Description of Work: We were very pleased with the work and professionalism of Generations Flooring. In the house we purchased, they installed flooring in two rooms and re-refinished the whole house. When we purchased the house, there were water stains in two rooms and it had the 70's style finish. When they completed the job - it looked like a whole different house! This is a company that has 3 generations of the family working in the company and the quality of work was awesome! Would highly recommend!!

Eric and his father and their team were terrific. The job was a very big one as we had to move all furniture and ourselves out of the house for 3.5 weeks. We had 2 additional concerns with our project: 1) leveling out our den floors that seemed to be sagging at the two longer ends 2) removing carpet from the stairs and trying to get them to match the rest of the floors. We received estimates from 2 other companies (3 in total). Eric and his father were the only ones who we trusted and fully believed that the product they were selling was something they would 100% stand by. In fact 1 of the other companies was so busy bad-mouthing other installers that he never had enough time to convince us that he was any good. We went with Eric because we trusted him, and he delivered! The stairs were pine, but Eric was able to successfully match the rest of the house while the other companies suggested installing a brand new staircase that would have cost $2000+. We are so pleased with how the floors turned out, and all of our friends, family and neighbors have said the same. Eric was so thorough and was sure to come back to tie up any loose ends, including installing closet track rollers that were adversely affected by removing the carpeting and installing the floor. This was not part of the original estimate, but Eric did us right by fixing everything. I would highly recommend. These guys are the hardest working guys around, and their focus is on customer service first. A++++
Description of Work: Installed hardwoods on 50% of 1st floor and throughout 2nd floor. Installation included removal of all existing carpeting, leveling of den floor, sanding of existing 50% of hardwoods on 1st floor, sanding and staining of all new floor.

Everything went very well. The house was unoccupied so Eric handled the whole project while we were out of town. From the stain selection to installation of the trim, the whole project went very smoothly. Eric is a very detailed person so it was such a pleasure working with him. Generations went above and beyond in every facet of the project and I would strongly recommend them for your sand and refinish needs. We also got 3 different estimates and they were competitive on price. To sum it up, Eric is a true flooring guy who takes pride in his work and who is always accessible to any questions or requests.

Our new home has about 75% hardwood floors, all of which were in need of serious repair. We were referred to Generations by friends who had recently worked with them and had a positive experience. Overall, we were very happy with the quality and professionalism of Erik and his team and would absolutely recommend them. We are first time home buyers and not at all knowledgeable about the floor refinishing process and Erik took pains to educate us and explain each decision every step of the way. Their customer service and responsiveness are excellent and Erik really went out of his way to make sure we were happy. The job on our home took about 2 weeks and ran into quite a few issues along the way. As the carpet and old patches were taken up, it became clear that extra work would be required to even out several areas. Erik provided several options for each area and we took his recommendation for each, which turned out very well. His team was very flexible about working on Saturday and dealing with other delays (outside of their control) to complete our job in a reasonable amount of time. The newly refinished floors look beautiful and the quality of the work done by Generations is apparent in all of the details. It is clear they take pride in their work and value their customers.

