Everything went very well. He was prompt and gave us very good information on what repairs are necessary for our house. We have taken his advice.
Description of Work: Sam gave us a written estimate for all the repairs that should be taken care of . We did not require his specific services.

Thanks for an honest review, one you can trust. These members had some water problems that were being caused by above grade issues and had some roofing problems. Their foundation was in excellent condition, especially for an older home. I do appreciate the fact they took the time to give me good grades though.

It went fine and as expected. They were kind of backed up due to the response of this deal so we had some issues getting scheduled initially. Overall, it was fine though.

I was disappointed because they said they were engineers and would look at water proofing from an engineering standpoint. I showed them what my problems were, but their report had just said exactly what I had told them. For a first time go around where you do not know what is wrong, they probably would do an excellent job, but since I knew what these problems were, this was not what I needed.

I appreciate the good grades - the A's from this customer. The comments made don't reflect those grades though. I'm a little confused. If you know what is going on - you're absolutely convinced, in my opinion, you don't need an inspection, you need a proposal. I didn't get a grade for price even though she paid $98 for an inspection. I tell my customers, if you're not happy with the inspection, don't pay me, but I don't work for free.I actually offer a discount coupon now to AL members for $179 instead of my $250 fee. I'm not a salesperson, I don't carry paperwork with me to consummate a contract at your kitchen table like most other "Waterproofers" - I'm a Foundation Repair Expert - I come out, analyze your situation. I don't take anyone's report but my own. She just happened to know what was going on around her home. So why did she call me out? She did seem pleased with the inspection as though I had confirmed what she thought - maybe that's why I got good grades.

All in all, a good experience. Mr. Weisgal is straightforward and honest inspector by my estimation. He even told me that his contractor services were "high retail" and that I could probably do better in price than him, but that I just needed to insure that the work was done properly and didn't have to be done redone at even greater expense.
Description of Work: Mr. Sam Weisgal from Foundation Expert arrived at my house early. We first went through the house looking at issues I'd noticed that could be caused by a foundation issue, and then we went outside and he inspected the exterior of the house before going into the crawlspace. Mr. Weisgal then went over his observations and findings with me in detail. The only thing I had to ask for twice was the written report, which he sent to me via email later.

Thanks for the positive grades. We work hard and this is often the profit we receive - praise. This member purchased a house and was in essence 'duped' by a home inspector and Realtor. He purchased a home that already had structural issues. I inspected, explained what and why, and how to fix, different options for who could do the work. Please take note - before you purchase, have us inspect your home. It could save you tens of thousands of dollars.

I've had four waterproofing type companies come to my home. I'd not been pleased with their recommendations, the forceful manner in which they made them, nor their price estimates for improving the ability of my basement to stay dry. In addition their recommendations conflicted from each other. My experience with other companies left me confused and indecisive, so I read some information on the Internet about basements and waterproofing. After all the effort, I still hadn't made a decision about what I wanted to do about further protecting my basement from flooding. For me, the price was right for this Big Deal ($98) to engage a certified engineer and another opinion of my situation. I was pleased with Sam's verbal inspection and recommendations as well as the written Report and Proposal. Sam has a strong, outgoing personality, but I also believe he is very qualified in what he does. He doesn't use scare tactics or give you a hard sell. He'll explain what you can do on your own as well as what his company can do for you. He tells you what he sees, what he recommends and he gave me good news about my situation, too. I don't really have a water problem, but I can improve my situation. After working with Sam, I feel confident in his recommendation and plan to use his services in the future to improve my current sump and add another pit in the opposite side of the basement.
Description of Work: The Chief Inpector, Sam, walked around the exterior of my house and inpected the basement interior with me present. He provided constant commentary on what he saw with regard to modifications that were done to the home (built in 1921) as well as his recommendations for improving the management of water in the basement and protection of other areas of the home from water damage. About two weeks later he emailed a Report & Proposal to me.

