Outstanding job. Art was right on time to look at the project and provided a prompt estimate. The crew did an effective and efficient job. They had all the right equipment and materials. No problems whatsoever.

Fantastic work. They had a crew that knew what they were doing and the work was done on time & on budget. In fact, there was a measuring error during the estimate that did not account for approximately 30 feet of asphalt. This was not an error on my part, rather than it being written incorrectly on the contract. When Brian the foreman arrived (Art's son), he advised that the error would be something we'd need to straighten out before starting, which was completely understandable and acceptable. He got on the phone with Art, explained the discrepancy, determined that it was an oversight on the part of Chesapeake, and told me they would do the entire job (including the extra 30') for the originally quoted price. There was no bitterness or resentment at all. The proceeded with professionalism and efficiency. They made sure there was no seam between the layers, addressed a unique grading issue to maximize rainwater draining (at least they told me they would...apparently not), and upon completion, the crew cleaned up after themselves. I would absolutely recommend them to all of my neighbors and would use them again without a second thought. ***** UPDATE from Summer 2015 **** The driveway installed has failed in several locations, again. They came out in Apr 2013 to fix a section under warranty that had failed, but this same section has failed again. I corresponded no less than 15 times; 12 emails & 3 phone calls (Apr 2015 - Jun 2015), with the owner and they refuse to come fix the failed section. They maintain that "I" didn't properly grade the area of yard that was paved over, AFTER the install, and that is what caused the failure. Twice! Email response from Art Baker @ Chesapeake 4 Jun 2015: "When the driveway was originally installed it was designed to drain at the lowest point which is the area you are having a problem with. You will continue to have problems with the Asphalt until you create drainage in your yard". I have a photo that was sent to Chesapeake on 8 Jun 2015 of my driveway in the middle of a moderate rain. The photo clearly shows that the pooling of water is about 2 feet BEFORE the edge of the driveway even comes in contact with the already down sloped yard. So I ask any reasonable reader of this post, wouldn't you think that if water is pooling before it gets to the edge of a driveway, it would have something to do with the application and grading of the base material and asphalt? I have tried to post this picture to this website, but have been unable to discover how to do that. I maintain that if Chesapeake was doing all of the grading with the heavy equipment during the initial install, how the heck would I be responsible for grading a section of yard that had just been paved over?!?! I went back & forth for several weeks with the owner, Art, and received absolutely no resolution. My initial ratings for price & punctuality remain as "A's". However, everything else goes to an F. I am shocked and appalled that this company would not stand behind their work. My particular driveway has a minimal grade to it anyway, but according to TWO other paving companies that I have had come over to evaluate the failure and provide a recommendation of repair, "the company that installed this driveway did not put the appropriate grading on the slope of the driveway and clearly did not apply a substantial enough base material to support the driveway. I guess there was a reason why Chesapeake was cheaper than some of the other paving companies. You get what you pay for. In my case, a driveway that collects water due to poor installation, and is slowly deteriorating right before my eyes. The only resolution would be to have a different company come in and tear up this area and do it correctly. Objectively, I do not believe the driveway is in need of this right now, but will definitely need to have a repair done in another year or two. I would absolutely NOT recommend Chesapeake Paving due to the failure of the quality of work and/or them standing behind their product in the face of obvious deficiency.
Description of Work: Tear out existing 20x60' asphalt driveway, level new base, reinstall. In addition, add new 9x90' asphalt driveway parallel to existing one, that goes alongside house into back yard for boat storage.

We found this company on Angie's List. The owner responded promptly and an appointment was set to examine our driveway and provide an estimate. Art is extremely knowledgeable. He fully explained what needed to be done to the driveway. We accepted the estimate. The crew arrived promptly. They were very courteous, friendly, and professional. The gentleman in charge of the crew thoroughly explained the process to me. They did a fantastic job! We could not be more pleased. They get an A+ from us!

Exceptional Chesepeake gave us a quote in 2010 but we were not ready to proceed. I asked if the quote was still valid in November 2011. They responded that asphalt prices had increased since the original quote but they would split the difference. It was raining on our first scheduled day and they promptly called to reschedule for the next day. The team arrived on time with all of their equipment on the next day. I talked through the plan for re-shaping the driveway with the supervisor. They completed the work and cleaned up in a very professional manner. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Chesepeake Paving removed existing driveway and replaced the existing driveway including widening/reshaping the driveway. The reshaping was beneficial because the driveway is not straight and is on a hill.

