Chesapeake Paving

After obtaining 3 estimates, we chose Chesapeake Paving based mostly on it's apparent commitment to quality, and in every way the company lived up to and/or exceeding our expectations. All of the representatives were professional and polite--all very knowledgeable! The new driveway is far better than the old one. The company removed and hauled away the old driveway, rolled and compacted the sub-base, put in 3 inches thick of asphalt up to the concrete entrance to the garage, and tamped driveway edges to 45 degrees. They also dug and evened out the lawn on each side and cut the adjoining sidewalk to be straight and flush with the new driveway. When done, the site was thoroughly cleaned as well--All done in just a morning! This was done a month ago, and the driveway looks perfect!

The initial work in 2012 was been done very well. The work was completed as promised and the driveway looked very good. My B rating above for Quality is really a result of problems with the driveway post installation. The new driveway began to develop small cracks after two years which were covered by sealing. It developed serious and substantial cracking this year - 3 years post installation. I don't know the cause. I did get back to Chesapeake to let them know about the problem. They too are not certain about the cause of my cracking. However, even though I am out of the warranty period Brian and Ed did come out and completed repairs at no cost to me. If the problems continue, they offered to come out again and, if necessary, would with me on a solution. I believe that is good customer service and reflects well on Professionalism and Responsiveness. I chose this company because it had a Super Service Award from Angie's List. I am pleased with the recent good customer follow-up service though disappointed with the cracking.

Chesapeake said that the problems I was having with my 11 year old asphalt driveway were due to inadequate stone base and inferior asphalt. They removed the old driveway and installed new compactible stone and 3 " of "V-DOT approved asphalt. The installation came with a one year guarantee. Well, less than two years after the installation, all the problems I had had with my 11 year old driveway have re-emerged and in some cases worsened, I have cracks that run the entire width of the driveway and the edges of the driveway are completely eroding. I contacted Ed Stanley weeks ago to see what the company could do to resolve the problems but after numerous calls he has ignored my concerns. There is no way I could recommend this company to anyone. One year is not adequate to determine the quality of the work performed. I have pictures available upon request.

Within a couple days of contacting they arrived to do an estimate. they arrived on time and provided recommendations based on our situation and within 2 days they provided an estimate. the price was fair compared to another quote that I received and unlike the competitor they could build a retaining wall to support our expansion. they were responsive any time that I had a question and they kept me well informed on scheduling, which was a challenge due to the time of year since temperatures had to be 40 degrees. they built the wall within a couple weeks which looked great and a few weeks later the weather finally worked out to complete the work. they took out our existing driveway and then expanded it to 20' wide. looks great and I am very happy with the service.

My neighbors and I needed to replace our driveways after 26 years, so we each solicited bids from multiple paving companies. We were able to get 4 written estimates (after speaking collectively to about 12 contractors) for the job of repaving three driveways, along with their respective references. After checking out the referenced jobs, and speaking among ourselves, we agreed to open a negotiation with Chesapeake for the work (his referenced paving job was still in excellent condition some 5-6 years later). Ed was very responsive to phone calls, and worked with each neighbor individually to address specific concerns. A date was chosen; work commenced exactly as planned and lasted for the time period that was estimated. We thought our driveway was going to encounter issues with drainage, but Brian, the crew supervisor (and part owner of the company) showed us that that was not the case (and he could have told us otherwise and charged us for additional services because we wouldn't have known any better). We also extended the back of our drive by a few feet and, as promised, the terrain was filled in with rock and compressed so as to match the height of the existing driveway. We also had an old brick walkway that met the driveway in two places and Brian's crew trimmed the bricks and repositioned as needed to give a straight-line between asphalt and brick, and made sure that the height of both was equal. Above and beyond what was expected but unbelievably appreciated by us. Brian's crew addressed similar issues with each of my neighbors to create a finished product which shows that Chesapeake pays attention to the little details that a homeowner might not think about. The crew was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. The company did exactly what they said they would when they said they would do it. Several conversations with Brian while work was being conducted left us in no doubt that he knows his asphalt paving and loves his job. Chesapeake left the jobsites of all three driveways clean of debris and as close to looking undisturbed as possible. I would highly recommend this company.

They showed up on schedule and completed the work in a very professional manner. It was clear these guys have done this before. They worked together as a team and I had a new driveway in under 3 hours. Looks great, couldn't be happier.

I called and left a detailed message regarding replacing and expanding my driveway and the call was never returned.

Chesapeake was the lower of 2 bids we got from Angie's list rated providers to fix our driveway which was in very bad shape. Overall we are very pleased with the work - the team was professional, experienced and helpful. They showed up on time and got the job done by 1pm. I wanted to put a pipe under the driveway to help with drainage and they did not expect this (it was discussed and hand written on the estimate but didn't get to the installation team). Despite not expecting to deal with it they were very helpful in figuring out how to make it work and installing the drain and pipe - this part turned into a bit more of a project than I expected. I would say they performed above and beyond. The same goes for the extension areas which required some fill and preparation. They then put down extra fill as required and the new pavement which seems of good quality and thickness. There are a few lines in the pavement that my wife commented on after the left, but I think that should be covered when it is sealed. Overall it looks great and now has room to maneuver and park..

They told me when they were going to be there and they were there and did the work exactly they way the distributed it to me. They were one of the few companies that had the machinery that can do my drive. They were the only company that could and would do it.

Called and left a message asking for an estimate. I provided details including approximate square footage of driveway. Never called back.