First, thanks to this member for praising my inspection services. I work extremely hard to help homeowners. I have posted this LONG response a few times already, BUT it is important for members to understand where I am coming from. I DON"T WORK FOR FREE. I get paid for my inspections which are honest appraisals of what is going on in your home, your foundation and the grounds surrounding your home. If I can't figure it out, I send my engineer or one of my trade partners who understand 'stuff'' that may be confusing to me. All in all, you get a service others do not provide. FREE ESTIMATES - pulease - if you think you're getting something for free - well you are. You're getting a FREE SALES PITCH, and usually from companies that have horrible ratings or horrible reviews. A company that has THREE LETTERS comes to mind. Be careful of Helical Piers which reach all the way to bedrock. Please do not be fooled by some of these companies which miraculously have compiled 150 reports in less than a year - their sales people are writing most of these reports. How do I know? I know the sales people, I know the companies and their owners, and I know their lack of ethics and their high state of greed. Don't worry - they'll get sorted out eventually, spiritually. But right now I am on a mission - to help homeowners correctly fix issues occurring in their home. Read my reviews - the false or negative reviews you cannot trust - read my comments. The A reviews? I challenge any member to challenge my reviews. I have contracts for EVERY review which states work has been done. I have names, phone numbers, email addresses and most are what I would now call friends, if not friendly customers. EVERY one is verifiable. Are the other reviews verifiable from companies that are posting record numbers of reviews? I don't think so. Why is it that I'm the ONLY SUPER SERVICE AWARD WINNER for FOUNDATION REPAIR in 3 states? I do not do free estimates - I don't ESTIMATE. I write proposals, and then contracts - WHY? Because I am a General Contractor and Engineering firm. Not a Home Improvement SALES Company. I have NO SALESPEOPLE. I have people like me who actually do the work and do it in MY NAME. MY COMPANY. Sometimes, if you as the customer know EXACTLY what is happening in your home, I'll come out and give you a free inspection because you're saving me time. Or give you a FREE PHONE CONSULTATION. I do that often - it saves me time. My time is valuable - I am absolutely sure you think your time is valuable - you want a free estimate? Then don't complain when you get ripped off by these high pressure sales people who actually don't have a clue when it comes to foundation repair and basement waterproofing. Don't be surprised when they sit at your breakfast or dining room table and pull out paperwork and contracts, and won't leave your home until they pressure you for 2 hours. Don't be surprised when you get 21 follow up phone calls. Don't be surprised when your price miraculously drops by thousands for every hour of your time they waste or with every follow up call. Don't be surprised when they get a "sudden cancellation" and they can miraculously discount their original price by 20-50% or more. Beware and be aware. Fair warning given with compassion. If you want the truth - and I do not pull any punches - then call and schedule me for a paid inspection. I am booked 5 weeks out, but sometimes for emergencies or urgency I can squeeze you in. At the end, if you don't think it was worth it, Please don't pay me. Angie's List Special right now - $179. Inspecting wet, nasty Crawl Spaces are $250 if I have to crawl and put on Tyvek Suits and respirators - too much work, too much back ache for anything less - again - at the end, don't pay if you don't get your money's worth. What do you have to lose? Your hard earned savings if you hire some of these other companies that seem to have a high rating. You never know - even a blind squirrel can find a nut.

He gave me an estimate for solving my water problem out in my backyard. He was very, very timely and concerned that he had to postpone our appointment because he was sick. He was on top of being customer oriented. He was very thorough and did a fine job of looking over my problem. The price for his estimate is very reasonable.

When I arrange the appointment I was sure to give the Assistant my home address not the address list on my credit card. So the day of the appointment I waited over an hour. When I return to my apartment my neighbor told me that they he had a long discussion with the foundation expert and they where all up in my business. I had to reschedule and that took close to two months. The day of the appointment a Foundation expert came and I taught he was someone from the neighborhood the way he was dressed in( T-shirt worn outside of his jean pants). He did the inspection by just walking into my basement and around the house. He explain to me what he taught and than gave a estimate. He left and I never heard from the company again even after repeated phone calls to give me the written report that was included in my fee. UPDATE: 6/18/2014 I had not received the report I purchased. I am sure that after all this time and with the digital systems and meticulous records that could have been done after I first complained either to me or Angie's List . However, please take Foundation Expert advice and you be the judge. Take it an extra step and use the reporting systems in place when using servicers of any kind because that's helpful to consumers.
Description of Work: Foundation Expert came to my correct home address and inspection my basement and looked outside of my home, made a few comments and left. I never recieved the written report that I paid for.

Wonder how I received an A for professionalism. She must have hit the wrong key. She obviously hit quite a few wrong keys – the cartoon with Sylvester the Cat and Tweetie the bird comes to mind. It is October 2nd and this member states that we came out on April 23rd? She wasn’t there the first time we showed up. She gave the wrong address the first time around. We get paid for inspections, and we usually will not rebook a missed appointment. We had one customer give us her address in Bogota, Colombia – I wasn’t too happy when I ended up on Bogota Street in Sterling, Virginia. For her, we rescheduled, came back, gave her a written proposal. She also states repeated phone calls. Didn’t happen. All our calls come through a digital system which logs time and duration, with meticulous records of who calls and who does not call. In any case, is this a review you can trust? You be the judge.

Honestly, when I first talked to Sam on the phone, I was a little put off by his being so upfront about everything- his ideas and requests. But when I actually met him and he went through the inspection of the structure, I welcomed his vast knowledge, integrity, and honesty. Unfortunately (Fortunately?) his report sealed the house's fate- I ended up not buying it- Too many structural issues for a newer house. I am glad to have hired him- If I ever have a need, I would do it again in a heartbeat! Thanks!
Description of Work: He reviewed the crawlspace, the ceiling of the cellar (which had mold); the garage; the outside of the garage; the interior structure (the piller holding the second floor was leaning); the upstairs; the outside. I received a report a few days later with estimates to fix.

