Two technicians came and both were extremely friendly and professional. Their inspection was thorough and the resulting report very detailed. I was very satisfied with the service and would definitely recommend them for anyone requiring foundation/crawl space work.

I have foundation cracks in my basement and was concerned about a carport slab that is sinking. I already had three other bids from contractors with three different approaches to solve this problem. Each contractor spent considerable time with me and delivered a report and a bid. The Foundation Expert provided considerable time with me and delivered a report and a bid. Because it was a "Big Deal," my expectations were considerably higher in the report that I would receive as the result of the inspection would be a lot more detailed. In fact, it turned out to be just another bid. I did appreciate the fact that the contractor had a concrete man come out later in the day to look at my driveway and it did help me to think through the scope of the work that I need done. A more extensive detailed report may have provided me with the confidence to go ahead with the work with this contractor.

Sam inspected the inside and outside of my basement as well as the retaining wall very carefully. He was very professional and spent the time to answer all my questions as he performed the inspection. I received a written report by email for my records very shortly after the inspection date.

Based upon favorable reviews, The Foundation Expert was my first choice so I called to schedule an appointment. I called the company at 7:00 am on a Friday and gave my name, phone number, alternate phone number, and email address. I was told that someone would be in touch soon to schedule a time to come out. Because I was nervous about the extent of potential damage, I called the company again around 2:00 to see if they knew how long it would take to have someone call me back. The person I spoke to could not give me that information but took down my name, phone number, alternate phone number and email address and said someone would call me back. It's almost a week later and no one has ever called me back. Given that the company has never returned my calls--although they claim to have a 24-hour emergency service--I went with another, more responsive company.
Description of Work: My house suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy and I needed to have someone come out and take a look at cracks that had formed in the foundation as well within the interior of the home.

Every now and then a member has nothing better to do with their life than complain. We were having a hurricane, which some were labeling our worst storm 'ever' and this member wonders why I didn't call back. I didn't call back approximately 143 people. Complaining will definitely not expedite.

Over all I thought it was a good deal to have an expert review the situation
Description of Work: We had a cracks in the outside bricks and wanted to know if we needed any foundation work...He did recommend some reinforcing work but that it wasn't an immediate have to do as there was no structural support needed for the house...this is on a cemet slab on our screen porch....I did not get a written report though and would have liked to have gotten one.

You have to wonder sometimes why people write reviews. Here, this member talks about the inspection and that no report was received. Two months later she complains - I keep digital records of everything. We don't hand write reports, we compose them digitally, and then we email them, another digital format. Instead of calling or emailing stating you didn't get your report this member decided to complain first, although she received a report and proposal 57 days before this complaint complaining about not received a report. So, again a review written with a false claim, to achieve what aim? If you as a member would rather complain to Angie's List than call up the contractor, please do not use my services. Some of my customers may think I am, but we're very far from perfect. With Hurricane Sandy, just in the first 3 days we received over 150 requests for service - I apologize - we are not big enough to handle that volume of calls. I'm sure I'll have a complaint about someone stating I have not returned calls. I've missed over 100 calls so far. But please, before you complain, try to make sure you're making a valid complaint - its hard enough dealing with people who have a perceived complaint - taking time to deal with people who have received their report and state they haven't - this is the second time this week. The first already wrote a review about how great our work was, but didn't receive a report - which again is ridiculous - we just finished his project - he got a report, proposal, contract, and final balance request and then said how great were were, and then called Angie's List and complained that he didn't get a report. That complaint was removed by the customer.

Our home is OK, he gave some tips on sloping the dirt away from the foundation My Mother's home, on the other hand, is in very poor condition. He gave a minimum figure that he expected repairs would cost. Shocking, but not too surprising I am very grateful for the information.

He came out, and was very professional from the get go. The executive vice president was the one who came out, looked around, and gave us an estimate. We decided to contract with them. He came back and introduced us to the person who was going to be doing the work. He then came back as the workman was finishing. It was just excellent. He went around and he checked it out personally. He said there was one part of the exterior that was a little rough, but it wasn't part of the original estimate. It needed to be sanded down and painted and he offered to take care of it then and there for no additional fee. We'd hire them again and again without reservation. We would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: We have pillars on the outside porch, and the wood had rotted over time. They needed to take the old pillars off and install new pillars. Then, we have 2 large bay windows (one on balcony and one adjacent to the living room), and the wood underneath had rotted there as well. They had to rebuild it, sand it down, and repaint it.