We chose Chesapeake after requesting bids from eight companies (several of which never bothered even to get back to us, or stopped responding when I asked follow-up questions). Chesapeake's price was in the mid to lower range of the ones we received, and we noticed that they had many very positive reviews on Angie's List. The project turned out to be more complicated than we anticipated, because we had to get approvals from the county and VDOT since the road is in an neighborhood still under development and so still on bond. But throughout the process, Chesapeake was helpful and responsive to our questions. We also needed a long, 340-ft driveway that wended its way through woods and over three culverts. And when they looked over the plan, they realized they could save money by eliminating the need for one of the culvert pipes, and could make another one located closer to the house barely visible. I was skeptical when they said the job would take just two days, but by the end of day one they had the roadway cleared and gravel installed. On the second day they installed the asphalt and did grading work. Since I work at home, I had plenty of time to watch the crew at work and talk to them as they progressed on the job. They were all incredibly talented, very friendly, and worked fast and efficiently. When they finished, we had a beautiful new driveway and there was little evidence to suggest that it had just been installed.

they dug up and finished paving our driveway in 2 hours. They arrived on time and were extremely professional. They protected my siding of the house and theplants and bushes nearby. I have a 2 car garage and they didn't get any overspray on anything. I will definitely use them again and highly recommend them.

Overall an excellent experience. There were punctual, professional, and courteous. Price was in line with other quotes I received and they talked me through the whole process. They finished in under a 1/2 day and explained everything I needed to do after the work was completed. If I ever need another replacement or repair they are my first and only call.

Got several competitive bids and selected Chesapeake Paving based on reviews and bids. They were very professional leading up to the scheduled day for the job. Turned out a full, seeming professional crew and interacted with homeowner throughout the process so there were no apparent glitches. However, as they completed the finishing of the asphalt surface they left tracks down the center of the driveway. The crew, including owner's son, acted as if this was normal and departed. I thought the tracks would disappear as the asphalt cured. When the tracks remained, I contacted the firm and asked if they could repair the work so there were no tracks. They visited the site but said they could not do anything about them. They suggested that with time and sealing of the driveway after two years the tracks would go away. I had Chesapeake seal the driveway in 2012, per their guidance. Now, after three years the tracks are still visible. I'm getting ready to seal the driveway again and will use a different vendor. Too bad, because until they left the tracks on the driveway they had done very professional work. So I can't give them higher grade than B.

I called Chesapeake Paving and left a message on their answering machine. Two days later I got a call back and we arranged for time when their estimator could stop by, which was a few days later. The day after the estimator stopped by, they emailed me a contract with specifics on what the job would take. I emailed back about a few concerns -- mainly the drainage off the driveway -- and that was replied to the next day. I replied and requested they put the job on the schedule; I would print out the contract, sign and mail it to them. They replied with an agreeable date, about two weeks later. When the day for the job came neither my wife, nor I, could be home. I figured this was not necessary. I did leave early from work and I arrived while the crew was more than half way done with the job. The crew supervisor told me in detail what that had done and what the remaining steps were. I told him my concerns with the drainage; he said he was told about that and they had made sure the base had the right tilt in it to achieve the drainage. They finished and I paid with a check. The driveway looks great and rain drains from it just like I was told. I would use them again.

Last year, Chesapeake Paving installed a new driveway for us. They did a great job. This year the new driveway needed to be sealed. I contacted Chesapeake Paving and made arrangements for them to do the job. While it took a while to get it done, because of weather and tree debris, they finally were able to complete the work. They arrived on time and were finished in about 2 hours. The driveway looks great.

After VDOT replaced our culvert pipe (it collapses), I was left with a "dip" that my cars would scrape on. I contacted VDOT and they were not concerned, nor would they even consider fixing the problem. Chesapeake Paving (Ed) was able to fix the "dip" as well as make the mouth of the driveway look terrific. As a matter of fact, they were the ONLY people that responded. I contacted several here on Angie's list, no one responded. I hate giving them only a "B" for price, as I really didn't have any to compare it to. B is GODD! No shame in a B!! I gave a C in responsiveness as they are very busy and hard to get confirmation about things. Also hard to pay them! I tried calling to give them a credit card a couple times. Ended up sending a check. All in all, they did a TERRIFIC job. I will definitely use them again when we expand our driveway.

After a couple of weather delays, the work was completed in one day. Workers were very professional.

They're very nice and friendly over the phone. However, they don't do residential work in Virginia.

Our existing driveway developed deep ruts and cracks (builder did not properly prepare base or pour deep enough asphalt in the designated area). We also wanted to remove a landscaped area directly behind the existing driveway and extend the driveway to the fence line. Art Baker from Chesapeake Paving evaluated the situation and provided a fair estimate. Because we were also in the process of installing a new fence and executing a large backyard hardscape project that were delayed due to Homeowners Association application reviews and weather, we experienced several delays in scheduling the driveway repaving. Chesapeake was extremely flexible in rescheduling the driveway project. Once completed, the driveway looks great and we get many compliments from guests and neighbors. They cleaned up their mess and left the surounding area looking like it did before the work was done. We would do business with Chesapeake Paving again in a heartbeat and would recommend them to anyone.

Art and his crew arrived on the site at about 9:00AM and were finished around 2:00 PM. They removed all of the old driveway ad levels and compacted the sub-surface. They applied and compacted the stone base and installed the asphalt and compacted and smoothed it to a finished product. They did a totally profession job and cleaned up the area before they left. Art consulted with my wife and left detailed instructions about care and maintenance of the new driveway.

See above in "what did the provider do?" The driveway looks amazing and the people doing the work were good at what they do.
