Originally called to have liner inspected for earthquake damage prior to wood burning conversion; was originally skeptical when presented with a $3500 estimate due to discovered water coming down into the house from cracks in brick and crown. After further discussions with the estimator and internet research, went forward with repairs. Day of the work went forward without incident and work was completed and outcome discussed in detail. A few weeks later an issue was discovered and Ashmasters was more than willing to come to evaluate and repair the issue at no cost under warranty. Would highly recommend Ashmasters for chimney work and will continue to use them for future inspections.

This was the only provider we called and we were willing to accept their quote. Someone answered the phone on our first call and the next morning we had a quote left at our door - the inspector did not waste any time! My husband was very satisfied with their work and with the workmen - he considers their service outstanding!

Ashmasters was called to clean our chimney. The came on the date scheduled but were about 45 minutes late, no big deal. Upon arrival, there was little to no interaction with the first two guys that walked in. A little unsettling. After cleaning, the two man crew man left without saying anything. I had to follow them out, thinking they were leaving. That's when a third guy, the boss I guess, introduced himself. He was busy writing up an estimate for an additional $1500 worth of services. One question he had was why didn't the chimney damper open all the way? To remedy that he could install a new $400 damper at the top of the chimney. The answer to his question appears simple: the damper didn't open any further because it was designed that way. This was easy to see since it's cast iron and has several teeth, the last of which governs how far it can open. Based on the interactions and questionable recommendation, I would not use this firm again.

We are sorry you feel this way. We try to interact with all our customers. That means being polite and courteous. I'm sure the technicians get busy and forget to smile, but no disrespect attended. As far as your remark about the damper, we have to put down what we find wrong. it is up to you if you want it repaired.

Right on time and professional demeanor. They put on hospital show covers when entering and laid down a tarp before even looking. They had a clear idea of what type of chimney we had with just a glance. Sweeeping was fat and efficient. After the firebox was cleaned, some major cracks were apparent. They offered us an estimate for replacement, without being pushy about it. Everything was done was done within 30 min.

Ashmasters: Definitely a professional crew. They all worked very well together, and they clearly had a great deal of experience with replacing chimney flues and chimney tops. They were efficient and paid attention to detail. We also appreciated the crew?s willingness to keep us informed as the job went along. We also appreciated the explanation of the mechanics/workings of the flues and the special chimney tops. Very nice people to work with. Reasonable price. Will definitely hire them again. Highly recommend.

We are getting a wet smoky smell in our house and were experiencing water leaking into the wood box next to the fireplace. I found Ashmasters on Angie's List and called them to discuss our problem. The woman I spoke with was very helpful and knowledgeable about possible causes. She was able to have her technicians stop by on Saturday morning to inspect the chimney and look for possible causes. Unfortunately we could not be home for this inspection but they called with their findings and suggestion for fixing the problem. We decided to move forward with their suggestion and scheduled the work. On July 18th two workers showed up on time and got right to work. The work they did looks good from ground ... and it appears that the water leaks have stop ... but unfortunately the smell still comes and goes. Not sure what our next step will be but as far as Ashmasters goes we would use them again. Thanks!

Thank you. This was a good experience.
Description of Work: I had the chimney inspected one day and then I had the mortar joints repaired on the firebox floor, had a new cement crown made, and some repointing (mortar joint repair) on the outside of the chimney bricks. So they came two separate days. The communications went well. I was able to reschedule the date of the work and they were very responsive to our request. Each technician was great and they were courteous and professional and wore shoe covers. Ray and Luis did a very good job. They were neat and took care to protect my new carpet. They were easy to communicate with.

Two technicians from Ashmasters arrived exactly on time and got to work straight away. I love the fact that that they used shoe covers upon entering our home to protect our floors. While one technician focused on the cleaning of the firebox and the chimney, the other went up on the roof to inspect the chimney, inside and out. After the inspection, he took the time to explain to us what the issues with our chimney were, what options were available for correcting the issues, and even what options we had if we chose not to address the issues found. There was absolutely NO pressure to make an immediate decision and we were left with a detailed estimate of the cost to open the diameter of our chimney and replace the liner. We had a very positive experience with these two gentleman. We would absolutely hire them again in the future.
Description of Work: The technician conducted a Level 1 inspection of our chimney and fireplace, thoroughly cleaned both, and let us know what issues there were that needed to be addressed.

Very friendly, on time, professional, and kept the area clean while cleaning the chimney. They also were very good at explaining the repairs that need done and teaching us about our chimney, had us look up in the chimney and explained what was happening that is allowing water to get in. Lined both chimneys with a stainless steel liner. It was a very difficult job for them as this is a very old house. Yet they worked well together and did a great job. They are a very good team as they all like each other. |I think the price was fair for what they had to do. It took two days and three guys.

