HATCHETT DESIGN REMODEL

A salesperson came to my home to discuss a kitchen refresh - new countertops, sink and backsplash. I have a small galley style kitchen. I could tell she was preparing me for an expensive quote when she repeatedly told me that the job would require an electrician (nope), a plumber (not necessarily), and a construction permit (not necessary). But I was still floored when she said it would cost $35,000!! I realize that they are high-end, but to charge 5 - 7X what the project is worth?!? Unless you enjoy vastly overpaying, find someone else. I’m attaching pictures so you can see how small my kitchen is.

Michael Hatchett was our primary point of contact from the company and could not have been nicer or more thorough in the planning stages and throughout the entire process! Jessica Altman was the designer and her ideas, guidance, and selections were beautiful, tasteful, and timeless! Tommy Hunter was the site manager and was ALWAYS available to us for status updates, questions to be answered, advice given, scheduling of the subs, etc! We were/are so very happy that we chose them for our remodel AND there’s a lifetime warranty on their workmanship! Certainly cannot ask for more than that!

Everything went well with the initial meeting and design portion of the project. However, they didn't check inside the soffit to see if there was anything in it before they designed to have it removed. Turns out all of the bathroom plumbing was in the soffit. Had to pay additional money to have the plumbing redone to fit the design. Additionally, after starting work they discovered the sunroom was on the same circuit as the dining room and the kitchen so I had to pay more money to have the dining room electric redone to meet code. When they worked on the plumbing one of the pipes leaked so they put a bowl under the sink to catch the water and left without telling us or fixing it. It took the painter 3 tries before he painted the kitchen correctly, even though the project manager had asked me how I wanted the room painted and there was an email sent with the exact specifications that I approved. They punched holes in the living room wall during construction and had to patch that. They incorrectly measured where one of the electrical outlets needed to go so they moved it then left the hole in the wall which when questioned about they finally plastered but not neatly. When they installed the cabinets they used screws that were too long and damaged the interior of the cabinets. They had to replace those with new cabinets. They hung three cabinets at the wrong height and had to lower them. They wired the stove hood to the dimmer light switch in the kitchen and had to fix that. They failed to order the countertop when I made the initial payment and I kept getting phone calls and letters from the countertop company asking me why I was paying them. I didn't receive the project plan until 4 weeks after the project started. They promote on their website how terrific their communication is. The only time I heard from anyone during the first 4 weeks of the project was when they wanted money or when I initiated the conversation to ask questions. When I would approved things with the project manager, they wouldn't make it to the site manager or the workers and I received phone calls asking me what I wanted after it was in writing, then it was done incorrectly and had to be redone. I was suppose to be receiving weekly surveys but received my first survey on week 5 or 6 of the project. The owner actually visited my house with the entire team to discuss my issues. Holes in the walls that were not plastered, holes in the plumbing that were left unrepaired, cabinets hanging out over where the walls were, failure to order the countertop, failure to provide a copy of the project plan, etc. The job was eventually finished but I never received the touch up paint for the cabinets that I was promised. It was a very stressful, very frustrating process that I would never repeat.

In order to get an renovation estimate, one had to pay the design fee of $1250; contract limitation is three days of signing design contract to terminate if one chose. The first design team meeting occurred over two weeks later, thus was past the three day limit for contract termination. Once paid, the design team worked to select hardware and materials, then provided proposed images of the renovation. The design team did a great job with providing ideas and products of what the renovation would look like. At some point, the design team was not listening to the customer goals with reducing the renovation cost, and seemed to continue with this perspective. The design team was unable to provide itemized estimate based upon using proprietary software to derive the cost estimate. The design team stated that they were willing to work with the customer with price reductions by buying hardware from other vendors rather than from Hatchett's suppliers. The design team does not like that idea, stating unfounded allegations regarding the products and installation when buying hardware from other vendors. There is no doubt that Hatchett does quality work, but they are for people who have no concept or clue regarding house/home renovations, and willing to overpay for the renovation. Since the cost of the renovation was approximately one third the purchase price of the house in 1997 and approximately 20% of the current value of the home, it was decided that the estimate was just too much for the renovation and the contract was terminated. Since then, have received estimates from other contractors ranging from $12000 to $20000.

Al the contract supervisor was wonderful. He was professional and respectful. Anything I had an issue with He corrected. All workers for Hatchett provide quality work. The tile man Chris listen to what I wanted in the shower area. His work is top quality. If I am lucky enough to be able to remodel the kitchen Hatchett will be hired. The date for completion in the contract was not met. But I am so happy with the results it does not matter.

The service was great, the staff were very good, they left the area clean and they were prompt. They did a good job and I would recommend them.

We stopped by their booth at the VAB home show. The young blonde lady took all our info and we took time to explain what we wanted to do in our home . She said someone would call us the next day to schedule an appointment. We are still waiting.......

Very professional when they came to house to take measurements and give estimate. But price was just a estimate and not a final cost. Price for what we wanted done was way to high.

Although impressive and process driven, this provider is $$$ expensive $$$ and was way over our intended budget. End of the day we used another service and got a great result for 2/3 the cost of what Hatchett offered w/o all the new upgrades we ended up with.

I liked the quality of the service. The crew was very respectful on the property. It took about three months to complete. I didn't like that they didn't assist more in the designing with the customer. Some of the customer choices were not evaluated by Hatchett Design.

