Good estimates- but we did not move forward. Chose other companies.
Description of Work: Estimate on fence and deck/patio. They had good ideas and were very competitive. They would have been my second choice based on ideas as well as value- however we chose another company that had a little better idea.

Armor Fence and Deck was recommended by a neighbor in the community. They came out at the scheduled time and took down the information regarding the type of deck we were looking for and the materials we wanted. They said they would provide a quote by 4pm the next business day, but never did.

Within two weeks after the estimate, I had a new backyard fence. I am very pleased and my neighbors are impressed. They did (unfortunately) remove the property markers, which i am not happy about. It took two guys working from 0730 (am) to about 1830 (pm). Fence was done in one day.
Description of Work: A backyard fence was falling down. I wanted estimates on wood privacy fence and vinyl privacy fence, about 6 foot high with a 2- leaf drive through gate. I called two companies, both of which were listed in Fairfax County (Alexandria, Franconia Mount Vernon) Best Pick reports. Both would take down and remove the old fence. One would dig post holes 30 inches deep, the other 18 inches deep. Armor Fence had the slightly smaller price (the estimates were within $500 of each other) and would dig the post holes 30 inches, AND would install the new fence within 2 weeks. Within two weeks after the estimate, I had a new backyard fence. I am very pleased and my neighbors are impressed. They did (unfortunately) remove the property markers, which i am not happy about. We had a very nice privacy fence installed by Armor fence back in 2005. They came in at the best price at the time and they did a great job. I have no complaints about the first time I used them. Afterwards we had a severe storm that knocked over part of our fence. In fairness it had extreme winds that knock over many trees and caused a lot of damage elsewhere as well. My problem is that when I called for an estimate on the repairs, it took them several days to get back to me. No worries. I let that slide. Well, we are moving and I contact them to install a new fence. I left one message with no reply. I called and spoke with someone whom said that someone would call me back. I never heard back. I didn't call again. I went with another company that was more responsive.

Left a message with Armor Fence office to have someone contact me about a repair. * Thursday - Got a call back, explained what I needed, and felt good about getting the fence repaired. * Monday - called twice to the rep (once in the morning, once in the afternoon with another bit of info) and no calls back. * Friday - still no response to tried again one last time The fence Armor installed originally was good - thought they'd be able to fix it (5 years later so not under warranty, which I understood) but disappointed by the lack of follow through. This was late February, early March, so still early in the 'season', I would imagine, to be that busy not to return phone calls. Maybe they're not in the repair business but just let me know you can't/don't want to do the work rather than leave me hanging.

Requested an estimate and they came out the next day and provided me an estimate. After the estimate was received I e-mailed the gentleman who came out a couple of questions and never received an answer. I then called and talked to him personally and he said he would get back to me with an answer. He never did. I then submitted a web request for a new estimate. Another gentleman called and I explained to him the situation. He said he would have the original gentleman give me a call which he did. He got me another quote after our discussion. The quote contained a different fence manufacturer than the first estimate. I e-mailed him again asking questions about the fence but never received a reply. At this point I decided to move on to another company.

We recently bought a Townhouse and we contacted Armor Fence for an estimate for a new deck & fence. Our property came with an odd balcony off the kitchen which we wanted to replace with a deck and also wanted a fence for our yard (for our amazing dogs of course). We needed to use underneath the deck as storage for outdoor gardening items, so installing a drainage system under the deck (for water run-off so our items stay dry) was a must. We had three companies come out and give estimates, Armor Fence being one of them. We ultimately decided to go with Armor Fence because they were very knowledgable about our needs to use the underside of the deck as storage and the drainage system that needed to come with it. One of the other companies had no clue what we needed but promised to "figure it out," and the other said "you can go to Home Depot and get..." (umm, I'm not doing any work here, why do you think you are here?) so we decided to go with Armor Fence. Armor Fence's estimate, was still in line with the others even though they were not meeting all our needs. Armor Fence helped us get everything together we needed to submit the project to our HOA and gathered all county permits needed. After HOA approved, construction started immediately and was completed in about a week. It looks amazing! Our new deck is very nice (complete with lights on the stairs) and the much needed drainage system is perfect. The fence is just right. Unfortunately for us we needed this project completed in the rainy winter, which made for a complete mess during construction. Once complete, our backyard was a mudpit and mud was tracked all over our brand new deck. We expressed this sadness to Armor Fence and they came out and washed off the whole deck for us! Talk about customer service! We've had several visitors since completion, and everyone raves about how amazing it looks!! I would recommend Armor Fence to my friends & family.

