My wife and I were on a very tight timetable to get repairs done to our home, which was under contract to be sold, due to difficulties with some previous contractors. With only 10 days left, I called David and he was able to get an estimate done by the end of the next day. We agreed upon a price and he got the work completed in the following few days. David was communicative and professional throughout the entire process. The work was done beautifully and we're confident the new owners will enjoy the results for years to come. He really came through for us when we were in a bind and we sincerely thank him and his team for their quick response and excellent craftsmanship.

We decided to wait on the repair. We allocated budget in a different direction but he was competative with his pricing. He submitted a very professional work agreement through email with a very specific work breakdown so we could see where the money would go and allow us to pick and choose from the list. When we do go ahead with this home repair, we would most likely go with him.
Description of Work: Provider came by to give an estimate on some various home repair issues involving drywall, mudding, door replacement, and some possible framing due to potential termite damage. Provider demonstrated extensive knowledge, was very personable, and was very patient with questions.

The work done exceeded my expectations. I do not really know if it was more expensive than other contractor/handiman companies as I accepted Raven's offer without other estimates. I feel I got my money's worth. Would hire Raven again for any future repair needs. I was actually out of town for 3 of the 4 days Raven worked on the house. I felt I could trust him to do the work and that trust was more than confirmed on my return.

We purchased and are renovating a bank-owned home in the Ocean View area of Norfolk. The house is 100 years old and the floors on the second story were a roller-coaster nightmare. On first contact, David walked through the house and clearly understood the challenges of a 100 year-old structure. He described several similar jobs he'd completed in the past, and had several ideas for our problem. He took a few notes and later that night we received a very reasonable bid that included the floor leveling and demo work. He also gave firm dates for starting and completing the work, and followed the schedule to the minute. The final result was outstanding, and I highly recommend David and the Raven team for any work upon which they bid.

The experience went extremely well. We have not been living in the house the past 10, and we did not have a clear idea of exactly what needed to be done. David and his two workers, Kevin and Thomas, were very patient and courteous while we assessed any new problems that needed fixing. It was particularly reassuring, that David would address problems as they arose, and we didn't feel the need to be watching over them. They were very cooperative as we made specific requests concerning the work. Also, David provided us with a useful notebook that contains all the work done and the warranty information to the new fixtures. I would highly recommend Raven Contractors and plan to use them on future home improvements.
Description of Work: Raven Contractors did a complete remodel of our bathroom in a small rental home. This included removing the tub, sink, toilet, tile, floor, lights, and walls. A new sink, vanity, toilet and cast iron tub were installed . The tub is surrounded by new tile which extends past the toilet and behind the sink. New tile was installed on the floor and along the base of the walls. Two new light fixtures were installed, one with ventilation and a new medicine cabinet. New walls were installed and painted. Other work done inside the house included painting 2 bedrooms, the hallway, living room and kitchen. They replaced the kitchen exhaust fan, repaired a leak in the kitchen sink drain pipe, repaired the sink cabinet base, and fixed a leaking garbage disposal. On the house exterior, they replaced the siding with new vinyl siding, framed the windows to facilitate wrapping the siding, replaced new light fixtures at the front and side doors, installed seamless gutters, and replaced the front door with a new fiberglass door and frame. They also replaced the front and back hose bib and installed an interior shut off valve to the back hose bib. Of the $16,800 total, approximately $8200 was for the interior work and $8600 was for the exterior.

