The two (franchise) owners showed up on time and performed the inspection together. They were both very courteous and talkative. We initially sat down so I could explain what information I was hoping to gain from the inspection, and answer questions about any problems with the house, how much longer I planned to live in it, cost of my utility bills, etc. They then sealed off my front door with plastic and installed a huge fan to "pressurize" the house, for testing. They proceeded from room to room performing various tests where leaks may occur, and taking infrared(?) photos to show any leaks that may not be determined otherwise. The inspectors included me during much of the process, to show me what they had found and telling me how I can fix the problem areas. They were very thorough in their explanations, and sent a report afterwards, summarizing their findings (including some infrared photos). They encouraged me to contact them with any questions, even if well-after the inspection date. Though a little pricey, the inspection did give me peace of mind, validating some areas of concern I had, and invalidating other concerns (they determined I did not need to replace my windows). Most of the "fixes" they recommend, can be performed by someone with fairly basic handyman skills and access to Home Depot for a few insulating supplies. I saw the owners a couple months later at the Richmond Home Show, and they were offering a "show discount" of $100 off their inspection fee. Guess I should have waited. I think if you live in Henrico County, the utility company will reimburse you for another part of the audit fee. I live in Chesterfield, so I couldn't take advantage of that either.
Description of Work: This is a new small Richmond franchise. I read about the company in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and decided to have them inspect my 32 yr old home for air leaks that could be causing higher-than-necessary utility bills. My house isn't that large (3 bdrm, less than 2000 sq ft), so I was a little put off by the $395 fee. But the benefit of using this company for an energy audit is that they are NOT connected to any HVAC company or local handyman company. Therefore their audit is "independent", which appealed to me. I didn't want to be sold products & services.
