During the week of April 4, 2014, twobyfour construction installed hardwood flooring in our living room, dining room, family and hallway; and hardwood stairs in our home. We had existing hardwood flooring in the foyer and half bath on our main level that we asked them to match; however, we requested that the wood be slightly larger in size than what we currently had. While the wood that was installed is similar in color; it appears to be a completely different type and quality of wood. We found that the wood has numerous indentions, scratches and nicks of various sizes in it; and in some cases holes. Also, the areas to the left and right of the stair well where the stair treads were installed were damaged during installation; and the workers did not putty in the areas that were nailed. In addition, during the install the workers bent our screen when they ran an extension cord out of a window in our family room. They also placed our white sofa on the dusty sub floor rather than relocating it to another area. As a result, the sofa was covered with dust. The workers did not adequately clean up after they completed their work; they left nails on the floor in the master bedroom and in our daughter's bedroom. As a result, our daughter cut her foot on one of the nails that was left on the floor in her room. In addition, they left dust and debris in our drive way, yard, and areas of our home. At some point they began cutting wood on top of the rug that was located on our front porch. That same rug was rolled up and brought into our home. We made Bob (don't know his last name), the twobyfour rep or foremen aware of our concerns during the install and afterwards. During his visit on April 4th following the install, we pointed out a number of concerns and asked him how he planned to address the screen being bent and the sofa; as well as our other concerns. Bob suggested that since we planned on having twobyfour perform other work (ceramic tile in the kitchen, carpet in the basement and bedrooms, removal/replacement of kitchen island and cabinetry, counter top and cabinetry in laundry room, etc.); we should have our screen repaired and our sofa cleaned and the cost for this work would be deducted from the final bill for other work completed by his company. Bob told us to take some time to thoroughly look over the flooring work and to give him when we were ready for him to come back out; and afterwards he would have the workers to come out to make the corrections. My husband and I disagreed with Bob's suggestion that we pay out of pocket to have the screen frame repaired and the sofa cleaned and be reimbursed later for work that we may or may not decide to have his company complete. In addition, Gary (the owner of the company) had come to our home prior to the installation of the hw flooring for an estimate; and had promised to provide the written estimate to complete work in our kitchen, laundry room and other areas of our home; and had never provided the estimate nor had he contacted us. In addition, we found an area that had a hole in the wood at the top of our stairs, black tar, orange clay markings, indentions, scuffs, etc. on the hw flooring. I attempted to personally reach out to Gary to advise him of our concerns. I was unable to reach Gary directly so I left him a detailed voice mail message regarding our concerns. We never received a response from Gary regarding our concerns; however, Bob called us and made arrangements to come out to meet with us. He came out on either April 10th or April 11th. During his visit we (my husband and I) explained that while we had not examined the floors thoroughly there were some things that stood such as the hole in the wood at the top of the stairs; and numerous indentions, scuffs, scratches, and marks. Bob explained that the black marks was tar and could be wiped away; he said that the orange marks could have come from the workers marking the wood and that could also be wiped away. He assured us they could correct the deficiencies. We agreed to perform a more thorough review of the flooring so that we could mark the problematic areas and to contact Bob once we had completed that process. Bob asked if we could address it after Spring Break; and we agreed because we planned on being out of town. Bob said to just give him a call and he would come back out so we could go over everything; and then he would schedule his "guys' to come out to putty and/or address the areas of concern. Bob took the screen and said he would have it repaired and indicated he would make arrangements to have the couch cleaned; and give us a call with a date sometime after Spring Break. Bob never called us;however, we called him on May 12, 2014 to arrange an appointment and to notify him of another problem we had become aware of. We had ceramic flooring installed and the other work that we initially hoped to have twobyfour complete; but