and they were really good. We didn't have other people give us estimates because we were so impressed with their thoroughness.
Description of Work: We used Hughes Painting to repaint two bedrooms.

George Hughes authorized his crew to start additional repair work that was not included in the original written estimate without contacting me first. When he called to tell me it had been started Mr. Hughes was not in any way prepared to discuss the additional cost involved and gave me an estimate of 50% more for repairs. No other contact was made by him to discuss the additional cost further. When I recieved the final bill the repairs were approximately 88% higher than the original repair cost. After a discussion we settled on a final price. Overall, the house looks great. My recommendation is that any potential customer should request that they be informed about any work that will add cost to the job prior to the work being started.
Description of Work: Provided window sill, siding repair & replacement work on the house and detached shed, painted the house and the shed. Stained the front steps and deck.

Response from HUGHES PAINTING LLC
I admit that I did not communicate with the home owner in a timely fashion, particularly relating to cost increases. The client had recently bought the home and the original inspector missed quite a few areas of wood rot and I missed areas as well. The only way it is possible to discover all of the wood rot on a home is during the preparation phase when you are poking and prodding at every piece of wood. It is my recollection that I was able to review some of the additional work with the home owner that was discovered shortly after we arrived on the first day and the client was available at that time. It was my understanding at this point we had authorization to proceed with further repairs as discovered and I updated the client regularly as to the additional repairs. I am not entirely sure the client has the same recollection of events on this particular part of the communication process. This was approximately 3.5 months ago and I can’t completely attest to every detail in conversations. I did, unfortunately, fail to give updated cost estimates in the time frame that was expected and I did give an off-the-cuff guesstimate of 50% for a carpentry cost increase, which turned out to be too low due to the amount of rotten boards that we eventually found. The client did not want to pay the difference in the amount of this guesstimate and the actual figure, and I agreed that it was fair in light of under-estimation of the problem and not communicating sooner on cost. On all jobs now and in the future, we will review and agree with the client on a level of additional repair cost that can be completed as discovered during the job. This includes issues not discovered at the initial inspection, and would involve the client in discussion of necessary cost increase(s) that they would be comfortable with up front. It is more cost effective to repair areas as they are discovered than to constantly stop the process. These areas have to be repaired before painting and in spite of my best efforts, many areas will not be discovered until the painting process has begun. I will also make every effort to get cost adjustments to the client faster so that we do not have these discussions at the time of billing. It has always been my policy that every piece of wood that we know will need to be repaired at the time of the initial estimate is itemized before starting the job, and that we give with the final bill an itemized list of every piece of wood replaced that is not on the initial estimate. We also do not charge carpentry by the hour but by the board so there is a cost comparison between the work initially estimated and the work discovered. Personally, I know how difficult it is when you receive a bill higher than expected and I will make every effort to avoid this type of miscommunication in the future.

The job took 21/2 days. Exactly the time he said it would take. Each day the painters cleaned up after they were done. He had a foreman, who actually supervised the work. When the work was completed, I was totally satisfied.
Description of Work: Painted my living room, kitchen, and den. Mr. Hughes came in and went through each room inspecting the walls and woodwork, and explained exactly what the work will require. He let me know up front the pros and cons of what the job would entail. Out of the other two estimates I received, he was the priciest but the most detailed when it came to explaining the job.

Our recently-purchased home in Chester is a lovely design with strong, clean lines. The entire interior, however, was a disturbing shade of "powder room peach." The powder room, on the other hand, looked like it had been fingerpainted in several shades of green. George met with us to survey the job, I provided him with the paint color I wanted and he had a quote to us the next day - along with some excellent guidance as to finishes. We scheduled the work to begin on Jan 4 2010. Happily enough, George and his painters were able to start it on 12/31/09. Flawless. Absolutely flawless! We even invited our realtor over to see the transformation. We're incredibly pleased with the results and have already recommended Hughes Painting to many of our friends who will also be moving to that area as a result of BRAC.
Description of Work: Prepped and painted interior of a 2600 sf house to include hallways, loft, 3 of the 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a powder room, sitting room, formal dining room and the living room with its 18' ceiling!

Mr. Hughes showed up on time (!), did a very thorough job during the estimate, and provided a detailed quote that clearly detailed what was to be done. The price was several hundred dollars higher than the lowest quote I received, but he inspired the most confidence that the job would be done well so I went with his quote. This was a small job for him, so it took a bit of time to fit me in, but Mr. Hughes started work well within the window of time that he had promised. The job took several part-days, having to work around uncooperative weather. He took his time with each window, definitely did not cut corners, and was extremely professional throughout. The end result looks fantastic; I'll definitely have him back to paint/caulk the rest of the windows at some point in the future (need to save up!). Would definitely recommend; you will pay a bit more, but if my experience is any indication, you are not gambling with quality or reliability.
Description of Work: Replaced 4 rotted sill nosings, some brick molding and small section of soffit with PVC material. Also painted and re-caulked all the window frames that were worked on.