They did a good job with the main job. The main job went well, but I did not have a very good vision of what "done" would mean when they left. We had a mix-up and I got their outside contract not the inside contract, so the fine print was not complete for the work. They said the job would take three days, and they completed it in two (I was not home on day two). I found out that they planned to come back after a week when the cement had dried to reset the toilet and other appliances. I had planned an event for that weekend, and the appliances were not connected, so they sent a special team and got it all done on Saturday morning before my guests arrived. Anything in the 18" perimeter had to be removed or cut out, including the wooden walls of a small bathroom, which I have yet to repair completely. The owner was very good about offering to make everything right. While they said they would look into other minor work that I requested, they ended up being too busy to do it. Read the contract carefully to understand how your basement will be left when they are done, especially if there are structures or appliances to be moved. Be on site when they locate the sump pumps and exit pipes to make sure they are where you want them. I got an estimate from another prominent local provider in 2003, and it was for about 50% more than I paid in June 2012.
Description of Work: Provided waterproofing/water management solution for my basement. Bottom-line result: my basement was completely dry after Sandy dumped ~10" of water in my yard. Dug out trench 18" all around interior perimeter of basement floor, about 18" deep, including large and small room. Filled in gravel and french drain pipes all around perimeter. Added plastic waffle liner around perimeter. Installed an automatic electric sump pump in each room with PCV pipes to route water to outside drains. Filled in all trenches with cement and smoothed floor. Returned washing machine, cellar sink, and toilet to place with plumbing of connections.

I used the Angie's List big deal to get an inspection and recommendation of my crawl space because I was concerned about leaks and excess moisture. I did some of my own research and spent a few weeks working with Sam, the owner, to make sure I understood exactly what was needed and what I would get with his company. It was slow getting the work scheduled because they were very busy. Work was started on a Monday and they were done by Thursday a full day ahead of schedule. I then had the furnace company come in and inspect the furnace since it is located in the crawl space. The furnace company noticed that the Icynene spray had been used on the vent pipe and they were concerned about possible fire. I called Sam immediately and they sent someone out to clean the pipe. Since I had the work done Hurricane Sandy dumped 6 inches of rain and there is no water or moisture in the crawl space.
Description of Work: Installed an interior weeping system, new sump pump, encapsulated the walls with Icynene insulation and installed moisture and radon barrier over a new gravel subfloor in the crawl space.

If you would like a Saturday appointment time, do be prepared to be patient or flexible. I had a few weeks wait for the appointment, because I had to reschedule the first one, but it was worth the wait.
Description of Work: I am a single woman, who is learning about homeownership. I have lived in my single family home for 12 years, and have experienced water in the basement, squeaky wood floors and cracked concrete in my garage. I needed to have someone honestly tell me what work was most important to have done in my home, and give me some pointers for going forward. Mr. Weisgal was prompt for the appointment and was professional and pretty thorough in address the troublesome areas of my home that I asked questions about. Do be prepared to take notes! The two problems that he pointed out as needing to be addressed sooner, the mildrewy rug and padding in the basement and the cracked concrete stoop, I have addressed. He also pointed out some grading issues in my yard that may have added to the leaks in the basement. What I appreciated the most was having a professional give his opinion on work that needed to be done, with explanations and details that I, the lay person, could understand abd without trying to make a sales pitch for his services. I would definitely recommend Mr. Weisgal to my friends and family.

Very professional. He said I didn't need to build up the foundation. He said I simply needed to patch the brickwork. Apparently being an engineer, he looked more accurately and saved me money. We fixed the brickwork and patched it up. That seems to have fixed the problem at its root. A foundation repair would have cost thousands of dollars and not even fixed things. He then suggested how to better drain the water away from the house. He also looked into crawl space and identified the leak as coming from the washing machine above, which we surmised. This too fixed the problem. Good services!
Description of Work: He reviewed a recommendation that I was given by a handyman to rebuild the foundation and fix the brickwork and also checked the crawl space to see what was needed to address a water spot.

