 + 0 moreMy wife initially called Michael and Son's when our air conditioner wasn't working. They came and performed a diagnostic and determined the compressor failed. After verifying the compressor was still under warranty, they said they could replace it for $1900 plus an additional $800 charge to reclaim, evacuate, and recharge the freon. That sounded expensive for what I estimated to be about a half day's work. I called 3 other places including Shaw's. The estimates ranged from $885 to $1100 with Shaw's being the lowest. Based on their high rating on Angie's List and their low price, I chose Shaw's. The work was performed a few days later. The people were punctual, professional and very knowledgeable.
Description of Work: Replaced a failed compressor on the heat pump. The compressor was under warranty.

 + -1 moreOur air conditioner was not running correctly, ran constantly and wasn't cooling the house. We knew that the hot weather was coming this holiday weekend and needed to get it fixed before then. We called Shaw's and they made an appointment for the next day. Arrived at the beginning of the two hour window and solved the problem. While he was here, the technician also showed us a feature of our cooling system that we were never aware of ... an airflow diverter in the main vent, our entire upstairs is now much cooler than the two floors below! In the 16 years that we've had other a/c companies come to the house, none have mentioned this previously. We would HIGHLY recommend this company! When it comes time to replace our system, they will definitely who we call!

 + -1 moreAfter reviewing several estimates from Angie's top-rated HVAC companies, Shaw's quotes were the most competitive and thoroughly detailed. I was able to navigate online resources based on their quotes to evaluate the best system for our home. The installation went very smooth and they replace the furnace/AC in just over one day. Based on the excellent service and installation I will definitely call them again for future HVAC needs.
Description of Work: I found Shaw Services on Angie's list and worked with Don to choose a new system to replace our old HVAC. The Shaw estimate was competitive and explained the local code requirements that others touted as a free addition. Our old company was not able to compete with their offer and some of the bids were $2,000 higher for the exact same model.

He showed up on time, directed his attention to the concerns first, and then proceeded to thoroughly evaluate my AC system so that it was prepared for our cooling needs. He explained the needs of our system and gave me options. He even provided me with pros and cons of those choices. This was definitely a new and refreshing change for me since few technicians provide an honest assessment of how I should proceed with caring for our old AC unit and heating furnace. He left a thorough note of what services he performed and an estimate of how much it would cost if I chose one of the options discussed.

Description of Work: Installed a whole home humidifer in my townhouse's little cramped space. It took a little longer than expected but they did excellent work. The space was completely cleaned up.  + -1 moreI found Shaw Services on Angie's list. I spoke with Jim the technician on the phone around noon on a Saturday. Based on my description of the problem he suggested that it was probably a broken ignitor and told me what the cost would be if that was actually the source of the problem. He arrived approximately an hour later as promised. His guess about source of problem was correct. He showed me the broken ignitor element before going back out to his truck to get a replacement. He was able to put the replacement in quickly and also took time to clean flame sensor. Based on the good service I received from Shaw, I will definitely be calling them again when I need additional work done on my furnace or air conditioner.

He was embarrassed he had to charge us $90 for the call and $90 for the service. I wanted to buy the year's warranty protection and he threw that in and didn't charge me for the repair. He told me to call him back this November and he will then check the furnace for the winter. He was a good guy. The service was good and I was happy.

Description of Work: This is my second time using Shaw Services and I am even more impressed than the first time. I was just hoping for a simple for a simple repair but the Shaw technician, after a thorough inspection, recommended that the unit be replaced. I know, I know...I was just as suspicious. After all, this means more of a profit with a new unit vice a simple repair. Well, that was the problem, the repair was not so simple. The technician informed me that a repair could be done and gave me an estimate of the obvious problems. The risk was not knowing the extent of the problem(s) once he tore the unit apart. My house was built in 2005 and I bought it in September 2010. However, since being in the house, I have had nothing but problems and had no reason to believe that they would stop. More importantly, I had no reason to not believe the Shaw technician. I was given three recommended units that had differing ranges in efficiency. In the end, I chose the Carrier Infinity 95 Variable Speed furnace with the infinity controller. I figured that it was best to pay a little more for a top of the line unit and not worry about being nickeled and dimed with a lesser unit or a costly repair. After shopping around, Shaw Services had the best deal and the owner, Don, even came to the house to take the measurements for the new unit and gave me a credit for the cost of the repair from the first repair of this unit. This was totally unexpected and unnecessary but fully welcomed (thanks Don!). The installation of the Carrier furnace is very professional and done quickly. I sincerely appreciate the work ethic of the Shaw staff and the effort that they make to ensure that my family and I are comfortable and not feeling like we were "taken for a ride". As I stated in my first review...Shaw Service will be the company that services my HVAC units.

