Description of Work: This company did some very nice work for us in 2014 and we had asked for help with a simple spring garden cleanup in the spring of 2015 - requested in May and not completed until After July 4. We had hopes at that time of using them for a major re landscaping project in the fall but have since decided against it. We have been disappointed with miscommunications, poor responsiveness on bids (the owner came out to estimate the back yard segment of the project but never sent us a bid), and the long time lapse between a simple request for a garden cleanup and the project's start and completion. This gap was especially irksome because the deposit amount (1/2 total cost) made it impossible to back out when it became clear that the project would not get done on time. We understand outdoor projects can be delayed by weather, but after significant delays on the requested spring clean-up (we needed it done before 4 July) and a personal promise from the company owner that the work would definitely be done before the holiday, we were ultimately told that it actually would not get done in time. We had to canceled the plans for the holiday gathering. The work was eventually done exceptionally well, however. And for that we were thankful. The owner offered to refund some money on the matter related to miscommunication, but we declined to take it. The owner seems like a fine person. I hope the issues he has with scheduling can be resolved.

Description of Work: We hired this company to provide us with a landscape plan for our garden. This company was fairly new at the time, I am guessing at the approximate date. As we knew absolutely nothing about gardening, and had purchased the home a few years prior, we inherited plants and flowers we knew nothing about. We requested that the plan incorporate existing shrubbery, bulbs, and perennials. We also asked for the references. We were provided with 6-8 names and addresses in our area, and we visited some of them. The plan was professional and comprehensive, and though some of the areas have changed over the years, my husband still uses it as a reference tool. We were very pleased with the professionalism, courtesy, and price of English Country Gardens.

We thought English Country Gardens' creativity was wonderful and appreciated their professionalism, punctuality and oversight of the entire project from start to finish. Peter and his crew was equally professional. They asked us our thoughts on positing the bushes and trees, the mulch line and overall balance of the yard. We felt included throughout the entire process and we love the final result. They went above and beyond with the design, extra edging and mulching just to make it look good, no extra charge. From the secretary in the office, to the owner and entire crew they were punctual, professional and knew their profession well. We look forward to doing more work with them.
Description of Work: Planted a beech tree, 2 big holly bushes, and 4 other large shrubs in our back yard. Mulched a big piece of our back yard, edged around shrubs and tree, gave a creative and classy look. Dug out all our stumps at no extra charge.

I received a prompt response to my inquiry and was able to set up an appointment for evaluating the job and providing an estimate the next weekend. The designer arrived on time for the appointment, evaluated the site, provided a sketch of the work, description of materials, notional schedule, a price for the wall, and a price for the walk. The price was competitive with other estimates. Communication was satisfactory and the company's qualifications were exemplary, however the detail provided in the proposal was not to my expectations.
Description of Work: I contacted English Country Gardens to obtain a quote to replace a 70' long by 4' high timber retaining wall behind my home with a concrete block wall, and replace the paver walk and brick front stoop.

Our job went very well from beginning to end. Pete designed a beautiful new backyard for us. He offered a detailed sketch so we could see exactly what would be done. It was just what I asked for. When the work started all the workmen were very professional and very nice. They answered all my questions and concerns. They were even nice about making small changes to make some improvements. They leveled the yard with timbers, built a proper base and installed a beautiful slate patio with plantings around the edges. They then mulched the whole yard, weeded other beds and planted some more ground-cover where needed. We could not be more pleased with the work they did. It is beautiful and now very usable.I highly recommend Pete and the English Country Garden Landscapers and will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Re-landscaped our back yard. The yard needed to be leveled so a new retaining wall was built with landscaping timbers. They filled it in with soil and gravel to make a proper base. They then installed a slate patio and numerous plantings. I was exactly what I asked them to do.Pete was the designer and he was terrific. He listened to all my requests and concerns and applied it all perfectly. I could not be happier!

My wife and I choose to work with English Country Gardens over other landscape companies because of owner/operator Peter Field. Peter impressed us with his landscape design, particularly his plant selection, and his willingness to answer our many questions and respond in a very timely manner. We must note that when English Country Gardens began work we encountered a few hiccups such as, plant sizes were smaller than initially planned and all plants were not immediately available. When we expressed our disappointment to Peter, he responded by going beyond our expectations – including ordering larger replacement plants and adding additional plants. Peter took these actions without our asking and totally surprised us; not something we feel other companies would do. We especially appreciate the excellent work done by Tyler and Margarito, one of the crews that worked on our project. English Country Gardens did not disappoint and we would use them again!
Description of Work: English Country Gardens recently finished a landscaping project at our residence that included, re-landscaping the front beds with new plants, transplanting several large azalea shrubs and hostas from the front beds to the back, creating a dry creek with existing stones, repairing our front brick walkway, and planting new shrubs in the back yard.