I purchased a "Big Deal" through Angie's List - refinish hardwood floors in 2 rooms (up to 400 sq ft total) for $499, a $999 value. This is a project that we have needed to do for about 10 years, and seeing the "Big Deal" enticed me to finally get it done. I needed to have 3 rooms refinished, so I knew that there would be an upcharge for the additional square footage. Erik (the owner) contacted me promptly and set up an appointment to come out and look at the job. Erik arrived as scheduled, measured our rooms and discussed some options. We wanted the floors stained to a darker color than the natural wood, so that was an additional charge. We also upgraded to three coats of finish rather than two, and upgraded to a commercial grade finish instead of the standard grade. Erik explained that the sanding process would potentially damage the shoe moldings, so we opted to have new shoe moldings installed. The biggest price adder was for the flush mount inlayed vent covers on the air conditioning vents. I had installed these in my kitchen when we replaced that flooring and I really liked the appearance, so we included that service as well. The total cost of the adders and upgrades was significant, but the price for each item seemed reasonable, and Erik was not at all pushy in selling the upgrades. We scheduled the work and Erik came back to our house and we signed the final contract. Erik sanded down an area of our floor, then mixed and applied several colors of stain so we could pick the exact shade that we wanted. He suggested an additional step, a "water pop", which entailed applying water to the bare wood before staining to emphasize the grain patterns. We liked the way that looked, and Erik included that without any additional charge even though it involved additional work for his crew. Erik and his father (hence the name "Generations") and a helper arrived promptly on the first day of the job. They put up plastic sheeting over doorways, windows, fireplace, TV etc., and Erik's father installed the recessed vents on the first day. The full crew came on the second day, and they completed the sanding and water pop. They applied the stain on Day 3, then came back the following day (a Saturday) to apply the first coat of polyurethane finish. That step was originally scheduled for Day 3 but they made a special trip on Saturday so they could do the water pop and keep the completion date the same. They applied the second and third coats the following Monday and Tuesday, and Erik's father came back on Wednesday to install the new shoe molding. Everyone we dealt with was completely professional from start to finish. They did a great job minimizing dust infiltration. The quality of the finished work was outstanding. Erik was in touch with us on a daily basis so that we would know what time they planned to arrive at our home, as the schedule was different on some days. Erik definitely went the extra mile to exceed our expectations. For instance, we had a wreath on our front door that fell off and broke while they were moving equipment into the house. I told Erik not to worry, that had happened to us before and it was not their fault, the wreath was not hung securely. But Erik went out and found the identical wreath and bought it for us to replace the broken one. This was by far the best experience I have ever had with a contractor working in my home. I am an anal retentive engineer and I tend to nit pick the workmanship of contractors, but I had no issues at all with the quality of this work. I think the price was very fair, but I did not shop around for prices. I rated the price "excellent" even though I do not have a point of comparison, because the quality of their work would have been a good value even at a higher price! I have recommended and will continue to recommend Generations Hardwood Flooring to my friends who are in the market for floor refinshing services. Thanks, Erik!
Description of Work: Generations Hardwood Flooring refinshed the hardwood floors in three rooms. They sanded and stained the floors, and applied three coats of finsh. They also installed flush mounted inlayed vent covers on the air conditioning vents, and finished and installed new shoe molding in all of the rooms.

I purchased the $499 promotion: "Up to two rooms (200 sq.ft. per room, total 400 sq.ft.) of hardwood floor sanding and refinishing, using two (2) coats of water-based system and Bona Kemi DCS Green Guard Certified Dustless Vacuum System". The Big Deal price was half off of the normal cost of $999 for this amount of work for a savings of $500. To this I added 145' sq. ft, of refinishing and repair/patching of about 25 sq. ft. which included new oak boards and labor ($440); an upgrade to the water-based commercial finish; added a third coat to the whole floor ($508); and chose oak shoe molding and staining for the entire floor ($338). The total came to $1785. The contractor, Erik, came out and measured and went over the choices I had for the floor job - he was very thorough, answered all of my questions, and did NOT try to sell me anything. My floor is obviously much bigger than the 400 sq. ft. in the original Big Deal so I knew I would be paying more from the start and I knew I wanted additional items, like the commercial grade surface and extra coat. When I made the additions to the deal I described above. I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the price was. We set a date and I moved out all of the furniture from the affected rooms. Erik came out on time every day and finished the job in five days per our agreement. The repair was excellent and was completed on the first day (Monday). While Erik would have substituted an oil-based finish if I so chose, I'm glad I went with the water based finish. I didn't have to be out of my house and could come home after the daily coats had completed drying, generally at about 5 P.M. each day for three days, though we had to walk on the floor in stockinged feet. On the fifth day (Friday), Erik came back for some touch ups and the job was done. We stayed in socks through the weekend for some extra hardening, but this was hardly a big deal. I moved all the furniture back and voila, all done! Overall, this was a great deal, not just for the price, but because of the quality of the installation of the new floor to the damaged areas and the sanding and refinishing of the entire floor. The finish looks and feels much better than the original job that was done when the house was new over 18 years ago. Though the total cost was higher because of the items I added and the larger size of my floor, I definitely saved a lot more than the $500 discount in the original deal. two other estimates I'd received in the past averaged about $2200 for just sanding and refinishing and no repair included! While I'm happy for the discount, I would defintely go with Generations Hardwood Flooring again even at full price - the quality of the work is that good.

