Unlike the competition, the Chesapeake sales rep called me back quickly and was on site to provide an estimate the next day. The price was very fair and they had a good reputation, so we signed up for the work, which was then scheduled to take place in about two weeks. They showed up on time on the scheduled day and proceeded to get the job done. When they had an issue with part of the driveway that was unanticipated when they bid on the job, they explained why there was an issue and went out of their way to reach a very fair resolution. The whole job took one day. The work was excellent and all of the workers were very polite and professional. I would definiately use them again.

We were pleased with the representative's responsiveness and professionalism, and with the estimate. We simply decided to use another company . . . essentially on a figurative coin toss. We would not hesitate to recommend this company given our limited experience with its rep.

They gave me a very competitive bid but I never executed on it because I sold the rental property. They were very straightforward and certainly in the market in terms of the other competitors. The estimator was very professional. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted without me actually saying that they needed to fix this and that. He talked about fixing the edges. He was very knowledgeable. He gave me an estimate on the spot. I would recommend them.

Chesapeake paving came out 3 times to pave. The first time the material was not available due to the asphalt supplier. They were very apologetic and we rescheduled. The second time the asphalt was not the correct type. They could have just paved and I would not have known but they are very professional. The even had all the equipment and peple there to work. Third time everything worked out. They did an excellent job and even corrected the water drain off so what happened to the first driveway wouldn't Happen again. Very punctual and professional. Really knows their business.

Chesapeake Paving for asphalt driveways. It went okay. I didn't like the fact that they sent one guy out, the estimator to give me one price and then the owner of the company came out and the original guy that came out, the estimator said to do it one way and then the other guy he was going to do it another way. There was some disagreement about how much it was going to cost. They charged me the same price which I felt it was less materials. We eventually talked and we worked that out. He went on and did it for the price because the original estimator said he wanted to take out a part, the bad part of the driveway, but the owner came and said no we can do that without taking it all out. But he was still charging me the same. So I thought if you are using less materials it should have been less money. He explained that something about the consistency of the driveway and blah, blah, blah. They used asphalt. It cost us about $1300. It was last fall. October around there. The quality of work is good but they have a subcontractor, somebody that does the work for them. And I'm still looking for them to come back and finish some work they didn't finish up. Over all I was okay, I was pleased with them.

They were very thorough, efficient (took about 5.5 hrs), and professional. The gentleman managing the project for the day was receptive to our additional requests and made solid recommendations. The quote came in $300-$500 more than another company's, but the fact that they also offered to redo my front walkway, which needed to be re-done anyway, without me initially requesting it was greatly appreciated and made the slightly higher cost well worth it.
Description of Work: We had a combination of concrete slabs and bricks functioning as a "driveway" that were sunken into the ground. Chesapeake came out within 2 weeks of the quote and tore out all the old concrete and bricks and laid a 50 ft asphalt driveway.

During the initial estimate, Chesapeake Paving discussed the removal and reinstallation of the driveway along with some of the options, issues, suggestions and contingencies that were unique to my particular driveway layout. Their price was not the cheapest estimate I received, but they were the most clear about the physics of the slope and driveway foundation conditions with relation to time, weather and usage. They showed up on time, they were polite and communicated perfectly. It was obvious that they are experts as they moved quickly in close proximity to the house, lawn and walkways with large machines without damaging anything. If you are thinking about expanding your driveway during the repavement, don't ask them to push back the dirt onto your existing lawn as I did, you will be better off to have them dump the dirt and sod in a pile so that you can sort it out/regrade at your leisure without affecting your existing grass.

They cleaned up, gave me general care instructions and we were done.

Removal of previous asphault and re-paving was completed in 1 day. Workers arrived on time and worked until dusk to complete the project. The end result is beautiful. Prior to the work, the driveway was sagging and breaking in some places. Chesapeake removed the entire area of asphalt and re-paved the area correctly. Everything was on schedule, the workers were courteous and professional. The "seam" where old and new pavement meet is smooth. The driveway is smooth and perfect. there is no puddling of water when it rains. It looks fantastic! I will call them back when it's time to seal it. .
Description of Work: Driveway expansion, asphalt. We added 6-8 feet to the end of a driveway including a turn-around apron. Chesapeake was sub-contracted through the King's Mason's who designed, built retaining wall and oversaw the project. the previous drive was removed and re-paved.