Wow. What a great review. This is my business model - I work for great reviews. How do you get great reviews? Do great work. Be Honest, ethical, have a genuine concern for the homeowner, not a sales commission, not find ways to take money from hard working people. I ask people to write an honest review and as a result, I have so many requests from Angie's List member that I no longer advertise with Google or other search engines. I truly love doing business with Angie List members because before I show up, they have taken the time to read my reviews and other company reviews. One thing that keeps amazing me is this - FREE ESTIMATES - please, if you think a salesperson is coming out to your home to serve your purposes, to tell you the truth, then you deserve to join the ranks of the members who write negative reviews on these companies after they convince you to spend $5000, $15,000, or even $30,000 for work that doesn't need to be done or that needs doing, but they overcharge and completely under deliver. Here was a member who wanted an honest appraisal of a home before she bought - very smart, actually had an honest real estate agent - very rare these days - and an honest and experienced home inspector - also very very rare both who recommended a Foundation Expert. Normally, they're there to sell a house and earn a commission. In this case, this member must be blessed because everyone she hired had her best interests at heart. I'm there, and I CHARGE FOR INSPECTIONS (almost always) so that there's no conflict of interest. I tell you what needs fixing, what does not need fixing. Then you can have me do the work, or have one of 5 companies that know what they're doing fix it, or about 200 companies that just want to sell you something and may or may not fix your issues, problems. A customer asked me today, "why don't you sell dehumidifiers?" If I tell you to get a dehumidifier and I sell them - hello, conflict of interest - how do you know I'm not trying to just sell you a product and make some money? You don't -which is why I take the product sale, the profit quotient out of the equation. I don't sell dehumidifiers yet I recommend them almost 100% of the time to homeowners. Get a quality dehumidifier. If I don't sell them, can't possibly profit, except by giving you great advice, you have to assume or like most members, know I'm telling you the truth. As my Mother says, "Sammy, your job is to tell them the truth - what they do with the truth is their responsibility" - this comment made to me after I kept getting upset people were contracting with thieves and snakes - which constitutes the majority of companies in waterproofing and foundation repair, and contracting in general. Watch for the future production of my reality show, "Americas Worst Contractors" - I come across them every day. Don't let your American Dream turn into your Worst Nightmare - call The Foundation Expert for a paid inspection and allow us to tell you, show you what is really happening with your foundation, your basement, or any part of your house. Again, thanks to this member for taking the time to reward us with a great review.

He walked around the outside of my house and told me things that I needed to do to clear away from the structure of the house to get the drainage of water away from the house. He saw a small crack on the corner of the garage. He then looked in the basement and told me that there was some mold in one room.He said I needed a dehumidifier for the dampness. He explained to me about the cracks in my cement. He was here about 30-45 minutes. He said he would send me an email with his report. I had to email him about 3 weeks later to get a report.

Sometimes there's no pleasing everyone. I walked around outside - not before I completed an interior inspections, pulling up carpet, examining her sump pump, her stairwell drain, looking at every window and corner. Did she get her structural foundation inspection and report - for sure. Was I late in getting her a report? No. She got her verbal report right then and there and she took notes; plus I walked her around INSIDE and OUTSIDE and told her everything she needed to do to protect her house from structural damage. Did she have mold growing in her son's room which was a disaster area? Yep. Was it because she had a crack in the foundation? Not one that you could see short of tearing down the drywall, which I explained needed to be done. DID I remediate her mold while there at absolutely no charge? Yes - I went and got a mask, she got a plastic bag, I carefully cut out from that corner a small section of drywall that had black mold growing on it and had been there for weeks if not months. Did I get an A for price? You bet - she got about $650 worth of inspection and remediation for $98. Was I 3 weeks in getting her a written report? Yes - sometimes it takes that long when you see 4 people a day, and are booked solid for 5 weeks out. I am busy and unless there is urgency, it takes time for me to write the report. It's 11:30 PM right now and I get up at 3:30AM to start my day. Regardless, I am swamped because people or most people love me and want me, not some liar. The worst thing she had, that most homeowners have is mulch around the foundation. It is a sponge for water and insects. If you think water is bad, wait until the termites, which are attracted to water and breed in mulch eat your sill plate and the wood framing that most houses are constructed of. You think you have siding or brick outside - most times they are fascias. There is wood inside and you need to remove the mulch from around your home and the plants around your home. Professionalism? I guess she doesn't understand the term - I was nothing but professional from when I put on booties in her home, to sitting with her afterwards and giving her a verbal report. Was she a nice woman? I thought she was great, doing a great job with a bunch of children and no man around the house. Did I deserve the C grade she gave me? She obviously thought so. I therefore apologize to this member for disappointing her for $98. I tell people, you don't think it's worth it, don't pay me. Don't insult me with poor grades for $98, $179, $250 - tell me to my face you thought you didn't get what you paid or didn't pay for. Again, she must have thought she got her money's worth - I got an A for price! She left me with the impression I did a great job. My friend said that she liked me a lot - I guess he was mistaken. :( - You win some, you lose some. I win most, but every now and then someone likes to complain - that's Angie's LIst - anyone can say anything - so can I.I like it here.

