They did a really great job. The wall is all better after they fixed the earthquake damage. They were on time, very clean, and really did a good job. We felt that the price was a little high considering how long they were actually here. Update 05/07/13: crew showed up without original consultant when owner not present . family member present, but unfamiliar with contracted work to be performed.work was begun in wrong location of cellar which was discovered upon owner returning. work was then performed after owner showed crew what was discussed with initial consultant, work completed and payment made as agreed. i called the company back appx 10 days ago to inform them that same problem had recurred and was told they would arrange to come back and look at it. there has been no call back to arrange same.
Description of Work: They came out and fixed the wall. We had some earthquake damage and The Foundation Expert fixed it. Update 05/07/13: inspect foundation walls to determine cause of repeated cracking on one wall. installation of piers under wall to address problem

Again, a C for price. People expect quality but don't like the price. I'm the only Super Service Award Winner for Foundation Repair in this tri-state area because we do it correctly - it costs for quality. They obviously knew this and picked us to do the work - they got other estimates - if it was too high priced, they should have gone with less quality around their foundation, which is NOT what you want when dealing with foundations. Go with The Expert - will you pay more? Not really - with me at least you get what you pay for - with the other companies, according to the thousands of complaints, you rarely get what you pay for.

I purchased the Big Deal for $99 that included a foundation inspection and report. It has now been nearly two months since the inspection, and despite repeated requests I still don't have the written report. The company was most eager to send me a "proposal" to fix problems with the unevenness of my floors that it said it had found. (It turns out the proposal included an estimate that was over 200% higher than other estimates I have received from top contractors on Angies List; this also was touted as a "special deal" that would expire in a few days.) When I responded that I first wanted to get the report that was included in the Big Deal before I considered any remediation proposal, I got radio silence for weeks. When I inquired again, I still received no response. Finally, I contacted the company and told them I would have no choice but to report this poor experience to Angies List if I did not hear from them. I promptly got a reply apologizing for the delay and that the inspector would be contacted about the report. That was two weeks ago, and I still have not received the written report. I'm now completely fed up and have decided to file this report.
Description of Work: Inspector came to my house to inspect the foundation. Troy seemed like a nice guy and the visit went well. He said he would issue a report shortly, based on what he had seen.

First, let me start with an apology for the perceived lapse in communication – we call and call and call, but sometimes people aren’t available. I accept responsibility for everything and this member is obviously unhappy. The proposal was sent and the report was that his floors were uneven and needed to be leveled. The proposal spelled that out. If we were 200% higher, then our work would be 200% better or actually done properly as opposed to being done by some company that may or may not know what they’re doing. Again, my apologies to this member for his being fed up.

We called The Foundation Expert because our basement had flooded on several occasions during heavy rainstorms. Sam and Kenny came out to our house at a time convenient to us and evaluated the problem and gave us an estimate. After we agreed to the recommended work they again accomodated our schedule to complete the work. Everything was done in a professional manner, and according to schedule. Inside, they covered all our belongings with plastic sheeting in order to keep dust from getting on them. In addition, some problems we had had with basement wiring were corrected during their work connecting the sump pump. The floor was repaired very well afterwards. Everything was cleaned up nicely after the work was done. We had one minor problem regarding the re-installation of our AC unit (it had to be moved for the excavation). Sam sent someone out the next day to fix the problem. We hope to never need their services again, but we wouldn't hesitate to recommend them in the future.
Description of Work: Outside: Excavating a wall and sealing it where the basement leak was taking place. Refilling the excavation.Inside: Digging up part of the basement floor to install drainage system and sump pump. Repairing the floor afterwards.

What can I say other than Sam Weisgal (the owner) gets it. When I say "it", I mean the concept of professional service and all that concept entails. If you've worked with any contractors on any significant project related to your home, you will know that's no small feat in the home improvement industry.I work in the financial services field, and there's no business more sensitive and scrutinzed than handling someone else's money. From my lens, Sam and his staff deliver a level of service that is the equivalent, on a universal scale, with the 'high touch' service you might receive anywhere in any business. And in my opinion, that's all you really need to know. Nevertheless, I will elaborate with the following observations as they relate to the work he completed on our house: 1. Sam is/was always available. The man doesn't sleep. You call him and he answers almost every time regardless of time of day, weekend, from the beach on vacation, whatever. Sometimes I call late with the intent of leaving a voicemail about something I've just thought of related to the job, and he answers. I apologize for bothering him late, and he says to me (on more than one occasion), "If you call me, you're never bothering me." If I'm up late catching up on email, and send him an email about the job, I get a response in 5 minutes. Then, a follow up email might be sent before I get up in the morning. This is hyper-service, and I've rarely encountered it in any business. 2. They manage expectations. Sam explains what is going to happen, what surprises they might encounter, and gives you a realistic estimate for all of it. 3. They deliver. The job is done right, and they keep at it until you're completely satisfied. Other contractors have remarked on the quality. Quality matches/exceeds prices. 4. Sam immediately addresses problems and makes no excuses. No one is perfect, and Sam sets the bar high for those who work for and with him. I had a bristly conversation with a person in the one of the other companies under Sam that worked on my basement. Sam apologized, made no excuses, addressed it, and there was no further issue. In another instance, a somewhat superficial aspect of our project we discussed - the re-grading of a small slope near one of our basement windows - did not get completed during the first job. It's not actually a current problem, I haven't seen any water at the window during heavy rain. I totally forgot about it but then called Sam about it over a month later. Sam felt bad about it and eventually offered to put in a new window well at that window (80" window) at raw cost, an option we had originally passed up due to cost and lower urgency. 5. The staff is professional. Apart from my one bristly conversation mentioned earlier which was addressed, Sam's staff and workers were terrific. Jamie, the foreman from Apex, was great, and Troy and Juan from Sam's crew were as well. His workers were all friendly and worked non-stop. Sherry, in the office, is very sweet. 6. They exceed expectations. We had other work going on in our basement that couldn't continue without the drainage system going in. Sam understands time is money and fast-tracked our project to minimize the disruption. In another instance, this month, our patio drain backed up in heavy rain and began to flood the adjacent sun room. He sent over his project manager, Troy, at night with a sump pump connected to a firehose to pump the water away at no charge. This issue was not related to the work they were doing, but I didn't know who else to call, and Sam just took care of it. Also, see previous note about window well at cost. I'm sure there's more that I'm leaving out, but I think you get the idea. The contrast between The Foundation Expert and other contractors I have dealt with could not be wider. So, if you want to worry about whether your contractor's going to show up, whether he's going to be hung over, or which of his multiple personalities you'll be dealing with, by all means hire someone else. Or you can hire The Foundation Expert.