The inspector arrived on time and was very courteous. He checked everything inside the house thoroughly, but when it came to determining whether the water in my basement was coming from outside, he didn't bring all of the tools necessary to make his assessment. He asked if I had a hose he could borrow to see if water would come through where he thought there might be a crack. I actually didn't have a hose, so there was no way for him to verify if it was actually a crack or just some messy looking mortar between the bricks. The inspector told me I should go to buy a hose after he left and check myself to see if any water would come through the 'crack' into the basement. If it did, then I should call him back and he could do an official estimate to repair it. I gave it a try, but no water came through. So, I guess there isn't a crack, but I shouldn't have to guess...that's why I hired an inspector, right?

She's right - I should have a hose. Unfortunately, this was the first house I've been to that did not have a hose, and the last hose i had in the back of my truck was stolen in downtown, D.C -- welcome to the Nation's Capitol. Can't put a hose inside the vehicle, water will drain everywhere; a hose is one of the few tools that you rarely ever carry with you as most homes have hoses to water their lawn or plants. But, I didn't charge her for the inspection either.

All companies that interface with customers should be compared to The Foundation Expert as the gold standard. We had a pretty severe leak in the corner of our basement. Whenever it would rain, water would just pour in. I called around the beginning of October and set an appointment with Sam for 1000 at 10/22. He arrived 15 minutes early. Having just dealt with Comcast - this was absolutely appreciated. We started outside and I explained what the issue was. Right away he noticed a few things the contractor who originally installed our external drainage system did improperly. He also point out a few things that I could correct myself such as digging out and installing a window well for a basement window which had none. We then transitioned inside to the basement. Out of the three companies we had come look at the issue, Sam was the only person to get up on the knee wall in the basement, contort his body and inspect things. In addition to inspecting the area of the leak, he noted a gap between the sill plate of the house and the foundation in some spots. He could see the external siding and daylight. I climbed up for a look and sure enough he was right. He tested the cement/mortar to see how far left and right of the corner the water was penetrating and made some suggestions on how he would attempt to resolve the issue. He then inspected the rest of the basement and immediately pointed out the incorrect installation of the weeping tile for our french drain that was installed by the contractor who built the house. It was weeping tile with fabric that should be used on the outside of a home drainage system - not inside. To make matters worse, it was installed backwards. He made a few more observations and I tried to take the best mental notes I could. Sam?s business philosophy is that he doesn?t come out to your house to give you an estimate. There are pros and cons to this that I won?t debate here. Some people may be turned off by this. His model is to offer a thorough inspection and suggest ways to resolve the problem. He did a more detailed inspection than any of the other companies. Any reservation I had about paying for an inspection thinking it was just a scam melted away after a few minutes in to the process. He flat out knows his stuff. I would recommend him to anyone reading this. When it came to price, I braced myself for a high dollar amount. Because Sam demonstrated expert knowledge beyond any of his competitors I thought he was going to be expensive. In fact, he price was right in the middle of the other quotes we received for the exact same type of work. Then came hurricane Sandy... Sam originally put us on the books to come out right during the peak of when Sandy was supposed to hit. It wasn?t his fault. At the time we scheduled things hurricane Sandy wasn?t really on anyone?s radar yet. When it became obvious that she was going to hit the eastern seaboard hard and dump a lot of rain I begged Sam, with 48 hours notice, to see if there was a way to come out this weekend ahead of the storm. I feared our basement was going to be under two feet of water if he didn?t. He shuffled some things around and was able to send a crew out on 10/27. His crew was awesome. Eddie was fantastic. He walked me through the process. Explained everything they were going to do. He even gave me advice and tips on the window well I was installing while they were doing their thing with the foundation repair. Fantastic inspection. Fantastic people. Fantastic crew. Fantastic company. This is truly the only company I would ever rate as A+ if I could. Totally worth every penny.
Description of Work: To seal and stop a leak they excavated a corner of my homes foundation. Applied parging where needed, liquid rubber, some sort of insulation barrier thing, then backfilled.

