Description of Work: We hired Richards Construction to demo an existing recreation room and rebuild a mudroom and garage addition. The 90-day project took over 6 months to complete. Two or three of the delays were due to decision-making, but most were due to Richards Construction's disorganization and lack of responsiveness. During the entirety of the project we lived under tarps, mostly exposed to the elements (our ceiling was missing, an opening in the floor was left open into a crawl space, and an interior wall was 'accidentally' knocked down during the first day of demolition). We had previously renovated kitchens and basements, but never been involved in a project of this scope. Apparently, that was the same for Richards Construction. For many, many days, and sometimes weeks at a time, only one worker would show up. Often no one showed up. The quality of the work was pretty good for the most part, especially the tile, carpentry and electrical. The electricians were really top notch. The site manager is a great guy, really knowledgeable and talented, good communicator. But some personal circumstances limited him from a more active role in the job halfway through. And the owner, Larry, was not a sufficient substitute. His communication skills are limited--confusing and time-consuming at best, often inaccurate and pushy at its worst. Collaboration between team members was abysmal. The company came highly recommended by a good friend, but we imagine her job was completed when the company was more financially secure. After pushing a start date before the final architectural drafts were submitted, Larry put us in a terrible financial position--but he didn't seem to recognize his role in the backward order of things, nor did he take responsibility or initiate solutions to the problems. He pushed us for money before deadlines were met and seemed unconcerned that we were unable to qualify for a construction loan after he prematurely demolitioned half of our house. He seemed in significant financial duress, which negatively impacted the job's timeline and coordination, the quality of recommended materials and our ability to fund the project. There were also times when major decisions were delayed due to unknown circumstances (we imagine that there wasn't enough money to show up most days and there were other larger jobs taking priority over ours). As homeowner's fairly new to this large of a project, we were dependent on Larry to provide reliable information and proactive direction. I'm not sure he was a good match for that need. Many of our creative ideas were dismissed and Larry's feedback seemed to be limited to one or two vendors. Unfortunately, things did not end well. We excused them from the site early after months of chasing them down to come wrap things up. We hired other contractors to finish the unfinished work. We had hoped to hire Richards Construction to renovate our kitchen and main living areas, but we will definitely be going elsewhere. Thankfully, we got a really good architect out of the experience. I would not recommend Richards Construction, nor would I use them again.

Description of Work: Complete kitchen and powder room remodels, gas fireplace replacement, and flooring. The quality of the work and materials was excellent and the results are beautiful. The price was reasonable. The carpentry, drywall, plumbing and electrical people all work for Richards (not sub-contractors) and they are all masters at what they do. Our issues were in communication with management as to what was going to be done when, their inability to provide us with a schedule, and little visibility of how our changes were going to affect the bottom line. It worked out mostly OK in the end, but was very frustrating during the chaos.

Description of Work: Gave me an estimate for remodeling a townhouse. The Mr. Richards would not listen to me when I told him what I wanted to do. He wanted to tell me what I should do. Even his assistant saw what his boss was doing to me and later in a social situation apologized to me for it.

We had a personal reference from a friend of my husband's parents. We called, and Larry came out to meet with us at the home that we had purchased (in foreclosure). He provided us with a number of ideas that we had not considered. We ended up remodeling more than we had originally considered, but are quite glad that we had it done prior to moving in. Kaki at Richards was great to work with picking out countertops, tile, etc., and the crew did a great job on the remodel. They were very professional and the quality is very good. We would recommend working with Richards.
Description of Work: Richards Construction helped us with a complete kitchen, master bedroom, and master bath remodel.

The gentlemen who did the work were professional, extremely knowledgeable, considerate, etc. I do wish they had been involved from day one as we may have done things a bit differently given their sage advice. Communication with project manager in the office and the workmen did not seem the best. They did fall a bit behind schedule which interfered with our vacation, causing further delays. Not a big deal. Still, as is typical, some obstacles came up along the way and were met with genuine consideration and concern for a quality job. Which is exactly what we got. I do wish they had someone to paint and wallpaper. They were sure to point out that this service was not offered. Must be they haven't found anyone up to their standards!
Description of Work: Ripped out the whole bathroom and started over. Footprint remained the same, but laid slate on floors, shower and 4' wainscoting, hung new mirrors, lights, installed new sinks and all plumbing fixtures, toilets in all bathrooms and under-cabinet lighting in kitchen.

