I called to get a quote on getting an Oak tree cut down in our front yard. I was quoted by the owner $3000 to cut down, with an additional $850 for haul away. This was on March 11. My husband is our only source of income and we had to wait til he got paid again so we could afford it. I called on April 9 mid-day and had to leave a message. I received a call back today at 4, saying that the quoted price is no longer valid because the quote was "Winter Pricing." He said it's "Spring pricing now." I told him that the quote was less than 30 days ago (Wal-mart even gives you 30 days). MARCH 11!!! That is not winter. He then berated me by saying if you rented a hotel in VB in January, it'll be like $100. If you rent it in April it'll be like $200. What.....does he want to DOUBLE the price now that it's "spring." DO NOT TAKE YOUR BUSINESS HERE. Or at least not during a pandemic when people are out of work and tree companies know that they can charge you more because the government will be giving you money.

Response from RELIABLE TREE SERVICE
We are very troubled and disturbed by this review, there are several inaccuracies in it and we will be reporting it to Angie's List administration. First of all our company policy is that estimates are only guaranteed for 10 days, this person called almost a month later to have the work done when pricing had changed because when the estimate was originally given there weren't any leaves on the tree, now the tree has leaves which results in an increased work load, there is more brush chipping which means the job will take longer, this would result in a slight increase in price. When the customer did not seem to understand this we tried to provide an analogy to illustrate seasonal pricing, like hotels. At no time did anyone say the price would be double, that is factually inaccurate. What we find most disturbing about this post is the fallacious and derogatory comment that our company is charging more for tree work during a pandemic because we think the government is giving money to people. This statement is completely untrue and defamatory. Our company is a family owned business that has many hardworking individuals that regularly work in dangerous conditions, around power lines, in dead trees, after hurricanes, and always usually 30 feet or more in the air. We provide exceptional work for a fair price. This review is retributive and dangerous. This reviewer posted the same review, word for word, on our Facebook page and clearly has an ax to grind and statements like the one above have the potential to do long lasting damage to not only our company, but our employees' livelihood and we take great exception to them.

I was shocked and delighted when they got the job done less than 72 hours later AND before we were due to have some dangerous and potentially damaging thunderstorms. This is the second job Reliable Tree Service has done for us and we couldn’t be happier with their service. Highly recommend these folks.
Description of Work: We had 8 photinia trees on the side of our house that were dead or dying. Rob came out on Tuesday and gave me a quote to remove and haul away the trees and debris. I agreed to the price which was incredibly fair for the size and number of trees and he said they would get to it within ten days.

My family has used this company for well over twenty years on multiple occasions. The most recent occasion was this past fall when Hurricane Matthew was threatening our area. I have a huge tree in my backyard and I was worried that a part of my tree was dying therefore compromising the integrity of the tree. I made one phone call and Rob was at my house within a couple of hours to look at my tree and re-assured me that everything was fine with the tree and the surrounding structures. This isn’t the first time I have used this company in an emergency situation. In the Nor’easter we had in November 2009, a huge tree limb snapped off one of my trees and landed on my house. Once again, I made the phone call and he was out there in a storm tarping the roof of my house and securing the limb so no further damage would incur. I have used Reliable Tree Service in many capacities; they have removed trees, pruned them and are always my first phone call in an emergency situation. Their customer service is first class, not to mention the knowledge Rob and his staff brings to the job. I would without a doubt recommend them to anyone

From the beginning they were very quick to respond to my emails for scheduling. They came out to do the quote on a holiday which was actually great for us since we didn't have to miss work and we could both be here. It took us a while to get back to them but that was our fault because we had to schedule with the neighbors. I was finally able to give them the go ahead on a Sunday and by that evening they responded that someone would be out the next evening (again working around my work schedule) to sign the quote. They started the work the following day. Very quick turn around, very courteous, quick response and we are very pleased with their work. At the end of the day everything was cleaned up and the tree trunks were stacked nicely in the street. Would definitely use their service again.