Oh my Lord! Now that's a review. This is exactly what I and my team of experts work for. Satisfying the customer - the work is tremendously difficult - you have to see it to believe it. No one wants to pay for work they never planned for - and no one plans for it. You know your new roof will expire in 25 years, or whatever term is warrantied. The foundation? New homes come with a 10 year structural - Hyundai has the same warranty. The foundation of a home normally fails within 25-40 years. But I bet you didn't know that? Regardless this homeowner just bought the place, and was faced with all kinds of water issues from the start. I am if anything, compassionate. I went above and beyond when the flood almost overwhelmed his new home. But that is what we're here for - to serve, which is why, for me, this review was worth 5 times whatever profit we earned. Thanks member. Very much appreciated.

I would highly recommend Sam and his team at The Foundation Expert for the work they performed on our house. While a number of places were focused simply on installing an interior drainage system, Sam took the time to explore a number of other opportunities to prevent water from penetrating the block walls of our home, including waterproofing the outside and performing work in the crawl space. I had a number of conversations with Sam in advance of making a decision and he took the time to explain the proposed scope of the work and even visited the house more than once to re-confirm everything before we signed up. He and his team, led by Troy, were very thorough, always on time and always willing to answer questions during the course of the work. His team was also very courteous and neat (and even willing to try to preserve landscaping), which was very appreciated given the significance of the project. Again, we were very satisfied with The Foundation Expert and would highly recommend Sam and his team to others.
Description of Work: Waterproof our basement, which included the following: - Excavated outside rear corner of home down to the footer (approximately 20 feet) and re-waterproofed exterior - Installed new window well with gravel down to footing of house - Installed interior drain system - Sealed crawl space - installed drain fabric and spray foamed walls, band joists and sprayed fungicide - Extended downspouts on rear of house into dry well - Wire brushed and applied sealer on interior of basement wall

Had them come out to look at some issues with our english basement but the engineer did not think there was a major structural problem. Since we had paid for his time and that assessment was relativley quick, he asked if he could check all around the house. He identified problems I knew about with some rotting on the window sills, a wood panel on the side of the house had termite and water damage, broken front door screen that needed refinishing, and repairing some racoon damage done to our inside window sills (don' t ask). He had an estimator come out and give us a bid. The bid was sent to us over E-mail and was well laid out. Had some initial problems setting up a time for the work to begin but when I started going through Sherry at their main office and everything went smoothly. Troy was the manager of our project and his attention to detail, enthusiam for working on the project really showed. It was great to have a contractor who really seemed to have a passion for his work. He did a great job in doing some of the harder parts of the work himself, but also did a good job overseeing his crew - there was no wasted time. We were very happy with the results and they finished on time. Would recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: Weather proofed the house - mostly the windows, some siding that needed to be reparied, and the garage.