Wow! thank you so much for a great review. This is work we perform almost daily - it's called waterproofing - going outside and fixing the problem, not selling some Interior Drainage System which would have done nothing. Sometimes you need an interior drainage system - its called water management, not waterproofing like so many companies want you to believe - why? Because they sell 'cookie cutter' systems. Some are franchise or licensed operations and the owners and salepeople only know Free Estimates and Hard Pressure Kitchen Table Closes. Presentations on Power Point. They don't do real waterproofing; they do not excavate, waterproof the wall, redo the parging, spend money on expensive rubber, then place protection on top of the rubber, then backfill properly, all the while working around utility cables. There is a tremendous liability when you excavate. We'd like to again thank this member for going out of his way, and writing such a detailed report. Getting a review like this makes it all worth while.

A visit from Sam, several emails, and a call or two arranged what work was to be done. The work itself took two days. The first morning was a bit disorganized, but the crew seemed good natured about it, and once things got started it went great. Kenny (the project manager) was happy to answer questions. When the work was done, Sam called to make sure we were satisfied with the results. And we are very satisfied with both the work and how it was done. The crew was polite, they cleaned up after themselves each day, and despite all the dirt and dust they didn't track any inside. A fence they had to work around was put back together correctly, and they rolled a hose they used back up on the wheel. It sounds minor, but it is so NICE to not have to go putting things back and cleaning after people have worked on your home!
Description of Work: Ground on the side of the house was re-graded to lower the level of the soil against the foundation, and to slope the ground properly so that water would run away from the foundation. A sub-soil drainage system was installed along with a dry well to carry away and prevent standing water. Grading in the back yard was lowered by the patio to allow water to drain off onto lawn. Mortar joints on the sides of the house were cleaned and repaired, and the block foundation had new parging applied.

Thank you for a great, HONEST review. My business model is generating Great Honest Reviews - to do so, we have to perform excellent work usually about 8-10 times before we get such a review so we're always grateful to member(s) who call first if they have a complaint, and if not, who then post positive and honest comments. This is extremely difficult work - not only to diagnose correctly, but to then execute in the manner expected of us. I inspect about 100 homes each month - it is not easy - and I do so to help the homeowner. I don't do it for money, I do it because its a service that needs doing. There are too many unscrupulous companies and individuals who state they are 'waterproofers' whose only intention is to sell something, needed or not. I make an effort to provide the best service possible in Foundation Repair - again, the greatest reward we receive is the praise from homeowners when we perform to and above expectations.

I had been having moisture problems with an interior wall for over a year and had asked a roofer and mason to review the problem. I bought a $98 coupon for a review of my foundationa and The Foundation Expert came by to see the issue and assured me that the problem was not from my foundation. They also gave me suggestions on other possibilities to look into. I finally found out that it was due a leaky sky light of a neighboring row house.

Great review - Why? Because she is basically telling you I am honest. I don't come to your home looking to sell you something, I come looking for the proper and correct approach to fixing whatever may be wrong with your foundation and home. Often - you can read over a dozen reviews - I find plumbing problems, or above grade problems that truly have nothing to do with your foundation, although they do have water or moisture issues. Often, I have come behind some of these companies you find on Angie's List that quote $30,000 to fix a problem (helical piers is one of their sales gimmicks) and I come to inspect and find absolutely nothing to fix. You want a free estimate? Than you'll get what you pay for - a free sales pitch. You want an honest assessment of your foundation, or issues you're having, then simply pay my inspection fee - currently a discounted fee of $179 to Angie's List Members. If you don't think you got $179 worth, please... just don't pay me. If you can't afford my fix, please don't complain - start saving your money so you can get it fixed. Again, thanks to this member for a review you can trust.