Chesapeake Paving crew of 5 arrived early with all the proper equipment to complete the job. They were very good at explaining what they planned to do regarding grading and dimensions. They worked smoothly as a team, answered all of my many questions, and were extremely professional yet congenial. Work was satisfactorily completed in several hours, site was cleaned up, and I am very happy with their results and workmanship.
Description of Work: Chesapeake Pavers extended our driveway in order for us to park an additional family car. They excavated the area, graded, applied crushed stone as a base, and installed a 12' X 20' (approximate) blacktop pad that abutted our existing driveway.

I had received several quotes to replace our 17 year-old driveway and repair the foundation; all were very similar. I chose Chesapeake because of their reviews on Angie's list and they are a local company. They were very prompt, courteous, and professional in all aspects of their work. They arrived when they said they would, explained exactly what they were going to do, and then did it. The best part (other than the quality of their work) was their clean-up; it was perfect. I had heard of nightmares from neighbors who had used other companies but Chesapeake left the site immaculate. On time, on budget, and no worries... what else could you ask for.
Description of Work: They removed our old driveway, repaired a portion that had been sinking since new, re-graded the bed, and installed a new, slightly wider asphalt driveway.

I couldn't ask for a better job or more pleasant experience. Art Baker was came to the house to give me an estimate several days after I called. Once I selected Chesapeake to do the work, they were prompt in scheduling the job, showed up on time, worked professionally until the job was complete, and cleaned up afterward. Art stopped in to make sure the job was done right and I was happy with results.

I left a voice message with Chesapeak Paving and Art Baker called me the same day and we scheduled him to come out and give me an estimate that same week. Chesapeak was the 2nd of 3 companies I had give me estimates. My neighbor had resurfaced his driveway and I was originally asking for estimates for just a drive way topper. The other two companies gave me estimates for just what I asked for, but Art Baker suggested re-doing the entire driveway. His price was the highest, but only by $400. It just made more sense to do a new driveway when you consider that your problems could very well be your base underneath the asphalt. He said he could do a topper, but wouldn't recommend it. My driveway is on a hill and was in worse shape then my neighbors that just had a topper or resurface put on their existing and relatively flat driveway. Art's team showed up on the job at 8 am and began work promptly. I had to go into the office that morning and when I returned home at 11:30 the entire driveway had been removed and they were just finishing compacting the base. The asphalt arrived moments later and they began paving. I remember being impressed with the equipment used for this job and the large professional crew that did the work. I remeber thinnking that they must be done, but they kept going over the driveway with the roller and continuously tamped the edges - over and over again - even though I thought the job was done an hour earlier. I'm real pleased with the my driveway and have already referred my neighbor to Chesapeak Paving who intends to redo his this spring.
Description of Work: I contracted with Chesapeak Paving to remove and haul away my eleven year old asphalt driveway and replace it with a new asphalt driveway. That included rolling and compacting the subbase, grading the driveway to produce a solid 4" base, paving the driveway with 3" of VDOT approved asphalt and hand tamping the edges to a 45 degree angle.

The service provided by Chesapeake was excellent in every respect. They responded quickly to my request for an estimate and were punctual in meeting me to discuss the work to be performed. Their price was slightly less than the other bid I received. They were able to get me on their schedule quickly, and the work was completed within a day as they had explained to me. They did an excellent job, and I am very happy with the results. I recommend them highly to others looking to have work done on an asphalt driveway.

The entire process of working with Chesapeake - from the initial estimate to the final job was excellent. There was a concrete apron in front of the garage that had to be replaced before the driveway could be replaced -- Chesapeake accommodated that process and our schedule without any problems. The paving crew was excellent in all aspects of the job. The took care when removing the old asphalt and with completing the new driveway, including finishing the edges and the seam next to the concrete apron. We were thoroughly pleased with the entire process.

The overall experience was excellent. The estimate was performed promptly within 24 hours of placing the initial call. Their estimate came in $700 below another well respected company. The job was not simple because we live on a hill and there is a significant slope up to the garage. The morning that the work was performed I met briefly with two of the employees to discuss details of the work. I was interested in smoothing out the entry to the driveway since cars normally bottomed out when entering because of the sharp incline. We also had a pad next to the garage as part of the driveway, which was very uneven and needed to be flattened out. Chesapeake did a great job with both details, smoothing the entry and regrading and flattening the pad next to the garage. There were no imperfections in the surface at all and the asphalt met up perfectly with the newly built wall around the driveway.