Mr Hughes surveyed the job and promptly provided an estimate. He and his crew appeared as agreed and set to work. His foreman was in touch with us whenever additional needs were detected, and the crew proceeded efficiently, quietly and with good nature. At the end of each day all debris and apparatus was collected and disposed of or neatly stored. We were grateful for their diagnosis and correction of a water flow problem that caused much of the porch decay. The crew comprised craftsmen of the first quality. We chose Hughes Painting due to consistently high ratings appearing on Angie's List, and the company's performance exceeded our expectations.
Description of Work: Pressure washed house surface, removed and replaced 25 siding boards, repaired and resurfaced (Bondo) wooden porch columns, replaced porch railing pickets, painted exterior surface. Duration about 4 days.

Hughes is very punctual and responsive and accurate in his estimates. Hughes also has a great sense of color. I was trying to figure out what color to paint the porch roof and was really clueless. He gave me a great suggestion that we chose. All the workmen behaved very professionally at all times. The entire experience went well and quickly. We are all very satisfied. His company is definitely worth what they charge. You hear so many stories of house painting going awry, but I never worried for even a second.
Description of Work: Hughes painted all the wood trim, the doors, the porches, the windows, the original shutters (from the 1930s) and the moldings on our two story house with attic and basement. The company repaired the wood where necessary, and did a lot of scrapping. Before the painting and prep work started, he had the house power washed.

First-class operation. The crew of five finished the job in 2.5 days and they were absolutely fantastic. They arrived on time, worked hard and put everything away each evening. There was no trash or cigarette butts to pick up afterward. The crew was professional, polite, and friendly. The crew did an excellent job on the prep, caulking, painting, and finishing of the house. Both during the job and after the work was completed, George Hughes came by and personally inspected the crew's work. He even returned a few days after the job was complete to put an extra coat of paint on the sill of a palladium window- without being asked. He said that he just wanted to make sure the result would last a long time. The team did a superb job and I would not hesitate to use them again for exterior or interior work. The overall price was very reasonable considering the quality result.

George came very highly recommended by friends who had used his services in the past. His estimate was on the high side of other quotes we received, but we were extremely confident that he would do first rate work and deliver what he promised with no surprises. His crew was professional and efficient and I will use him again the next time I need my home painted.

Very professional presentation during estimate phase. Was able to answer all my questions. Once the job was started, they worked very hard to make sure we were happy with everything, even when there was a miscommunication on my part. I felt that that the crew was very hard working and professional. They went above and beyond. He also followed up within a few days of completion to make sure we were happy with the work. The crews showed up on time every day. At the end of the day ladders were all put in a designated area and paint supplies were put back into the trailor. Trash was cleaned up and in the interior the work area was vacuumed. When something unexpected was discovered, the crew chief always came to me with the question and discussed with Mr. Hughes. The quality of the work was exceptional and attention was paid to detail all the way through the project. It was a perfectly professional experience. The crew was pleasant and respectful at all times. I would highly recommend Hughes Painting to anyone. The cost is for the exterior and interior painting, and the addtional cost to do work which should have been done by another contractor. I consider the cost to be reasonable and fair.
Description of Work: The house was power washed several days before the painting began. There was a lot of caulking and board replacement to be done because the contractor hired to do this did a poor job. The home was brush painted in two colors, the shutters another color.

They come on time every day and ready to work. They work throughout the day and communicate if they have a question. They clean up including vacuuming before they leave. They never leave before 4:00 each day. Mr. Hughes is very honest and professional and a dream to work with. He is a very very good contractor in a sea of bad contractors. His prices are fair. I am recommending him to others.

I think the project went well. Every evening it was as if the crews had not been there that day. They cleaned up so beautifully. All of the guys got along with each other, They worked very diligently through the day. They did very little to disturb me, as I was around the house.
Description of Work: The whole outside of our house needed to be painted. There was some minor repair work on lower boards and trim. The men were very concientious as the whole project went on. The biggest problem we had was figuring out how to manage the dog within the disrupted house flow. (She got out a couple of times)

George Hughes arrived as scheduled to see the house and give an estimate. He discussed with us exactly what his work would entail and then completed a thorough examination of the house to determine areas needing repair. His estimate arrived by e-mail that same evening. When the crew arrived to begin prepping and painting, George introduced us to all members of his crew. Their work was extremely neat. Before leaving each evening, all materials were cleaned up and ladders stacked neatly. We had a issue with the color matching of the paint from a very old can of paint, but George took care of the problem quickly and brought back several samples for us to check before proceeding. The house look wonderful!
Description of Work: Pressure washed house. Removed and reinstalled window screens and down spouts Major scraping and sanding of deteriorated paint. Replaced drip caps and brick molding. Repaired soft areas of siding with Bondo. Caulked all cracks. Primed and painted all trim. Painted all siding, railings, downspouts. Primed and painted all doors (color change).