We were concerned with dampness in our unfinished basement because we would like to do some renovations down there but we need to solve the water problem before moving forward. Sam gave us some good ideas on how to handle the problem. He also found problem areas outside the house where the soil is too high against the house, and where a window well is not dug down deep enough. He also recommended a way to prevent pooling of rain water in some areas of our backyard. Sam was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. The inspection and recommendations he gave were definitely worth the money we paid.
Description of Work: Sam inspected the basement walls, and gave us suggestions on remediation of water seeping up through the floor. He also inspected the outside of the house and gave recommendations on how to prevent water from gaining access to the basement.

Everything went smoothly, from purchasing the Big Deal to scheduling to completion. Sam is professional and personable. Mike, who installed the new pump, was also friendly and knowledgeable. If we ever have any basement or foundation issues in the future, I'll definitely call The Foundation Expert again.
Description of Work: I purchased the Big Deal for an inspection for $99. The Foundation Expert contacted me right away and scheduled my appointment. Sam arrived right on time. I had been concerned about areas around the foundation where the ground seemed to be washing away, plus some moldy areas in the basement storage room. Sam thoroughly inspected the foundation from inside and outside reassured me that what I had noticed was normal settling and nothing to worry about. He made some minor suggestions (fill in a corner under the porch with fill dirt, get a dehumidifier for the storage room) and recommended replacing the broken sump pump ($350) ASAP. He was even able to have an employee come out that day to replace the pump and extend the pump drain away from the house.

He wasn't dependable for his appointment and when he did come, I was not satisfied with his evaluation. He was a friendly guy. He didn't ease my mind and he said he would call me back but then he never got back to me.

Wow. My back went out and we rescheduled our appointment which I showed up for, even though he called up to cancel that. I'm 59 years old, and my health is not what it used to be. I go into crawl spaces and occasionally that is not conducive to my back health. He knew this, accepted a change of appointments. When I did finally see him, my assessment was he needed to clean out his basement, remove all finishes so that I could come back and do a real assessment since all the walls were covered. I also explained that I was going on a sorely needed vacation, that I would write the report when I got back. The first day on vacation, as luck would have it, I got the flu - no vacation, no rest of the weary. I got back last week and haven't had a chance to call him back. I too thought he was an extremely nice guy, actually gave me a cup of coffee, was very hospitable, we talked for over an hour. My apologies to this member. He deserved better, but sometimes as humans we don't perform up to expectations. I'm disappointed I couldn't please him. Do I rate a D? I guess in his mind I do - no work done, but I like A's even when I do free inspections.

First, thanks to this member for praising my inspection services. I work extremely hard to help homeowners. I had been battling this basement flooding for several months. I had received estimates from other companies that were very high and did not address the real problem. I called The Foundation Expert to get an estimate. Sam came to the house within hours. He explained the waterproofing system that he would install. It involved a lot of work: cutting up some of the concrete slab, removing the lower portion of the walls. I figured it would be too expensive. Later that day, I was actually surprised at the estimate. It was very reasonable, and it was much lower than I expected. I authorized Sam to do the work. Sam completed the work 1 day earlier than he promised. The workmanship was great. The waterproofing system is excellent. I hired them to do some additional work in the basement, including putting in new flooring and replacing a window. Overall, the experience was an A+. If you are experiencing water or flooding issues, do not hesitate to call The Foundation Expert. Thanks, Sam!

This member's home is a rental unit in the basement that's experienced water issues and because of that didn't have a current tenant. Nothing complex, but he needed to get this done in a timely manner so he wouldn't lose rental income. When we finished the interior drainage system, he then added a series of carpentry jobs. I'm happy that he is pleased with our work - he was very easy to work with.

We had some minor cracks in our basement, probably some of them caused or magnified by last year's earthquake. We arranged for the inspection just to be sure there were no serious problems. We accompanied Mr Weisgal on his inspection. He took the time to explain everything to us. In fact, there were no serious problems. He gave us options of what we could do about the minor cracks. He did not try to pressure us into buying anything and told us how we could do the repairs ourselves. We were very happy with Mr Weisgal. He is knowledgeable, professional, and honest. If we do have any basement problems in the future, we will be sure to have him do the work.

