I can tell you in the 30 years we have owned this house we have never had such a wonderful competent contractor. Rick (the owner) came out when we called last December 2018, gave us a very fair estimate. We hired his company and to tell the honest truth we have never had such a professional owner and employees working at our home. They showed up on time, texted before they were going to arrive. Went right to work and did a fantastic job and cleaned up so well you would never know they were there!!! This company is so good that we just hired them again (July2019) to put two new designer sliders in. When you text or call Rick you get a call or text right back if you have any questions. We are actually looking for more things for this company to replace. We highly recommend this company and you won't be disappointed. Their work is superior.

If you're looking for your windows to be replaced, I highly recommend Tom Hanger Home Improvement. We first started working with them (mostly Rick) six years ago, when we had them replace all of the windows on our town home. The windows have held up great over that time. Rick met with us initially, and was involved throughout the entire process, including personal trips to ensure the work was done well and to answer any questions we had. We called him this past week, six years later, because we noticed some water around one of our windows. It ended up being a siding installation issue that was totally unrelated to the window work we had done. Nevertheless, Rick personally drove out 24 hours after we called, diagnosed the issue, and resolved it without seeking payment. It's clear that they take ownership in the work that they do.

Tom Hanger Home Improvement did an exemplary job. Attention to detail, professional attitude and honest. Rick Hylton, the owner, met with me a couple of times to discuss concerns and walked the project with me answering questions and confirming detail. They arrived on time as scheduled, did the work well and cleaned up before they left. They outperform by far any other subcontractors I have had working on my project from ****.

Tom was extremely helpful and provided significant input on the best solution to solve my problems. He knew my work wasn't large enough for him to handle yet he called back and even reached out to the siding manufacturer to provide advise. don't hesitate to call Tom as he is honest and will not lead you astray.

The work was for a new home for Spiritual Care Support Ministries in Warrenton, Va across from the tennis club on Airlie Rd and the outside of the building is beautiful now. They used quality products and did quality workmanship. Rick is very good at making color recommendations, and everyone who sees the building says they love the siding/shutter colors.

A representative from Tom Hanger Home Improvement responded to my home in Woodbridge, VA on May 9th, 2017 to provide an estimate for the replacement of siding, insullation, wrap, two basement windows in the rear of the home, and a vinyl wrap on all of the existing windows as well as new shutters. As this is a fair amount of work, the estimate of approximately $10,000.00 was a fair price as I had several representatives from different companies respond out to give me an estimate. The initial consultation and subsequent receipt of an estimate were conducted in a timely manner; however, the follow up was atrocious. I later requested a representative of Tom Hanger Home Improvement to respond out to provide an updated estimate as I was wanted a small window by the front door removed and a new front door. The representative responded out and failed to provide a written estimate. He did however give me a verbal number and stated he would provide a manual of options for the front door. On August 8th, 2017 I sent an email stating that I would be moving forward with another company if I didn't hear from them that week. That day, the representative showed up with a manual for door options. On August 28th, 2017 I sent an email to the representative stating my options for siding, shutters, front door, etc. and explained that I would like to move forward with the installation process. On August 31st, 2017 I was informed that the door company did not match the shutter color I had already chosen (I was told the door company could match any color). At that point, I requested the representative to bring by samples of the different color doors that the company offered, which I never received. I sent several follow up emails and the last communication I received was on September 6th, 2017 that they were "working" on it. I finally decided to go through another company (Cosmos Construction) who I would HIGHLY recommend. The work is fabulous and they paid great attention to detail. I recognize this is a lengthy review, but I feel it is important to ward people away from wasting their time and heaven forbid their money. As a single woman I am furious that someone felt it acceptable to waste my time as this comany has done. Regardless, the work is completed and I am beyond happy. To Tom Hanger Home Improvement, please do NOT try and contact me in any way as you have wasted enough of my time. There is no way to rectify this situation as the work has been completed. Best of luck in your home improvement endeavors.

I was disappointed to here that you have gone thru this. We at Tom Hanger absolutely regret the time it took to get you the Manual. The rest of your statement does not match with what we understood to be happening. From the first meeting we told you that we would not call and harass you like many companies do. That you could call or txt us at any time. We were waiting for you to make up your mind on the door and did not want to Pressure you into making a decision. I am sorry that it went this way. I hope your project goes well.