Again, a negative, inaccurate review from a member who had no work done. We do our best to give the greatest service and experience in foundation inspection and repair. Here is a member who has given us C grades for Price and Quality when she hasn't purchased anything, couldn't possibly know when she gets a great price or not. What could she possibly compare it to? They needed work, decided their foundation wasn't worth fixing - the most important component of your home is your foundation. You have water coming in and you decide to go 'cheap' - which it never is - you might as well give the money to a homeless person or a charity. Gives me C for quality - quality of what? They never purchased or received anything - no service or product - the member states, "they were too expensive and too extensive." Too extensive? Thats like going in for surgery to remove a tumor and you tell the Doctor, hey, I want something cheap - how about only removing a portion of the tumor, nothing extensive please. No guarantee of working? We warrant everything - We don't guarantee anything except that the inspection will be worth more than you pay us. WE WARRANTY EVERY PRODUCT AND SERVICE - and give great warranties, except you'll probably never use them because we do extensive work and we do it correctly the first time. We don't waterproof half a wall because you can't afford it - I often tell homeowners that I do not care how much money they have - this is the work that is needed and I am not willing to compromise - please get another company that is willing to sell you something. I am here to fix your problem, not cater to your budget. You want to do something less extensive? Please, call one of the sales companies that will only fix half your foundation. Is this a review you can trust? Absolutely not. I believe this is a completely dishonest review and was posted for spite because they didn't want to spend the money and I was not willing to compromise. I give a price, its set in stone - no discounts because my margins are already tight. I'm fortunate if I net 20% - I keep wondering how these other companies are able to give 10%, 15% discounts - read their coupons - they're just like all the other companies who jack up their prices so they can fool people into believing they're getting a bargain. I give honest prices for great work. Please, read my honest reviews - the reviews you can trust.

The inspection went very well. He answered all my questions, confirmed my repairs, and did an overall great job.
Description of Work: Samuel Weisgal, Chief Inspector for The Foundation Expert inspected my home's foundation and crawl space. He also reviewed the foundation's grading for water drainage. I had previously made various repairs and drainage work which he found to be very appropriate. He found "the home to be in extraordinary condition for a home of this age". He found no issues that needed attention.

Thank you. An honest review. This is all I ask - be honest when you give me grades or reviews. Please don't let spite come into play. Also, if you're a complainer, please call one of the other companies. I'm not here to make you feel good - most times you get very bad news from me because your foundation needs to be fixed and it usually costs a lot of money. Sometimes, I give good news, but most people don't pay me to conduct an inspection because they're home is in great shape. Sometimes they want peace of mind - sometimes that is what you will receive. More often though, I'm there to give you the truth - if you can't handle it, that is not my issue, it is yours. You want an honest person who doesn't need the money or care about your financial situation but is passionate about fixing your home correctly, or cares about giving you an honest diagnosis, that's me. I don't pull punches, I am not at your home to make you feel good. I'm there to tell it like it is. Short, but not often sweet. Again, thanks to this member for an honest review for an honest inspection.

I had scheduled a day for them to come out to inspect the foundation. When the day came that they were suppose to be out he wasn't able to make it and instead sent his brother. I mentioned to the guy that came that the appointment coud be rescheduled but he insisted that he could do the inspection. I asked the man that came out if I should be writing down the work that needs to be done, but he told me that they would send me an estimate listing all the work that was necessary and the cost of having the work completed. I never received the estimate, so I called them about it. They have not returned my call and I did not get the written estimate I was promised. I also was not given a receipt for proof of services performed.
Description of Work: They came out to do an inspection on my home to see why water was coming into my basement.

Our apologies to this member. Some people just love to complain, but in this case, we were remiss in sending a report and for that we humbly ask forgiveness. I'm a victim of my own success with Angie's List. We get 5-8 calls every day asking for a paid inspection and I alone can barely run 3-4 because we do not employ sales people - we refuse to go that route. This has been going on since January when we won 4 super service awards. After roughly 1000 inspections in that time - yes, more than 1000, my back has been giving me grief for months now - too many crawl spaces and I am going to be 60 in March. Not an excuse, just a statement of fact. So we did deserve a poor review (called my brother today and he says, "oops, forgot to send the report.") We're not perfect. However, no one can recall getting a call from her. My phone is a direct line to me, it is advertised on our Angies webpage. If you call me, you will get me or my voice mail and I will call you back.

Everything went very well. He was prompt and gave us very good information on what repairs are necessary for our house. We have taken his advice.
Description of Work: Sam gave us a written estimate for all the repairs that should be taken care of . We did not require his specific services.

Thanks for an honest review, one you can trust. These members had some water problems that were being caused by above grade issues and had some roofing problems. Their foundation was in excellent condition, especially for an older home. I do appreciate the fact they took the time to give me good grades though.