We have nothing but praise for the work done by Erik, Jon and their crew. They were thoroughly considerate and professional throughout the process, which took over a week from start to finish. They took care to seal off cabinets from dust and used a professional dust collection system. They demonstrated several stains to provide us with the precise stain we desired. The sanding job was considerable, as the wide flooring had "cupped" - no corners were cut here. The new molding was cut and installed with precision, even around odd angles.
Description of Work: This job involved sanding, staining, and finishing with 3 coats of water-based finish about 900 s.f. of wide oak flooring in our home. New oak shoe molding was cut and installed as well.

We first met Erik Sivertsen when he arrived at our home to survey the job. He was prompt, pleasant, polite and professional. He told us he is a perfectionist and that was evident in the completed work. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Erik and his crews if you have hardwood floors that need re-finished. They arrived when they said they would and clearly described what they were about to do. They were very careful with our home as they worked. They put down plastic sheeting to protect floors and walls on the way to the rooms where the work took place. They literally vacuumed their way out of the house when finished and left no detectable dust in their path. Other than beautiful floors there was no evidence that they had been there. We have hot water baseboard heat so they had to work closely around that and a couple obstructions in the closets and did a perfect and detailed job. There wasn't a quarter square inch of floor that went unfinished. I can't say enough about the job they did. The finish was beautiful, the house was left clean and they behaved perfectly through the whole job. The price we paid was well below what we expected due to the Angie's List Big Deal offer. I am a hobbiest woodworker and I had considered renting equipment and doing it myself but this price enticed me to leave it to a pro and I'm glad I did. After this experience, even at regular price, I would leave it to Generations Hardwood. Call them.
Description of Work: Generations re-finished 400 square feet of 55 year old oak wood flooring in two bedrooms of my home. The floors were in good shape but looked pretty bad. Wax had been used on them and it had discolored and become marked up with water spots. They carefully covered areas of flooring and walls to protect them while moving equipment and supplies to the rooms where the work took place. Their dust collection system left no detectable dust in the house when they departed.

I would recommend this process and Gen to any and every one!. While my pine floors will get "dinged" because of the soft wood, I am confident that the finish will last much longer than the poly coat. Every one who enters the house comments on the warm color and great finish of the floors. As mentioned above, everything was handled professionally and timely. It was a pleasure to have the Gen team in my home. When we decide to redo our upstairs, Generations Hardwood is the only company we will call!
Description of Work: We asked Generations Hardwood Flooring (Gen) and one other floor refinisher to give us estimates for refinishing our extremely beat-up 30-yr old pine tongue-and-groove floors. Both prices were similar, but we selected Gen because 1) we liked the fact that we only had to be out of the house one night with the water-based finish, 2) we appreciated Eric's knowledge and experience with this process, 3) we were given very clear information about what the company would and would not be able to do, 4) the price seemed fair, especially with the extras we received with out Angie's List membership! We rented an EZ box and moved everything out from our downstairs so that Gen could work. On the first day, they arrived on time and did a great job of sanding the floors. Eric came by and patiently waited as my husband and I debated floor stain color. The next day, they again started on time and put stain down very consistently. On the days they added the water-based top coat, they arrived early enough so that we were able to tip toe to our stairs and sleep in our own rooms with no problem of fumes! The job was done on time and the floors now glow!