There were a couple of days that we had expected workers to come out, but they did not. This turned out not to be a problem, though because they made up the work very quickly. They were otherwise very respectful of our time and space. They finished over one week early!!! We will without a doubt use them again if we remodel our bathrooms!
Description of Work: Richards removed everything from our kitchen (Floors, cabinets, appliances, etc.) and repaired a problem with the floors, installed a new ceramic tile floor, a new sliding glass door, cabinets, quartz countertops, sink, appliances and under cabinet lighting.

Larry Richards came to the house personally and gave me his best thoughts on how to fix what a previous (unqualified) contractor had left. He was quite frank with his assessment which I found reassuring. He was forced to deal with some challenges after taking over someone else's work. He kept me informed about the order status and when he said his guys would be at my house, they were there. His guys showed up promptly at 8 am, were courteous and polite, and wore shirts bearing the company logo. They cleaned up after themselves to the point that had I not seen the work, I would not have known they were there working. When a shortage of supplies arose, Larry did not charge me for the extra cost stating, "it was my mistake." His carpenters are superior. They capped off the trim in a minor but very professional manner that others may not have bothered with. I will be hiring Richards Construction on my next project!
Description of Work: Finish a job left incomplete by another (unscrupulous) contractor. The job entailed mostly finish work consisting of installing furniture type paneling on the backs of cabinets, installing trim molding, repairing tiles, removing (unnecessary) columns, and repairing drywall.

Richards Construction had done our neighbor's bath and we were pleased with the workmanship we saw. We met with Larry and his designer for a planning session and fairly in depth discussion on what we envisioned for the space and cost. The design we finally settled on was a compromise that Incorporated most of top end features and still fit the limited space of a 1980's tract house. Larry, Kay and his dedicated crew were a pleasure to work with. Scheduling was not an issue - once they started they worked through completion without major breaks in work. The subs were timely and considerate of our work schedule. They cleaned up after every day and tried their best to keep dirt/dust level low. Larry and his crew were very easy to work changes with and they were very clear each time a change was made as to whether there was additional cost to be incurred before hand. All-in-all we are very happy with the work and wouldn't change a thing!
Description of Work: Upstairs Master Bath Remodel - everything gutted and replaced. New shower with "shower tower"; new cabinets; sinks; fixtures; SaniJet whirlpool; heated floor; recessed lights; and walk-in closet.

The final result is outstanding. I would recommend Richards construction because Larry is creative, they show up when they say they are going to, they were careful with my pets and house, and their workmanship is solid. They will fix anything you identify as a problem (although sometimes they will propose shortcuts, just decline). The one caution is that if you diverge from their established procedures they are not very flexible; I could not find tile I liked at their approved list of places, and found some at another store. This proved to be a huge problem; the tile place was difficult to work with, and Richards Construction was very passive-aggressive in dealing with them. I ended up mediating between the two, and the tile order had to be re-done twice, resulting in a significant delay. We experienced similar problems when we decided we needed a ceiling fan because re-routing a vent had resulted in reduced airflow. But it's done now and it looks great. They came through.
Description of Work: We re-did our entire kitchen, removed portions of the walls to open it up, eliminated soffits, and replaced floor, counters, cabinets, appliances. We moved the sink and the refrigerator.

They had some great ideas for us. We were not sure how we wanted the area to be. This project was constructed in our basement and there was nothing there except for one large room in the basement before. It looks beautiful and we are so happy to have found them.
Description of Work: They did a major project that included an entire bath, electrical, plumbing, flooring, walls, tile and fixtures. They also designed a hallway that was not there. The costs include labor and materials.

Larry Richards was extremely helpful in designing the kitchen, making several suggestions that are now our favorite features in the room. The crew was extremely productive and professional and our job took just one month from start to finish. There was one snafu along the way which they quickly took responsibility for and offered solutions about; they then paid the bulk of the cost for the new cabinets required to fix the problem. We are thrilled with the results and would recommend Richards to anyone.

Very polite workers. Kept us involved to what work was being completed. Finished with what the contract said. Within the time frame. Was hard to contact but because they were moving, but after the move they were easy to get a hold of. Price was the best out of four companies that we compared. They don't paint.
Description of Work: They took the whole bathroom apart striped down from the bare. Put in new dry wall, new tub, shower, new vanity, top, sink, vanity, and toilet. They hauled off all of the debris. They also installed a new light and a mirror medicine cabinet.