never received an estimate. During the install of the ceramic tile, we learned that the hardwood floor in the family room was not cut straight; and that the baby threshold that was installed by twobyfour construction camouflaged this issue. When my husband contacted Bob to schedule time to come out to follow-up on our previous concerns and to notify him about our recent discovery; Bob indicated he would not be able to come out until May 15, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. At approximately 2:45 on May 15, 2014; a group of workers from twobyfour construction showed up at our home unannounced. The lead installer who installed our flooring came in and I showed him the areas which required correction which we had applied painters tape to. I also showed him the area where the flooring had not been cut straight. The worker became very argumentative and kept saying "it is not my fault; I did not know you were planning on changing the flooring in the kitchen". I explained that Bob was aware of our intent to install ceramic tile in the kitchen. We also explained that it didn't matter if they knew or didn't know....the wood should have been cut straight and they should not have used the baby threshold as a means to disguise the deficiencies in their work. I told him...we would discuss it with Bob. The worker said he was busy and did not have time to address the other areas that were marked with tape because "it was too much". My husband and I were shocked because we were expecting Bob not his workers. In addition, Bob was scheduled to come at 4:30 not at 2:45. When my husband called Bob, he simply said he could not come that day or the next and he scheduled time to come out on Wednesday, May 21st. Bob did not show up as scheduled on May 21st. When my husband contacted him and he rescheduled for Friday, May 23. He cancelled due to illness and rescheduled for Monday 5/25. He cancelled and rescheduled various times that week before finally showing up on May 30th. When Bob arrived he did not have our screen with him: although he has had it since April 10th. Initially, Bob was pleasant and indicated everything could be corrected with epoxy and putty; however, when I showed him the area where the wood was not cut straight he became belligerent and rude. He claimed that they did not know we were changing the flooring in the kitchen. I reminded him that he was aware that we intended on removing the linoleum and installing ceramic tile in the kitchen; if fact, we discussed it at length and at the time he indicated he would give me a great deal on the job. I also reminded Bob that he was also aware that the project in the kitchen was on hold because I was still waiting on the estimate from Gary to remove/replace the kitchen island, to relocate some cabinetry in the kitchen, etc. This all had to be done prior to or in conjunction with the flooring work in the kitchen. During each of our conversations regarding the flooring work in the kitchen; Bob claimed he would remind Gary to call me regarding the estimate. Rather than accept responsibility; Bob continued to assign blame. Bob said the company who installed the ceramic tile could have cut and installed a new baby threshold. Then he claimed the flooring company did not cut the ceramic tile straight; although the ceramic tile was only cut around the island and cabinetry and not in the area in question. Therefore, his comment was irrelevant. When we hired them we expected them to perform quality work; and did not expect they would try to hide their mistakes then blame us or another company for their mistakes. We also asked about the quality of the wood installed; as we have lived in our home since 2008 and the existing wood does not have the defects that the wood that twobyfour installed has. We also pointed out that the floor is creaking in certain areas and Bob said they could fix that with nails. He indicated he was not free the following week but would be available on Monday, June 9th to address the issue. His suggestion was to install another baby threshold to cover up the area where the wood is not cut straight. That is unacceptable to us; we do not want poor workmanship camflogued with a baby threshold. We paid a significant amount of money for this work; and we expect the work to be done correctly. In addition, the baby threshold is no longer needed because the flooring is now even and no longer requires a transition. In addition, we are not certain how filling the holes, indentions, nicks, etc. in our brand new hardwood flooring with putty or epoxy is an acceptable solution. We expected that the flooring we paid for be free of holes, indentions. scratches and nicks. We also did not expect to be on our hands and knees removing tar and markings from brand new flooring; or for our cloors to be creaking.
Description of Work: They were hired to install some hardwood flooring.