I would recommend them to anyone......I can't say enough good things about this company.
Description of Work: We had two rooms and an entrance foyer to be refinished. The floors probably had not been done in 20 years from the looks of them especially the entrance foyer. The men kept in close touch with me weeks prior to starting the work and called the day before to make sure we were ready. They came in on the day of the work like true professionals, covered all the access doors to prevent dust from traveling. The whole process had been explained to me prior to work being done so I knew exactly what to expect. Upon completion they explained how to properly clean the floor and left an applicator and cleaner. Having been a contractor myself I was totally impressed with the professionalism and most of all the quality of the work.

Description of Work: It took about a week to get a return call. Eric was heading on vacation and said he would call the following Monday which I then had to call Thursday. I will acknowledge Eric is very knowledged on woodfloors and the different types of sealants. He came for an estimate and did a patch test on a 3 24 yr old rooms and a foyer that we had in a house that was just purchased. The previous owner had left some huge area rugs so when we walked through the house I was looking at the wear and tear done to the floors I could see in the walk through . Although Eric explained the difference btwn sanding the wood and just resealing, he never suggested that I make the decision after removing the carpets which due to allergies told him I was not keeping. In addition, knowing my situation never offered to even help lift the carpets in his 2 visits. Thus, Eric felt just buffing and sealing would be ok based on patch test. So it was not until my family was helping move out everything that you could see how discolored the wood really was and could not be fixed with just a buff. Most could say an honest mistake but anyone in flooring may think differently. Because this changed what needed to be done (and I was not against paying to have the whole area sanded and sealed just overwhelemed at themoment). Eric called the next day and felt that 'we will never make you happy"I and declined the job. I might add this was weeks of my patience of his busy schedule, his hurt hand, and other minor delays and bad days on his part. The only thing questioned was him charging $300 to remove carpet and prep room for a 350 sq ft room. We had 2 other companies come after who charged btwn $100 and $150 (had a friend willing to do it for less!) If he were so experienced and can make these quick decisions of our unhappiness, I felt as a professional, he should have recommended we lift the carpet on his initial assessment since this was my first time dealing with wood floors. We were able to get the floors completed by another Angie's list company and had a very positive experience all in one week. Eric is certainly knowleged and even polite but maybe overscheduled.. not sure where exactly his expertise fell.

Thank you for this review. While I thought I had clearly explained the options regarding your floors, including the option to have them refinished, it now appears that there may have been some miscommunication. Granted that my schedule wasn't as flexible as it normally was, I didn't realize that you believed that I was taking "weeks of [your] patience of [my] busy schedule". It was my recollection that it may have been a week to ten calendar days from your first call to my withdrawing our offer for your floors. While I thought I had fully explained the options regarding your floors, it is not the company's policy to move furniture and carpet to determine the condition of the flooring under the carpet during the site visit for the estimate. As a courtesy to our customers, we will quote on moving furniture and removing carpet but we understand if they want to save some money they could get it done for less from others. I did note on your estimate what the condition of the flooring might be with the buff and re-coat option. After giving you the estimate on what you wanted us to do and the comments from you, and your family members, I realized that my company was not the contractor that you needed to do the work. Since you had not signed the contract that I had sent to you, it was at that time that I decided to withdraw my offer to do your flooring work. I am glad that you were able to find a contractor that was able to do the work in the price range that you wanted.

I recently discovered I had hardwood floors under the carpet in the family room of my house when the carpet was pulled up due to water damage. The floors were in terrible shape, but I wanted to see if they could be refinished. I found Erik through Angie's List and his family's flooring company, Jet Services. He came out, assessed my needs, and provided an estimate. Erik did a great job keeping in touch with me throughout the process and made sure all my questions were answered. While the work was taking place he was very flexible in accommodating my schedule. The newly refinished floors look amazing. I never imagined they could look this good. It really looks like i have a beautiful brand new floor. I cannot recommend Erik and his services enough. The quality of his work is amazing and I really appreciated the level of communication he provided during the entire process.

