My wife called me on my way home from work to report that our heating system was not working and the house was cold. When I got home I noticed the wall thermostat had no power and the system was not responding at all. I checked all the fuses and then called Shaw's. Since it was after hours, the message indicated that their tech Jeremy was on call. Jeremy promptly answered his cell phone and in spite of the fact that he was driving home, he pulled over and spent about 20 minutes talking me through the diagnostics. He identified the problem and offered to either talk me through replacing a fuse on the unit's circuit board or come over to fix it. Being somewhat handy, I opted to have him talk me through it. I found the fuse, then called him back after a trip to the hardware store. He finished walking me through the process and then walked me through how to put the thermostat into diagnostic mode to see if the event log recorded any other issues. We're up and running and no further problems. Jeremy spent all total about 35 minutes of uncompensated time helping me which I greatly appreciate. As always Shaw Services goes above and beyond the call of duty for their customers!
Description of Work: Jeremy the on call service tech spoke to me after hours and accurately diagnosed the problem. He walked me through fixing the problem and helped me review the thermostat's event log to make sure there were no other issues. Problem fixed!!!

We got bids from two other companies, and ultimately chose one of the others. We very much appreciated Shaw's quick response time and estimate process, though. We would recommend that others call upon them, as well.

I can't say enough positive things about Shaw Services. I ended up getting five quotes for the above listed work and while Shaw wasn't the lowest bid, it was still competitive. The main reason why I decided to go with Shaw is because of their slogan I read on Don's (owner) business card: "For Those Who Appreciate Quality." I knew right then and there I wouldn't have to worry about things not being done right the first time which I am a HUGE proponent of; when you make the extra effort to do things right the first time it saves time, money, and aggravation in the long run. Perfect example of this is when the drip pan they custom fabricated was too big for the utility closet: they didn't do some quick fix to get it to fit or force it in, they either took it back to the shop to shorten the length properly or made a new one. I didn't bother to ask because either way, they made the extra effort to do it right. Additionally, Don was patient with me during the entire process. He came out in November to do his assessment, but because I wanted to lay down rubber tiling and possibly put in soundproofing material for the utility closet he had no problem with waiting several weeks to complete the job (it took six weeks alone to have the rubber tiles made and delivered). Don also had no problem with spreading the work over two days: first day to remove the water heater, furnace AND washer/dryer so that I could lay down the rubber tiles afterwards and second day to install the new equipment. While Don's crew was here for 13+ hours the second day despite removing the equipment the previous day, they had a lot to do and it further attests that they don't take shortcuts to get the job done sooner. They simply live by their slogan: For those who appreciate quality. I am very discriminating when it comes to spending money for someone else to do the work, but they met my expectations on all fronts. You simply can't go wrong with Shaw Services!

We purchased a Trane heat pump in May 2012. Shaw did an excellent job. On Christmas Eve northern Virginia was hit with an ice storm, which continued through Christmas Day. The sensor controlling the defrosting of the heat pump malfunctioned, which resulted in a layer of ice buildup both inside and outside of the unit. Don Shaw personally came to the house as soon as he could and handled the repair at no charge. Terrific service and expert work. This company is terrific.

Since the weather had turned a bit cooler we had some time to research a variety of companies when our A/C broke. We called several companies and Shaw's wasn't the lowest price; however, they were very competitive. They seemed eager to please. The owner of the company came to our home to inspect our system, laid out exactly what we needed and answered all my concerns. We scheduled an appointment for installation and the men were here at the appointed time. Everything went as planned. No problems. Very professional.

Contacted Shaw for an estimate and they came when they said. The owner looked over the work carefully and let me know exactly what was involved and answered all my questions. I felt confident that he knew what he was talking about. He also matched another quote. The day we had agreed went perfectly. The crew of 3 showed up when they said, and after we went over the work they got busy. The had to come in and out quite a bit and were always careful to remove their shoes as it was a wet day. The person in charge went over and above what we asked by taking the time to point out a few options for the future and potential problems and also fixed a small pipe which had a crack in it. They were all polite and friendly. If I have any need in the future I will definitely be calling Shaw Services again.