The Foundation Expert did an excellent job on our very challenging assignment. I highly recommend them to anybody who needs serious foundation & waterproofing work. We just bought a very unique contemporary 14,000 sq. ft. house built on a hill. We got a great deal on the house because it had many issues, one of which was a mildew-type smell in the lower levels and other signs of water damage. I didn't know much about waterproofing, foundations, crawlspaces, radon, or drainage. Now I feel like I do, thanks to Sam & his team. I also feel much better about how waterproof our house is. We got several quotes for waterproofing the lower level, and The Foundation Expert was the most expensive. However, I don't think the other organizations really understood the extent of the problem and were only going to superficially fix the symptoms, not the root cause. In the end, I feel we really got our money's worth, or even more. Just to excavate a drainage area in the crawlspace & refill it with gravel was a major effort. They literally removed many tons of dirt bucket by bucket through a tiny access panel. They then refilled it with tons of gravel through the same 3'x2' access panel. They had half a dozen or more guys working for about 2 weeks just doing those 2 activities. They moved the excavated dirt about 100 yards away to a location on our property that needed fill dirt. They also dug down under the existing footer / lintel to pour a new 6' tall concrete wall. The floors of this house step down a hill, and the original design should have had these foundation walls poured originally. (Other service providers weren't going to do this). They also did an excellent job on our flagstone / blue-stone patio. It had to be dug up to pour one of the walls, but they put it back together better than it was originally. At first I was a little confused / concerned about the different "teams" doing work. Sam Weisgal explained that he has a couple of shared partners in his company and/or other companies. Some of them share ownership & profits. The "foreman" (not sure if that's the proper term) we had were Dan & Troy and they were excellent. It never turned out to be an issue. I guess with all the different trades that are needed in a big project like this (e.g. masons for the flagstone patio) that you can't keep all on-staff. They also helped with some guidance to some other contractors we had doing interior remodeling. Sam's crews were all very polite & cleaned up after themselves. If you're looking to have foundation / waterproofing / basement work done, these guys are the pros!
Description of Work: INSIDE THE CRAWLSPACEExcavated & removed extensive soil from a crawlspace through a 3'x2' access hole.Poured two 8'x'6' concrete wall where there should have been one originally.Fill in 30'x6'x6' area with gravel through the same 3'x2' access hole.Installed drainage system including sump pump.Installed 22mil vapor barrier & sealed to walls.Sprayed fungicide.Coordinating with a radon remediation specialist. OUTSIDETore up a flagstone patio & dug down 8' to install one of the two concrete wall.Remove old unused window wells / vents.Installed drainage system.Reinstall flagstone patio & repoint mortar.Move & re-install two HVAC units.

TERRIBLE. I absolutely would NOT recommend their services to anyone.
Description of Work: The representative come to the house, looked around and said he'd have an estimate to me in a few days... I think he meant a few months!!! After several calls, I FINALLY got an estimate. It was so basic and nondescriptive, it was absolute garbage. I asked for some options, as I was in need of rebuilding my basement wall, Those options were not included in the estimate and I emailed the company back asking for those options to be itemized on the bid and i NEVER heard back from them. If they didn't want the job, all they had to do was say so! Their initial estimate came in higher than ANY of the other three and since the engineer didn't take a good look at the work that really needed attention, it could have been a disaster. I later hired another company and a REAL engineer. That cost was greater than the $98.00 the Foundation "Experts" (ha, ha) but the results were beautifully written and the engineer looked at every single issue in the basement. The bottom line with Foundation Experts is YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR in the engineers' visit, and I'm glad I stopped there... That was all I needed to know this would be a disaster if I had hired them to do the work. UPDATE: OMG. I NEVER said "white people only" what I said is that I want someone there at all times who is English speaking so I can communicate with them. I am NOT a prejudice person at all. I would NEVER say such BS. Second, I know my wall needs rebuilding and I'm actually having that done as we speak. Third, the rep who came out (DAN) was badmouthing all the waterproofing companies! He was telling me crap about the guy who originally waterproofed the house (before I moved in) and who he's now working for. I am only known by the company who did the LAST waterproofing job and no others would know me. It must be the previous owners of that property. I just wanna get straight though, that I would NEVER say ANYTHING like what Dan is saying. All I wanted was to be able to communicate with the crew. I have a GREAT crew on the site right now. There is always someone there who speaks English; none of the others have to as long as there is at least one I can communicate with. Dan is absolutely lying.

First, let’s start with this – the member stated that she would “only allow white, English speaking laborers on her property.” Where I come from, the word bigot comes to mind. The member is known throughout the waterproofing industry and no one, including me, will do anything for her. She had Aquaguard waterproof her home about 10 years ago. That system works, but she needs her walls rebuilt, not a drainage system. She has structural issues – by the way, I’m the only Super Service Award winner for Foundation Repair. But I only work for customers I like – and she is as distasteful a human being as I have encountered in my 2000 plus inspections. Her home is falling apart, needed to be rebuild 20 years ago, but Aquaguard duped her into thinking she only needed an interior drain system. That system, which still works fine, will not do anything for her structural issues. Her walls are falling down and the water that enters her home does so through the walls; she bought a drainage system which deals with seepage at the floor level, not an exterior waterproofing system; she still doesn’t understand the nature of her situation. The report is not really worth responding to except to state that I wouldn’t do business with this woman under any circumstances and she got extremely angry when I told her in my language what I really thought of her. She had the money, wanted my company to do the work. Not going to happen.

Mr. Weisgal came out to look at a crack in our living room wall and assured us that it was not due to any foundation issues as we had been informed that it was by one of his competitiors. He took a very careful look around our property and suggeted that we install a sump pum at the bottom of our basement steps. The work was scheduled for a Saturday morning. The work crew arrived promptly at the agreed upon time, completed the work and cleaned up nicely. We will definitely use them again.