They were terrific. Gary and his son and everybody was so helpful. My husband and I are senior citizens and they were helping us look out for our safety as well as ways of improving things. We couldn't be happier with them and we'll continue to bring them in for other projects. What happened was we had a terrible water leak that pushed everything back but they were very helpful and they worked around it. They were very flexible. They were always straightforward. They were on time. We're thrilled with them and I've recommended them to other people.
Description of Work: I used the "Big Deal" that I purchased for the services of Two By Four Construction. We had a terrible water leak and while things were drying and when they were taking things out, they would do all sorts of other things like help us with our electric wiring. They did all the handyman work.

From the moment I met Gary, Sr. I was convinced he was the guy for the job. As he gave the estimate, it was obvious that he knew his business well. He took the ideas we had for the basement, gave good feedback about what would work and what wouldn't, and then went to work! The entire team was first-rate too. There was great communication, quality work, and the added bonus of being sensitive to our family life - making sure their schedule matched ours as well as possible. The result was fantastic! The main room of the basement (where the wall was taken out) looks like it has always been one room. My wife loves her new office and exercise room. And the custom mudroom has kept jackets and shoes organized - and looks great too! We will definitely call Gary for our next project. Highly recommend Two by Four Construction!
Description of Work: Remodeled basement: took down a wall, built a closet, finished out another room as office/exercise room, built shelving in storage room, extra lighting, and installed laminate flooring throughout. Also took out a closet in entry from garage and made a custom mudroom with bench, cubbies for shoes, shelves, hooks.

Two by Four Construction provided professional assistance in two areas. The first was plumbing for remodeling of the master bathroom. The service provide was Gary Jr. He was professional, courteous, and hgihly competent in his work. I will try to hire him again the next time similar services are needed. The second area was demolision of a complex deck component that had housed a hot tub. Pat and Jaroon did the demo and designed a replacement deck componenet that significantly improved the overall appearance of the entire deck. They accomplished all of this in 2 days. They were focused, efficient, and professional. Again, when work of a home general contractror is needed, I will try to secure them for the job.

Provider did not show up on two dates. I had reserved the loading dock, took time off for two days, paid 900.00 to provider, moved all furniture into adjacent room, depended on the work for insurance purposes. I reserved two dates the 17th and 18th of April. The night before the 17th, I called to confirm. Bob Anderson said the wood had not arrived but he expected it. He called at end of day late in day and asked to reschedule for the 21st of April. I said that I would be in Seattle, that I had reserved the 17 and 18th, that I had paid him half the money and could not reschedule. He said he would do the work in one day on the 18th. He said he would arrive by7 am on the 18th. Bob Anderson called at 6:40 am on the 18th and said his worker called in sick and that he could not do the work on the 18th.

Worst experience we have ever had with a "professional" working in our house, by far. I contacted Gary when we purchased the deal in the fall, communicating that the work would need to be done in early January (i.e., there was lots of advanced notice). He missed the initial appointment, so he and my husband rescheduled for the next week (in December). By mid-March, the work was not completed and communication from Gary stopped. At one point, my husband went to the townhouse, expecting the painting to be done and it was clear that no one had been in the house since his prior visit more than a week before. Gary explained that he thought his men had been working at our house, but had just learned from his workers that our lockbox was broken (it froze and was broken, so we replaced it). But either he didn't know where his workers were for a whole week or he went a whole week without letting us know! Repeated emails and attempts to communicate the urgency of getting the work done failed. On a Friday in early March, he promised to have the painting at least completed by Saturday or Monday. It was not. Monday evening, my husband sent a communication informing Gary that all work needed to be done by Thursday because the carpeting was going in on Friday and the house was going to be staged on Saturday. Gary did not respond and no further work was done. Unbelievable unprofessional. The work his team has completed: replaced 2 ceiling fixtures, replaced and re-routed an outdoor pipe; most of the painting (quality of what was done is mediocre; we had another painter come in and touch it up). Work not completed: minor plumbing (less than one hour) under kitchen sink; re-caulking bathrooms, replace front door frame, ceiling fixture in bedroom removed and left on the floor. My husband spent hours cleaning up after his workers left. He abandoned the project (literally leaving tarps, ladders, filth), and the delay has cost us thousands. We finally changed the combination on the lock box and hired other contractors to finish the work. We had originally planned to put the house on the market by Feb.1, then March 1, then March 15. Now, our goal is to get the house on the market by the end of March.
Description of Work: We hired Gary through an Angie's List Big Deal to help us get a townhouse ready for sale. Through the deal we paid for 5 days, but understood that it would take longer and would pay for additional days. Though Gary did not provide us with an estimate of time to complete the work, from past experience, this should have taken around 10 days. We asked him to paint the interior of entire townhouse (1500 SF), re-caulk two bathrooms, replace 3 ceiling fixtures, replace the exterior front door frame, and do two small plumbing projects.