We were in the middle of a major renovation in our house and realilzed, in short order, that our current heating/air conditioning unit was not going to accomodate the additional living space. In fact, it had been insufficient to cool the entire house before the renovation. It would stay on constantly, all summer long, all day and all night, putting our electric bill over the top every summer. It was time to upgrade and there was no way to put it off any longer. We had several companies bidding on a completely new system, (which was to include thousands of additional dollars in new renovations to accomodate the necessary duct work). We were stopped dead in our tracks because the cost was going to be WAY over the budget we had allotted for the renovations. When Don Shaw arrived, we weren't optimistic. He heard us out, looked over the entire house and agreed that replacing the system was going to be a very involved job and would, indeed, cost us an arm and a leg. But then he asked if we had considered a remote wall unit. Nobody had told us about them, so we were all ears. Don gave us the broshures for a Mitsubishi heat pump unit, which attaches to an interior wall (near the ceiling) and provides heating and air conditioning for a certain amount of living space. He expained all of the work that needed to be done, what the final product would look like, and the effectiveness of the new unit. He measured the area and told us that we would need two wall units to accomodate the additional living space that we had created. (Each heat pump will accomodate up to three wall units) We were eager to look at a quote. His price was going to save us thousands of dollars. Before hiring him, we looked on Angies list again and really combed through the reviews of his company. He had an almost perfect score and we could see that this was a company run with integrity. We felt that choosing him was going to be a good decision. So we did. Don sent his employees, Daniel and Jeremy, who were polite, professional, and helpful in determining where the units should be placed so that they would be the most effective. They installed one extremely quiet heat pump unit outdoors (they put it next to our current unit), ran the electrical work strategically through the house to the walls where the units were to be installed, and also ran condensation lines to areas where they could drain properly (one into a laundry room utility sink and one into an existing gutter downspout). They put up the wall units, leaviing very little drywall to repair and repaint (we expected much more of a mess, cosidering the extent of the work). Daniel spent a good deal of time showing me everything that they had done. We started outside at the heat pump unit which i didn't realize was on until we walked in front of it and I felt the breeze. We went over all of the electrical work and condensation drains, showing the care they had taken not to disturb any existing work that was there before they arrived. He took a good deal of time explaining all of the features of the units and how to operate the remote control. I was impressed by the patience he displayed while answering my myriad questions about "what if's" and "when would I's". I was completely satisfied with my experience with Shaw Services, from the first hand shake to the final payment. What made me the most impressed was the fact that nobody else had suggested an alternative to the crazily expensive replacement that they were all suggesting. Shaw Services put integrity above the almighty dollar and gave us what we wanted while still working within our budget. As a result, they have a life long customer and someone who is ready to refer them to anyone without hesitation. Kudo's to Don Shaw for running a company with such a great work ethic!

My air conditioner was constantly running and not turing off. I had a technician come out to see what the problem was. The tech came out and said that one of my heating coils was rusted and all the frion had leaked out. He added frion and gave me a deal since my system was almost empty. He said that since my system was old (It was the orginal heat pump system that was installed when the house was built) he might not be able to find the coil. If he couldn't find the coil, I would need to replace the whole system. He said he was going to call me the next day and let me know if he found anything. I have not heard from this tech since that day. No I didn't miss his phone call nor did I receive any voicemails. As far as I am concerned the company lost out on a system replacement. I called another company to replace the whole system. I was really disappointed because the tech was so nice and helpful that I was looking forrward to working with them.

This is a very fair report. I am very sorry that my technician did not get back to you. I thank you for taking the time to write a review because the Angie's List members deserve a fair report. I really don't know what happened in this situation. I was unaware that the technician had told you he would get with you since it wasn't even written on the ticket. Typically, if I know one of my guys has told a customer they will get back to them, I check to be sure this happened. I am totally guessing...but he probably just forgot. As you know, we had a very hot summer and the guys were working long hours. Dropping the ball, like what happened with you is not typical. My guys really try to do their best for our customers and treat Shaw Services like it's their own company. We appreciate that. I did ask Jim about it today. He keeps a notebook for himself that he can reference back to. He said he didn't see any notes about calling you back. He's guessing that he simply forgot. He asked me to apologize on his behalf. I wish I had known at the time that my technician hadn't gotten back to you. I would have been able to do something about it. I'm very glad to hear that you did get a company to replace your system. Since you likely found that company on Angie's List, they probably did a great job. Again, I apologize that you didn't receive a follow up. I do thank you for your report. They help our company so we can work to find a way to be sure this doesn't happen again. If we don't know there is a problem, we cannot fix it. Exceptional Service!! My AC stopped working and I had another service company looked at the unit and they said that I needed a new AC unit as the current one was leaking freon. Mr. Shaw came by and checked out everything and told me that my clogged up filter was the root cause of the issue - blocking the cold air to be delivered through the vents. This was backing up all the way to the unit and causing the freeze. He did not even charge a service call fee and also called and verified several days later that the problem was solved. Very Honest and reliable person. I wish there were few more out there like him. For any future HVAC issues, he will be the only person that I would be calling.