First, our apologies, a report was sent, obviously not received, and we'll refund his money since this member thought the analysis was BS. Then there's the comment about 2 months ago.At the time of the inspection I thought this member was a very nice person, but obviously this member is angry about something, because there is great exaggeration of times. This is the first I am hearing about this but I inspected his property on March 23 and we sent his report exactly 5 days ago. Maybe it just seemed like 2 months. Again my apologies. For those who may be reading this, and a few more reviews with F's F's F's etc, please allow me to explain. Last year Angie's LIst BEGGED me to do a BIG DEAL. I refused, refused, refused, and then in January of this year, I agreed to allow them to send an email discounting my inspection fee down from $350 to $98. To be sent in February and I was told to expect 30-45 responses. They sent out the emails in January and early February and I received 162 responses - 162 Angie List Members purchased Big Deal Coupons. Angie's said it was an incredible response. I was overwhelmed. Why? Because I do not hire salespeople. I conduct the inspections, my engineers conduct inspections, my project managers who did not conduct inspections now conduct inspections - if you do the math, 3 a day times 30, plus, on top of the 162 responses received, I normally receive 12-15 requests for service every week. As a result, a few members have not received our inspections with the enthusiasm and joy that others have. For this, I apologize. Please forgive me - our only intent is to help homeowners. If you read the reviews where we actually contracted with members, you'll realize like they have that we do excellent work, we are caring and compassionate people who are honestly helping homeowners deal with issues in an industry that is full of sharks. One last point - as for scheduling, we are contractors and engineers. We actually work during the daylight hours and do not conduct inspections in the evenings. I get dirty because we are working in the dirt. In fact, in the inspection field, almost all inspections are conducted during the day. We leave the evenings to sales organizations that want both spouses present for a high pressure sales meeting. We find that the day tends to shed light on 'things' and we can see the foundations better in the daylight.

I have a serious problem in my crawl space due to settlement and mold issues. I had contacted The Foundation Expert company a couple months ago and the day before the appoint ment I received a call from their office to cancel the appointment due to the Rep's illness. I contacted them again and on April 7th their representative, Troy Michael, came over. He was polite and very pleasant. He looked in the crawl space and gave me a good understanding of the issues at hand. He told me he was going to send me a written report and quote. As he was walking out the door, he asked me if it was a free quote or had I been asked to pay a fee. I told him I didn't remember and so he called the company and was told I was required to pay a $150 fee. I couldn't find my wallet at that moment and so Troy told me to call the company when I find it and make the payment. I called later that evening and was put through to the voicemail of someone called Sherry where I left a mwssage asking them to call me back. I didn't hear anything for almost 10 days and called them again and left another message on their voicemail; again I heard nothing. On Friday, April 13th I called Troy and left a message on his cell phone number (his number is the only number on his business card), again i heard nothing. On Monday April 16th, I finally called their office to inquire. I was told they'll tell Troy to call me. Troy called shortly thereafter but had no clue or recollection of who I was or the reason for my call. I told him I had left a message on his cell number and he claimed he hardly ever returns any messages left on his cell phone! He then remembered and said that the report was at the office awaiting my payment of $150. I called theirt office again to pay the fee and once again I was put into Sherry's voicemail. On Wednesday, April 18th; I finally called Troy to tell him that i was done with The Foundation Expert and will leave my comments on Angie's List and BBB. Minutes thereafter, Sherry called me to apologize for the delay. I told her i was no longer willing to pay the fee and she said she was not going to charge me after all the delays and will e-mil me the report and asked me to consider retaining their services. About a couple of hours later, I received a call from someone who introduced himself as "Sam" the owner. His tone and his demeanor were condescending and rude. He claimed they never do free inspections and i tried to tell him that I had tried to pay their fees several times and that his employee Sherry had agreed now to send me the report, but he wouldn't let me speak and kept talking over me, so I finally hng up on him and contacted another company. I find The Foundation Expert to be an unprofessional and unreliable business.