Mr. Hughes and I spoke on the phone. I was looking to recieve an estimate for the re-painting of the exterior of my personal home. I told Mr. Hughes that I work for a large coatings (paint) manufacture and I wanted to use one of my own products on my home. I was a little dissapointed by his refusal to use a product he was unfamiliar with. He appearantly will only use 1 of 2 or possibly 3 products and is unwilling to try another. I offered him many "outs" with his concearns of workability, quality, and overall difference between what he normally uses and that of his normal product selection. He still did not want to take a look at it. I do respect him for sticking to what he has had success with, but was a little dismayed at his refusal to take a look at a new product. I offered a sample of wet material for him to try but he did not seem interested. I leave this experience never knowing if Hughes painting is as good as his Angies customer list says, and Hughes painting will never know if they missed out on an opportunity to try a new product that could have solved a problem for a future customer.

I can’t back a product I know nothing about. It's my reputation and exteriors are all about the weather. I am not willing to gamble in spite of the fact that the client insists that I do. I have never heard of his product that apparently is primarily used in commercial industrial applications. It may be as good as he claims but I do not know that and two years from now, will the product hold or fail? If the product fails, who is going to get that call?

Mr. Hughes and his crew were very professional throughout the entire process. They were punctual, polite and service oriented at all times. George Hughes, the company owner, was extremely responsive and available from the first meeting to provide the estimate and each day during the course of the job. He would arrive first thing every morning in order to do a progress review with me (the homeowner) before I left for work. As well, Mr. Hughes stayed in touch with me as needed during the day while I was at work with any questions that arose. I felt very comfortable leaving my house each day to go to work while the crew did their job. Mr. Hughes and his crew definitely went the extra mile on anything that I asked and the results were fantastic. He really took ownership of the quality of the work.

I contacted three companies for bids, got 2 quotes, and Hughes Painting was definitely the most cost effective. George Hughes answered my many questions about the project very thoroughly. He also provided an extensive reference list. I contacted 3 names from this list. All 3 were very helpful in talking to me about their experiences working with Hughes Painting. All gave thorough descriptions of what had been done and were very pleased with the work. Therefore, I decided to move forward with Hughes Painting. Hughes Painting showed up right on schedule on the appointed day and time. George Hughes introduced me to his crew and then they went about their work. Mr. Hughes did point out to me right at the beginning that a couple of deck post caps were very loose. I appreciated this information. They spent the morning power washing. They tied back a couple of bushes near the deck to protect them and make sure the power washing was done thoroughly. The deck looked very clean when they were done. The deck staining happened the next day, I believe. Again, Hughes Painting showed up as scheduled. George Hughes introduced me to his crew, and they went about their work. They used some sort of equipment to apply the stain and worked diligently to do this. We were then asked not to walk on the deck for 24 hours(or until the next morning?)so that the stain could dry thoroughly. The next day, my husband and I examined the quality of the work. It was very good and thorough. The deck looks very nice now, very smooth and well-maintained. The only possible improvement would have been to apply stain in a few very narrow, difficult to reach places where boards joined together at odd angles. You have to look quite hard to see these places. Also, that would have required applying the stain by hand with a small brush. We were very pleased with the job done by Hughes Painting and would not hesitate to call them again. Everything was done when it was promised, George Hughes is an excellent communicator, and the price was as expected.
Description of Work: In mid-September, Hughes Painting power washed our back deck and applied one coat of solid deck stain. They matched the color currently on our deck by using some leftover stain from deck staining done by the previous owner of our house. Stain used was Sherwin Williams Deckscapes. We also got a quote from Hughes Painting to trim our bushes around the deck so that deck staining would go smoothly. However, my husband and I decided to trim the bushes ourselves.

George Hughes and his crew were great to work with. From the time I met George, when he came to our home to scope out the work needed, I felt comfortable talking with him. As we went along, I found that both he and his on-site associate Eric were VERY easy to talk with and I felt comfortable asking any questions. I was not sure about my colors, so George recommended an interior designer that could help me with that, if needed. As it turned out, I did my make my own decisions. Words are not sufficient to describe how happy I am with Hughes Painting.
Description of Work: These guys removed 70 s and 80 s era wallpaper from four rooms, including a large kitchen, dining room, office/exercise room, and utility room, as well as from hallways up and downstairs and stairwell connecting them. There was some damage under some of that paper, especially in the utility room. The prep work repaired and covered that damage. The crew was prompt, focused, and friendly. After the paint was on, it all looked just great! George also arranged for my exterior to be power washed. Afterwards, the crew installed new shutters and even put a new coat of paint on the wrought iron railing on my front steps.
