I rec'd a coupon for a chimney cleaning and inspection for $75, which seemed to be a decent deal. They spent a total of maybe 15 minutes cleaning the inside of the chimney with what appeared to be nothing more than a large supersize wet/dry vac. And the inspection didn't take much longer. The technician was very professional and thorough and provided an estimate of some issues identified. However, my only complaint was that I didn't feel I rec'd the level of service expected from paying almost $100. They were there for no more than 30 minutes, and the amount paid was from a coupon!

Easy to schedule appointment, the guys were friendly and professional. I trust their opinion.
Description of Work: Had them last fall to sweep and add stainless caps, did the job to perfection. Had them back in Sept of 2012 to re-do the concrete on the top of the chimney, again, great job. Would call them again for any chimney issue. Actually, my mom is having them do her concrete repair this week

See above. Sorry this is my first review.
Description of Work: I live in an 1901 victorian in a historic district. I needed a chimney cap waterproofed and another chimney rebuilt the roof out and relined. Kevin came right out and immediately appreciated the historic value of the house. He made recommendations that focused on both function and historic accuracy. What impressed me the most about Kevin, however, was his willingness to listen to my concerns and address them immediately. When I didn't care for a small detail in the look of the finished chimney Kevin came back out, agreed on the detail, and sent his work crew back out to fix it without fuss. This was after he had already been paid in full. When I needed him to come back out and check for further leaks in the cap he did so without hesitation. Put simply, Kevin is a professional who understands the importance of taking care of his customers. I would recommend him without hesitation for anything chimney related.

After removing a 30 year old wood stove insert, found our old liner pieces (40 + years old) had shifted and the fireplace was unsafe to use. Got three estimates and Ashmasters was tied with another company price wise. Went with them because the rep was very good at explaining exactly what made it unsafe to use and what it would take to make it safe again. Work was done within a day, no fuss, no muss. Very pleased.

The appointment was brief and effective, a good value. They honored a coupon found via Angie's List and although the price seemed high for just a quick inspection, it covers the technician's travel cost, and if you need a cleaning of any sort the cost goes toward it.
Description of Work: The technician arrived on time and performed a brief chimney inspection, explaining the ins and outs of fireplaces like ours (in a condominium). Fortunately we didn't need a chimney cleaning and we fulfilled the move-out requirement of the property management company.

Overall I wasn't impressed. The Owner was the one providing the estimate. While he was punctual, I felt like he either didn't want my business or he was too interested in making a buck. His estimate to replace 2/3 of the chimney (basically starting at the "shoulder" and going up) was $8,000. I got two other estimates (from Angie's List companies) and they ranged from $3,300-$4,300. When I told him about the lower quotes he said I should go with them because he definitely couldn't do it that cheap. He also gave me a quote for putting a cable around the chimeny and securing it to the house. It wouldn't have closed the gap between the chimney and the side of the house, but it would have stopped the problem from getting any worse. The quote for that was $1,250. When he looked in the fireplace he said he saw a large hole that was a fire hazard. In the quote he included fixing that hole. He said he DEFINITELY would not use the fireplace until it was fixed. However, when the other two chimney companies looked at it, they didn't note anything. And the last guy I had look at it two times. He said he wouldn't do anything and that if it was his house, he wouldn't repair it. The fact that his estimate was $4k more than the next company was disturbing and shocking and left a bad taste in my mouth. And the fact that he seemed to be making a mountain out of a mole hill also came across as disingenuous. Overal I wouldn't use this company again. If this is how their Owner treats customers, I would have no confidence in his other employees.
Description of Work: My chimney apparently wasn't fastened securely to the side of my house when it was built so it was leaning back from the house. I called 3 chimney companies for estimates, all on Angie's List. I called Ashmasters that morning and they came out later that day. In fact it was the Owner who came to give me the estimate. I asked him to give me an estimate to rebuild about 2/3 of the chimney and another estimate that didn't involve replacing so much of the chimney and that was cheaper. He also looked inside the chimney at the fireplace to make sure it was safe.

Response from Ashmasters Chimney Service Inc
Every home we go to, we give an honest, fair look and bid. We repair hundreds of chimneys a year. The majority of the chimneys we fix, were previously looked at and priced from another company. We are very in-depth, and safe in all of our estimates and repairs. They are many ways to do less quality work,we won't. I charged this gentleman nothing to drive to his home, wait for him, and give him an estimate, which was fair for the work that needed to be done. I cannot explain why another company could not identify an inner structural problem. I have heard nothing from this gentleman, since my visit to his home. I would ask him to please get another evaluation from a qualified inspector.

