Kenny and crew were prompt and courteous. He gave good advice. I trusted what he said. His bid was very competitive (lower overhead I assume), and he didn't nickel and dime for minor changes or additions. I thought what he asked for in additional work was fair. Kenny and his crew (and his subcontractors) did good work. He will be the first guy that I will call for any additional work.

I initially called Kenny on 7/29/14 and requested his assistance with some DIY projects I was working on (replacing pergo floors, water damage, termite damage, moist/moldy drywall, cracked concrete slab, etc). I told Kenny that I just wanted him to come and and give me some advice regarding the repairs and told him I would pay him for his time. Kenny came to my condo on 7/30/14 and provided the advice I was looking for. He refused to take payment for coming out and even gave me a new tube of caulking to help with one of the repairs. Great guy!

Kenny showed up at the appointed time, viewed my areas of concern, then went under the house into a very low crawl space and checked everything, including plumbing for possible sources of moisture. When he came out, he told me that the space was clean, dry, and well maintained for a house built in 1964. Actually better than many newer homes he had inspected. He determined that a small amount of dampness was evident in one front corner, but appeared to be dry at the moment. We walked the exterior of the home, and he discovered that the drain serving the ground gutter at that point was clogged with mulch from the foundation plantings, and cleared it. Apparently the large amount of rain we had received in the past month caused an overflow and a small amount of rainwater had overflowed through a foundation vent due to the gutter backing up. Kenny gave me a clean bill of health on the crawlspace, offered to clean out the drain at no charge, but I thanked him, not willing to take advantage of his generosity, and offered to pay him for the visit and inspection. Surprisingly, he refused any payment, merely asking me to call him if I ever need him again. I gladly agreed. He was great!
Description of Work: Kenny responded to my request to check crawl space for moisture

I called Kenny and he was at my house within a half hour! He looked at my issue and discussed options. He gave me an estimate and caulked an area that may have been a source for a leak. After it dries, I will call and have the wall repaired. He is very professional.
I called Kenny because of all the positive reviews on Angie's list. He came out, gave an estimate and out of everyone, he had the best plan of action for our investment property. I felt confident in just "handing him the key." Him and his employee had the job completed in under a week, and worked very independently. I have since hired him to do other jobs at our other rental properties. He is honest, does not short-change you, and will tell you, exactly what you need to know.
Description of Work: Replaced three roof collars, repaired three toilets, repaired the siding of the house, repaired front porch and wrapped cornice with PVC coil on entire house, removed and installed side entry door, installed ice maker line. Basically, KA Contracting got our rental home repairs ready for move-in.
We got three bids, and his bid was the lowest - the price was good overall. Most of the work (vinyl flooring, fence repair, bannister repair) is absolutely fine. I'd give the paint a "B" - we had to do touch-up in a few places, but certainly not bad! And he left behind the "leftover" paint for touch-ups, which was helpful. The porch really looked good when he was done with it. HOWEVER, there was one significant problem. He had installed (actually had a subcontractor install) ceiling lights in upstairs bedrooms. This was a vacant house we are fixing up to sell, and nobody was in those rooms for a week or two. Next time I was in there, I noticed there wasn't power to the rooms - saw the breaker was thrown, but it wouldn't reset and when we tried to force it the entire house dimmed out and the breaker box buzzed. I didn't know what the problem was and did not immediately think of the new lights (I had also been replacing sockets in the house) so I called an electrician. The electrician came out and checked the entire circuit. He said the problem was caused by the wiring of the new ceiling lights - there was a neutral wire improperly connected back into a hot wire, and the neutral was now carrying power back to the breaker box (I think). It took him some time to work out exactly what/where the problem was, and then to fix it - he was out for 3 hours, and his bill came to almost $650. He found part of the problem physically in the wires behind one of the replaced sockets (the socket that used to be controlled by the switch that now controls the new ceiling lights), but explained to me in person and on the invoice that the problem was caused by how the new ceiling lights were wired (i.e. not the socket itself). I forwarded the invoice to Kenny and explained the problem. He called, but made it clear that he did not want to reimburse us for the cost of the electrician. He insisted that we should have called him rather than calling an electrician (I called an electrician because I didn't know what the problem was - I did not know it was his lights that caused it until the electrician diagnosed the problem). Then he suggested that the socket changes I made caused the problem, since part of the problem was in the receptacle box (even though the electrician had been very clear that the socket wiring was not the problem). Finally he said the bill was ridiculous and the electrician was taking advantage of us, and he would not reimburse us for that large of a bill, even if it was to fix a problem his subcontractor caused. He wanted to put me in touch with his subcontractor so his subcontractor could "explain to me" that the other electrician was taking advantage. I do not think that's appropriate; Kenny is the contractor we hired, and if there is a problem with work his subcontractors did I expect to be able to resolve it with him, rather than having to talk directly to the subcontractor. Ultimately we're pretty frustrated - $643 is a small amount compared to $5000 (our total bill), but it's disappointing to see a contractor not take responsibility when their work was flawed. And badly-wired electrical fixtures aren't just a cosmetic problem; this could have been dangerous if we hadn't realized something was wrong.
Description of Work: Kenny did a bunch of things - interior painting (plus painting a porch), repairing a bannister, installing new vinyl flooring, installing new ceiling lights, fixing a section of fencing, fixing a leak, etc.