They did a great job. The price was much less than other contractors, the work thorough, and the final result very pleasing. Rick Hylton, the owner, was very low pressure, gave us multiple options, explaining the pros and cons of each. He advised that we get at least 3 estimates. Each team cleaned up the old materials as they replaced with new. Rick was willing to meet with us at a time convenient for us, even if it was on a Saturday. Payment was made for each part of the job as that segment was completed. We had 32 windows replaced in addition to several bay windows and one gigantic sunporch window for which they had to construct a new frame. We had all the gutters replaced and a leaf guard inserted.
Description of Work: We had roof, windows, and siding replaced as well as vinyl wrap applied and 2 sets of French Doors added, new gutters and leaf guard included.

Summary: My wife and I deeply regret giving our business to Tom Hanger (Rick). Communication, Documentation, Attention to Detail, Install Process, and Customer Service after the sale have been miserable. It is our impression that they are more focused on selling the job and getting it done as fast as possible than they are in doing a quality install and giving good customer service after they?ve received payment. Before the job started Rick insisted that they?re ?the best in the business?. During and after the install, Rick claimed that every issue brought to their attention is due to ?customer?s unrealistic expectations? or ?being too picky? or dismissed as ?we?ve never had an issue before?, as if that?s a good reason. Their work hasn?t held up even a year later. Rick was notified of several issues in April of 2016 and after empty promises, excuses, and several unanswered phone calls and emails we?re still left with 15+ leaking windows, leaking patio door trim and leaking garage door trim as well as several other issues. I wish I would have hired a Hardie preferred installer. I have learned three very valuable lessons regarding hiring contractors after this experience: 1. I believe the more the contractor brags about quality, and how much better they are than other contractors, the more I should be skeptical of their quality. Make them show you the difference. 2. I think if they?re difficult to get ahold of before they?ve gotten your money, they will be nearly impossible to get ahold of after they?ve been paid. 3. In the future I won?t even consider a contractor that doesn?t produce a solid, detailed, signed hard copy contract that clearly details all aspects of the work and materials to be used. Verbal agreements, hand shake deals, and emailed quotes allow too much room for miscommunication and little recourse for the customer. Despite my being very detailed in email communication, it became clear he didn't thoroughly read my detailed emails. The contract is King! Price: Initial price seemed ok. Definitely not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. TH?s promise of top quality would have made it a fair deal; however, the installation experience and after sale quality and responsiveness have made it a terrible value. Quality: Where do I start? From the beginning of the install, we asked Rick to remove the original thin insulation and install plywood sheathing using screws. Despite receiving clear instructions, Rick's crew simply nailed up the plywood over the insulation. When we asked him to take off the plywood, his crew did but the result was cracked grout in our master bathroom, numerous nail pops, and cracks in the drywall (Rick later compensated us for this complication). However, had Rick's crew used screws as we asked, removing and reinstalling the plywood would not have caused so much damage and would not have caused the electrical issues listed below. Initial quality of the install itself seemed ok. We had some small punch-list items, but nothing huge. As time went on, I began to realize what was ?below the surface?. Some things like the caulking and flaking siding deteriorated over the course of a few months. - Caulk around every window trim is cracked and leaking. He initially tried to blame it on the caulk manufacturer. He later conceded that the mfr.?s