I have been dealing with this company, Two by Four Construction, for more than five months trying to resolve problems that the son Gary Jr created. I have an incomplete kitchen at my son's home and damage to the top of the crown molding above the wall cabinets. The company continues to take contracts through Angie's List, but in five months they have not come back to finish the job. Initially, the owner Gary Sr. came out to my son's house to give a quote for the required work and he seemed knowledgeable. The first and second day of work went pretty well, however on the third day, Gary Jr. did not install the crown molding correctly as he was instructed. I was not present on the third day and in my absence, the crown molding was improperly installed too low, not meeting the ceiling and Gary Jr. was subsequently told to stop work and take it down until the issue could be resolve with me. Gary Jr. also brought in a second worker that day without first consulting me first and this used up additional labor hours unnecessarily. In addition, I discovered several gaps, up to a quarter inch, in the crown molding that is still in place. I've have been trying to get Gary (the owner) to come out since 7 November to resolve this issue with my son and I. Gary has had multiple family concerns that prevented him from coming out. We were understanding of this, but through our patience we were neglected while he continued to take on additional work. Two different appointments were not met by Gary Sr to show the work we were unsatisfied with. This took over an hour and a half of travel time on my part that was completely wasted. These appointments were "no call/no shows." The third appointment date on 22 Feb, both Gary' and Gary Jr. came to my son's home to see and hear our issues with the workmanship. Gary Sr saw our concerns, admitted that the work could have been much better, and agreed to correct the issues himself. We came up with a list of the things that needed to be corrected and how many hours remained on our contract. He sent a follow up email the next day but didn't include any time frame for when he could come to complete the work at my son's house. We requested multiple times over the next two weeks for dates he could perform the work. We sent him 16 different dates in March that would work for us and my son even offered to try and bend his work schedule for other days if needed. This job should have been a priority because of the issues needing correction and the time lost to date. Since 22 Feb, I've had nothing but emails back and forth and he now says his first available date is 14 April, six weeks after 22 Feb, to begin correcting the existing work and finish up the remaining contract labor hours. I am now requesting my money back for the Big Deal so that I can find someone else to finish this job. I was willing to let him correct the work, but my time and frustration in dealing with this situation is now more than I am willing to cope with. I have no faith in this company's workmanship, dedication to their craft, or reliability to hold to a schedule. Desired Resolution: Materials: 6 Pieces of Chocolate Brown (Starter molding) $780 2 Pieces of Cornice $250 Materials = $1030 Labor: 15.5 hours x $42.83 p/hour = $665. 8.5 remaining hours on the contract. 7.0 hours work for the final day of their third trip to our house has to be pulled down. That days work is wasted. $1695 is the total of our expenses for the workmanship issues we have. This is not even including the labor it will cost us to have a different contractor pull that work down. There was also a piece of Rope trim that was cut but only a small amount so we will not use that in our figures. Eventhough the materials will cost me more than the Big Deal Contract, my desired resolution is for a contract refund in full.

We started this job last August & went out for (1) day at a time because the customer had so many issues with the cabinet company. We had to adjust, sand etc. the cabinet to get them to fit properly. They cancelled (2) times & we cancelled (2) times which did not make it longer to complete the work. This job is the biggest nightmare I have ever dealt with because of the cabinet issues. The last time we went out we installed the moulding the way that the husband & son said to install. The wife/mother did not want it that way. I did see where there may have been a communication problem so we said we would go back for a few hours. They in return kept adding more & more hours which I wasn’t willing to do for free. The problem is we were working on the son’s house & the mother was running everything but not always there. We will not do that again! We even went to Fredericksburg because we were working on another job. The work that was done was quality work with poor quality cabinets.

It went just fine except for the fact that frequent snow and ice storms meant that, instead of being able to start, work straight through and finish the job in one fell swoop, there were delays of a day or two here and there during the process until the workers could get back to my house. That was not in any way the fault of the company or the workers. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the workmanship - don't think I've ever had any work done on my house with more perfection than these men from Two by Four Construction.
Description of Work: Installed a shower and a small linen closet in a large powder room on first floor; removed and replaced flooring in that bathroom down to the moldy sub-floor and put all new tile down; repaired toilet tank leak.