The representative was professional however he requested a deposit based on a ballpark estimate (no calculations were completed) before he would start drawing any plans or calculating an estimate. I am a comparison shopper. Without any sort of an estimate on paper detailing what I'm am going to get for my money, I'm not going to give someone a deposit. I realize that drawing up plans and estimating costs takes time. I also realize that the choices of finishes that I want make a huge difference in the final price. But based on my understanding, I wasn't going to get any sort of estimate without paying a percent of the ballpark estimate I was given at the time of the representative's visit to my home. I was invited to go to Hatchette's showroom and meet with the designer to see what was available. I did ask to clarify that my understanding on receiving an estimate was correct. I have trouble spending part of my budget to get an estimate that I may not use.

The quote amount was about $20000. It was kind of pricey for what I wanted. The guy who came was very knowledgeable and very nice. They kept calling me back to get the job with me. I saw some Big Deals that were offering the job for a much lower price.

Arranged for a estimate by Hatchett --- the representative set a date/time and was on time on the day of the appointment. He did a thorough review of the bathroom and sat down with me to discuss an overall estimate based on the remodel (not detail in regards to cost of tiles, etc). The estimate given was the highest by far of all the estimates I obtained. I chose not to go with Hatchett. I have heard from neighbors and friends that they do excellent work but you pay more. If the cost is truly no issue, then I would recommend Hatchett based on my meeting with the rep and recommendations by friends/neighbors. I couldn't afford their cost -- did go with another contractor who I had some problems with --- but eventually got a beautiful bathroom, three painted rooms, and a renovated wash/mud room for 1/2 the cost quoted by Hatchett for the bathroom remodel.

The people at Hatchett were very friendly, helpful and professional. We were very pleased with the way they handled the whole remodel. Tommy the project manager was very involved, explained things and kept us informed the whole way through the remodel. He really made the whole project go very smoothly. They did the demolition the first week. Before they left they cleaned up all the debris and dust. We ran into a few unexpected things, with the wall removal and dining room floor, but they were right there to check what the problems were and to fix them. It made us feel better knowing things were being taken care of and we didn't have to call someone else to come fix things and delay the work. All of the contractors they hired, electricians, plumbers and plasterers were also very professional, they answered any questions we had and completed their part of the job on time. The job was completed ahead of time so we had our new kitchen/dining area done for Thanksgiving. I would recommend Hatchett to anyone looking to have any kind of remodeling done. They have been in business for many years and it shows, they couldn't have been more helpful or professional.

Did a good estimate that put us into sticker shock a bit. About twice what I wanted to spend. Had two more estimates and a little better but those only included very minimal design with the "design" coming as we select fixtures etc as we go. Hatchett would provide more upfront and product selection ahead of time of construction. We may yet go with Hatchett as we feel we might get a more professional job. Still on hold.

We had already gotten 2 other estimates for the re-tiling of our master bath floor and walk-in shower, both of which were reasonable. We called Hatchett because of their reputation. Meghan Hatchett came to the house, took pictures, measurements, and gave us the company pitch. A few days later she called with an estimate of between $10,000 and $12,000, which, according to her, depended on whether or not our shower door had to be replaced. (The shower door is only 4 years old, and was quite costly, and as I explained to Meghan, was not up for discussion.) After much to do with her 1st estimate, she and quot;worked her penciland quot; and got the price down to $8440, depending on tile selection. On the advice of a different contractor, we had visited Brunk Tile and looked at tile, and accent strips, and had gotten a rough estimate of $1700 (retail) + tax and shipping. I passed the information about our tile selection onto Meghan, and suddenly the estimate jumped $3000. When I asked her for an itemized estimate, I was told that their system didn't provide that. With that, we requested our deposit back, and moved on. It seems that they have an awful lot of overhead, and that expense is passed on to their customers.

The room isn't completed yet. They started a week early. It's been raining a lot so there have been several days they couldn't work. As of now they have completed the concrete, put up the three walls, ran the electrical, installed the roof and the door. I am very pleased with the work performed so far. Everyone on their work crews are very professional yet very polite. I'll update this review as work progresses.

Hatchett Design Remodel were very professional, very prompt, the young lady who came and spoke with us was very knowledgeable but their prices just seemed much more than what we wanted to spend on such a small bathroom. If you are within their price range, they do beautiful work, from what I saw, their quality of work was excellent and they do a professional job. Everything just depends on the value of your home and unfortunately we just couldn't afford it although I did tell the young lady by email, that if things changed, we would definitely use them for future projects based on their quality of work. I would tell other people looking into using them that they are professional, courteous, prompt, they say what they are going to do, their product is outstanding and if you can afford it, you will get your bucks value but you do have to the money to invest into their product.

Positive experience overwhelmingly due to the great work of the lead superintendent on the job -- Van Hicks. Van was exceptionally reliable and skillful. One subcontractor for the tiling dragged the job down with substandard work. That was rectified by Hatchett though to our complete satisfaction. Hatchett overall was very responsive to our desires and company supervision took an active role in making sure the projects were completed to our satisfaction. We could not have asked for a better superintendent on the job -- Van was incredible! The projects may have cost a little bit more than we expected, but the quality of the work proved Hatchett the right choice. Recommend Hatchett!

They paid attention to detail. They were punctual and professional.

We started over the phone, then by e-mail, then they came up and gave us a quote about kitchen remodeling. They were on time, they were professional, and I am happy with them. However, we decided to pick the other company which we think is a better one.

We had several bids and their bid was as high as it was because they were providing a lot of glitchy things. It was a nice feature but there was about $5,000 difference with the company we did decide to go with. We liked what they had but the price was high for us. They were highly professional.

I liked them. I liked that they were prompt and he knew what he was doing. He was very personable.
