The experience was mixed. The service manager person that I dealt with once was not so good. Ever since then they have been excellent. Overall it was really, really good. I used them again another time because I have a service contract with them. They suggested that they could come out every two weeks and pump my leaking system with more Freon, which I think is an environmental infraction. That was the solution as I understood they were providing and I just thought that was a really bad solution. They also put kind of a full court press sales pitch on me to get me to sign on the dotted line to buy the system. I was not happy about that.
Above & beyond the call of duty.
I purchased the summer comfort special in June/July. Essentially Parrish promises to keep your old HVAC system running over the summer, and then will come out to install a new system in the winter once their techs have less to do. You (the customer) pays for 1/3rd of the system at that time and then pays the balance when they come out to do the final install. I paid about $3,000 initially, and then $5,400 in December. The techs showed up on time (about 8:30am); I let them into my garage but then left to go to work. I returned around noon, and they were still working. Around 3:30pm, Alan Parrish, the President and CEO of the company, showed up to check on his workers and to talk to me about the install. We walked through the house and he provided some suggestions for how to improve the temperature control. He left around 4:20. Around 5pm the techs were doing a final test of the system to make sure everything was good. They encountered a major problem. My furnace is in a storage closet at the back of my garage, so the air intake and exhaust pipes have to run about 40 feet to get to outside air. With 40', it is acceptable to use 2" pipe for the intake and exhaust - which is what was used for my original HVAC system. However, there are 7 x 90degree bends to get from the HVAC to the outside air, and each 90 degree bend counts for an additional 7' of distance because of the drag/resistance. This meant that the air had to travel the equivalent of 89' - and that requires (per building code) 3" diameter pipe. Again, I had 2" diameter pipe. This means the original HVAC system was using the wrong size pipe for the last 15 (the original builder did not put in the right diameter pipe). In order to make sure my HVAC system was operating according to code, the Parrish techs had to replace all of the 2" pipe with 3" pipe, and my basement is completely drywalled! They had to cut holes in the ceiling in order to get to the pipe, had to cut the pipe to the right length, and deal with all the 90 degree bends. Alan Parrish came back out to my house to personally supervise his techs and to help out. All three of them (the 2 techs and Mr. Parrish) were in my garage, working diligently, until 1am!!! The charge for the additional 8 hours of work (5pm to 1am) was $450 - and that included the materials. I'm sure it cost Mr. Parrish much more than that in paying overtime to his techs. Mr. Parrish even called me the next day to make sure everything was OK.
Bottom-line: this company fulfills their responsibilities, makes sure their work is according to code, and charges a *very* reasonable rates. I am very impressed with this level of dedication. Highly recommend this company to others.
Part cost is $7.48 (Home Depot) and takes about 10 minutes labor. Going rate for this repair in NOVA (on the high side) is up to $150.
Parrish Services charged $382.00!!! Cost for repair was not quoted prior to completion and Parrish Services refused to adjust fee upon receipt of my complaint.
The work was done well (at least so far it seems) and quickly. It probably only took the plumber 10 minutes to do the work. It probably just as long for him to write up the invoice.
The invoice was disappointing. It described the work that was performed, but it didn't itemize anything. I understand the service charge was ~$110 (because I didn't want to subscribe to the service plan which would have saved me the service charge). I think the parts required cost about $20. So I got charged $300+ for 20 minutes of labor?
I can't say that I won't use Parrish plumbing again, but they're probably not going to be my first choice. And this little experience is probably going to color my decision when it comes time to renew my HVAC service contract.
