My wife and I decided it was finally time to pave our 300 foot driveway.  I canvassed my neighbors driveways and found some that were very well done.  One which stood out was a 10 year old driveway that looks like it was installed last year. H&H paving had installed it and I called Jerry Holbrook to see if I could get him to come and look at what we had and give us an estimate.  It turns out that Jerry lives within 1 mile of our house and he came the same evening.  The bid that he gave me $15 to 20,000 depending on how much we removed of the tar & chip base, was high enough that we felt we needed to get other estimates.

That was a frustrating process.  I called eight companies some of which were from Angies List.  Four of these companies never called back.  One came out and promised a formal proposal and I never heard from them again.  One came out, actually brought two guys to put together the estimate.  When their estimate came back, a week late, they completely missed an important part of the project , i.e. the need to dig out close to the house so that the drive will have the proper slope away from the house for drainage.   One came back with an estimate almost 2 weeks late late.  One came back with a reasonable estimate but could not do the job because they had only a Virginia Class C license. limiting them to jobs under $3,500.   Had I not asked about it, they probably would have taken the job.  This is something I learned in this process.  Always ask for the Virginia License. This company, however, helped us establish a lower price that we were able to negotiate to with H&H. 

In this process, I went and visited jobs that other companies had done.  One company, the one that botched the bid, did not even respond to my request for sample jobs I could visit.   H&H was able to show me about 10 jobs within 2 miles of my house that were excellent, and comparable to mine. 

We decided to go with H&H and are glad we did.  Jerry Holbrook is one of the most brash,  almost pushy people I have ever met, but having seen his company in action I now realize why he is so proud of his company.  Don't let his constant selling mode throw you off as it almost did me.  Jerry is a true professional and so is everyone he employs. 

I asked him about his employees. Many have been with him for 15, 20 or more years.  He pays his employees year round...this is not something that many paving companies do during the slow winter months.  Consequently he has people who are high skilled and obviously love what they do and are extremely loyal to H&H.   

As I mentioned earlier, a very tricky part of this project was the need to dig out a section in front of the house that ends at the garage.  This area is almost flat and to put a proper 3" asphalt drive in with another 3 to 4 inches of gravel required careful grading.   Jerry assured me that they would get it just right and they did.  Today, the day after the drive was put down, it rained heavily and the drainage is perfect. 

There are no seams in this entire driveway.  No bad spots. The curve is a perfect radius.  The consistency of the asphalt is very good.  The seam where the driveway cuts into the street is straight and cleanly done.  The edges are perfect.  The 45 degree edges by the way are a signature of H&H paved driveways.  I can pick them out any where I go. 

Most of the asphalt paving jobs written up on Angie's List are for $2,000 to $6,000.   I am here to tell you that if you have a larger job like mine, I would not trust it to a smaller paving company.  I have learned just how important it is to get a larger company that has the resources to do a larger driveway.   This means, extra trucks, extra rollers, state of the art asphalt machines and the people to do the job.

My wife and I are pleased with the job H&H did for us and recommend H&H to other Angie's List members, especially if they have a larger driveway like ours.

Jjerry came out and measured the driveway patiently answering my questions.Sent an estimed by mail in three days liked his perposal scheuled a time for the work to be done.Showed up with crew and equimpent right on time.very professional crew. Did a very good job worked well together.nothing but good words for H&H Paving.

My husband I met with several paving companies and received about 6 different estimates.  H&H Paving was the most expensive (the price difference between our lowest bid and the highest was approximately $4000); however, we were drawn to their company because of their professionalism, propt response times, and reliability.  Also, they included their certificate of liability insurance, buiness license, and most importantly a page full of references of previous customers that had their driveways paved with H&H in the past.  The references dated as far back as 2001 and included driveways that were done just a few months before we had ours completed in 2010.  My husband and I were able to drive to the references listed and see that even after 9 years, their driveway was still intact.  I was not at home on the day of the paving, but H&H did call me at work to let me know they arrived and kept me updated with what was going on.  We are very pleased with our beautiful driveway and we will be using H&H this summer to have the sealing completed.

