Description of Work: "Our home was built in 1961. So, we're certain the roofing (asphalt shingles) has been replaced several times prior to our buying the house in 2008. Following a competitive bidding process, we contracted with Hardesty to replace the roof on our home and our outbuilding tool shed. Their representative arrived on schedule to survey our project. He was very nice, seemingly knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Later, we learned that ,after hearing our story ,we believe he should have asked more questions of us and surveyed inside the house, too, particularly the attic. After all, they replace roofs everyday and we replace a roof every 25+ years or so. Their price was very competitive, albeit not the lowest. Their crew worked hard & long hours and did an excellent job. The crew's foreman was awesome to work with. In fact, it was through his suggestions, we were able to save several hundred dollars. After the job was completed, the crew cleaned up around the outside of both buildings so thoroughly it looked like they never were there ... except for the new shingles, of course. A few days later, I believe it was, we found one lone nail in a flower bed. Great work on their part. Back to the onsite survey. During the onsite walk-around, we asked Hardesty's rep if he'd like to see the inside of our semi-finished attic (it no walls but it has flooring and we use it for storage), with its exposed rafters, sheathing, etc. He said that wasn't necessary. In our ignorance and ultimately to our detriment, we took him at his word. Had he gone to the attic, he would have seen the underside of what the old shingles were nailed to . . . broad boards with gaps and not tight fitting plywood sheathing. He also would have seen that the boards did not fit tightly against each other. Rather, there was about a 1/8"" (more or less in places) space between the boards. Had he visited the attic, he could have told us what kind of debris we could have anticipated to fall through and advise us about covering our stored stuff. But that never happened. A week before the job started, we called Hardesty to reconfirm about covering our stuff in the attic and was told that it wouldn't be necessary unless we had maybe a nice couch, sofa, etc., that we wanted kept perfectly clean. We covered some stuff but mostly in a slap-dash fashion. In reality, we should have encased everything very carefully and thoroughly. It was a god-awful mess up there when the roofing was done. We had to borrow a shop vac and over several days time, carefully vacuum everything we could reach. Did I say it was a mess? Nails, shingle dust, shingle pieces, general debris everywhere. During our inside clean up which started the next day when we could get a shop vac from a neighbor, and the ensuing couple days, we never heard from Hardesty. In fact we called THEM to tell them about the attic mess, only then did they ask how the job went. When told about the attic mess, all they could offer was a weak apology. So, was the roof job awesome, you bet. But the stuff around the edges needs a little bit more customer service ""care & feeding"", general follow-up than what we got. In fact, as I was writing this, I was reminded that after the job was done, we had no contact with Hardesty that we did not initiate. No customer care follow up, nothing! Would I call them again? Good question! Maybe, but only because of what I know now and I would MAKE them come inside to look, too."