From the initial meeting, through the estimate process and to completion of the project Tim and his staff were awesome. I met with Mike McGuckin who was very knowledgeable and reassuring about a portion of the fence that had to go around a tree. He gave me an estimate right away. I got a couple of other estimates which were only a couple of hundred above Armor, but I was much more comfortable and confident with Mike. I called to arrange for the fence to be installed and they were able to come out the following week. The workers were friendly and went over everything with me and were done very quickly and cleanly. We got a colonial style fence with two gates. I was going to get the posts caps, but after talking with Mike I got the peaked posts as he explained they were more traditional in the colonial style and I was glad I got them, the fence is very attractive.

The work was done quickly and efficiently with only one small problem--i.e., they did not realize that there was a corner post with pre-cut holes in two sides till after they had installed most of the fence--this required them to dig a bigger hole so they could remove the end post at the back corner with the corner post. The workers were pleasant but had very limited ability to communicate in English so we were not sure if they understood everything we discussed, though the most important issues seemed to be understood. Some rebuilding by us of the retaining wall was necessary at the end of the installation, which we knew would occur and is fine. Overall, we are very happy with the end product and the performance of this company. If we had realized the necessity of us cleaning out the old fencing with the brush, we would have saved ourselves $170.00, but 'live and learn'. We would highly recommend Armor Fence and if we go ahead with plans to replace the rest of the fencing on our property would certainly ask for an estimate from them.
Description of Work: Contract was to remove approximately 70 feet of old chain link fencing and replace with 80 feet of 6 foot high vinyl privacy fence, which stepped down to one 6 foot long by 5 foot high panel, and then to one 6 foot long by 4 foot high panel. This was in a straight line but on a 2-7% slope at the back corner of the property. The Fence was to follow the slope of the property. We were responsible for removing the brush--which we did and then realized that in order to prepare the space and remove the brush appropriately we needed to go ahead and remove the fence ourselves leaving only the posts. The fence followed the slope of the property including a small retaining wall at the back corner of the property running approximately 21 feet in length from 16" to ground level in height. Fence posts were buried 2 feet deep with dry cement per the contract--not sure how well this will work but need to wait for 3 days to have it set.

This company did a poor job on the installation of the privacy fence. The post wasn't 10 feet, had very little amount of concrete on some post and no concrete on others. The fence had a very noticeable lean on both sides. I had to pay almost $2000.00 to repair a fence that wasn't even a year old. I would not recommend this company and if you decide to use them I would advise you to supervise them from beginning to end of your project.
Description of Work: This company installed the fence for NVP Homes on February 9, 2011. We purchase the home in April 2011. We wasn't a member of Angie's List at the time and now that we are we would like for all the members to know the follow: I am very satisfied with the service that M.C. Fence and Deck has provided. The privacy fence was an added attraction on the purchase on our new home last year. The fence was installed by Armor Fence. This fence appeared to look solid during the walk-thru of the home. Approximately 2 -3 months after we had moved in we had notice that the gate was rubbing during opening and closing of the gate. The response from Armor Fence was so poor my wife had reported them to BBB. Once they received the notice from BBB, they had come out and adjusted the gate. The gate wasn’t the issue. But we didn’t know that at the time. Approximately 4-6 months ago the section of the privacy fence fell and several sections had a very noticeable lean. We had one contractor to come out and install the section that had fell and attempted to correct the noticeable lean. The section of the fence that was installed was higher than the other sections and the noticeable lean was still there. I had got to the point where I decided to join Angie’s List. Granted, I was skeptical, but I gave it a try anyway. M.C. Fence and Deck was the first contractor we have reached out to using Angie's List. Matt from M.C. Fence and Deck had come out promptly and visually saw the noticeable lean. He had stated that our fence installer, which was Armor Fence, had done a terrible job installing this fence. They not only didn’t use enough concrete on each post, the post wasn’t 10 feet. Matt did confirm that the post was less than 10 feet and they didn’t use enough concrete on the post, especially the post that were leaning. Matt also pointed out the reason the gate was rubbing was due to the post had a noticeable lean inward. This is what we had contacted Armor Fence almost a year ago to correct. However they stated that there wasn’t anything wrong and my wife was just giving them a hard time by reporting them to BBB. M.C. Fence and Deck showed up before our schedule time and had begun promptly. Since the cost of repair was expensive, they had setup a monthly payment plan. M.C. Fence and Deck had done an excellent job on repairing our privacy fence. I highly recommend M.C. Fence and Deck.