Response from K A Contracting
We installed 3 lights in the upstairs bedrooms. We checked everything and everything worked fine. After reading the complaint it is obvious to any electrician that if there was a power a neutral wire it would be that we call (A Deadshort) which means the breaker would trip making it impossible for the lights to have ever worked. On the complaint it says that the Homeowner changed sockets after all the work had been done. Since everything was working after all the work was done. I would assume it was due to replacing all of the sockets.

Description of Work: Excellent experience with this company. Needed three things done--repair siding wind damage/install new outside weatherproff faucet/repair wall and ceiling in closet which was damaged by roof leak
From providing an estimate to doing the work and finishing the job, Kenny was very courteous and professional. He showed up on time to do the estimate, thoroughly inspected areas requiring repair, and explained what needed to be done. He said he would call the next evening, and he did, to say he didn't have all the numbers yet and would call again the next day. This was very considerate; most contractors simply wouldn't call at all till the next day. His estimate compared favorably with others and he was able to do all the repairs I asked for, whereas the others could only do parts of them. He showed up on time with 2 helpers and they got right to work. The biggest job was stretching the carpet in 3 bedrooms and a hallway. It was really out of shape and looked awful. The effort often required 2 people and sometimes 3, but they worked well as a team whenever it was needed. This was a challenging job that took most of the day and required cutting off 2-3 inches of extra carpet in spots. The end result was amazing - the carpet looked almost new again! It wasn't perfect, but the small wrinkles left in 2 or 3 places were minor and hardly noticeable. I was very pleased with this result; it was better than I expected, given the age (11 years) and poor condition of the carpet. In all, everything was completed in a prompt, courteous, friendly manner, they did not make or leave a mess, were careful when moving my furniture around, and did a couple of small extra things they noticed at no additional cost. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the doggie door - it was fixed but didn't look as good as I would have liked. But I decided to live with it because I just wanted it done. Kenny is honest and up-front and I felt I could trust what he told me. Would definitely recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Stretched carpet, which was very wrinkled and bunched up in places Re-grouted tile where needed Installed flashing in vinyl siding above French doors to stop leak in door frame Replaced screens in 2 windows and a full-size sliding screen door Fixed doggie door Removed trim on attic trap door so I could have old water heater removed (it was bigger than the opening) Re-installed trim after water heater was removed