Overall the projects has gone smoothly and I am very happy with the work. I got written estimates for both parts of the project and signed a formal contract for the work to be performed. There was a allotment for the bath fixtures and tile in the contract but I ended up paying for all the fixtures and tile since I choose to spend more money for better quality. Before I hired David I had interviewed a number of contractors who basically couldn't tell me how they planned to fix the problem of the sagging joists or they only offered solutions that was a inadequate and never addressed the main problem. I had two structural engineers look at the structural problem one said everything was fine and the other suggested sistering joists. David was the first contractor that agreed with the structural engineer on sister joists and even offered a better solution to support the ends of the beam so the joists underneath would not start to bend again (he put in piers). When I returned from work each day the drop cloths were picked up in the areas that I would use. He was neat in keeping his tools in the garage and not laying about in the project area. I had a difficult time finding a vanity and he suggested Dave's Cabinets which made a wood vanity for about same price as store bought one (particle board) but with better quality. He offered suggestions to improve the look of the tile in the shower and he was open to minor adjustments (of course I paid for the adjustments but the bathroom looks better). One of the things I liked was the invoices I received which stated what was done since along the way there were additional items that needed to be addressed and were first approved by me to do and they clearly stated in the invoice. It was a pleasure to have him do the work and I am happy to have at last found a contractor in Virginia Beach that I feel will do a good job, offer suggestions about improving the the look of a project, and is a true professional.
Description of Work: I had two problems the first was that when I bought the 1950's house the dining room was opened up with a beam that spanned from the kitchen wall to the bathroom wall (20 foot opening). Over time the weight of the beam at the ends where it intersected the bearing wall was forcing the joists to bend down since the support wall for the overlapping floor joists was in the center of the hall way and not directly underneath the bearing wall. The second problem was a leak under the master bathroom toilet that rotted away the subfloor in the bathroom. You might ask did I have a home inspector before I bought the house 3 years ago and yes I did and no I will never use him again. David sistered joists to the existing joists in the crawl space that spanned from the center support wall to the perimeter foundation. A total of twelve joists that spanned from the master bedroom to the garage wall under the bathrooms, dining room, and kitchen. I had him do the extra joists under the kitchen since there was a noticeable difference in the floor from the side with the additional support to the side without additional support. He placed piers under the corners of the wall at the ends of the beam in the dining room for more support. Next he moved to the master bathroom where he gutted the bathroom. He pulled up the damaged subfloor and sistered joists to some of the existing floor joists before putting down a new plywood subfloor. Durarock was put on the walls & floor and he put in the shower floor using a membrane. New plumbing for the shower and a new spot for the toilet. David had to repair the floor under the wall to the bedroom due to water damage. He tiled the shower and the floor in an offset pattern. Put in a light over the shower painted the walls put in the vanity, toilet, and towel bars. Since he gutted the bathroom at the start he put in the new wood trim. The final touches were done and now I have a new bathroom.

It was a bad experience.
Description of Work: We had an estimate done to have a boat dock and covered boat lift built. 3 weeks later and 2 phone calls, no estimate. I called a third time and supposedly spoke to the owner of the company and he said he never heard of me. There is only one Raven Contractor in this area so I totally feel like I got the blow off. The spent probably 45 minutes in doing the estimate, complete with taking pictures of the area, so I'm not sure why we never got an honest answer or why we didn't get the estimate but I was completely not impressed with anything about these folks.

Having no idea who to contact to have the job done, I went to Angie's List. I sent David Niles an email asking if the work I was requesting was within his scope of expertise. He contacted me the follwoing day and set up an appointment for him to come inspect the area in question. He did exactly what I expected, That evening I had an estimate emailed to me. What was unexpected was the pictures he included and a very detailed estimate as to what he would be doing. He explained everything very thouroughly as to what was involved with the repair. After agreeing to have him complete the work, he showed up on the day to do the repair on time. He completed the job sooner than he initially stated. Again he provided pictures of the work he performed. After completing the repairs, he cleaned up and put everything back the way he found it. If you're looking for someone that takes pride in his work and demands nothing less than high quality workmanship, this is the guy you need to call.
Description of Work: I was selling my house and I needed one more repair ro be completed prior to going to settlement. I needed a joist in the crawl space removed and replaced due to moisture and mold setting in on a board.

The job went really well. They had to take measurements on all the windows which is difficult in an old home since there is settling. David was able to manufacture the frames on all the windows, some of which were small and others enormous (like 66" x 108"). The windows are great and, since this is an Angie's List report, at one point David even walked my dog one day during the job (just like the Angie's List TV ad).
Description of Work: I wanted 33 interior storm windows installed in my 102 year-old house in Norfolk. I knew that I wanted to use acrylic and magnetic frames (from Climateseal.com) to go in the window sills. I picked Raven Contractors because they had renovated all the porches at my home a few years ago and because they have great skill and obsessive attention to detail. David Niles is a perfectionist and a very good person.