tests indicated it wasn?t the caulk?s fault. Common sense and the mfr.?s specs indicated they didn?t install correctly. Mfr. specs require minimum .25? bead. In some places it?s so thin it?s almost transparent. Rick insinuated that we had something to do with the failure when he accusingly asked us ?Who else have you had out here working on these windows!??. - Master bedroom smells heavily of mold/mildew since they installed the siding. We suspect it is from the leaking window trim. - Patio door trim is leaking causing staining/mold/mildew - Garage door trim is leaking, rotting wood trim underneath - Caulking pulling away from vents and pvc siding blocks. Leak point. - Excessive face nailing due to poor surface prep. Face nailing is not to manufacturer spec. http://www.jameshardie.com/d2w/installation/hardieplank- hz5-us-en.pdf - Poor trim wrap work. - Wavy window trim. Inconsistent and non-water tight flashing and caulk around trim and siding blocks. - When cutting sheathing off, they sawed into several wall studs on the second story. I will have to sister studs to regain structural integrity. - Used too long nails for sheathing install. They put multiple nails into electrical boxes/Romex. Also likely put a few into concealed ROMEX runs, however, we have no way of checking until there?s an electrical issue or fire. - Destroyed the flashing on a newly installed entry door. Of course they didn?t mention this. I found out later. - Installed a damaged piece of siding that has swollen and flaked off over the past year. TH blames it on customer damage. - Cracked one of the newly installed vinyl windows. Something impacted it on the outside so hard during the install that it pushed the window in and separated the interior trim from the wall. - Loose siding on upper level. - Prior to securing the job, Rick promised his crew ?always? hits the studs with the siding nails. When I pointed out that they weren?t hitting the studs, he then said ?they only try?. - 20+ drywall nail pops throughout the house due to their hammering down staples instead of pulling them. - Several other items due to rushing the job or poor communication. Responsiveness: Prior to getting the job, Rick was hard to get ahold of. He always had an excuse due to some emergency, not "being good with computers", being on vacation, or not receiving the call or voicemail. He was, however, always friendly and apologetic. After they received payment, it was nearly impossible to get ahold of him. Now, when we can get ahold of him my wife and I find him to be rude and condescending. Since attempting to get warranty service from him in April, the only way we could get him on the phone was to ?trick? him into answering by calling from a different phone number. Then he would promise to ?be out next week? to fix the problems. No one would show up. No one would call. No one would send an email. Then we would have to start the cycle over of trying to get ahold of him, being promised service, no one showing up. He hasn?t answered numerous emails and voicemails. We gave up after months of trying. Punctuality: The promised timeline to start the job repeatedly slipped later and later and there was always an excuse. Several times we arranged to meet at the house and he didn?t show up, didn?t call, and wouldn?t answer the phone ? again with an excuse of some tragedy or emergency. He will not put a start time in writing. Professionalism: There were lots of promises of quality and for customer service. We have not seen any of that. To me, it seems like so much marketing and salesmanship. Actions mean a lot more than words and we haven?t seen any action to fix warranty/quality issues. It seems that TH always wants to blame someone or something else vs. taking responsibility and making it right. Also, Tom Hanger doesn?t use detailed, written contracts. We feel this gives them a lot of wiggle room for ?miscommunication? or to claim that something ?was never discussed?. I assume Rick will be much more prompt in responding to this review than he has been in responding to our emails/calls ? and I?m sure it will be somehow ?the customer?s fault? for all the problems. Pics included, many more available for review.