 + -1 moreCalled on a Saturday afternoon when my rental called to tell me the AC had quit working. Their answering service provided the phone number to their on call technician who answered right away and actually tried to run through some trouble shooting over the phone for free to save us the weekend service charge. Unfortunately that didn't work, and he had to come out to replace a faulty capacitor. He also checked the coolant levels and made sure everything else was working ok. This was the third place I called and they were the only ones that said they were able to come out right away. Very satisfied with their service.

 + -1 moreCondensation started leaking from our coil and we realized we had a problem. To make a long (and soggy) story short, after the problem was diagnosed (previous owner had never cleaned the vents and the coil was beyond filthy), we realized we had to have the AC and coil replaced quickly. We got good estimates and met with several great companies, but we were most impressed with Don Shaw. He spoke with me on the phone twice and sent me estimates for five options right away, then came to our house to look at our problem the next day. His attention to detail was terrific--he pointed out things that others had missed. We had to replace the AC and coil, so we decided to replace the aging furnace at the same time. Lucky for us, Shaw Services installed our new system on the first day of a 100+ degree heat wave; they did the whole job, including a lot of custom duct work and repositioning of the furnace (the old furnace was too close to the wall for county code) plus thorough clean up--in a single day. We love our new system--it is so quiet and effective--and we will definitely use Shaw Services for any maintenance in the future.

 + -1 moreMy external AC unit died on the hottest day of the year (104F), and I rang Shaw's after finding them here on Angie's List. I received a phone call back after leaving a VM prior to their office opening, and was informed that someone would be onsite between 10am - 1pm. Jim from Shaw's rang me @ 10:10am to inform me he would be at my home in 10 minutes. As it turned out, a capacitor had burned out, and Jim was able to replace it immediately. By the time I arrived home (my husband was onsite), the repair had been completed and the AC unit was back up an running. Not only will I keep Shaw's on speed dial, but I will recommend them to my neighbors, friends and family.
Description of Work: External AC condensor capacitor blew out and seized up the unit. Shaw's came out and replaced the capacitor immediately, and the AC was up and running.

 + -1 moreDon Shaw visited the house and followed up with the most detailed contract options that were by far the clearest of the 5 l that we received. He included details about energy savings returns from Carrier ($1,000) and on taxes as well and supplied all required forms. After we chose an option we scheduled and had the job done. It took two days. Everything was smooth. Good crew and professional hard workers. Shaw's price was not the lowest, but very competitive.
Description of Work: The Shaw crew replaced an old heating stove and air conditioner. They removed and hauled the old appliances and extending devises for these natural gas units. They installed the new units and connected outdoor vents, separate outdoor fuse box and water drain pipes to our sump pump. .

 + -1 moreDon Shaw came to our house and examined the job. He gave us an estimate several days later. Shaw had done two jobs for us earlier and we were happy with the results. So we agreed to his offer and several weeks later they did the work. They came in the morning about 9:30 a.m. and worked all day until about 6:30 p.m. to finish the job. They put a 18000 btu Mitsubishi heating and air conditioning unit in our sunroom. they did cut through an electric line that was under the floor and had to deal with fixing that. There was a support beam against the house and the lines to the unit had to be run into the room about one half inch near the floor to avoid compromising the structure. They did their best to avoid damaging the wall any more than necessary thus saving me some repair work. They cleaned up afterward and finished the job in one long day of work. The price was a little higher than we expected but the use of our sunroom year round is worth it. The unit is very quiet and works smoothly.
Description of Work: Installed an air conditioning and heating unit in our sun room with the coil unit outside. I was responsible for all of the dry wall repair and painting.