I met with the owner and gave him a laundry list of things that had to be done before Thanksgiving. I bought the 1-week Handyman service for $1400. Here is the list: - fix leaky door/window that lets in water when it rains very hard - replace worn-out kitchen faucet (I purchased the replacement and had it ready) - replace the goopy and sometimes leaking kitchen pvc pipe under the sink - replace the hardware for the front door (dead bolt and handle set), I purchased a new one and had it ready to go) - replace the master bedroom toilet (I purchased a new one and had it ready to be installed) - replace one garage door opener (this I didn't purchase, so they bought one for me and I reimbursed them) - install a storm door that I purchased. So they scheduled me for a two and a half long days with two-handymen on deck, and they started with the most important thing: the leaky door/window. Turns out there was a flaw in the way the builders hastily built my house. There was a one-inch gap between the gutter and the home and the water had been funneling right through the frame and into the house whenever it rained really hard. They had to climb up really tall ladders to remove soggy wood and replace it with whole beams of good wood. This repair alone probably should have eaten up my entire contracted amount. When the day almost came to an end, instead of just leaving the job halfway finished, they called in about three other contractors with trucks and spent the evening finishing up. These guys were up on ladders and tied to the house with a rope so they wouldn't fall, in the dark, using spotlights, so that they could finish before the next day's forecasted rain would ruin their hard work. They even painted the trim with a matching color so it would be completely done... this was DAY ONE! I felt awful that I had let the leak go on as long as I did. The guys were very nice and didn't scold me at all but we all knew that if I had waited even one more season, things would have been much worse. The next day, the guys came and did EVERYTHING ELSE on the above list, except the storm door, which wasn't urgent at all. I highly recommend this team. The father and son work well together and you can tell that they love what they do.

Estimator arrived late advising he got lost. He measured the area and provided the estimate. When I said it was higher than I expected he asked me if he could work up another estimate and call me back later. He called back and gave me a much lower estimate. It was so much lower I was concerned with why the first was so high and what I would be losing with the reduction. . . Wood value or service quality. I advised I wanted to get another estimate for a price comparison and he agreed I could.

Thank you for your review. I just wanted you to know the reason the price was lower was he came to me and explained the issue with the $2499 deal and I ask him to give you a credit for your flooring. Thank you again and hope you had a good experience with your other flooring contractor.

Thank you for your review, If memory serves me correctly in our conversation you had stated that you had a certain amount to do the work and I let you know that we could not do the job for that amount. I believe it was a Stanley Martin home. If you wanted any additional information and I didn't get it to you I apologize. Thank you again for your review.

It went pretty good. I was pleased with the product. We had some scheduling problems because of bad weather but that was totally weather related not related to customer service. They did a good job and we're pleased with them. I like the efficiency of how they work together. I purchased the big deal 200 square foot and additionally purchased from the regular pricing additional installation to complete all floors and stairways. They were very efficient in completing the job. They moved all my furniture around the room and from room to room - although I couldn't really expect anybody to do that as I am in the middle of moving and have quite a mess -- however they moved it all and made it look easy! I love the floors and the quality of the product - it looks very nice. Their price was competitive - as I researched prices prior to purchasing the big deal. I would use them again; I am asking them to provide estimates to redo my kitchen. I recommend them.

They were a nightmare. Neither project was even halfway completed. Because of the work their contractors did, I had to get a lot of work re-done, and the plumbing they did burst. Their quality was miserable.
Description of Work: I bought a Big Deal from them for a handyman or a general contractor for a week. I was going to use them to begin the remodeling of a bathroom and for some tile work in the foyer.