Thanks again to a member who takes time out of their day to provide an honest review. We do inspections - if someone offers a FREE Estimate, and you truly think it is FREE, then maybe you should learn what is FREE in this world and what is not free. A FREE estimate of what? Their sales commission? We provide an honest, factual inspection at a standard unmatched in the waterproofing, Foundation Repair, Engineering Industry. Our inspections cost us on average approximately $350 per hour in time spent, gas for the vehicle, tools and equipment utilized, and pay charged to our corporation. We don't work for free, we're absolutely sure that you do not work for free. Why would you think someone is offering a free ESTIMATE? On occasion, we will conduct a free inspection - we also do not estimate or offer estimates; once we determine IF YOU NEED SOMETHING FIXED, we send you, VIA email, a proposal like every General Contractor should. Once you accept the proposal, which by the way is not an estimation of charges but an exact detailed breakdown of charges, we then send you a contract. WE DO NOT WALK INTO ANY HOME WITH PAPERWORK TO PRESSURE YOU INTO A QUICK AND HASTY SALES DECISION! As is usually explained - at the end of the inspection if you do not think it is worth the money we charge, don't pay us. We're not here to charge or take your money - we operate to help you fix any issues you're experiencing in the home with an analysis that is acceptable by any Engineer. Maybe, maybe this is why we're the EXCLUSIVE WINNER in Maryland, DC and N. Virginia of the Super Service Award for Foundation Repair. Think about that. Also, of late we've noticed that a few of our competitors in the WATERPROOFING field have over 140 reviews, which we find incredible. Unlike some of these "competitors" we don't write our reviews - Angie List Members do. If you ever feel any of our positive reviews are not real, please challenge us - we have signed contracts or invoices for every one of these reviews - the only reviews which may be dishonest or fraudulent are our negative reviews - 4 which we contend were written by our competitors in an attempt to discredit us. Please forgive these companies which abuse the Angie List system - they know not what they do. Reviews You Can Trust? Maybe you should question that Unique Selling Proposition. Trusting a company with the repair of your foundation should be given serious thought, not something to be quickly decided due to sales pressure at the kitchen table when both spouses are present, something we do not do, nor require - be careful when a company requires both spouses / owners be present for a FREE ESTIMATE. Please, instead of becoming someone's complaint, become one of our wonderful reviews. Our Positive Reviews are reviews you can trust.

STory is above in description of Services.
Description of Work: I contacted Mr. Weisgal due to his outstanding reviews on Angies list. Here's my situaiton. I was upset and in crisis with a flooded basement, wet carpet, walls, in 4 areas. I had just bought the home the month before. I was naturally concerned of the incredible expense that might be involved and i had no idea how we'd ever find out what the issue was. Mr. Weisgal was calming. He was also prompt, knowledgable and was adament to get to the bottom of the cause. During his initial inspection, he was unsure if it was old plumbing or ground water as it had rained a good bit lately but there was also a possibility it was plumbing since I had just purchased the house and that area of the home had not had the pipes stressed at all in recent years since the basement rooms that were flooded were not used by the previous owner. He called in a colleague to get a second opinion and to dig in a bit more to enable discovery of the issue by carefully selecting which walls we dug into. His colleague verified it was a plumbing issue and was able to rule out the ground water possibility. During the same timeframe i had a home warranty company come in to identify the problem. These warranty company required that i use Nate's plumbing who did not listen to Sam's folks and instead within 60 seconds claimed i had pipes under the floor busted. Nate's plumbing asked if he could provide me with an estimate for tearing up my entire basement floor. I was shocked how unprofessional Nate's plumbing was and aghast they were ready to tear up my basement floor to diagnos a problem that didn't exist. I sent them away. The bottom line is that we located the issue which was old galvonized piping that was leading and we were able to remediate the issue with a few days of dehumidifiers and contracted work to replace the soaked wall, warped cabinets, and carpet pads. The plumbing issue was of course located and corrected. We have been dry and back to normal for 2 weeks. From the foundation expert i received first class service, thorough identification of the real issue before any money was commited and before I made a commitment to use Mr. Weisgal's contracting services to address the issue. There was no pressure ever. In fact i wanted to go with his services because i trusted him to be fair, competent, and to explain to me what he was doing to 100% address my real problem. We are confident we did not need ground water or foundation expertise to solve the problem. That could have been extremely expensive and unnecessary. It just makes sense that an expert would be able to assure you whether you needed it or not. Mr. Weisgal's team has the right experts. Mr. Weisgal was professional, competent, and I trusted him to get the right work done and done right. I'd recommend him to anyone that asks. Jean