I went out an received quotes from several vendors on Angie's List and ended up going with Generations for the following reasons: 1) Price was fair2) One of the few providers that uses the newer Bona Water Based products3) Great one on one interaction (personal service and you are not just a check) I tend to be a bit hands on with these projects and expect that my contractor is a partner rather than an I pay them and don't get involved. Erik was outstanding and the floors look awesome. One of my neighbors works for a major Dalton, GA carpet firm and recommended Erik as well so I knew I had made the correct choice. Most of the quotes were in alignment (+,- 10%) but as stated above, most of the bidders did not use the new product (which dries in like 3+ hours and is 75% cured after 24 hours with none of the smells so we only had to be out of the house for the first day vs. 3-4). I would used Generation's again! If a company receives praise from me, you know they are good.

I cannot recommend Erik and Generations Flooring enough. I found Erik through Angie’s List, actually through his family’s 30+ flooring business, Jet Services. Erik has since started his own hardwood flooring business, Generations Flooring, and brings to it many years of knowledge and experience. We were very impressed with his professionalism, knowledge, patience and expertise. He took time to explain the process of refinishing our floors in detail, shared candid opinions on our options without trying to “upsell” us, and kept us informed throughout the process of each day’s work. The work he did refinishing our heartpine floors was remarkable – completely transformative and worth every penny! The floors had been neglected for years, and now they look brand new, but still retain the character of the old wood. His estimate was actually not the lowest one we received, but we were so impressed with Erik’s expertise that we felt confident he would do a good job. He is also just a pleasure to work with – will definitely recommend to everyone we know who is in the market for new or refinished hardwood flooring.

My husband and I have an older victorian house in Bon Air/ Richmond, Virginia- the home had lovely hardwood floors, but they were in horrible shape. They were splintering, had screws in them and were very worn. We called multiple places to give us estimates on re-finishing the floors and most tried to "up sell" us and have us purchase new hardwood flooring. However, we wanted to keep the existing floors, as they had so much character and it is much more eco-friendly. When we met Jon Sivertsen of Generations Hardwood Flooring, LLC- we knew he was the right guy for the job the moment we met him. he was extremely knowledgable, answered our numerous questions, and gave us many options from replacing the part of all of the floors, to simply refinishing the floors to their former glory. He gave us his honest opinions and was confident in his ability and knowledge. We chose to re-finish the floors. His price was extremely reasonable given his skill and the amount of work. The week before our project was set to start he came to our home and put several stains on our floors so we could review them over the weekend and chose a stain color that suited our taste. He also walked us through the process, gave us a timetable and answered last minute questions. He spent about 1 hour with us that day. When the job began, he and his crew (his son works with him- hence the name Generations) were so polite and kind. They arrived on time, and stayed late to complete the work each day. They worked so neatly. They put plastic up all over my home to protect, art, tvs, bookshelves, kitchen cabinets, they helped us move some large furniture and dusted and cleaned when they were finished!!! They were so trustworthy- we gave them a key to our home so they could come and go as needed. They told us that we should not stay in the home given the fumes of the stain and were on time with the timeline so we could make plans accordingly. They communicated with us each day via phone or email to update us on the day's progress and give us a status report. I cannot recommend this company enough. They went above and beyond and were so wonderful to work with- oh, and the floors look AMAZING. Honestly, they are perfect and I had no idea they could look so good. Everyone who comes to our home remarks on how great the floors are!
Description of Work: We hired Generations to sand, stain and refinish existing hardwood flooring in our home. THe job was huge as the floors were in terrible shape. In fact other companies from whom we received estimates stated that the floors were in such bad condition that our only option was to replace them. Generations is so skilled that they were able to restore our existing floors to their former glory! The floors look great.