Once again, a poor review from a member who had no work done. This is the response from my personal assistant, Sherry who got truly upset when she saw this review that he posted on Angie's List: "I have no record of this customer being scheduled & cancelled due to Rep’s illness, this year. He didn't call in January or February during the Big Deal which was only $98. I spoke to the client for the first time on March 29th (and I am the only one scheduling appointments) and scheduled his inspection for April 7th between 2:30-3:00pm. During our conversation it was explained that the inspection cost is $150 and that we do not do “free estimates”. This is what I tell everyone. There is no mention of my initial conversation with him in which we discussed the inspection fee of $150 and that this was after a promotional discount was applied to the normal fee of $250. I was not in the office Saturday evening, April 7th to take his payment information, thus he was forwarded to my voicemail. I was also not in the office on Sunday, April 8th. I called him back on Monday, April 9th @ 10:43am, he told me that he was with a client and would call me back when he could. He never did. Troy then let me know that this member had called Troy’s cell number regarding payment and his proposal/report. So I called him back a few hours later (on Friday, April 13th) and again no answer so I left a message for him including the office number. On Monday April 16th, I finally got a hold of him, AGAIN, and he explained to me that he was supposed to get a “free estimate”. Again I explained to him that we do not do “free estimates”. He told me that our website says nothing about charging for the inspection. I directed him the page on our site that covers the inspection details, so that he could see that. When he saw that he then said he was not told by the person he scheduled with that there would be a fee for the inspection. When confronted with the fact that I am the one that scheduled the inspection for him, he denied that we spoke of the fee. I am an honest person and I do not lie. It is not in my nature, and Sam would fire me." END OF 1st RESPONSE This is Sam’s Response - Basically I feel the entire review is a lie. The member states he contacted us months ago - I have the physical evidence / phone records - it was March 29. He called up, Sherry booked an appointment almost immediately for April 7th. We do not do FREE ESTIMATES and every person who wants an appointment is told the difference - call a sales organization and you'll get a FREE estimate. They work on commission and make nothing if nothing is sold. We conduct real inspections at a standard unmatched by others in our field. Sometimes we do them for free. Sometimes. Sometimes we find nothing wrong. Every home is different. When this member spoke with Troy on Wednesday the 18th, he said he was going to complain to the BBB and Angie's List if we didn’t send his report - as for this person threatening to complain, I won't be held hostage by him or any Angie's List member or non-member. I only heard about this today (Monday the 23rd) which is the last time Sherry spoke with him. I immediately called him today the 23rd, (not a few hours later on the 18th as he states – but today –and I have those phone records too) and told him to keep his money and go complain. This is the first time I spoke with him, this morning – the 23rd (not the 18th like he claims) and told him we didn't want his money and didn't want to work for him. If that is rude and condescending, then I am rude and condescending. But I choose who I do business with, who I work for, whose home I repair. And I don't do business with dishonest people. We run our company differently - we have no incentive to have work done for people when it isn't needed. Nobody in my organization is paid by commission. Salary and Profit sharing. And we're honest - we come out and do an inspection, we expect to be paid. Especially when crawling around in nasty, smelly, moldy, gas laden crawlspaces. I clearly state on my website and on my Angie's List page - no free estimates. We conduct inspections to find out IF there is something to be fixed. We work hard, we're honest, and we have fair pricing. This is the most you can ask from a contractor. Lucky if you get that much. Please read the reviews from people who we have done work for if you want the truth.

When our basement flooded back in September, during Hurricane Irene, we knew we were looking at a major repair/renovation. As soon as the insurance company cleared us to get estimates, we called Sam, who sent Brady out within 24 hours. He spent at least an hour in the basement, assessing and measuring and answering the myriad of questions I posed. It wasn't until the end of February that we received our insurance check and I was concerned that we would have to start the process all over again. Not so! Even though his prices had gone up, Sam still honored the original estimate and was able to start the project within a week. His guys were punctual, respectful and hard-working. Rudy was our project manager and he was superb. He kept me in the loop through the entire project and was nothing but professional and accommodating. He and his crew worked through weekends (with our blessing) and completed the entire job in about two weeks. They cleaned up all of their materials and by the time they left, the place was pretty much spotless. My basement is now a beautiful, completed room, instead of a dark, cinderblock- walled cave. My son is thrilled with his new room and bathroom, and we will never have to worry about leaks again because of the excellent work completed by The Foundation Expert. I would not hesitate to hire them in the future for other projects in my house. Thanks for everything!!!

Once again, a review that makes work like this worthwhile. Our focus is helping others and this member and her family were devastated by the hurricanes and tropical storms in September. Their insurance company took forever to settle but thankfully they did and we were able to give them a brand new basement. Especially their young son who hadn't been living downstairs for months and was able to return to a brand new bedroom and bathroom and newly renovated basement for hosting parties. He was ecstatic!

He wrote a detailed report on his findings and made several recommendations on what needed to be done. The rear wall on the left side of the house is bowed in. Other walls are structurally unsound and would need to be completely rebuilt. Horizontal cracks are traveling throughout the block walls. The house is in very bad condition and his unbiased observation was to demolish, sell or repair/rebuild the house (which would be very costly). We were given an estimate of the approximate cost of fixing the house. There was no pressure for us to use their services to repair/rebuld the house. We will have to give the recommendations serious thought. Fortunately, no one is living there at this time. I would definitely use the Foundation's services again!
Description of Work: Mr. Lawrence Weisgal inspected the home (my sister's) and did a thorough job. He took numerous photos and walked through the inside and outside of the house looking for problem areas. He spent a good deal of time going over what he thought needed to be done.

Thanks for your kind review. We really had bad news for this member. Every now and then we inspect a home that is beyond repair. It needs to be rebuilt, or demolished and rebuilt. Either case is devastating, and extremely expensive. So we're doubly appreciative of the fact that here's a person who in spite of the dire situation, still found time to give praise. Thanks again.

He was very personable and knew exactly what he was doing. He always answered my calls and stayed in touch with me. He did the inspection and gave me the written report a few days later. I am considering from the report what I will have done. I will certainly will use him if I end up going with his suggestions.

Initially (within minutes actually) I got an email thanking me for my coupon purchase etc. I Set up an appointment for the inspection. Once they showed up it turned into a sales call, not the inspection I thought I paid for. They pointed out a few obvios things like wood rot, and painting but no real inspection of my foundation or any structural report as I was lead to believe. The initial meeting was left with a promise to send someone out to give me an estimate on some repair work but I haven't heard from them since. I tried to call once but no one picked up. Part of my failing grade has to go to Angie's list for offering a coupon with no real value. Most companies making a sales call don't charge for the privilege. Angie's list should be more careful before offering coupons.