This member had just purchased her home in Takoma Park, an area famous for residential structural issues and water problems. It had just rained hard - one of the few we had in the spring, and the member was at work - she's a Colonel in the Air Force. When I arrived, the place was flooded so I immediately started to get the carpet up, the padding out, turn the air conditioning to the coldest setting, and get the water shop-vacced so as to prevent mold growth. I wasn't getting paid to do this, but there was no time to waste or wait for a remediation company. With the doors and windows open, the saturated condition, the home was primed for a mushroom farm to destroy the interior finish of the home. Mold needs moisture, organic or cellulose material, and an ambient temperature to sprout. Temperatures below 67 degrees should halt mold growth. Next, while we were shop-vaccing the interior, I went outside for an exterior inspection and was a little confused as to why foundation or ground water would be entering the home. The front apartment where the water was entering was slightly below grade, and although the previous owners had taken precautions and work had been done indicative of previous water issues, to me it didn't make sense - water doesn't just go anywhere, it travels the path of least resistance. Regardless, in this instance, and often times, my first step is to rule out plumbing issues. We had a crew come in the next day and start to dismantle the walls which were already wet and needed to be removed to prevent the growth of mold. It took an entire day with two of my guys, but eventually - we found multiple plumbing leaks from old pipes. I told the Colonel that in my opinion, the insurance should pay for the damage. You want the truth? Pay my inspection fee and you'll get an honest assessment of water and foundation issues. You want to be duped? Go for the FREE ESTIMATES that these so called "waterproofers" will offer. Just today I went into a $3,000,000 home in Foxhall Crescent - Aquaguard had been in the home before me - check them out on the BBB - only about 40 complaints - that's hard to do - file a complaint with the BBB when the contractor is paying an annual membership fee to not get complaints - no conflict of interest there? In any case, Aquaguard's salesperson recommended an interior drain system - probably around $12,000 with the damage they would do and not put back after they tear up the floor to install a drainage system - not waterproofing which they all call it - its' a drainage system - it is water management, not waterproofing. It took me all of 2 minutes to determine without any doubt it was a plumbing issue. Bottom line, pay me to inspect - if you don't think it was worth it at the end of the inspection, don't pay me. I'm not there for your money. I'm looking to help you find out the cause of your problem, and fix it if I have the capability, or refer you to a professional that does. Like the Colonel here, you can become one of my 'rave' reviews, or one of the other company's costly complaints. You choose. As my mom told me once, Sammy, your job is to tell them the truth - what they do with it is their choice.

I had some water intrusion through the base of my concrete slab in an add-on section of my house. The water wasn't much but it was distributive to my roommate. So I called around and these guys were the cheapest and Sam, who came out did the estimate, seems to be very knowledgeable and you can tell he has some experience under his belt. They started the job on-time with a team of very organized and proficient crews. I have to say Sam went out his ways to ensure I was satisfied with the work performed. He offered extra help that was beyond the initial quote. Overall I am very satisfied that I went with them and highly recommended.

This member got lucky. New home buyer, bought a home with an addition that had no foundation. No footing. If you don't know what you're dealing with, as a contractor you could destroy the home installing a drainage system inappropriate to the job at hand. This member from overseas, was inclined to go with the cheapest price - I felt compassion, and lowered my price, doing the carpentry putback at cost. Labor + materials. Don't often do this, but I liked this member and he didn't have a lot of funds to repair something that he was totally unprepared financially to fix. Not often am I the least expensive - in fact, I think I should be the most expensive - sometimes I am, sometimes I am not. I price the fix, not the customer. To me it doesn't matter whether you can afford the work or not - My responsibility is to diagnose the problem and prescribe the correct approach or method to fix or cure the problem. Affordability usually isn't something I factor in. If you want to become one of my great reviews, please call us. If you want to become someone's complaint, you have plenty to choose from - like Angie says, " Waterproofers are like wild flowers that grow on the side of the road. There's a bunch!" I'm a Foundation Repair Expert.

This is a long overdue review. My wife and I were set to close on a house in September 2011, just a few weeks after the hurricane swept through the region. The sellers had told us they did not experience any flooding but the day before the closing (during the walk through) we found out the truth. A section of the basement had flooded and the carpet was still wet (and had been for 2+ weeks). In a panic I tried calling a number of basement experts to get an estimate but of course, everyone was booked solid. Sam was one of two providers who can to give a ballpark estimate on a Sunday night at 7 pm (6 hours after we discovered the problem). Based on his ballpark estimate, we were able to negotiate a credit. His estimate turned out to be about the actual cost of the job which was great news. Sam and his team came a couple weeks later to do the job and everything turned out great. I could not recommend his services more.
Description of Work: Sealed a crack in our basement foundation both from the outside and inside. Sam's team was fast and efficient. Sam was a pleasure to work with.

Thanks. This is what I work towards - praise and confirmation that I'm helping people as opposed to many contractors who are focused on selling something that isn't necessary. They're actually about 10 minutes from where I live - please do not get the idea that I come out at 7PM on Sunday evenings - actually this is a Sunday Evening and I'm working as usual. They were about to close on a home - one of my goals is to help people who are purchasing a home understand issues before they buy. I've probably saved homeowners this year to date about $1,500,000 in repairs they did not need or houses they should or should not purchase. Just yesterday, 08.04.2012 I inspected a home and was pleasantly surprised by an inspector AND a waterproofer - both did a great diagnosis - and I just confirmed what they said - happens every blue moon (that's when you have 2 full moons in one month :) If you're looking for an honest, no nonsense, no punches pulled inspection of your foundation, give me a call. Just remember I charge - if you don't think it was worth it, don't pay me.