Chesapeake Paving Company is a family-owned and family operated business. Chesapeake Paving removed all of the asphalt from our relatively long driveway, laid a new base and then poured new asphalt on top of the base. Our property is full of marine clay which is constantly expanding and contracting based on the water level in the ground. Consequently, our new driveway began to develop several cracks in various locations along the driveway. Even though Chesapeake Paving is not responsible for cracks caused by shifting earth, they revisited our property twice to fix the cracks. What impressed me most about Chesapeake Paving is their follow-through. When cracks started appearing in other areas of the driveway for a second time, I reported this issue to Chesapeake Paving. Art Baker responded and stated in September that they would be out to fix the cracks before winter. I did not have to call to remind him. He emailed me to set up a time to fix the cracks and they arrived on schedule. Even though the marine clay issue is not their problem, they worked with us twice to fix the cracks caused by the unstable-marine-clay- ridden ground. If you need a new driveway, this is the company you want to use. They gave us the best price and they were extremely responsive to our needs and concerns when they really did not have to be.

The crew arrived on time and the foreman stayed with the job the entire day. They were courteous and careful of the garage and the surrounding shrubs. The foreman worked with me to ensure that the edges of the widened part of the driveway were in the location I wanted. Overall the driveway has a good appearance except for an area that is a darker color. Also, I have found random chunks of ceramic tile in the shrubbery beds adjacent to the driveway, which makes me wonder what was in the gravel base. Also, bits of very tough wire have appeared poking out of the asphalt and can only be trimmed back flush to the surface using heavy duty wire cutters. At the end of the job, I had to ask the crew to remove a pile of dirt they had pushed into the ivy at the bottom of the driveway. They did remove most of the dirt but later I found large chunks of asphalt in that spot. Since this is the first asphalt driveway I have had installed so I don't know if the tile and the wire are unusual or not. Since I have not had the time to call and ask, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and rated them A on quality.
Description of Work: The 70 foot asphalt driveway at my house was removed down to the base, additional gravel was installed, and new asphalt was applied over the base. The area at the top of the driveway was widened to meet up with an existing walkway next to the garage. The whole job took one day.

The estimator was very willing to work with me to lower the cost by not tearing out areas that were still serviceable, etc. They were on time, and completed the work in one day as estimated. They did a perfect job of making sure all areas drained properly, taking care of roots that had pushed up the old driveway, making sure the surface was as smooth as possible, and tying it in with the street paving. The foreman/owner was very knowledgeable, spent extra time with me explaining things and telling me how to take care of it in the first weeks, and when and how to seal it.

I have to say, working with Chesapeake was one of the best experiences I ever had with a contractor. From the initial meeting with Ed, the estimator, everyone I dealt with was top-notch in every regard. I had 3 estimates on repaving my drive, and Chesapeake came in under the other 2 by a fair amount. They're a local, family-owned company, and residential work is their bread and butter, as opposed to many of the larger companies that do residential work more as a "filler" for when there's a lull between commercial jobs. Brian and his crew showed up precisely when they said they would, and started work as quickly as they could unload their equipment. Ed had communicated the scope of the job well enough, they knew precisely what needed to be done without having to ask. There was a fair bit of soil to be removed from the front yard, so they began there, knowing the fill could be used in the back yard. After removing the plantings and a small tree stump, they cut a nice, gentle slope from the house to the street; even without grass, it looked fantastic. The rear yard was a bit more of a challenge, but the skid loader operator could see a small swale would work perfectly to divert the water from all running to the rear of the house. He created one small enough to hardly be noticeable, but as today's weather will attest, does it's job perfectly. Once the front and rear yards were done, out came the old asphalt (50+ years old) and they slightly recontoured the driveway bed for better water flow. That was followed by a 3"+ bed of gravel, which was then compacted. Since this was planned as a 2 day job, that wrapped up day one. The following morning, they got to work almost immediately with actually laying the asphalt, which looks incredible, and again, given the tropical storm raging as I write this, does a fantastic job of diverting the water out to the street. I was home both days, and never once did Brian or any of his crew hesitate to answer any questions I had, even those simply about the mechanics of what they were doing. When they were finished, and Brian and I were both happy with the job, everything was cleaned up and looked better than when they got here! Without writing the Great American Novel, let me sum up the job this way: Chesapeake says exactly what they'll do, then does exactly what they said. I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to anyone I meet.
Description of Work: Chesapeake removed my very old, thin asphalt driveway, slightly regraded the pitch and slope, laid a gravel bed, and finished with 3-4" of new asphalt. The drive is approximately 90+' long, 12' wide, with a bump out to 17' along part of it. They also completely regraded my front and rear yards, removed numerous old (ugly) plantings and finished the yard with topsoil, seed and straw.

They came and spent half of the first day demolishing and hauling away the existing cracked asphalt. They came again the next day to put down compacted subgrade and paved with 3 inch thick new asphalt. The guys all looked very professional (no day labors) and our driveway looked great with a very nice texture and color. It definitely worth every penny we paid for.
Description of Work: We called two companies for quote and Chesapeake Paving came and emailed us the detailed quote the same day. They are about 1000 lower than the other company. We had a 300 ft long, 4000 sq ft, 20 year old asphalt drive way that need to be replaced.