I found them on Angies' list, and they were one of two estimates. Pete, the owner, arranged a time for a visit online. He was very quick with responding all along. He came out and heard what we had in mind, but we really wanted his input on how we could improve the yard. He suggested a retaining wall, with drought resistant plants in the front. We wanted a new lawn, and he priced both seeding and sodding. Pete said that our side yard was functional, and he didn't see how we needed to change that a lot. He was very considerate of our budget, and always had separate pricing for us to consider. In the back yard, he said we could extend the existing patio out into the trees, with a curve, and redo the sinking slab and cut a curve to blend in with the basket ball court concrete slab, which was still in good condition. He suggested plants for the slope, and considered which plants would work in sunny areas. Pete then emailed his estimate, we asked for the Angie's list coupon, and it was applied. We visited his nursery and looked at the plants he was recommending and asked questions about their placement in the yard. We looked at the different pavers available, and he gave us catalogs to see all the colors and styles of walls and patios. We agreed to do it all at once, on credit cards (airline miles, you know), half down to start, then the last half after the job was complete. He dropped off samples of stone so we could decide which color we wanted. There was a two day delay because of rain, but the crew showed up on Wednesday and immediately started to cut the trenches for the wall in the front. The foreman was Jose, he was excellent: creative, polite, hard working and intent on doing a solid and attractive job. His crew ranged from two to four, depending on what was being done. (Extra people for planting or mulching, fewer for the stone work). They placed the front wall over several days, gluing it together, you can walk all over it. The whole process took about three weeks and few days. They carefully places all the stone, cut the concrete and it looks wonderful. The curved patio in back is amazing, sturdy and beautiful. Jose said that if the sand between the stones fails, he will come out and redo it. There is a warranty on the plants for one year. All the work was done well, with more than we had asked for. It was hot, and they certainly worked hard. They arrived at 10AM and left around 5:30 PM. They never came in the house, but accepted water and drinks from us. We are very pleased with the results, It was more money that was had anticipated, but in this case, we really got what we paid for. Our neighbors are amazed with how different it looks, and we just have to smile when we sit on the patio or drive up and see the new wall and plants. I highly recommend English Country Gardens. Pete and Jose were professional, communicative and full of good ideas. I would use them again.
Description of Work: They built a curving retaining wall in our front yard, about 60 ft long, with our choice of Nicolock stone and capstones. Tree roots were trimmed, sloping front yard was graded, top soil added, plants installed, stepping stones were placed for the watering faucet and gate to the back yard, and everything was mulched. Then they trimmed the front bushes, took out the old lawn and replaced with sod. A small wall was added around the front walkway to keep soil from washing away. In the back, they took up old rock pavers and built a new, extended patio with a small wall to hold the patio on the slope, and installed a new patio, 6 ft into the trees. It is curved beautifully, with capstones on the edge for a finished look. They also replaced the old rotted landscaping timbers with a stone edge, with capstones, along both beds. This was done even though we had just asked for the landscaping timbers, to save costs. But, Jose, the foreman, said the stone would look better, and he was right. They also added a step from the side yard to the new patio, so that soil wouldn't wash away. They placed a large stone by the fishpond so that it blended in with the new patio. They buried the drainpipe under the stones. They replaced a sinking concrete pad by the sliding doors with the same pavers they used for the patio, correcting the slope so that water will drain away from the house. They cut the existing remaining concrete slab with a saw so that it curves into the new pavers. They added a step from the new stone edging to the existing brick steps. They also mulched the beds and trimmed the bushes in them. With the extra sod they sodded a patch by the new patio where the wheelbarrows had made a rut. On a slope in the back yard, they removed the sod, planted bushes and mulched the ground and placed landscaping timbers to outline the bed.

When the truck came to deliver the mulch, he backed into a fence post and split it. Before the driver dumped the mulch, he called in and advised the office what had happened, they said not to take a check from me, that they wanted to discount my order. He proceeded to take pictures of the post, and then dumped the mulch. Within 2 days, after the holiday weekend, they contacted me and fixed the fence post, better than it was when they hit it! They also wanted to give me a $100 discount, I didn't want to take the discount because it was just an accident, however, when I went up to pay for the mulch, I asked them instead of the discount, could I have a half a yard of mulch, which they placed in the bed of my truck and insisted that I accept a beautiful Geranium hanging plant. They were extremely polite and took care of it immediately.
Description of Work: I had originally ordered mulch to be delivered and dumped. The driver accidentally hit the fence post as he was backing in resulting in the post being split.

We only wanted about $3,000 worth of work. She did charge us $105 to come out and look. I thought that was fine. She gave us a plan for the front, side, and back yard. She told us we could do it ourselves, or we could hire her. She drew up the plans to include to include the trees that we already had too. My wife took some before and after photos and we could tell that she did a really good job. People say that they really love our landscaping and we tell them who we went to. She will incorporate what you do and don't like. They also have several flowers and plants that I have never seen before. Our neighbor told us that he liked they way our yard looks now. She did an excellent job and had a good plan. She did not want to cut down any of our trees.