As business owners ourselves (General Repairs LLC) we've heard multiple stories from our customers of contractors that don't call back, do poor work or disappear on them. We couldn't fully appreciate the reality of their experiences and the frustrations associated with it until recently when we had to find someone to remove a tree from our property. We hired Reliable Tree based on a recommendation from a longstanding customer. He is very particular about the work done on his home and we felt that Reliable could be trusted as he was pleased with the quality of their work and their prices were comparable to the other estimates he had gotten. Our customer explained that recently the two owners parted ways but their companies still did jobs together. A pleasant woman answered my call and we were scheduled for an estimate the next day. That afternoon, Rob called to say the job was running long and asked if we could move the appointment to the following day, Friday the 27th. No problem. Friday afternoon, the man who called to say he was on the way was Jim and when he arrived, I was impressed with his demeanor and professionalism. His prices were fair; not the lowest but better than 80% of the other estimates we had received. The tree to be removed is very large and in the middle of two detached garages on the property line so we knew it wasn't an easy job. Jim wrote the prices on the back of his business card and that's when I realized he was the former partner doing the estimate for Rob. While going over the work to be done, I was particularly happy that Jim didn't require our neighbor's fence or vehicles to be removed as he said the crane would be able to lift over everything. This was a relief because our neighbor's truck is inoperable and to move it would have been an imposition to him. Jim said the oak and two other pines would be climbed and the pruned limbs lowered to the ground and hauled out so there was no issue with our work trailers being on the other side of the house. I called him within the hour after our appointment and asked to be put on the schedule. He said he needed to speak with someone about the availability of the crane and would call next week. No one ever called us back and we were beginning to think we needed to find another contractor when Rob called Saturday afternoon February 4th to say they would be there Monday morning. My husband called Rob on Sunday to say we were going to pass on having two of the pines pruned. We wanted just the oak pruned and the large pine removed. He also stated he would be there to meet with Rob Monday morning to insure we were all on the same page about the work to be done as we had not yet received a formal contract. Jim's prices were written on the back of his business card and included the trees but not the verbal price of an additional $200 to grind the stump. Because we wanted the stump ground, our price should have totaled $2350. When Rob arrived today, he proceeded to write the contract but the price for the two trees was $250 more than our quote. When we produced the card with the prices on it, Rob said he would honor it but clearly he wasn't happy. He stated that the tree was larger than Jim described and therefore he brought the smaller crane. In addition, he insisted that the neighbor's vehicles, our trailers and a small ornamental tree be removed. While this supposed miscommunication between the two owners placed us in an awkward and uncomfortable situation, we immediately set to work waking our night shift neighbor to move vehicles and preparing to move trailers to accommodate the equipment. Rob clearly did not like the prices Jim had quoted us and was on the phone discussing this as we finalized with our neighbor that we would jack up the back end of his truck and help push it out of the way, promising to move it back for him when the tree was finished. Suddenly Rob approached us and said he couldn't afford to wait around for everything to be moved and he was going to pass on the job. In complete dismay we told him we could have everything done in 20 minutes and were ready to get the job done today. Mistakenly thinking this was his fault, our neighbor offered to have the truck pushed into his back yard if that would speed things up for us. Despite bending over backwards to accommodate him, Rob still didn't feel it was worthwhile and we parted ways. I cannot understand the purpose of an estimate appointment, in particular with someone who apparently never intended to do the work himself, when Rob planned to write his own prices the day the work was set to start. James was delayed getting to our job on time and further delayed our customer getting to her job as she continued to wait for him. We're embarrassed to have woken and inconvenienced our neighbor unnecessarily. Perhaps Rob made money elsewhere today and it was easy to walk away but it's most unprofessional to disrupt the lives of multiple innocent parties on very short notice because you weren't interested in the job anymore. I cannot overstate how displeased I am with this company ironically named "Reliable" Tree Service
Description of Work: One large pine removed and an oak pruned. Originally was a pine removal and two pines and one oak to be pruned. To have the stump ground was an additional $200 which was verbally stated and not written on the price list at the time of the estimate.

We are sorry for your inconvenience, but Jim is not a partner with this company nor was he ever, the referral sent from your friend was a job that Jim at Poquoson Tree Service did for them that he happened to subcontract to Reliable Tree Service, when you called our office for an estimate we did not realize this at the time, once we realized that you had mistakenly thought that we had done the job for your neighbor we referred it to Jim so as to not steal any customers from him, this is why he came out to give the estimate instead of one of our estimators, we feel terrible that he did not communicate that it was Poquoson Tree Service giving you the estimate. We are sorry for the unfortunate circumstances for your job but we were there as subcontractors and the information we were given to do the job was incorrect. There was not anyway we could safely work our cranes over the vehicles under the trees. We appreciate that you tried to move them but we were under the understanding that it would have taken at least an hour to move the inoperable vehicles and this was after we had a crew on the clock for over an hour to get over there. We are sorry for the misunderstanding, we hope to make sure that any company we work for in the future has a better idea of what our crane requirements are before we come out to do a job site to work for them.