It seems lately, with the large volume of business we’ve been doing, we’ve received a volume of great reviews, but we’re also receiving a few negative reviews. The question is, “Are these reviews you can trust?” as Angie’s states everywhere. Our negative reviews all come from members who had no work done by our Company. These may be people that we didn’t immediately call back within some ridiculously allotted time; or they may be members who purchased a $98 Big Deal coupon for a Foundation Inspection (we normally charge $350-$475) and were unhappy with what they received for $98. It’s real simple – please say so, let us know. We will gladly issue a refund for $98. Here’s one member who states that I responded immediately within minutes – yet I received a D for responsiveness. Is this being honest? Gives me a B for punctuality – this person was 20 minutes late showing up at their own house – I was already in my truck, leaving the property. I was 10 minutes early. I get a B. Where is this a review you can trust? The same customer then states this was a sales call, yet I never mentioned a price for anything, didn’t attempt to sell anything since there were no foundation issues. A few cracks here and there, but no issues. In fact, I don’t carry any paperwork or blank contracts that anyone could sign, even if they wanted to purchase something or if I even offered to sell something. I did offer (as he states) to send back someone to give a price on a complete exterior renovation - completely redoing the siding and roofing which was totally rotted. The foundation was fine. Some members who have purchased coupons from us do have homes with some serious foundation issues, some do not have any foundation issues but were just concerned over minor cracks, or just wanted an evaluation or analysis of the health of their home that only cost $98 and gave them peace of mind. We spend roughly 2 hours of our time on each inspection – some of that time is getting to the appointment in DC Metro traffic and most is spent dedicated to the inspection and any questions the homeowner may have. We do not conduct sales call. They are professional inspections and we know what we’re doing. Please read our reviews by our real customers, by the homeowners who have contracted with us, hired us. Find out why our real Angie List customers love us. We’re honest, and we do excellent work. Every now and then, we come across a homeowner, give them excellent advice, and we get a review like this. No need for a spiteful complaint. Just call or email us and ask for a no questions asked refund or ask while we’re there. Please realize these negative reviews do not truly reflect who we are as a company and the type of work we do.

I could have had a complete basement dug for $20,000.00. The $98.00 I spend with him was a ripoff.
Description of Work: Sam entered my crawl space and took photos. He looked on the muddy side of the yard and suggested I remove 3 trees. He was to email me photos of the crawl space, but stated he accidently deleted them and said he was sick for a week. He sent his brother out to take more photos and then sent a $1500.00 estimate to correct the drainage problem.

This member, a senior citizen, just moved here from up north, bought a home with a crawl space in Mt. Vernon where the water table is usually higher than the ground level. She suffered a tremendolus family tragedy and was left with a newborn granddaughter to take care of, a lovely little girl a few months old. When I arrived and initially looked at the crawlspace, I saw one of the worst crawl areas, and was hesitant about entering, but I went back to my vehicle to get a full tyvek chemical protection suit, helmet, goggles, gloves, knee pads and respirator. First, you literally had to crawl - the head space to crawl around was only 2 feet high, but the biggest problem was that the crawlspace was flooded with 6 inches to 1 foot of standing water, with dead rodents, trash, insects, mold growing everywhere; a completely contaminated area that was huge in space - approximately 1200 square feet. A crawlspace with an air quality that is extremely unhealthy to the inhabitants of any home, with soil gases, radon, mold, and other airborne microbial contaminants that affect and impact the health of adults, especially children under the age of 4 and she has a newborn literally sleeping over top of this area. My pictures were corrupted because the camera fell in the water. I sent my brother back out to take pictures again. He stated that he would quit before he would ever do that again - that I should have refunded the $98 and refused the inspection. The price I quoted her to repair the crawl, to drain it, to clean it out, dig it out, remove all the garbage, the contaminated soil, install drainage, pumps, ground cover, vapor barriers, remediate for mold and insulate; and to drain her yard was $15,000, not $1500 as she states. This is my cost on a project this size. Normally I would charge closer to $22,500. What this member did not realize was that I was being charitable to her. By the way, to build her a basement would cost closer to $75,000, not $20,000. The worst part was her stating that $98 was a rippoff. I will ask Angies List if I can post the pictures of what we crawled through. Normally, I would refund this $98 to the member, but I spent more than $98 in Tyvek Chemical suits, gloves, camera, masks - forget the time for two professionals. I'm still shocked that I was attempting to be compassionate here, cutting her a break in price, and she thinks I'm ripping her off.

The company came on time and cleaned up well. They quoted the job for 3 days and it took 2 days. They didn't damage plants further away than they had said would be at risk. The deck was reassembled and waterproofed and it looks great. We're very happy with the job.
Description of Work: We found some old water damage in a corner of our crawlspace. We had 2 companies come out to look at it. We choose The Foundation Expert because Sam was very knowledgable, because he didn't recommend waterproofing the other corner without damage (which the other company suggested), and because they could handle taking down part of our deck (to get to the damage) and re-do it. The quote above also includes re-waterproofing the deck. The other company was a little cheaper, but we felt comfortable with Sam and the company.

