"I had a disappointing experience with this company due to poor communication. I was promised a quote by a specific date and time but never received it. There was no follow-up or update to let me know of any delays, leaving me waiting with no information. If responsiveness and reliability are important to you, I would recommend looking elsewhere.""

I am a General Handyman with more than 40 years experience. I will treat your home better than if it was my own while getting your tasks done safely. I have a tremendous knack of figuring things out, and decades of experience troubleshooting problems. I also know when to say to call in a specific specialist for a job beyond my knowledge or experience. I will also gladly show you what I am doing so perhaps the next time you won't need my help. I enjoy and am experienced in all types of finish and custom carpentry.

"If you're looking for a handyman who is unreliable, delivers subpar work, and evades accountability, Bryan Hacke and Your Handyman Services might be your pick. For everyone else, I’d strongly recommend steering clear. I hired Bryan Hacke, owner of Your Handyman Services and Your Handyman of Northern VA, through Angi.com to add cabinet hardware. Based on this project, Bryan was also hired to install bathroom fans and a kitchen backsplash. While the cabinet hardware and fans were installed satisfactorily, the kitchen backsplash was a disaster. Bryan initially claimed to have extensive experience with backsplash installations and even showed pictures of previous work. However, the quality of his work did not reflect this. Within three weeks of installation, the grout began to crack, develop holes, and show signs of stress around the outlets and between tiles. He also used grout instead of tiles to fill a 1/4-inch gap between the backsplash and cabinets, put grout instead of tile in areas around the outlets, misaligned tiles in three spots, and installed a cracked metal border. When I contacted Bryan in October 2024 to address the grout issue, he said he would research a solution. After two months of repeated follow-ups, he returned in December 2024 to apply more grout over the existing grout— an ineffective and sloppy fix. To make matters worse, the new grout was a darker color. When I questioned him during the repair, he assured me the grout would dry to match the original, but it didn’t. Now, my kitchen walls are left with stressed grout in two shades and visibly misaligned tiles. His final "solution" was to paint the grout, which I declined. I requested a partial refund to account for the poor workmanship and the cost of hiring someone else to fix his mistakes. He initially seemed willing to discuss reimbursement but then stopped responding altogether, effectively ghosting me."

Contractor services FAQs

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

General contractors are the ones that coordinate home construction projects. They are in charge of the day-to-day oversight of the subcontractors to ensure that the project is completed on time and to resolve problems as they arise. General contractors:

  • Complete pre-construction planning, both with the customer and crew

  • Provide realistic cost estimates

  • Develop construction timelines

  • Ensure deadlines are met

  • Acquire permits as needed

  • Purchase supplies and materials

Before hiring a general contractor for your home project, it’s a great idea to write down a list of questions to discuss with each prospect. Some example questions to get you started include:

  • Which types of insurance do you carry?

  • Can you provide a list of references?

  • What is the expected timeline for this project?

  • How will my project be supervised?

  • Will you hire subcontractors for the job?

  • What is the best way to communicate changes?

  • Will you obtain all of the required building permits?

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Yes, most general contractors require a down payment for project completion. A reasonable down payment for a contractor is 10% to 25% of the total project cost, though that will vary based on project size and location. The down payment helps cover the upfront costs of materials and permits and helps ensure payment for the project at hand.