Armor came as a referral from a friend initially to do a simple rip and replace of weather damaged surface boards on the deck. As I was also shopping a Patio project, I found out that Armor also performed patio work and I asked for a quote. The overall price for both was pretty competitive as compared to other estimates and I agreed to employ them to do these two projects. First, they did the deck project to replace the boards. I have to admit, I wasn't crazy about the result. In fact, I have to admit it was rather sloppy/rushed looking. The boards were not cut cleanly such that there were several boards with substantial gaps between the end of the boards and the deck frame. Additionally, nails were gunned such that they literally were sticking out of the sides of the deck. I worked with them to clean up some of the problems but it resulted in it only being tolerable. Honestly, I can't recommend them for this kind of work based on my experience. I gave them lower marks because of these "silly" mistakes. Second, they did the patio project. This was a rather substantial project that required excavating and sloping the patio surface, putting in new techblock and installing plants, rock, etc. according to a design I had another company put together. In light of the deck project I was very concerned about its success. However, I have to readily admit that they more than made up for the sloppy deck project with a remarkable installation - note that the most important part is that the crew was completely different than the deck crew. I would happily employ them for this type of work again. I will comment that the lead guy I worked with (I don't honestly recall his name other than he was an older Caucasian gentlemen - he was not the owner) was very communication challenged and my impression is that he didn't like dealing too much with difficult situations/conflict. It was like pulling teeth at times to get him on the phone - he tended to like to rely on email. I would not recommend him. In summary, mixed results from my experience.

They did an excellent job all around. They were prompt for all meetings and for doing work. They were professional and conducted themselves appropriately. They left the yard in excellent condition, free of all debris. They followed up with us by phone and returned to complete a minor task that they had left undone because they didn't have the piece with them at the time. They performed all work beyond the standards that we expected. Our fence looks beautiful. I look out into the yard every morning and evening and smile. If all contractors were this reliable and professional, we wouldn't need Angie!
Description of Work: We called several contractors to install a wooden fence around the perimeter of our yard. Armor was the least expensive, so we chose them. I am not positive about the exact price, but it was around $4,000. The other estimates were all significantly higher - in the $6,000 range. The fence is a wood privacy fence, it's tall and is like a shadowbox (if that's what it's called) pattern. We wanted three gates so that we could get out to access firewood behind the house without walking all the way around from the side entrance and a side entrance on the other side so that hubby could get the lawnmower in and out of the shed. We expanded the area from the previous fence so they had to follow the plot plan. It's about a quarter acre lot and this was the back yard only, but it is a large back yard and we back up to a wooded area, so it's a matter of security also.

A quote was done for a privacy fence of approx 100 ft along the back of the yard with a standard gate. The quote also included a 4 ft tall picket fence along both sides of the house totaling about 170 in length with another standard gate and a double gate. Originally we were quoted for the pressure treated pine but I was interested in doing cedar and asked for a revised quote with a few extra feet on one side of the house. Upon being informed by my home association that I couldn't add the extra few feet in length, I asked to have it adjusted to the original length quoted and keep the cedar boards and pine posts/runners. Suffice it to say I was a pain as a customer but in the process of receiving the different quotes I realized that every time he quoted me a new number (even though I only needed the total dollar figure and not a whole new hand written proposal) that they were adding to the total as time went on. The end result was that the last quote was a few hundred more than the second even though it was the same materials with LESS length. I complained about it and received a corrected amount but it was still proportionally much more than the previous quotes per linear foot. We decided to continue with this company though because they still had both the better price and were much more responsive with better customer service skills (and handwriting) than many of the other companies we contacted. My husband and I stayed home the day of installation to watch the construction and be present and aware of how the work was done. They didn't speak fluent English (just the crew leader seemed to speak English okay) but my husband is fluent in Spanish and I am intermediate at speaking Spanish so we were able to communicate without any problems. They were very friendly and helpful when we had questions but I wouldn't say they were expert carpenters, just specialists at putting up these types of fences. We could have hired another contractor and had actual carpenters putting it together with better connections between the runners and posts but I couldn't convince my husband it was worth the extra $1100. Overall I'm satisfied that I got what we paid for and we didn't have a horror story out of the deal. It looks beautiful and we just need to get on the ball with cleaning and staining it to keep it that way. The gates are not very easy to open (very tight connections) but they work well to keep the gates locked and the backyard secure. I'm starting to notice some warping on the double gate and it may have to be addressed but at this point, about 3 months after it has been built, I don't have any major gripes other than my above mentioned concerns about the longevity of the fence.
Description of Work: A privacy fence was erected along the back of our property with a picket fence along one side and a small section on the other to connect with our neighbors fence. We had three gates including two single and one double gate installed. The posts were 6x6" on the gates 4x4" on the rest of the fence. We requested pressure treated pine for the posts and runners to save money and cedar for the slats (I'm hoping we'll have less warping even though we will need to stain them). The three man crew that arrived in the morning (around 8:30am) was a subcontractor of Armor and they worked very quickly. The crew leader didn't even take a lunch break when we bought them pizza. They managed to finish by early afternoon (around 2pm if I remember correctly). I noticed a few things that I wanted corrected but didn't bring them to attention right away because I wanted to look more thoroughly and they seemed like they were in a hurry to leave. We walked around and took pictures of all the issues we had with the construction and emailed the list over to our sales guy. He sent another crew (this time actual Armor employees instead of subcontractors) on another week day when we were both able to be around and they corrected everything that we asked such as messed up boards they tried to hide on the top of the privacy fence and gaps where the runners weren't even touching the posts. The one thing that we hadn't been aware of when we started this whole business of getting a fence was the standard practice around this area of how the concrete is done on the posts. They dig the holes, place the posts and then just cut open a bag of dry concrete to pour around it and tamp a little bit of soil on top. The apparent idea is that the moisture from the ground will wick into the concrete and harden it up over time. This allows them to have the fence built in such a short span of time without the need for two trips. My issue with this practice is that the only concrete I could find (after the fence was built of course) online that is labeled for this method is a special type of concrete called Quickcrete. I looked at the bags they used on my fence and they were just run of the mill generic concrete with the standard instructions to mix and pour. If I had known about this method (which supposedly everyone uses but I had never heard of before) I would have paid extra to have it done the old fashioned way. From everything I looked up about it and speaking with coworkers who have done construction, it's not a quality or long term way to build a fence. With only a one year warranty on the fence, I'm worried about how long it will last long term but there isn't much I can do about it now. Hopefully you will find this information informative and be fully aware of what you are paying for after reading this review. Another thing that I could have avoided with another more expensive contractor was to have the boards placed so they didn't make contact with the soil. I have quite a bit of work ahead of me to dig away the soil from the base of the fence where it was placed in contact with the ground or the soil from the post holes was left built up around the base of the fence. I need to do all this before we stain it and haven't gotten very far with my small amount of free time. That is the second major regret I have about this fence. If I don't fix this problem it will rot the boards more quickly in the long term. Contact with the soil will rot any wood over time, no matter if it's cedar or pressure treated pine (or even teakwood) which is why I'm guessing this fence will need to be redone in less than 15 years.