I called to get an appointment and they were able to get me in early the next day. The tech called to say he was running a bit early and arrived just about appointment time. He charged the unit because the freon was low. In the process, there was a knob that was broken and though the tech did not fix it at the time, they came back out and fixed it as well as re-inspected our unit. The freon is holding at this time "yay"!! They replaced a vent in our daughters room as well even though it wasn't on the orignal service call. They called to make a return appointment and arrived promptly and were very professional as well as very caring.
Description of Work: I want to let everyone know that this company really does care about the service that is provided. I was not satisfied with their first visit and Don called me and came back out with Jeremy. They went above and beyond making sure that they did everything they could for me. They even replaced an air vent that was not even on the original service call. The passion that Don displayed about his business and taking care of his customers was very genuine and Jeremy returned to my house to finalize the services and he was great, kind and caring. We talked about the future of our unit. They gave me all of my options and explained it all throughly. When the time comes to put in a new unit I will certainly call upon Shaw after this week because I truly believe they care about the work they do and the people they do it for. Though I give them a B for Price I realize that Freon is expensive so they are driven by what the price is they have to pay.

Outstanding. Another service company looked at the unit and said I needed a new vale, at a cost of $1,200. That seemed a bit much, so I asked Mr. Shaw to give me his opinion. He promptly looked at the unit, said the valve was fine, and diagnosed the problem as the fan speed being set too high. He set the speed lower, and did not ask for payment until he verified several days later that the problem was solved. Absolutely outstanding.

I was pleasantly surprised that the tech actually tried to walk me through the problem over the phone to help me. Unfortunately I do not have a good knowledge of the basic HVAC stuff and so he came out to do a service call which he stated would be $150. He very quickly diagnosed the problem and charged me the basic $150 for service call. Very trustworthy guy and I would definately use them again!

Overall, my first experience with Shaw was positive. One of my compressors stopped running and I didn't know why. I called Shaws at 10 am for a service call (having just found them on Angie's list) and was told they would be here between 11 and 1. I was very pleased that the tech arrived at my house at 10:55, so no need to wait around. He quickly diagnosed the problem, made the repair and cleaned up after as well. I've used John Nugent in the past with success, but I'll keep these guys on my list as well for possible future work.
Description of Work: Our compressor stopped running. The technician was professional and clearly explained the problem to me. It turns out that the capacitor simply exploded due to the 100 degree heat. It is a small part located on the outside of the compressor. It took him just a few minutes to remove it (since the top completely blew off) and not long to replace it with a new one (which he said he always carries in his truck since this is a commom fix). I asked questions about the system and he patiently explained some things to me and checked a few other items for me which I greatly appreciated. Not sure about the price I paid since he didn't take a long time to do the repair, but I assume it is the going rate for such work since they appear on Angie's list.

A good experience. Jim gave us suggestions on a proper fitting air filter along with quotes for a new unit should this problem rise again. He was knowledgeable and professional and we appreciated his advise. Should we need further work on this unit, we will consider their bid. Jim followed through with a phone call a week later to see how unit was functioning along with updated price quotes for a new unit.

Shaw services assessed my needs and provided a detailed written estaminet on three options (high efficiency, mid level and basic) and this was very helpful in determine the system that would best fit my needs and price point. They also had the best price and Warranty of all the other bids I received from other HVAC vendors. (6 in all ) Don and his crew were very professional and they did an excellent installation job.