The quality of the work was very good and I have been very happy with the wall. There was a small problem with regards to the patio, as the grout was coming out, so it me a few phone calls to have them fix it. So I would not say they were super responsive, but I was very happy with the design and everything else. I will use them again in the future.

l I had experienced rain water coming into my basement laundry room, and I contacted Pete at English Country Gardens to determine the cause of the leakage. Pete carefully examined my front yard and basement, and identified a couple of problem areas: 1) that my downspout was allowing water to pool in one section in my front yard, and 2) that an animal had dug a hole near my front porch which was allowing the pooled water to leak into my basement. He also noted that I had just replaced my gutters, and the rain water it collected was adding to the standing water in one area of the front yard. The actual work on my yard was delayed due to the heavy rains our area had in November and December, but Pete's workers came and completed the work in one day. So far I have not experienced any further water coming into my basement. While I had other landscapers examine my front yard, only Pete was able to figure out the cause of my problem. He listened to me, make a careful examination of the yard and basement, and then came up with a workable solution. I would not hesitate to use his services again in the future.
Description of Work: In my townhouse front yard, they re-directed a downspout into a 3' by 3' pit (that they dug) filled with gravel and water absorbing fabric. On the top of the pit they placed a pop up drain, which allows any water overflow to be distributed evenly over the yard. They also dug 2' down around my porch stoop, and packed it with gravel and fabric. They placed topsoil and mulch over all of it.

We had good results through them. Most of it I thought was very good. The work they did was excellent. Sometimes we had a hard time getting hold of them on the phone. That would be the only thing I would say was a negative. However, the work they did was very good. I would use their services again in the future.

The overall experience was very good. The project started out much smaller than it ended up. We originally were just going to take care of the erosion issues, but once Pete and his team got on site and we saw the quality of the work, we expanded our ideas. Pete and his team were wonderfully responsive to our changes--they were always on time and very courteous. Even though we spent more than we had planned, we feel that we got more than what we paid for.
Description of Work: The project entailed fixing up the yard of a home that had been rented for 25 years. Work included complete resodding of the front and side yards, regrading to fix erosion problems, and building some beds for plantings along the walk and the foundation of the home. The work also include plantings and mulch work in the beds.

We called English Country Gardens and requested someone come out to give us an estimate on some work that we wanted done around our home. Pete came by, listened to our suggestions, looked at the front and rear of the house and departed. Later that evening, he emailed us sketches of what we wanted along with the price. We asked if he would be willing to discount his price, and he did. Within a couple weeks, the crew came to our home and began work. They installed two retaining walls and pavers for the patio in the back yard. They installed plants and put down a gravel drive as well. Once they were completed, they updated our front walkway and front porch. Plants were also installed along with a small retaining wall at the front of the house. Each day they covered everything to ensure nothing would be disturbed and looked nice and neat. The lead foreman (Jose) would always meet me with a smile and would explain how the job was going. He was very courteous and took time to explain what had been done, and what the next steps were. I am very satisfied with the work they performed and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: We have lived in our home for approximately 13 years and have just "kept it up". We decided to re-seed the yard and have a patio and front porch built to add to the curb appeal. English Country Gardens came out and with several loads of top soil, grass seed and straw. They covered our entire yard with 1' of top soil, seeded the area, then covered it with straw. A couple weeks later they came out and installed two retaining walls and a patio in the rear of the house, and "updated" our front porch. Plants were also installed around the front and rear of the home.

Nice guy, showed up on time. Knowledgeable about plants. Extensive book of work. The quote that I was given did not include any plants, just stone walls. When we pushed back on the price, we were told there was another type of stone available, and he would get us a price, but he did not follow up with this information. We were not given a written estimate or anything in writing, some doodles were made when the measurements were done but they all went with him when he left. The walls would have been beautiful, but they would also have been totally out of step with the house, current fencing, etc. Maybe I am being short-sighted, but I keep hoping I'll find a landscaper who will try to blend their work in with what we have rather than putting something in that will stick out and blare that it's different.

A guy came out and provided no details at all. He drew a rough sketch on a piece of scratch paper and he wouldn't give me a copy of it. He didn't even write down the names of the plants. I assumed it would be in his quote, but all I got was a piece of scratch paper with the number $6,000 written on it. No details as to how he arrived at that number, i.e, how much is labor, plants, what plants he recommends, etc. He avoided giving me specific answers about the project. His bid included installing a new brick path and stoop - instead of simply laying over the concrete. He didn't provide that as an option. I assume because he makes more money buy demolishing the concrete and installing the brick. Very unprofessional quote on a project. Meeting with this company was a waste of time. I understand the company's need to not have it's ideas stolen. If so, they should say the free quote does not include a written estimate and charge customers for a formal, written estimate.