Overall it went great. We had originally been looking to have the fences moved and build some landscaping walls. Tim came to our home and provided estimates. He was knowledgable, personal able and easy to work with. We received estimates for moving the fence but needed to choose the rype if paces before getting a final estimate for the landscaping wall. When we called with the paver selection we were told unfornturely they were no longer doing hardscaping. We chose to go with Armor fence anyway just for the fence moving project We chose armor fence mostly because we enjoyed working with Tim. We worked with Brett for the scheduling and they were very accommodating. When the fence was moved, the front part was moved to exactly where it needed to be, but was quickly fixed. Overall a good experience.

Everything from the estimate to the install went smoothly and the company was very professional and responsive. The gate was hard to open and close and again the company was very professional and responsive in coming out and remedying the situation. Now in 2012 the gate's latching system has become warped and is hard to close and open so I called the company and spoke with an operator and then an estimator for an estimate to repair it and never received a call back.

Bob Love was great to work with. He gave us an estimate and an approximate date to complete the work. He was back within a week to start the work with his team. Everything went smoothly and we had the fence completed in 1 day. The price was a little expensive compared to several neighbors who had it completed for $2800 but we were thrilled with the results! It looks much better than we thought! We had it stained the very next day!
Description of Work: We needed a fence installed to keep our pets safe and secure and add a little privacy.

Armor Fence and Deck was highly recommended by a colleague who said that the quality of their work was second to none. So, we decided to give them a try. After contacting Armor Fence and Deck, a representative from the company stopped by a day later and was pleasant, professional and knowledgeable. Of the 6 companies we met with from the Spring through Fall of 2011, Armor Fence and Deck provided the most detailed information, and the most comprehensive analysis of the state of our current deck than all the other companies we met with. Also, other companies only offered to install Trex, but through Armor Fence and Deck, we became aware that there are other materials available and that they would work with us to determine the best material for our needs and budget. We asked many questions by email throughout the decision-making process, and our questions were promptly answered. Because of how Armor Fence worked with us -- we felt 100% sure that we had hired the right company – and the work they performed confirmed that we had done so. In the Fall of 2011, Armor Fence and Deck demolished our old deck and built a beautiful new deck made of AZEK composite material. The guys that did the work were great to deal with, absolute perfectionists, and were eager to ensure that we were pleased with the results. Our new deck is beautiful and has exceeded our expectations. Armor's price was also very competitive. We would definitely hire them again in the future, and eagerly recommend them to people we know or meet that are looking for a quality company to install a beautiful new deck or fence!
Description of Work: -- Demolished a 21 year old wood deck. -- Built a new deck with railing cap using AZEK PVC composite material and pressure treated wood.

They had a great price, great workmanship, came when they said they would, finished when they said they would, came back when I asked them to, and I would recommend them for fencing. I give them high ratings and would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: They did work for me four years ago.