H&H Paving did an outstanding job of paving my long, downhill, driveway in 1999. Now, twelve years later, the driveway is still in excellent condition, with a few small cracks, which H&H repaired today. Prompt, reliable service, and quality work from this company.

Everything went very well. Included was for them to come back and seal the driveway. Only problem I have is the drain does not handle very heavy rains. Small puddle forms over the drain for a couple of hours. Not a deal breaker but that is why I downgraded them on quality.

They also charged me an additional $700.00 to remove the concrete underneath, which I reluctantly paid. The owner's son, Jerry Jr., was arguing with the contractor about the amount of gravel, which was never delivered. The foreman requested an additional 5 tons of asphalt. Jerry Jr. decided that he was just going to make do with what he had, because asphalt was too expensive. They argued about the matter with me listening on the porch, and I wound up with neither gravel nor asphalt. My driveway now has little gullies and ruts in it and is soft when you step on it in certain places. The uncle, Kevin, who originally made the estimate, recognized the problem and said it needed to be fixed. The rest of the company has ignored him, and just made promises that they did not keep. It's been nothing but no call, no show since then. In addition to all of this, they say that they accept Visa and Mastercard, but in reality, they do not.

The salesman/estimator was very professional and promptly gave me and a neighbor bids on our driveways. He also gave us a long list of previous jobs we could go see. The price was slightly higher than one other bidder and about half the price of another bidder who has done a lot of work in the neighborhood. My neighbor and I both decided to go with H&H. The crew came when expected and did both driveways the same day.

Workmen removed old asphalt section, but did not attempt to locate and repair source of settlement. I was able to put my foot in the hole and easily push my foot into the ground to demonstrate the base was not stable. I then took one of their tampers and began tamping the base. Workers completed installing the patch and then laid a very sloppy line of adhesive on the joint. They also buried a sprinker head in asphalt after I showed them where they were and that they functioned. During the course of work, the workers also smoked at the entrace to my garage, distributing smoke into my home.

H&H was very prompt and professional with providing an estimate. They were articulate about what they could and could not do with our driveway. After negotiating a better price than initially quoted, I hired them to replace the driveway. They scheduled my work within a few days of signing the contract. The team arrived and did a very quick and very professional job. The new driveway looks great. They did a fine job cleaning up and even provided a users manual for the new driveway.

I checked out their previous work and everything was pretty good. I also took estimates from other companies. They were the second most expensive, but when they did the work they went down in price. They did a good job. It takes a year or two to know how the work is. However right now it looks good.

They have been very good. They are pleasant. They came in the lowest bid. They are professional. They were good and came out when they were supposed to. They have negotiated well with us.

This experience was really great. Both the owner and the crew that came out were very professional and explained everything that they were doing to us. It only took them one day to finish the job. Their pricing was very good and the quality of work was great as well.

Disappointed. The job was completed by another Angie's List contractor for $2200.00.

Several of us in neighborhood got together to get our driveways repaved in summer of 2005. We selected H&H and all went well. I resurfaced the driveway later that fall as required. This summer was time to reseal it for maintenance. H&H was competitively priced, and very responsive (emailing me quote, handling questions on the phone). I was concerned that would spray oil on stonework or house; the crew was very good and had taped up all key areas. Easy peazy.

They eliminated low spots that caused puddles. The edges are straight and have a nice, defined edge. They were very professional. They came the day they were supposed to and did a good job.

The foreman had trouble speaking and understanding English, which made communicating some special desires difficult. It was not until nearly midway through the job that we discovered a member of the crew could speak and understand English clearly. The front end loader poked a hole in privacy fence (which we were NOT told about; we discovered it when the job was done). The paving crew also left some of their water bottles and other trash on the job site and even left one of the cardboard pieces used to protect our gutters still wrapped around the gutter when they left. The job was done in one day. However, we are still not sure the grading was done to our specifications.