We really appreciate this nice review and that they are 'very happy!' The member gives a B for price and I understand, but we're not cheap and the work in our industry is truly difficult no matter the degree of quality. We however are honest and do great work - our reviews reflect this, but it costs more to have experienced labor, to do things correctly, and go beyond what is quoted and do more, so our prices may sometimes 'seem' to be high but the short and long term costs are excellent. My philosophy is I would rather pay a little more and get what I am paying for, than underpay and get nothing or worse, have my home destroyed - I hope you're like minded.

I had a finished basement that, with heavy rains, would have water seepage down the walls and across the baseboards and carpet. Each time, the carpet would get saturated and mildew was slowly forming on and behind the drywall that was staying damp. I would worry whenever i heard the weather forecast announce several days of rain. I finally decided that, I couldn't ignore the problem any longer. I called TFE after finding them on Angie's List and reading their reports. I called Sam and within a few days, he came to assess my basement. He performed a thorough inspection, removed some drywall to be able to assess the foundation wall behind, and explained to me the options. Sam worked with my schedule and was able to start the following week. His crew, lead by Rudy, was punctual, very professional, and did excellent work. They drapped the area to keep dust to a minimum, and cleaned up every evening before leaving. I am extremely satisfied with their work and it was a pleasure dealing with them. Now, I no longer have to dread the R word ( Rain !), and can enjoy a clean, mildew free and dry basement. Thank you Sam, Rudy, and all the TFE crew.
Description of Work: Removed old drywall and insulation that had mildew. Installed an indoor drain system that included removing concrete flooring, digging a trench ,installing appropriate drainage system and Miradrain, filling in with gravel, concrete and placing new sump pumps. Also refinishing the framing, installing new insulation and drywall, repainting.

Samuel Weisgal and his team worked quickly and professionally to fix my basement leak issue. They were easy to work with and Mr. Weisgal was very responsive to email questions over the time period of the work. I was at work most of the time while they were at my house but Mr. Weisgal's team worked seamlessly with my wife. She especially liked the TFE folks because they also took time to explain the work to her instead of talking past her to me (as she felt others did who bid on the project). I will be recommending the TFEs to my neighbors when their basement leaks are discovered (it is inevitable, right?) Also, working with the TFE went well enough that I am asking them to bid on my basement interior remodel project as well. (TFE also does complete remodeling projects as well--check out their website).
Description of Work: The Foundation Expert Provided the following Service: -Excavate around left half of front of house and five feet around the corner to the depth of the foundation footings--about 4 feet. --Applied a waterproofing liquid-rubber sealant and covered that with a rigid foam protectant barrier. --Installed a stone and pipe drain around the foundation to an exterior sump pump with drain on far side of front yard. --Replaced removed earth and replanted all plants as they were before the work. --TFE also drilled several holes in a brick retaining wall to ensure proper drainage.

I contacted The Foundation Experts and spoke with Sam. I explained the problem I was having in my home and he asked me how much could I afford for a home inspection. I explained to him I did not have any money for an inspection, which is why I placed a request on his website for a "Free Consultation". He stated to me not all consultations are "Free". Since I live in Waldorf he would need to charge $250.00 to cover the cost of his travel which would be an hour coming and going. He then went on to state he doesn't need money and proceeded to run down to me his years of experience. He stated that I should to take pictures of the damage and email the pictures to him to avoid having to pay the $250.00 fee. I will not be contacting this company again for this service or any future services. It needs to be stated clearly on the website that they do not provide services in the Southern Maryland area. Additionally it needs to be noted that "Free Consultations" are not necessarily free. Sam stated to me he technically is conducting a consultation by phone and that his considered a "Free" consultation. That is a very misleading statement. Good luck to anyone who is willing to take the chance with The Foundation Experts, first impressions are lasting impressions with me, especially when your talking about conducting business.