The team was professional and efficient. They removed the siding in that area to find the problem. There was no flashing, which they had to make and install above the 2 windows. Then they reinstalled the siding and caulked. Previously had them replace 10 windows in 2014. They are great windows and have a great warranty. The owner is friendly and very personable. He is very busy and it may take a while for him to call you back. The company has excellent reviews and a good reputation.

I am getting to this review belatedly not because we weren't completely happy with the services provided. Rick, the consultant we worked with was wonderful. He was very helpful in giving us the options and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various products. He helped choose the right trim and finishes to make our house really stand out. Several neighbors who had had their siding done by someone else, complimented us on how great our house looked. He also put us in touch with an electrician and a drywall person that were needed to add the French doors in the dining room. His workmen were very good at their jobs. For the bulk of the work they always showed up on time and the work was done with in the time frame we had been given. However, we had a small issue about some of the trim being sent somewhere else and having a delay of a few weeks before it was installed. It was really not a big deal. All in all, I would highly recommend this company. We felt the cost was very competitive and the upgrade to insulation rather than just a moisture barrier was well worth it.

First. Angies list was the best investment I've made. From the list of siding providers I contacted - there were a total of four and each came to our home and provided me with an estimate. Additionally I gauged their knowledge and experience as we walked around the house. The difference was that Rick Hylton, the owner, (was not a salesman) but had hands-on experience having installed siding himself. This became evident as he pointed out things that the others had not observed. My wife and I also visited work performed by each of the contractors and concluded that the professionalism and craftsmanship by Tom Hanger exceeded the others. Even though the overall and initial price was higher than the others we felt confident that the work would be worth the extra money. Nevertheless, we were able to negotiate the price to a more competitive level. The cost for the Hardie Board, the Low E House Wrap, gutters and leaf guard were well worth the investment. I can't say enough about the attention to detail and craftsmanship of his installers. Rick is easy to work with. He reviews the work each day; is accommodating and believes in customer service and quality of work. The end result is that his company exceeded my expectations - and I should note that my wife who is more critical than I am, could not find anything that she did not like (which is a first). I would highly recommend Tom Hanger for siding (and based on the work - for anything else they do). We will be contacting the company again next year when we'll need a few windows to be replaced.

I emailed Tom Hangar Home Improvement and made an appointment for an estimate on windows and siding. You'd think with such a big job, there might be a bit more responsible behavior. He missed the first appointment claiming that "someone" must have made a mistake and not told him about the appointment. I now know better. We made a second appointment in which I had designs and a very clear idea about what I wanted in windows and siding. The owner, said that it all seemed "easy" and I was looking forward to hearing back in a few days. The owner said he would have a quote in just a few days. He called back on April 8 to just ask about certain windows and I fully expected to hear back with a full quote. To date April 23, nothing. I called two more times to see if I could get him to send me a quote and nothing. He even had the audacity to tell me he had sent me an estimate by email. I left a very clear message again with my email. Nothing. Very unprofessional and holding up my process.

Response from Tom Hanger Home Improvement
Ms. [removed member name] is absolutely correct in almost all of her points. Her call came during a very busy time and, unfortunately, slipped through the cracks. This is not typical of our company. There is no excuse for what happened in this situation and we are deeply sorry for the inconvenience suffered by Ms. [removed member name] . We are a good company that does good work. We pride ourself on going out of our way to meet our customers needs but this type of "miss" is inexcusable. We are certainly happy to get information to Ms. [removed member name] at this point and do our best to rectify this misstep. However, we completely understand her dismay. Please know that this is atypical and Tom Hanger Home Improvement is dedicated to working with homeowners to meet their needs in a timely manner and at an affordable price.

Rick (the owner) and the crew at Tom Hanger were a pleasure to work with. The price was not the cheapest, but it was a fair value and well worth the quality of work. My only complaint was it can be difficult to reach Rick through email. He's very responsive with phone calls, so once you realize that it's not a problem. Rick personally came out to fix a few minor things around the house I noticed after the job (a little siding work that had been missed, tightening up the new door latch). They were also quick to replace a screen that had been damaged during the install. All in all, a very positive experience.

Removed two old windows and installed two new windows. Rick came out to give us an estimate. He answered all our questions and educated us on the process. There are not many, except big box stores(we interviewed two), that will do small jobs. Our job had a few quirks(replacing a sill that had rotted) and the big box stores were unable/unwilling to accommodate us. The installer called to keep us informed on his arrival time. He was very experienced and completed the job quickly and cleaned up after. We are very pleased.

5.5 Stars of Five.... Absolutely superb workmanship, materials, installation and finishing -- new Marvin Integrity windows & doors, complete re-siding with HardiePlank over new plywood sheathing with final HardiePlank trim throughout. We could not have asked for more -- and in fact got more than we knew to ask for. Rick Hylton and his crew were total professionals. In late August after meeting with five different contractors to discuss long-needed replacement of siding & windows on our 40-year old home, we settled on Tom Hanger Home Improvement with Rick Hylton. Rick immediately impressed us while explaining everything involved, and met with us on multiple occasions to nail down the options for exactly what we wanted when replacing the original squirrel-infested cedar siding, the old stuck single-pane windows and the needed doors. Rick provided an incredible team to install those windows/doors, custom-fit the new siding over new plywood sheathing protected by E-wrap, and finally install the needed Leaf-Relief gutter system. Where Rick found original construction problems (as in no backing AT ALL behind portions of the original siding), he fixed them. Where there were savings to be made he consulted with us and offset other costs. Everything was timed like clockwork: windows & doors first, siding & trim second, gutters third. No downtime at all. Working with Rick has been a personal and professional pleasure. I pay him my highest compliment when stating that he & his team have been men of integrity. We highly recommend Rick Hylton/Tom Hanger Home Improvement to anyone needing what such men bring to the table.
Description of Work: Replaced windows, doors, plank siding, trim and gutters -- including repair of original construction where found needed.