Once we booked the estimate, work began within 2-3 days and the crew was fantastic. They completed work within 2-3 hours and were responsive to my special requests to care for our tree root system and add areas of asphalt which had been compromised or were not part of the original driveway. When I returned home, the entire work area was completely clean and I was very impressed with the final result. Though this company originally told me that they would not come out to my property to perform the work unless they charged me a $5,000 minimum, they did respond favorably and come out to offer an estimate and, eventually, perform the work, thanks to a behind-the-scenes referral from another vendor.

Prompt response from company in request for an estimate. Jerry Holbrook came out, measured drive and described work that would be done. Left a folder, that included information on their license, insurance and a number of addresses, where they've done work (nice touch). When scheduling date for job, Brooke provided information as to what the paving crew would need from us (water source, open garage, etc.) On the day of the job, the crew arrived about an hour early. Foreman Hugo discussed the job with me, as the crew prepped for work. Entire crew attentive to getting job done efficiently and took care with plants, located next to work areas. They were very diligent about clearing the area of debris and extraneous asphalt. The entire job took several hours to complete. Hugo discussed with me not driving on the surface, the next several days and left a booklet describing care of the new driveway. Driveway looks great, I'm quite happy with the end result.

Very well. They arrived with a team of seven along with all the equipment. They worked efficiently and completed the entire job in about two and one-half hours. They were able to shape the driveway in such a way to allow drainage, which it has never had before. They were also exceptional in cleaning up and not damaging the adjacent lawn. Overall, I thought they were outstanding.

The management, J. Holbrook Jr., will do anything to see that payment is made in cash or check rather than by credit card. To this extent the information provided by Angie's list that H&H accepts credit cards is misleading at best and if possible this information should be modified to reflect reality. No mention was made when the contract was signed that there would be a problem with the use of credit and no discussion of payment took place during telephone contact with the office help. However, at the completion of the work, Mr. H insisted that my neighbor and I drive 20 miles to his office in order to use credit. During this conversation he lectured me on the costs he incurs through the use of credit cards and called me a rude customer when I objected to the treatment. He appears further to object to the ability of customers to stop payment by using the card as he wants one to sign a statement that says "Work 100% satisfactory. No refunds. All claims fall under our warranty".

Excellent. Showed up for estimate and day of work. Crew worked diligently and well. Special attention paid to customer's concerns. We hired the company three months later to apply the seal coating. We regularly receive compliments on the appearance of the driveway. So far no problems.

Jerry and his staff were very responsive. Even with a discount offered, it was more expensive than another estimate. Also, was concerned re grading because we did not want water in garage. He said I would need a drain, but he could not put one in, it would cost about $1500 more, and he did not know who I could get to do the work. The cost of both would have been much too high so we went with another contractor who was able to grade the driveway without our needing a drain.

Prompt response, work finished within two weeks of call. Estimator was prompt, workman did an excellent job.

Overall pleased, but .....I was not informed of having to be present for the job until I received a surprise call at work from the company indicating they could not start the job until I was present so I immediately departed work for home. Upon arrival they had already removed all existing asphalt and laid the sub-grade material. The crew was large and efficient with their work (2.5 hour job). The surface & edges looked excellent at the time of completion; the job site was left very clean before their departure. One issue I discovered following cure time (1 week). I noticed a significant imperfection(lengthwise indentation from the rolling machine); a depression noticeable at certain angles of view, and definitely noticeable when walked on (a slight hump). The company President apologized and chose to compensate us with a discounted sealing job in one year and suggested repairing the imperfection would only make the finish worse. We will receive $100 off a $300 sealing job.

I was very pleased with their work. I obtained three estimates and theirs was the middle estimate, but they also proposed doing a better job on the property -- putting down more asphalt than the cheapest bid. They were very professional and the driveway turned out beautifully. It was a tough driveway, with curves and a very steep hill section.