Once again, under attack from a member I did not do work for. I apologize if I miscommunicated with you.I received a call from this member, she was very nice on the phone, and after we spoke for 20 minutes about the sinking floor in her home in Waldorf, I explained I do not do FREE estimates, and that my inspections are paid inspections. It is CLEARLY stated everywhere. In fact, I don't know of anyone who does free inspections. I didn't tell her, but the Angie's List Map does not cover Charles County, MD, and certainly not Walfdorf. Free Estimates? That's a salesperson you're dealing with. She asked about my free consultations and I explained that speaking with me for 20 minutes was a free consultation, and that I thought she needed a home inspection as she doesn't have a foundation or basement. She has a SLAB ON GRADE. I don't like this type of construction as I feel it is 'cheap.' All homes in this area should have footings below the frost line. I also told her she could take some pictures and send them to me, and I would take a look and give her a call back with my comments, possibly saving her some money. She hesitated so I explained to her my 39+ years of experience. I never told her I would charge her $250 for my travel as I never planned on going down. I did state that she just missed a BIG DEAL coupon, which reduces my $350 down to $98, and that I would be willing to find someone to go down, spend 4 hours of travel, for $250, because it's at least a 2 hour drive down, and 2 hours back, not 1 hour. It's 1 hour just to get to route 5. She then said she didn't have any money, and maybe this is where she got angry at me, because I stated, "if you don't have the money, how are you going to fix it?" I am busy. Extremely busy - 81 big deal coupons and I receive another 10 requests every day for inspections. I AM THE ONLY SUPER SERVICE AWARD WINNER IN FOUNDATION REPAIR IN METRO DC AREA. Why? Because I am honest, and I do get mostly honest reviews. And my work is excellent, not good, excellent. Sometimes, there is no pleasing everyone, sometimes people - even I - miscommunicate. I don't need the money - I don't do this work for the money, but I usually don't do it for free, although I have reviews from people where after meeting them, I waived the inspection fee or only charged a bottle of water. I've rebuilt complete walls at cost where no profit was forthcoming. But my time is dedicated right now to people around the Capital Beltway. Every now and then I'll make it into Baltimore, or Frederick, but they are only an hour away. If you read this, I apologize if I miscommunicated with you. I apologize if you were insulted when I stated if you don't have the money, how are you going to do the work. But, for anyone reading this, I don't pull punches, I tell it like it is - especially about foundations, and the work that is necessary to bring your home and the Indoor Air Quality to a healthy state. You want a FREE consultation? Please give me a call. I'll explain what's happening to your home over the phone if you can describe it accurately and send pictures upon request. If you want a site visit, I charge. Its well worth it. If you don;t think you got your moneys worth, then I won't take the payment. :)

This was a VERY intrusive and intensive job, and they had 2-3 guys on the job 8+ hours/day for a full week. One of the three owners/managers was almost always on site, and their crew was very professional and neat. Each night before they left, the cleaned up all debris out of the yard, covered the work with a tarp, etc. They protected my front door during the entire repair. I had one very small complaint: an uneven flagstone by the front door, and they rectified it within about 12 hours of my calling them. Overall, could not been more pleased. I hope I never need a foundation repair again, but they're who I'll call if I do!
Description of Work: I had water leaking into my basement from around my front porch. I called 5+ companies. Only three showed up for estimates. Two showed up and gave estimates for work that would not have corrected the issue. Sam's estimate was significantly higher than any other estimate, BUT, he was the only one who seemed to understand the issue. He gutted the basement room where the issue was and replaced a sill plate and band board inside that had rotted out. Then, from the outside he demolished my flagstone porch to get to the point of intrusion, repaired the foundation, waterproofed the outside, put a protective mat in place, backfilled with gravel for drainage, and then rebuilt the porch.

Sam Weisgal was a pleasure to talk to. As for responsiveness, I called the Foundation Expert and Sam called me back the next day. He scheduled an inspection with us for two days later and showed up on time. Now that's what I call responsive. I also really appreciated Sam telling us some things we could do ourselves to save money - that's pretty rare these days. Thank You!
Description of Work: I used the Angie's List coupon and got a special deal on our inspection. Sam Weisgal of The Foundation Expert inspected a leak we have in our basement where water was coming in from outside. Sam gave us a full survey of the house and spent an hour meticulously inspecting our basement and the perimeter of our house. He diagnosed our leak after climbing up our hill in the mud and pulling out his measuring tape (and kindly put booties on his shoes before entering the house). Our problem had to do with a steep grade, lack of proper drainage, and a hole in the brick wall where water forced itself in over the years. He told us exactly what needed to be done to fix it. Sam also identified another issue with our basement wall that we were unaware of. We're on a tight budget and Sam was incredibly kind and recommended some drainage measures that we can take care of ourselves in the near-term. We'll be contacting him this Spring once weather permits an excavation of the leak and hope to work with The Foundation Expert again.

This member and her husband were really nice people who had just purchased a house last year and had some issues which the home inspector did not find, that were existing before the sale. They had a lot of issues, but not a lot of money, so I explained how they could possibly do the work themselves, with detailed explanations. Whether you can afford the work or not, I'm simply going to tell you the truth. I'll even explain it to a contractor you like, but may not understand the correct approach or may know, but is trying to sell you something in your comfort zone. I am interested first in a healthy home for the structure of the home, and then for the people who live there or who will live there. If you're a selling agent interested in a commission, you may not want me to inspect, because I kill more real estate deals than I approve. Had I been here before this sale, the owner or seller would have had to do a lot of work. One home at a time, I am improving the quality of home ownership. Please read my website - thefoundationexpert dot com if you want to learn - it is an educational site to educate - not to sell.

This member has a few issues, but not as serious as she thought. She thinks her home isn't great, I actually loved her home. She also is a wonderful person who I think is being preyed upon by other contractors who just want to steal her money. She has some exterior drainage issues, a few cracks in her wall, but no real water intrusion. Her house is in wonderful shape for any age, around 50 years old, even nicer than new homes with only a few years. I was happy to be helpful, but we don't do FREE ESTIMATES. Exact quotes when work needs to be done. In her case, I waived the $350 inspection fee. I sometimes do that if I like the customer. I enjoy the finer things in life, but I don't really need the money; I'm about helping people, making amends so I can go up, not down when the time comes.