[removed member name] Thank you for your review. I would like to start out by saying we didn't do any plumbing for you. We removed the tile floor in the bathroom and then you added us removing the vanity, vanity top, trim and drywall repairs. You had the wrong materials which we had to wait on for the foyer. We give you 35 hours and you add items but still expect that we get everything done that we talked about in the beginning. That cannot be done when you continue to add items to the list and the materials are not on the job site when they are suppose to be or the wrong materials. When you and I met you understood all of this and We even came out and gave you 4 extra hours at no charge. When you and I talked everything was fine and now you give us a bad review. We were there before the time and waited on you and all you do is give us a bad review. Even so it was a pleasure working with you and again thank you for the review. We agree to do the tile in the bathroom floor and the tile in the foyer. The allotted amount of time is 35 hours. Vince added the removal of the vanity, vanity top, trim and some drywall. Vince stated he wanted us to work on the bathroom first. We completed the bathroom floor and grouted. We layed some tile in the foyer and cut a lot of the tile. We ended up giving him a total of 40 hours. We did not install any valves in the bathroom. We DO NOT use glue-on valves and haven't used them in 25 years. We only use pex or shark bite valves.

When I first contacted the 2x4 - by Angie's list message - I wanted to know what it would cost to remove the existing (because it wasn't included in the price). I received a prompt reply from 2x4 - and they agreed to come out and look at the floor (prior to me buying the deal). Bob came out at the appointed time with the complete estimate. We then arrange to set up a date. The floor was done in one day and came out perfectly, the kitchen looks so much bigger. I was so pleased with the results. I would definitely seek out 2x4 for other renovation projects.
Description of Work: I ordered the $999 hardwood floor deal from Angie's list. 2x4 Construction installed beautiful floors in my 9/7 size kitchen.

I purchased a coupon through Angie's list. Prior to my service date, I sent a list of things I needed to have done after closing on my house. There was no initial visit to my house and no indication that everything on the list couldn't be accomplished in the purchased time. I was unfamiliar with what materials were needed, and sent several emails which were never answered and left phone messages which were not returned. Workers showed up to my house and I had to use labor hours to drive to the store with a worker to purchase materials. They proceeded to go through my list and tell me that nearly none of the items could be done. Nearly everything that couldn't be done was due to a lack of available materials - all of which could have been solved if any of my emails or phone calls had been responded to. I paid for $1500 for 36 hours of work. In that 36 hours the ONLY things that was done was hanging two hallway lights. THAT IS IT. I called and spoke to the owner of the company who said that my experience was unacceptable. He instructed me that the workers would return and finish any projects that were not done. One man showed up a few days later and was extremely, extremely aggressive and rude. He yelled at me for calling to complain and said he wasn't being paid for the work he would do that day. He refused to speak to me or discuss what needed to be done. He opened a can of paint and destroyed the beadboard in my bathroom and stomped out of the house. No further contact with the company could be made (they use a phone service). In fact, so many things were halfway or incorrectly done, I am now having to pay to have them corrected. I have a ceiling light that was hung and a huge hole left in the ceiling, a sliding glass door installed upside down, a front door with one horrible layer of latex paint on it, destroyed beadboard, paint stained walls and sink, and two unfinished shelves in a pantry. I would NEVER want anyone else to experience the unprofessional and sub-standard work provided by this company.

I wanted to get all of our information together before I responded to this review. Here is a list of the items that were done in your home; (4) lights is stairways,(1) light in dining room which we had to reinforce the ceiling box just to hold the light, (1) light in bathroom, (2) shelves in pantry that you said your painter would paint, tongue and groove bead board in the bathroom which we had to remove the sink, commode, TP holder and re-install afterwards, You said your painter would paint the bead board, Installed base board and chair rail on the bead board, Install new front door and set hinges, installed new lock on front door, painted front door, repaired master closet door and moved furniture to complete this work. We gave you two workers for 18 hours instead of the 35 hours as the deal states, We didn't meet ahead of time because you didn't own the home and couldn't get into the house, you added items to your list but still wanted us to complete everything. This is an allotted amount of time and we completed a lot of the work and you just kept wanting more. If one of our guys spoke to you in that manner I do apologize because we do not allow that in this company what so ever. I will not however apologize for all the work we did that you call bad because it was not bad workmanship. As for the going to Home Depot well I explained to you that we could pick up the materials and deduct that from the time and you thought that was a great idea because you didn't know exactly what to get. Thank you for your review. Again if any of our workers spoke to you as you described I am truly sorry because we do pride ourselves in being above that level.