Not too bad, but not perfect. Although we asked about the dryer cleaning we did not schedule, but work was performed anyway. We would have preferred that it not have been done. Expressed a little surprise, but apparently the office miscommunicated with the technician. The work was fine, there was a little problem with the paperwork that took some discussion. They wanted to add extraneous comments about either work they wanted to do or indicate they did not inspect. Because this was required based on a home inspection we did not want either of those on the bill. At first we met some resistance and thought we might have to hire another company, but eventually we were able to come to an agreement on what the bill would say. The extra work was questionable we thought and the price seemed high. The big issue though was that we did not want to get into any area not covered by the inspection because we have a very difficult buyer.

Ray arrived with his unloaded tools well within the appointment time-frame. He prepared and protected the area around the fireplace. Ray's appearance and bearing were professional and purposeful. I knew that he was there to perform timely and efficiently. Ray assessed my woodburing habits and provided salient guidance, assistance and hints that would enhance my future woodburning experiences. I followed through with his recommdation that I purchase a second stainless-steel chimney top/cover so that I might rotate the pair from one cleaning to the next. I burn 'one-fire' a season so the soot build up is thick. I will water-soak one stainless steel cover in a plastic container while the other is being used so that I will always have a top relatively free of soot build up. When Ray visits for my next cleaning he will have a soot-free top to replace the soiled top with. He also provided great advice relative to a second (not used much) fire stove in the Mother-in-Law suite. Ray came, assessed, performed in a timely and efficient fashion, gave me some excellent stock market advice and departed leaving all clean and in excellent order.

When I arrived home they were well underway sweeping the chimney and preparing to remove the old wood burning stove. They had protection on the floor for the removal of the stove. Once the wood stove was removed they completely cleaned the fire place box and showed me the inside of the chimney and one of the birds nest that had been removed. The new crown as install and the chimney cap and damper. I elected to go with a new type of damper that closes on top of the stack. This was explained to me in detail and its operation demonstrated to me so that I would feel comfortable using it. They were very professional, cleaned up everything when they were finished and managed to lift the old stove (which was very heavy) in to the truck for haul away.

We weren't thrilled that chimney sweeping fell under our responsibility in our rental house, but we were having smoke "belches" when we used the fireplace. We used Angie's List and found Ashmasters. They got great reviews and offered a coupon for $75 for cleaning and inspection. I set up the appointment immediately. The technician was prompt and very friendly, explaining everything he was doing and telling me about a few issues with our fireplace. He didn't get a speck of ash or anything anywhere, and was very speedy. He left me with a clean chimney and a report on his findings for me to share with our landlords. I've never had a chimney swept before, but I can't imagine things going better than this. I wasn't charged a penny over the $75 and our chimney has been working perfectly ever since! I highly recommend this company.

We were very pleased with this company. They were professional and responsive and their cost was hundreds less than other companies that gave us estimates. They were particularly accommodating in scheduling the work. Additionally, they honored a coupon that we found after they gave us the quote. I didn't rate their quality only because it's not something that I have personally checked because I'd have to go up on the roof. Based on our overall interaction with this company, I would expect the quality of the work to be excellent.

Last year they did a cleaning and gave me an estimate ($2000+) for rebuilding the upper chimney, similar to the occasional other estimates from other companies over several years. I deferred for financial reasons. In February, they called and inquired if I wanted it done and I told them I could not afford that money at this time. They indicated it was slow season, so they could do it for a reduced cost of $1500. I asked for it in writing and one of the bosses came out, reviewed the work and gave me the quote at that price and even included a few extra things like cleaning and inside re-pointing. The 3 person crew arrived on time, even a little early at 8:30 and completed the work around 4 (with a lunch break). The results look good and the bricks even match my 40 year old lower bricks. From the ground the quality looks good. The crew was not aware of a couple of the smaller things in the quote (cleaning, repointing), but willing did the work once I mentioned it. Clean-up could have been a bit better as lots of small mortar pieces in the grass, but a minor note only. The crew did mention that they had not seen so much work for that low cost on any other of their jobs. Overall a good value.

They were true professionals and noticed things which needed to be repaired which I would not have. I was able to get things fixed the first time which I love. They guys were great. Hard workers and very polite.
Description of Work: Came to inspect the house and decide what had to be done. I was expecting them to only be able to do the chimneys, but they noticed the brick on our house was cracked on two sides and said they would be able to repair the cracks too. They sent a terrific crew who worked in cold conditions but stayed with it removing bricks, cleaning them, re-pointing them back in place as well as re-installing new chimney crowns and caps, and putting in an insert for a wood burning stove in an existing fireplace. They scoured the property looking for bricks which matched the existing brick and found them. Everything matches perfectly.