Outstanding experience. Art came out to the house and recommended we do a full replacement of two pretty deteriorated driveways and save some money by adding a layer of asphalt to the shared pipestem which was not in such bad shape. From start to finish, Art and his crew members were professional, courteous, explained issues and solutions clearly, worked hard, and -- most importantly -- gave us a beautiful new driveway that adds value to our two homes. Was very impressed at how concerned the crew was to figure out the optimal way to channel rainwater based on the slope of the property and how the new driveway could be configured. We got the opportunity today to see the result of that effort, as a steady rain came down and the water was channeled very effectively off the surface. Previously, we had some low spots that puddled up and left muddy patches after every rain. No more. This was a two day job, by the way, and required several men and lots of heavy equipment. One minor complaint was that they parked a backhoe on a lawn area. Otherwise, couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

Chesapeake Paving did a very professional job. Actually we had given the work to another company and they did some things that we did not like so we had to cancel them during the work and we decided to go with Chesapeake mainly because of the reviews we saw on Angie's List. They came here and looked at the driveway and told us what they were going to do and they did a great job. Their price may be a little high but the quality of work is worth the price. We will definitely use them again in the future.

I chose them because they were the only asphalt company who called me back. I did have a really good experience. Pricing was really good. They explained everything what they are doing in detail and even the reason for the delay because they want me to know that they weren't just sitting around and not doing anything. Also, one of their workers was very friendly. They make sure I was totally fine with the design of my driveway before they leave the asphalt. We were very impressed; no surprises; just competent performance.
Description of Work: The work included removing all of an existing asphalt driveway, rolling out and compacting the sub-base, expanding the width and adding a new stone base. The paving was done to specifications and the edges were tamped to a 45 degree for support. Art was responsive to our requests to modify the contract to include specifics regarding depth of stone (4 inches) as well as answering other questions we had regarding details (i.e. location of gas line). The crew arrived right on schedule was efficient, professional and competent. The work was completed within a day; very nicely done.

Chesapeake Paving was the most responsive company that I contacted. This company was the first to give us an estimate and, as it turned out, the estimate was the lowest that we received. A couple of paving companies that are rated high on Angie's List never returned my call even after a second follow-up call. The work was completed about 6 weeks after the estimate was submitted to us due to our delay in making a decision and weather conditions. Our old driveway was a mess. In some areas, there was a foot of old asphalt. Consequently, Chesapeake Paving had to remove and dispose of more asphalt than expected. In addition, since the asphalt was so thick, more base had to be put down before the asphalt could be poured. Brian, who was the project manager, suggested that we remove the wooden ramp leading into our downstairs area which was installed to move the lawn mower in and out of our storage room. He offered to build a smaller ramp out of asphalt and we decided to accept his offer. I did not ask what this would cost, because I wanted it done regardless. I pointed out that there was a sewer access that had been buried by a company who repaved our driveway 10 years ago. The crew worked carefully around this area and installed a new cap for easy access. The access is now visible. The driveway looks fantastic. What an improvement! I thought that removal of the extra asphalt, the extra base, the sewer access cap and the new ramp would affect the total cost, but it didn't. Needless to say, I was even more impressed with this company after seeing a bill that matched the original estimate. Brian was very informative as to what was happening and was very patient and thorough in answering my questions. This company made the entire experience so positive. I am highly recommending this company.

I have delayed writing this report, because it has taken 9 months for us to decide that this company did a good job in the end. After the driveway was completed, we refrained from walking or driving on it for the amount of time they recommended. When we finally did walk down the driveway to inspect the work, we at first were unhappy with ridges that appeared where the various sections of the asphalt were joined. It didn't seem like a very neat job. We called, they returned with their heavy equipment and worked to smoothe out the ridges. In the process, they brought onto the new asphalt mud from their equipment. They said that the mud would wash away with the first rain. It did not, even after several rains. We called, and they returned and power-washed the driveway to try to remove the mud that was caked and spread all over the asphalt. It would not come off. Then, at their own expense, they had a company come out to seal the driveway a couple months later. Ever after the sealing process, whenever something muddy would drive or walk over the driveway, the mud would seep into the asphalt and would not come off--a truck with muddy tires, even people with muddy shoes would track mud that would not wash off. The owner, Art Baker, was very perplexed and had no explanation for why the asphalt soaked up dirt and mud that would not wash off. We concluded that this was going to be a permanent problem. However, I can say that after several months the original dirt and mud has finally washed or worn away, and the driveway looks good. I do not know why this problem occurred, but it seems to be resolved. The company was certainly responsive and tried their best to fix the problem.