They were really good. They were prompt and showed up when they said they would and they did what they said they?d do. They were very accommodating. The price was right in line for what I would expect it to be. I could have found someone cheaper but they were conscientious and they were good at what they did. I opted to go with them even though they were a little higher because it was quality work and they were very dependable. That?s hard to find in that type of service. Here?s how accommodating he was: we had company coming into town and we stripped the wallpaper ourselves. We had a real mess under the wallpaper so I called the owner back, on a weekend, and explained to him what happened. We thought about putting wainscoting board put up. He was here within the hour, on a weekend, and looked at it and gave us a price and recommendations because we were going to go the absolute wrong way with the material in a bathroom where it?s wet. He could have put the material up without telling us, just to make the money. He took the time to step back and tell us we didn?t want to do that and he gave us the reason. I really appreciated his honesty. I?d rather have the truth than someone just doing what I want when they have the knowledge of the materials. He?s honest, he?s up front and he does a good job. I was just so happy with that.
Description of Work: I used KA Contracting for a little remodel job in a bathroom in November. I’m getting ready to schedule them to build a privacy fence in my back yard.

He came pretty quickly. It was hard to schedule with him for the actual work. The whole estimate process was not a problem; but when I used him for the job, he didn't call. He gave me an estimate and he was supposed to come out the next day. He was nice enough. He called me and he said he was not able to show up today. It is understandable because I run my own business and sometimes you can't foresee your schedule. Then later on, he wanted to come; but he didn't give me a particular date. When I had to really move out, he called me again and he said he was coming over. I said I was moving out today and I would be leaving.

I had estimates from two other companies before accepting the bid from Kenny. Those estimates were both close to $5,000.00. Kenny's bid did not include replacing the drain pipes which are in good working order. Kenny was able to quickly schedule the work and had the job completed within the morning. The old gutters were removed, stacked on the curb and then hauled away. The new gutters are one continuous metal sleeve. They went up quickly and are working properly. I was reminded that I should call him if any problems occured with the gutters. The snow/rain that we have experienced has shown that the gutters are draining properly. I plan to hire Kenny again to install a kitchen counter.

I reviewed roofers from Angie's List and selected K. A. Contracting due to its high ratings and location. Kenny gave me a quote over the phone and said he would stop by in the afternoon to do the work. He came by after lunch, replaced the pipe collars, reglued shingles and cleaned up very quickly. I am satisfied with his knowledge, ability to do the job and professional manner.

Everything went very smoothly. Communication was excellent and Kenny and Brian went about their work very professionally and competently. I would hire them again for other work and heartily recommend them to other customers.
Description of Work: I was very pleased by the work of Kenny and Brian from K & A Contracting. They repaired several defective areas on our roof and it appears that we no longer have any leaks. They cut down tree limbs which were in contact with our house/roof and were potentially threatening. They cleaned our gutters well and also took care of a small plumbing probem in my master bathroom.
The approximate cost does not include the price of carpet and padding. I found water damage in a bedroom closet and KA Contracting was recommended to me by a friend. I am very pleased with Mr. Amburgey's professionalism, knowledge, promptness, dependability and the work performed. The bedroom closet floor and 1/3 of the bedroom floor had to be ripped out from moisture due to a leaking water valve located in the closet. Fortunately only the top layer of the floor needed to be removed. The area was treated for mold even though there was no real mold problem (this was fine by me), then fans were installed to dry the area. All of the debris was removed from my property and everything was cleaned up properly. Mr. Amburgey gave the room a couple of days to dry out, then promptly called me to come back to make the final repairs. He and his assistant made all wood cuts outside, they passed items through the window so they didn't need to track through the house. He explained what he was doing throughout the whole process. He showed me how frayed the subfloor wood edges were before he laid the moisture paper and top boards, explaining how the cuts were made when my house was built. I appreciated this information along with his recommendations about the leaky water valve in the closet. He did not ask for any money until the job was complete. The finished price was true to the estimate. It took us a week or two to decide on carpet and paint the bedroom. I didn't realize how difficult it is to find someone to lay carpet and padding in one room only. The carpet installers I called didn't want a one room job. I called Mr. Anburgey back to ask for installer recommendations. He quickly offered to help and scheduled a time convenient for me. He and his installer arrived promptly, and the job was finished quickly. I was equally pleased with this job as well and again the price was true to his estimate. I will use KA Contracting for many more jobs I have around my house. I’ll be asking for estimates for a new privacy fence, then a new roof in the near future. I highly recommend KA Contracting in Newport News, VA.