It was a very positive experience. Ashmasters arrived on time and did both an interior and exterior inspection. He took the time to explain that there were not any structural issues with the chimney, however due to the size of the opening that the smoke was building up. He provided me several options to include installing additional material to reduce the size of the opening and getting doors for the fireplace. He recommended the doors as they could be self installed and wouldn't require me to pay anyone. He suggested that first I go get several bricks and elevate the log grate closer to the opening. He explained the thermodynamics very clearly and completely to explain why this very simple (and essentially free) step could address the problem. On the leaking fireplace he provided an estimate but said that the work wasn't time critical and made suggestions that would allow me to complete it in the future when it would be less costly. I found it very refreshing that not only was he encouraging me to not spend money on the drafting chimney, but looking for ways to save me money on the chimney that needs repairs. I can not recommend them enough especially given the fact that they were professional and communicated entirely in english.
Description of Work: I was having issues with one chimney not drawing and another chimney leaking water. I had two other companies come out and provide feedback on the chimney that wasn't drawing. In both cases the companies recommended that I needed repairs or modifications that ranged between $1000-$3000. In neither case did I get a good feeling that their solution would correct the problem or why I wasn't having issues with the chimney all the time. I had Ashmasters come out and do an inspection because one of the companies indicated that the issue was the work that I had done previously in installing a stainless steel liner.

We had an Ashmasters coupon from a mailer for $75, but only called because they also had an A rating with Angie's List. We have a fireplace in the living room and one in the basement, but our chimney has three flues, two are for the fireplaces and one is the vent for our furnace. Three Ashmaster men showed up to clean and inspect our chimneys. I told them that we had rain coming in the fireplace when we had heavy rain the week before, and that at the same time rain water was coming off the vent pipe in the basement that leads to the furnace. Two men put down a tarp in the living room and got out their brushes and equipment, which included a vacuum. Using a flashlight, the main man (the one doing most of the talking) shined it up the flue. He said it looked like something was up there and I told him we knew that the previous owner had put insulation up there. They put a ladder up against the house and the main man went up on the roof. The two men who stayed in the house assembled brushes and seemed to be able to communicate with the main man who was up on the roof. He came down and told me that we wouldn't be able to use either fireplace because the area between the basement fireplace and the vent for the furnace was crumbling. He said in order to use the fireplaces they would need to be relined. He gave me a quote of over $3,000 to reline both chimneys using metal. When I mentioned the basement fireplace, the main man said that the $75 coupon covered cleaning only one flue. He agreed to go downstairs with me to look at the basement fireplace, and the area where the furnace vent pipe had leaked from rainwater. While we were down there the guys upstairs seemed to be making noises, and I heard the vacuum. I assumed they were cleaning the fireplace, but I realize now that they were probably just picking up the tarp and their tools. I mentioned that we should probably cover the fireplace flues, but the main man said the two fireplace flues already had metal covers but they could put a cap on the flue from the furnace for an extra $100. I said I wanted to get that cover for the furnace flue. I walked outside and was surprised to see the two men had already put the ladder on top of the van! They were ready to leave. I walked out to the van with the main man and sort of laughed nervously when I saw that one of the men had to sit in a plastic lawn chair in the back of the vehicle, which was only equipped with the two front seats. The two guys were already packed up and ready to leave, and they acted aggravated when the boss man told them I wanted to get the cap installed, because they had already put the ladder away, and one of them had to assemble the cover. One of them put the ladder up against the house and went up there to put the cap on. I started to go up the ladder but he waved his hands to stop me. I wish I had gotten my ladder out right away to check their work after they left, because my husband and I were up on the roof on Sunday and discovered that both of the fireplace flues are still packed with insulation that a previous owner had shoved in there. Ashmasters did not clean either one of the fireplace chimneys! We were very disappointed and discouraged at being treated this way, and I couldn't help but wonder how many other customers didn't happen to go up on their roofs to check whether work was done properly or not. I called and spoke to the owner who said his men wouldn't do that, and he refused to believe that both fireplace flues were left stuffed with insulation. I told him that my husband and I were up there trying to pull it out but could only reach so far with our arms, and I had to ask if he was calling me a liar! He said he would be happy to send the crew back but I refused, telling him HE should come and check their work, since he didn't believe me, and that he should also ask his men if they remembered the job. I told I was a small business owner, and I told him that in my opinion if they continued to work like that they would put him out of business. I also told him that we were going to have them come and reline the two flues for over $3,000 but they lost that job. He offered to refund my $75, and I told him that what really bothered me when my husband and I were sitting up on the roof was thinking of all the other older people they were ripping off. We all know most customers wouldn't dare go up on their roofs!

Response from Ashmasters Chimney Service Inc
The member called Ashmasters out to do a sweep and inspection of her chimneys in September of this year. The technician that was in charge did his job and left her an estimate to repair both chimneys (which both needed liners) She called back stating that we did not do our job and that we was trying to take advantage of her. We offered to send a truck back and re-do the sweep so she could watch what was being done, she refused. We also told her we would refund her money, anything to try and make her happy, but she refused that also! We tryed to solve this matter, but unfortunately this did not happen. We have been in business since 1996 and strive to make a good name and do honest work.