What are some of the characteristics of a great company? 1) Honesty 2) Punctuality 3) Respect 4) Pride in their work 5) Quality 6) Happy customers 7) Follow-through Having dealt with Tom Hanger Home Improvement for our recentwork, I can honestly and happily say that they possess these qualities and more. I?d come to Angie?s List to find some potential contractors to discuss a window replacement as well as some gutter and fascia/soffit wrapping that was long overdue. The first company I called was Tom Hanger. Rick was extremely diligent about getting back to me and came out the following day to evaluate my home. Rick sat down with me and explained not only his corporate philosophy, but his company background (Why a guy named Rick owns a company called ?Tom Hanger,? for example) and detailed descriptions on each of the vendors products they represent. After our conversation and a few short measurements he was back in the truck and within an hour I had a quote in my email inbox. Seriously, it was that fast. Here?s where they really set themselves apart. Rick was the first person I?d spoken to about my home improvement project. Could he really have the best product, solution, total pricing, and service of all the contractors available to me? I never get that lucky. So, I decided it was a prudent maneuver to get a second opinion. Or, seven second opinions. I?d told myself I?d only talk to three contractors. Unfortunately I spoke to SEVEN other contractors who, for varying reasons and to varying degrees, only served to solidify the fact that Tom Hanger Home Improvement was the clear choice for my project. From missed appointments to cocky salespeople, from astronomical prices for features that seemed as fictional as a Power Ranger to having my intelligence insulted?Rick?s competition makes him look GOOD. The kicker is, though, he doesn?t need them to look good, his company stands alone at the top of the heap. I called Rick to invite him out to get started and sign a contract, pick up a check, the usual. He called me back and we went over the estimate for?30 seconds. I said I wanted to proceed and he said ?Great!? No fuss, no muss, just a couple gentlemen agreeing to do business. And do business they did. One week ( ONE WEEK!?) later the window crew showed up at my house ready to go at 7AM. The windows were in within 3 hours, caulked, and the cleanup was under way. The team was fast, professional, ENGLISH speaking, and courteous. The horror stories other vendors had told (FUD slinging) had of course NOT come to pass, and if you didn?t notice my new windows you?d have no idea I even had a contractor there. Seriously?impressed. The following day the siding crew was there and ready to roll. This project was significantly harder since they were wrapping each and every piece of trim on my house. No more painting! Tom Hanger Home Improvement represents a unique line of trim wrap that REALLY sets the house apart. Both of my neighbors had their trim wrapped previously and one of them is considering tearing it OFF to have Tom Hanger come do his. It?s that distinctive. Both crews were tremendous, really?truly, words in this case fail to do them justice. Excellent craftsmanship coupled with professionalism and friendly employees amount to a formula for success, and they really have it mastered. My neighbors constantly stop by my house to tell me how good it looks and ask who performed the service. My house went from ?in need of love? to popping out and looking like loving homeowners live there as opposed to squatting homeless. I have Rick and his crew to thank. The price for these services, incidentally, was the lowest of the bids I received. I struggled with the possibility that corners were going to be cut, or that I?d received an inferior product or service. I received neither and can state unequivocally that Rick?s pricing stems from a desire to serve and earn your business, not retire on your dime. I recommend, without hesitation, that anyone looking for roof, window, siding, trim, or gutter replacement services contact Rick at Tom Hanger Home Improvement without delay. Feel free to compare him to his competition, but you will likely find it the same waste of time I did. Once you?ve met Rick, everyone else just looks ordinary.

The team was outstanding. They arrived on time and were very friendly and respectful. They completed the job in exactly the time stated and followed up to be sure we were happy with the results. There was no shady sales pitch or upselling, only a genuine attempt to determine and deliver precisely what we wanted. The windows look and perform great, and I would definitely call them for any additional projects.

Rick always arrived at the agreed upon time, was very pleasant and informative. His initial price was very high, but he reviewed the quote, said he had made an error, and his revised quote was on target. The crew was professional and pleasant. We are so pleased With the end result thanks to the recommendations made by Rick and the attention to detail by the crew.