Asked them to call to make an appointment when they could come out to do the estimate so that the other homeowners could be there. Without an appointment, we found someone looking over the area on March 25 to provide an estimate. He was very pleasant and answered a few questions. I obtained his business card. When I did not hear anything further, I sent a message to the email on the business card. The email was returned as undeliverable. The crew arrived on time, verified the dimensions and set about tearing out the driveway. They estimated that it would take 4 and half hours, and they finished nearly on the dot. The driveway is gorgeous, and I think time will tell, that it was expertly installed.
Description of Work: Chesapeake Paving dug out and repaved 120 sq. yds of a 12 year old asphalt driveway. We had received other bids, and those companies came in around the same price or cheaper. The estimates were for cutting out sunken sections, and repairing down to the base only as necessary. Entire driveway replacement bids were much higher than Chesapeake's. On that basis, I went with them in addition to other Angie List recommendations.

The crew arrived on time and began their work. Everything ran smoothly, they had many people and trucks that everything was done in a very professional manner. The driveway looks wonderfull. All edges meeting the concrete apron as well and the slate entry are contiguous - as though everything was done at the same time. I would not hesitate to use this company again.
Description of Work: They dug out and removed existing asphalt driveway. Everything was hauled away. They also added width to the drive way and so removed grass and dirt to the new width at the center point of the driveway. They tappered out to the entrances and matched heigth to concrete apron/side walk. New driway was graded, gravel was added and compacted. Driveway was them paved with asphalt, edges were tamped and finished.

Of the two top paving companies in the area, I prefer Chesapeake. Their price was less than half that of their competitor and they were far more responsive. Mr. Baker and I discussed the project both on the phone and in person. The crew arrived on time on the scheduled date. All Chesapeake staff were pleasant, efficient and professional. The crew did a great job cleaning up afterward, and they even made a neat looking pile of the earth that was removed when making our semicircular driveway. It's been over a month. No complaints about the driveway at all--no puddles, no sagging, no cracking. So far it's good stuff. As a new homeowner this is one of the best experiences I've had with a contracting company. They tell it to you straight, and they get their work done fast. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: GRADE EXISTING DRIVEWAY (152 sq yds) ADDING 21-A STONE AS/IF NEEDED ROLLING & COMPACTING TO PRODUCE A SOLID BASE FOR PAVING. 18' X 76' REMOVE GRASS AND DIRT TO DESIRED DEPTH IN FRONT TO CREATE A SEMI-CIRCULAR DRIVEWAY CONNECTING ONTO THE MAIN DRIVE. 12' X 80'. ALL DIRT AND GRASS TO STAY ONSITE. THEN STONE AREA WITH 3"-4" ROLL AND COMPACT, PREP FOR PAVING (107 sq yds) PAVE COMPLETE DRIVEWAY AND SEMI-CIRCLE WITH 3'' OF V-DOT APPROVED ASPHALT GRADE SM-9.5A AND ROLL VIA VIBRATORY MACHINE TO COMPACT. EDGES ARE HAND TAMPED TO A 45 DEGREE FOR SUPPORT. (259 sq yds) Above is our estimate. The semicircular drive ended up being nearly 15 feet shorter than originally estimated, but we did widen the straightaway portion another 2 feet. So we ended up paying just a hair less than the estimate.

I decided last year to pave my driveway. I got an off the cuff estimate last year for $13K and that was too much money. With the heavy snow this winter, I found it very difficult to clear the driveway due to the fact that it was no paved. In April, I used Angie's List to find a local company to do an estimate. They responded with the estimate the same day, contracted with them based on the estimate and they paved the driveway within the next week, on schedule. The work was done well and I've had several neighbors ask who performed the work.

Installation of a foundation layer of gravel including compaction of the gravel. Installed the new three inch layer of hot asphalt and compact the surface. Our experience with Chesapeake Paving was one of the best customer service experiences I've had in a very long time. Their crew of six men arrived promptly on the day we'd arranged, and they were here for almost twelve hours that day, removing our old driveway, recutting the contours for the new driveway, laying gravel and spreading asphalt. Finally, as sunset was approaching, Brian (the project manager) came to my door and said that after all the work they'd put into the driveway, he wasn't happy with the results because the last batch of asphalt they'd received from the distributor wasn't up to their standards. He told me they were going to come back the following week, take out the whole driveway and do it all over again with a different batch of asphalt. Sure enough they did, and it looks great. We were so impressed with their commitment to giving us a high quality product. I have no idea what a "good" driveway should look like, and they could easily have fooled me into thinking the first driveway was acceptable. They seem to have very high standards and a commitment to making it right. The Chesapeake crew also attended to a number of other meticulous details, like moving our sprinkler heads when they changed the lines of the driveway, curving the lines of the driveway around an oak tree, and adjusting the paving stones on our walkway so that they'd be level with the driveway when they finished it. They ran water over the driveway to make sure it was draining properly -- our property is on a slope so that was a little tricky -- and adjusted the surface to cause the runoff to move away from the house. Their workers were unobtrusive and did a great job of cleaning up when they finished. Really great experience.