Sam was very professional, polite and appeared to have a sincere passion in helping people to not get ripped off.
Description of Work: I was just browsing through Angie's List "Deals and Buy Now" when I saw that The Foundation Expert was offering a foundation inspection including a written report for $98.00. I immediately bought it because it seemed like a huge deal to me. I had been a bit concerned for a couple of years that our house on Capitol Hill was settling because one corner in our second floor bedroom seemed to be drooping downward. When Sam (Samual Weisgal), founder of the company, inspected our foundation and second floor bedroom, he gave us the happy news that we had nothing to worry about. This is what we learned: 1. That corner of the house has settled not more than 11/2 to 2 inches - nothing to be concerned about.2. We can make the drooping corner of the bedroom look better by simply putting in a hard putty and painting over it.3. Since we are a row house with common walls ajoined by two three story houses on each side, we will probably never have a foundation problem!4. Most of the time it's the wife who calls their company for a foundation inspection. Husbands are not that concerned, as was my husband. Sam said that he gives a lot of wives "peace of mind." I certainly felt a huge relief when he said that! He also said that he just came from another inspection where he also gave that wife "peace of mind." It was interesting to learn that he does these inspections not necessarily to get more business, but to try to save people from rip-off contractors. I really believed his sincerity from talking to him for quite a while. I also looked at his website at their licenses, certifications, awards, testimonials, Core Values and Vision Statement of "Zero Tolerance for Complaints and turning every customer into a reference." There is absolutely not doublt that Sam will be the first person we call if we need any type of structural services! By the way, I told him that he didn't have to write a report. :)

First, thanks for the great review. This validates what we're achieving - righting the ship. It's enough that our politicians rip us off, contractors are close to home, literally. If you study the waterproofing and foundation repair industry like I do, you'll find that most of the companies have horrible reviews and tons of complaints. Are there good companies? Sure - good luck finding them. I know who they are and I can only name about 3 that I would allow to work on my home, or even meet my mother. Most are sales organizations that wouldn't understand engineering - it takes 2 weeks to become a General Contractor - it takes 8 years to become an engineer. We do inspections with honest assessments. We fix problems and we are capable of doing any residential job or project. As for other companies writing false reviews, I know this for a fact since I know about 60 people that work for about 10 different companies, and they've told us about the sales meetings where each salesperson has to write false reviews. On the other hand, I challenge all my customers - find a review or 50 of my reviews - I'll show you the contracts, the before and after shots, and if that isn't enough, I'll let you speak to my customers - they already love me and are references. Now I have this Chaplain for a reference, who also happens to be a wonderful person. I treat everyone like I would treat my mother - respectfully, honestly, and ethically. I assess every home as if it were mine. But don't take my word - read my reviews! By the way, at this juncture, The Foundation Expert is the EXCLUSIVE winner of the Angie's List Super Service Award for Foundation Repair in Maryland, DC and N.Virginia. Look me up under Foundation Repair and ask yourself, how come the other 182 didn't also win?

After the earthquake, I purchased a big deal for a foundation inspection for ease of mind. The company showed up on time, walked through the house looking at different cracks in the interior walls and inspected the inside and outside walls for water leaks and cracks. In general conversation, I discussed future remodeling I am planning and we discussed potential options. I received a written report on the structural integrity of my foundation. Individual was friendly, professional, arrived on time. If I was to develop problems, I would contact this company.

We love reviews like this because they reflect what we do as opposed to other companies. Most other companies in this industry employ salespeople, not professional inspectors or people like me who actually do the work, know what works, what does not, what needs fixing and in this case, what does not warrant work at this time. In this instance, we recommended doing nothing except to superficially fill the cracks - an easy DIY project that would take about 2 hours, and wait - monitor and observe and every few months-see if the crack expands. All to often I come into a home where the homeowner has an "ESTIMATE" for $5000-$50,000 for work that in our opinion doesn't need doing. I am acknowledged in courts as an expert witness. My inspections and reports are accepted by courts factual documentation. We operate under the supervision and direction of Professional Engineers. To become a contractor takes about 2 weeks. To become an Engineer takes 8 years. And you can't come into a home and tell people that they need work when they don't. Well, I guess you can because there's a whole slew of companies on Angie's List that will do exactly that. 30% of my work is fixing what others were paid to fix and did not. Another 30% is coming into homes that are new - 2-15 years that were constructed improperly even though they cost $850,000-$3,000,000 to purchase. 20% of my work is on old homes newly purchased by homeowners who thought their inspector was honest or knew anything about foundations. 99% don't - it only takes 4 months to become an Inspector. No experience necessary. In fact there are licensed and franchised operations out there like B-Dry, Basement Systems, Basement Technologies, JES, Everdry, and the list goes on where YOU, yes YOU can become a Basement Waterproofing / Foundation Repair company - that takes about $75,000-$150,000 and two weeks training. As their brochure will state, "No Experience Necessary" but sales and business management experience is helpful. If that is what you truly want, a sales company, take your pick - they're a dime a dozen here in the Mecca of Waterproofing - thats why companies such as Mid-Atlantic can gross $40,000,000 a year, but have 100-200 complaints. If you want it done correctly, call us or call Apex Waterproofing - they also know what they're doing. A few others do, but I don't know who they may be. Maybe this is why I am the EXCLUSIVE WINNER of the Super Service award for Foundation Repair. Again, thanks to this member for a great review.