Installed a cap on our chimney to prevent further water damage to our ceiling. The installer showed up on time and did good work, best we can tell, but it took nearly two months to fit us into the schedule. They claimed they were overbooked due to recent storm.

When they got here, they didn't remove the wood stove, but instead, I got to listen to a sales pitch on all the repair work needed to the chimney. Pretty much everything they told me was greatly exaggerated. They said the spark arrester was damaged due to a chimney fire. It was all discolored and that's how they could tell. They said the existing flue was loose and moving around. They told me the concrete on the top was broken and cracked. When they left, I climbed onto the roof and found none of that to be the case. The spark arrester cap was in pristine condition. It was dirty is all. Hey, it sits on top of a chimney and has dirty smoke run thru it all winter, of course it's going to be dirty. The concrete on the chimney was in good shape and the flue was not loose. They basically were not here to clean my chimney, just here to sell me an overpriced liner. The quote I got was $2600 but they would knock that down to $2100. (you can buy a stainless steel chimney pipe kit for 3-5 hundred on line) The upside I suppose is that they only charged $50.

Response from Ashmasters Chimney Service Inc
We are a nationally certified chimney company and we have to do safety inspections, which some homeowners do not like, especially when they are trying to sell their homes. We recommend you getting a 2nd or 3rd opinion from other certified chimney companies in the area. The technician that was at your home recommended you install a stainless steel sleeve into your chimney because it looked like it had had a chimney fire from the cracked clay lining, also the crown was cracked allowing rain water into the chimney. Initially we had Ashmasters hired to sweep 2 chimneys. As it turned out we contracted with them do some major upgrades to two flues. I was skeptical at first, but they were very thorough in explaining and showing me the problems and associated risks with our 40 year old chimney liners and caps. It turned out that the old ceramic liner in the kitchen flu was so badly cracked in so many places that there were layers of soot between the liner and the brick chimney that they showed me. The basement wood stove had never lined up with the flu opening, which I could clearly see when they removed the faceplate, and there was no adapter from the top of the wood stove to the chimney, much less a liner. This explained the continual lack of draft in that stove. Ashmasters actually did more than contracted for, including an air tight flu cap for the kitchen fireplace (replaced the traditional kind of one with a more energy efficient at air tight, stink bug impervious kind) without charging extra for it. They ran into several obstacles due to construction oddities by the home builders, but they overcame them all and did not charge a dime above the estimate. They did not mind that I was very involved in the process and checking to see what was what. They were clean, professional, knowledgeable, and infinitely patient with my many questions. I recommend them highly. We will be using them from now on. For standard cleaning, they charge $75 for a regular chimney cleaning and $90 for a wood stove. The price they show above was for the extensive repairs which included demo and replacement of 2 flu liners, caps, insulation, and more.

They arrived 10 minutes early and did a quality job. To include giving me advise on how to make sure I am buring the wood at the right tempature.
Description of Work: Ashmaster came to clean my freestanding woodstove chimney. The two gentlemen that came laid down a tarp on the floor to make sure no dust or foot prints were left on my floor. As they inspected my chimney the found that the chimney was seperated right near the top. THis apparently was done by the previous company and was told I was lucky a fire wasn't started .

It was great. We had several estimates for repairing and the entire rebuild just made the most sense. The cost wasn't that much more and we didn't want to have to deal with any further degradation of the chimney. The crew was prompt and worked consistently until the job was done. Clean up was good. At lease one company was quoting more for the rebuild from the roof up than Ashmasters was for the entire rebuild. Would definitely recommend them.

I called Ashmasters to come back out and clean the entire dryer vent, given Fairfax County has reported house fires starting from dryer vents. They reluctantly came back out on 24 August, and this time they only cleaned the outside grate. That was all. I challenged the technician about cleaning the entire dryer vent, and he responded that Ashmasters only cleans from the inside to up to 4 ft. That makes no sense! I could easily do that myself with a coat hanger. I don't have the 10-12 ft rotator device used to clean dryer vents. They did this for my neighbor downstairs, but to date, they refuse to do so for me. To date, the entire dryer vent has not been cleaned. I challenged the technician again, and he replied that as long as he feels air coming out, he doesn't need to do that. That's complete nonsense! I tried through the Better Business Bureau to obtain a refund to no avail. This company is not good. I would not recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: I hired Ashmasters to clean out my entire dryer vent, which they did not do. In August, I noticed different technicians came to my neighbor's, and they used a 10-12ft instrument to clean out the entire dryer vent. The technician who came to my unit in May, well he did not do this. He only cleaned from the inside at most 2 ft.

This statement is not true! We did clean out your dryer vent in May and then again in August, plus sent your money back because you were not happy after you had already turned in your receipt to your HOA stating that it was cleaned out. Just to let you know the check has cleared the bank also...