Made an appointment with the office. No one showed up for the appointment and never called to say they couldn't make it. They never contacted me to reschedule. That's the best way to send a prospective customer to another company. Since they were so highly rated, I thought I wouldn't have this problem. No sure whether to trust ratings now.

Respectfully, we think you have the wrong company, we do not have a Mike that works here nor does our office have any record for an appointment for an estimate at your address. We are one of the few tree companies on the peninsula with a crane and we are frequently hired by other tree companies as subcontractors on jobs that require large equipment, our last job on Lynnhaven in Hampton was for Legends Tree Service, perhaps one of the employees from this company was the person you spoke with about an estimate,

Rob's team was very professional. They finished cutting down the two trees and grinding the stump within 3.5 hours. They took the trees down well without damaging my deck, the fence line, or anything on my neighbor's side of the fence. They also had a lot of different times available when I first called, although they did have to reschedule once from my preferred time. The best part was the cost. They were by far the cheapest quotation that I got for these trees and I checked with several area tree services. I was worried that the quality was going to be lower due to the cheap price, but that was not at all true. The team they sent was professional, did their jobs on time, and did things really well. I would use Reliable Tree Service again if needed and would recommend them to anyone who needs tree services done.

A team came to cut the tree/gind the stump which they did. The problem I had was the aftermath. The tree was taken down at my 98 yr. old mothers house and I did not see anything until the next day. There was trash in the front and back yard I had to clean up (water bottles, fast food lunch bags, bags of snacks etc.) Then I saw the 3 foot by 10 foot mound of dirt left behind with 2 big holes left in the ground after the stump was ground down. I called Rob, and he came over to pick up the final check and see what I was talking about. He said that's the way it should look after a tree stump is ground out. I said it was unacceptable, that it was a huge mess that I personally (65 yr. old female) and my mother could not move. He said he would have to hire one of his workers to come out and fix it, but I would have to pay an additional $300 on top of the $1,900 I had paid. We decided the dirt could go in the far back yard that is just leaf litter. Also the post hole for the clothes line was buried in the dirt so it couldn't go back up. I came back the next day, and I saw a smoothed out large mound of sawdust which is the normal appearance it should have had, but the post hole is still buried underneath all the sawdust. So I still can't put up the clothes line. The dirt must have been either moved elsewhere or packed down because it was not in the back of the yard as discussed. That was no biggie, but from what I understand after a stump is ground up it should look like a pile of sawdust, not a potential mud mound 3x10 feet. So I am a dissatisfied customer from this point of view.

We are troubled and confused that you feel dissatisfied about your job. We always explain upon the initial estimate that stump debris removal is not included in the contract unless it is specifically marked because there is an additional fee. We do this because most of our customers, because of the savings involved, would prefer to move the mulch themselves. While we understand that once you saw the amount of debris left behind from such a large tree that you did not feel that you would be able to move the mulch, this was the choice that was made at the initial signing of the contract. After you saw the amount of mulch present at the completion of the job, you did state that you would like it to be removed and we explained that our price would be higher but one of our employees could do it for you on his own time at a cheaper price in the effort to save you some of the cost. This is the situation that occurred in this instance. Our company prides itself on professional work, we have a long reputation in this community of doing quality work at reasonable prices with customer service as our goal. We feel that we were upfront in our pricing and tried to come to a solution that would be beneficial to you, we are very sorry that you do not feel the same.

I called Reliable Tree Service on either 3 or 4 September and Rob came out that evening to give me a free estimate. Rob provided me with two estimates; one that included removing the tree limbs and the other estimate was for just cutting the limbs down and leaving them on the property. As money is tight, I opted for just cutting the tree limbs down and leaving them there. Rob was also willing to negotiate his estimate and we agreed on a lower price. Rob was also willing to do the job on Saturday, 6 September. The only snafu occurred when they were delayed on an earlier job and had to come over a bit later than originally expected. The good thing was Rob called to let me know they would be delayed then called again when he knew when they would be over. When the crew arrived they began working right away. They got the job done quickly and safely. The crew was professional, polite, and hard working. They even cut the larger limbs into more manageable sizes for me after they were on the ground. I greatly appreciated that. I will definitely consider Reliable Tree Service for future jobs.