The foundation experts came by to examine a sinking cement slab in our front bedroom. They were prompt and courteous. They performed a detailed evaluation of the problem and indicated that we were really in a wait and see situation. There was no need to have the work done immediately, although that was an option if we wanted. They suggested that we monitor the problem and contact them if it got worse. This was music to our ears. These guys seem honest and competent. A combination of qualities I found lacking in other foundation repair companies

First, we like to thank this member for a great review. Please do not get the wrong idea though when she states "No" for services performed. We performed a foundation inspection - this is one of our major services. We normally charge - and we don't do free estimates - we EXACTIMATE. We leave the FREE estimates to the salesperson you're going to get. We're company owners - you won't get a salesperson, you won't get any pressure to accept anything, you don't have to have both spouses present - in fact, that is normally a question we don't ask. Is it helpful if both homeowners are present? Yes. Is it mandatory? Not with us. We also don't do evening inspections - we actually need the light of day to inspect your exterior. Also, If you live in Bethesda, I usually do not charge because you're my neighbor and its usually a 10 minute drive anywhere in this area. I don't charge for inspections for referrals. I do FREE phone consultations - I can usually determine what i going on through a conversation. .

basement waterproofing

It's hard for me to know how to grade this company fairly. My basement flooded in early June during a very heavy rain. Sam came to my house to give me an estimate, a day or two after I called his company. He was obviously very knowledgeable and helpful -- pointed out why the "waterproofing" work done by a previous contractor was faulty, explained how French drains work and how my basement walls were constructed, inspected my sump pump, and more. He was quite chatty and I enjoyed talking with him. He told me it was essential to get the wet carpeting out immediately, and arranged for a crew to come that very afternoon. He apologized for the high price, but said it was because the men had to scramble to get there. The crew arrived when promised and removed the carpeting. Because our town has strict rules about when trash may be placed on the street, the crew came back two days later, at no additional charge, to haul the soaked and heavy carpet to the curb for trash pick up -- something I very much appreciated. The "A" I gave the company for "quality" was because of this gesture. About the basement waterproofing/foundation repair, Sam told me he thought my foundation needed some serious work, and promised to e-mail an estimate. I never heard from him again. Since Sam had given me the impression that his work would be costly, I didn't follow up with him, and hired another contractor instead. I'm frankly not sure if I would use The Foundation Expert again, given Sam's failure to send the estimate. I was disappointed, because I liked him personally very much.
Description of Work: After a flood, removed wet carpeting and inspected my basement and foundation for needed repair. Did not provide estimate.

$450

Response from The Foundation Expert
First, I appreciate the praise. And although I truly enjoyed meeting this member, I did not send an estimate. Sometimes I choose not to send estimates for jobs or projects I may not want. I just haven’t figured out a politically correct way to tell people that on second thought, we don’t want the project. In this instance, the member’s house flooded and two days later, when I arrived, no one had removed any of the carpet or carpet pad; it was warm out, her windows were open, and a mold farm was starting to brew. I’m not going to comment on the overall state of the home. The system installed previously wasn’t functioning as it should; in fact, in my opinion, there was extensive work needed. Regardless, what she needed right then was emergency service and I offered to send one of my crews over – for an emergency removal of her carpet – carpet that weighs a ton because it is soaking wet and no one has shop vacced or removed any of the debris that was down there. Instead of charging her an Inspection Fee of $250, I charged her $450 (MY COST) to remove her carpet, and then come back another day and haul the 20 trash bags to the street. I didn’t make a penny on that job, yet her comment above is that we are overpriced. I don’t know what this member thinks is the going rate for hard labor but it is not cheap. I probably prevented her from having to spend $8,000 in mold remediation costs. This is why this member did not receive an estimate. I don’t work for free. I don’t do free estimates, I also charge for inspections, and I contract with those individuals who I think will actually appreciate excellence. I think this member would, but it would have been cost prohibitive if she thought $450 was expensive. My prices are fair or better than fair. I do excellent work at prices that are competitive with other companies in my industry that have dozens of complaints; pricing that is reflective of the experience and quality of the work we do. Please read my favorable reviews. Any other company like mine with licenses, insurance, and overhead would have charged $800 because that is the going rate. In any case, I am happy she was at least happy with the work quality.