 + -1 moreMy central AC unit started leaking water heavily from one of the pipes leading into the unit, flooding my laundry room floor and dampening the carpet in the basement. I had had this issue before, and last year had K&K come out to fix it, but a year (and $345) later...it was leaking again. I called a few companies from Angie's list at around 8pm the 29th. Shaw was the first to return my call, at 7:45am the next morning, and they were able to send someone out that very day. The service tech, Jeremy, was prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable. He figured out almost immediately what the problem was (one of the pipes was clogged, so the humidity from the air was pooling up and dripping from the pipe), and installed an "EZ Trap" that allowed me to see if the pipe was getting clogged again so that I could clean it out with the brush provided. He also found that my coolant was low, and recommended I fill it up, which I did. Additionally, he noticed that my outdoor unit was rather loud and took it upon himself to see if he could quiet it down a bit. All in all, the total was $440 (would have been $280 if I hadn't added freon), which includes their $90 diagnostic fee. I am very satisfied and would definitely recommend Shaw!

 + -1 moreGreat company to work with from start to finish. Their quote was the best of all the companies that I checked to start with. They arrived on time for both the estimate and the actual work. They told me before they started that to get the air handler in the attic that they might have to remove the wood trim around the access hole. But the installers were nice enough to take the air handler apart to get it through without have to remove the trim. They reworked the ducts so that airflow was up through the handler instead of down and even added valves on the ducts so that I could control the airflow to each room if I wanted to. Additionally they added a special safety switch on the drain to cut off the unit's power if the drain ever clogged. They cleaned up outside and inside completely and explained the entire system. The three of them just did a fantastic job from start to finish. I will use them for annual service now too.

 + -1 moreOur AC unit was over 25 years old, and we wanted to get it replaced before the summer heat set in. We also wanted to relocate the AC unit from the back of the house to the side of the house to make room for a deck. Don Shaw came out to the house for the estimate. The furnace was 15 years old, and he discussed the pros and cons of keeping the current furnace vs. replacing both the AC and furnace all at once. He was willing to do either, but I decided to have them both replaced. He also explained in detail what would need to be done to move the AC unit to the side of the house. His estimate provided several different options in terms of models and price, and was competitive with two other companies that provided estimates. After selecting them to do the work, we set the installation date (two day job), and shorlty afterwards a business trip came up for me during the install window. Don was very gracious and worked with me to reschedule to a time when I could be home. His crew was very professional and courteous. They worked two long days, but got the job done on schedule. The work, fit and finish, was excellent. They also did a great job cleaning up. I highly recommend Don and his team, and I will use them again!

 + -1 moreOur AC stopped working on 6/22/2011. I had called another A/C repair service on 6/23/2011, and was told they couldn't get out until the next day. I called Shaw about 12:00 noon, and I believe I talked with Judy Shaw. She said they would have a man there between 3-5 P.M. that day. At 3P.M. Jim arrived, went right to work on the compressor unit, found the problem within 10-15 min. (a bad capacitor), and had the A/C repaired, and working again within 30 min. I felt the charge was somewhat high ($275 less 10% - Angie's discount), but I chalked it up to A/C not working, and rapid response on a day when the outside temp was in the 80's. Jim was pleasant, knowledgeable, responsive, and efficient (and a bit prescient - he had just picked up the capacitor he needed that morning!!). I would not hesitate to use Shaw's again, and will recommend it to our friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: At 3P.M. Jim arrived, went right to work on the compressor unit, found the problem within 10-15 min. (a bad capacitor), and had the A/C repaired, and working again within 30 min.

He explained what the problem may be and multiple options for how to address it, and also provided a rough initial estimate. In the following days I received a detailed formal estimate for the various options and (upon request) for two different brands. At the end, we chose to have the entire system replaced at once. After we agreed, the team of technicians arrived perfectly on time, prepared with all the materials and tools they would need, and completed the job even earlier than scheduled. This team worked very effectively and professionally. I would highly recommend Shaw Services!