The whole thing was a bit frustrating, but it was mostly due to the daily rain we were getting. The job kept being postponed because of the rain. Then it was postponded another day becasue the lift operator was sick. Although not proactive on keeping us updated, the owner was always very responsive when we called him to get updates. They did a good job despite all the delays and came back to regrind the stump when it was discovered that it had not been ground down enough. I would recommend and use this company again, but I would be sure to give myself plenty of time to get the job done, since work like this is so weather dependant.

They were close and convenient because the owner lives just one street away from us. They gave me a good price for the service. They worked hard and they got all the work done in one day. They were fast. They did a good job and they did exactly what our original agreement was. Our original agreement estimate was $2000.00 even but then I asked for additional work and that's where the extra $300.00 came from. That was a fair price for what they were doing but I had to kind of ask them a couple of times to do the work the way that I wanted. I just felt that I had to explain it more than necessary to get the desired result. I did not pay them to remove the wood they chopped down so I have a lot of wood in my yard that I'm chopping up into firewood. I had left for work before they were completely done and left my property then the neighbors tell me that someone came by and loaded some of the wood into someone's truck. Maybe they thought that it was okay because I've got all these extra wood and I don't need this much but they didn't ask my permission. If they asked me, I would have been fine with it but it didn't seem right since they didn't ask. They surprised me. When we had originally got the estimate, they said that the job would be the following week after the estimate was written but they just showed up one morning and said, "We're here to do all the work." We weren't prepared.

We made arrangements to see Rob on Sunday after agreeing to having three large oak trees on the side of our house removed. When he arrived we asked about five large trees in the backyard. The price he gave us for the total project seemed very fair so we agreed to have all eight removed. Rob and his team showed up Monday morning and spent the day removing the large oaks between two houses plus topping one tree in the backyard. The team was very professional in carrying out these tasks. Tuesday it rained all day, but Wednesday the team was back and proceeded to finished the job within a few hours. They were very adept in using a large crane to remove the large tree pieces over the top of our house. Rob got a tree stump grinder into our backyard without removing our fence and his team made quick work of the stumps. They proceeded to haul away all the large tree trunks after chipping the smaller pieces. The crew cleaned up the driveway and street of any debris from the trees. Now our backyard will have more sunlight and we look forward to growing some better grass along with less raking of leaves. Absolutely recommend Rob Hendron and the Reliable Tree Service team.
Description of Work: Eight large trees were cut down and hauled away. All stumps were ground down.

On Tuesday Rob came out and gave me a quote to remove a very large tree (80-100ft), haul away the debris and grind down the stump. Also we agreed that if he removed the side yard fence I would be responsible for putting it back up which I thought was a good deal. The price he gave me seemed fair so I scheduled him to come out on Monday morning. When Rob and his team arrived they removed my side yard fence so they could get their equipment in the back yard and they got to work. His guys picked up the brush left over from the tree removal and they even shoveled up the dog poop in the yard. They hauled away all the limbs and trunk pieces and ground down the stump (which was massive). They left me a nice size pile of mulch from the stump that I plan to use on my flower beds. They were professional and safe. Rob and his team did great work. I would recommend their service to anyone.

I called a couple tree services recommended by by neighbors and went on Angie's List and called the top three services that basically had perfect records and asked all of them for estimates. When I called Rob, the owner of Reliable Tree Service, last week and asked for an estimate. He came out that afternoon gave me an estimate and after getting the other bids, I called Rob scheduled the work to be done today at 1:00 PM. The team had an earlier job that took a little longer than expected (after all, they were working in less than perfect weather). Before the appointment time, the office called and let me know they would be 15-20 minutes and asked if that was ok. They showed as the office manager told me and went to work. They were extremely courteous, highly professional and very safety conscious (important to me, I'm a retired Air Force officer that spent some time as both a ground and flying safety officer). The work was perfect and, if there ere any questions, they stopped and asked me which way we wanted something to be done. I could not be more pleased with their work and my dealings with absolutely everyone I worked with from the owner on down. I will be using them again for some more, more complex work later this year and will recommend then to everyone that needs tree work done. Not only was their price lower than the others, Reliable Tree Service was lower than the others even when I included teh stump grinding on the larger tree and compared that to the others not including the stump grinding.
Description of Work: They took down one pretty large large gum tree (~50') and cut down and trimmed out to the trunk a medium holly (~25') tree to about height of about 4'.
