Big Steve's returned our initial contact within 24 hours. They came out promptly to do the estimate on the trees and were friendly and professional. As stated previously, the only reason we went with the other company was the pricing.
Description of Work: We asked Big Steve's to come out and give us an estimate for removing a VERY large tree and trimming/pruning two other very large trees in our yard. Both of the estimates we got for tree work came from licensed, insured companies. However, we ended up going with another company because their pricing was about $500 less than Big Steve's estimate. Other than that, though, they seemed like a professional, friendly group of folks.

The crew arrived 90 minutes late but they were courteous and professional. They performed all the work outlined on the estimate, calling us outside from time to time to ensure they were doing what we wanted done. They finished in about 4 1/2 hours and were especially careful in cleaning up the debris - raking and blowing all the areas where they'd been working (even the roof of the sun room).

Steve came for an estimate at the appointed time and took the time to carefully go over my request. He also visually examined the trees for any other problems and noted that a class 1 prunning was recommended on the large oak . He left with a detailed estimate which listed which trees would be trimmed and how many limbs would be removed. I responded to them in a week and set a date for the work to commence. On that date the 4 man crew arrived and spent the day cutting and lowering limbs carefully avoiding hitting the house. I was impressed with the care they took and the safety considerations they followed. They performed as a well rehearsed team. Following the removal the crew cleaned up the lawn and driveway in a manner that when they left one would not have known that tree work had been done on the property.
Description of Work: I had three estimates for trimming of four large trees on my property which had limbs over the roof . I hired Big Steve's Tree Care to remove all overhanging limbs near my home.

We had a large dead tree removed and several trees trimmed in our yard. Big Steve's did a terrific job. They were quick to respond to our request for an estimate, offered some helpful advice on different options for dealing with a struggling tree, and their quote was lower than another we received. They showed up as scheduled and did a good job. When we realized one of the tree stumps hadn't been ground, we called and they immediately came out to take care of it--and wouldn't accept payment until it was all done. Highly recommend. Would definitely use this company again.

I contacted BIg Steve to remove a large maple tree and several small holly trees from my yard. Steve was friendly and promised to swing by the house in a couple of days and send me a written estimate. Unfortunately he did not write down my e-mail address correctly and an estimate was not received. When contacted again, he promptly sent me the written estimate and apologized for miss-sending it. However, the price was more than tripple the cost of a different company from Angie's List, so, we decided not to use Big Steve.

There is no way that the scope of the work was the same. When customers get estimates they should make sure that all the companys have the same amount of work on there estimates. Also all customers should check that all the company's that could be hired have liability insurance as well as workers compensation insurance. Liability insurance only covers property damage not injury to the people you have hired to do the work. Workers compensation insurance is a separate insurance that less than 1/3 of tree company's have. This also could produce a considerable lower estimate. Big steves tree care has LIABILITY INSURANCE AND WORKERS COMPENSATION COVERAGE . We are also hold a Virginia business license as well as a Fairfax county business licence.

During the "Derecho" a very large branch fell from one of our trees. The tree had a large trunk, with 40-50 foot branches starting about 8 feet up. It became apparent to us that the tree needed to come down to avoid potential damage to our home should we experience another derecho or more likely, hurricane. We called Steve's and another company for estimates. Steve got back to us after a few days-- an understandable delay due to the overwhelming tree damage and need for tree removal throughout the area, and the lower priority of our job. We were presented with an estimate for the work, which I considered to be reasonable, with a description of the collateral services (wood removal) to be performed. Steve called to schedule removal, and informed me that I did not need to be present. (I was ultimately able to be home). On "removal day" a crew of about 6 men arrived at 8 am. The tree removal took all day, and by the time the last large chunk of the trunk was removed, it was approaching 8 pm. The crew used appropriate safety gear. and made every effort to minimize impact to our yard. Certainly, with a job this size, the lawn got chopped up a bit, but not overly so. In order to remove the large trunk segments, it was necessary to remove one of our fences so that a Bobcat could get into the yard. The fence was replaced. The foreman and crew chief communicated with me, and were forthcoming with their plans for the project. (Interesting note...During the tree removal, the crew found a nest with 2 baby squirrels in it. They relocated the squirrels and nest to another tree.)

I ordered a face cord of firewood from Big Steve's. They were very professional and prompt with the delivery. The wood was seasoned oak; however, the only negative was that the wood was very wet (water wet, not green) and coverd with fungus. I couldn't use the wood because it was so wet, so I stored it away for next season. I've ordered from them before and the wood was fine. Not sure what happened with this load. I'll give them another try though.

While our front, old oak looked a bit naked at first, we were VERY happy we had this done. The Derecho did not cause any limb breakage - only minor twigs to fall. The cherry tree & stump were safely removed with no damage to our water meter and line. Once we described he work to be done, we did not need to remain on the property for Big Steve's to finish the job, which was convenient since I needed to return to work. Big Steve cleaned and hauled all of the wood away as we requested.

Arrived in the morning and took down the rotting tree first. Spent the rest of the day taking down the big big tree.
Description of Work: After the storms that have hit our area, we were very concerned about a couple of trees in our back yard. We called 8 different tree services to get estimates on having the trees removed. 3 didn't call back but the other 5 did. Out of the 5 estimates we got, Big Steve's was the best. I felt like a couple of them may have been giving us a high estimate because they knew we wanted the trees down soon. Big Steve came by when he said he would and after we told him we'd like him to do the work, he set it up for the following week. They took down two trees, one of them very very big. They managed to do it with a crew of 4 people and did it in one day. Awesome! Would use them again if we need any tree service

Steve gave me the best estimate of five companies interviewed and he came across to me as both trustworthy and competent. I had to wait a couple of weeks after hiring Big Steve's due to their workload, but the team that came to cut down the tree was very punctual (11:30 am) and had the job done in under an hour. However, I had to wait the entire afternoon before the stump-grinding crew showed up. I called Steve twice to find out when I could expect them, but he did not return my calls. The crew showed up at 7:00 pm. They did a very good job of grinding the roots in a tight area around the fence. (I think "Communication" should be another Angie's List rating factor. Beyond "responsiveness," did the company share information you needed to know, in my case e.g., you might have to wait the entire day for the crew(s) to show up; reschedule other appointments; ask your neighbor to move her car so the crew can park their tree grinder closer to the tree; the gate to your back yard should be wider than the width of the stump grinder, etc.). This is important info the client needs to know and may not be knowledgeable enough to bring up, and especially important when we share common space with neighbors--it impacts them too and the client needs the opportunity to communicate with them. Of the five companies I called, Big Steve's was one of the top two. I actually e-mailed the other top company first to offer them the job, but they did not respond. I called them a week later and was told someone would be calling to schedule a date and time. Nobody called, so I called Big Steve's who called me back the next day. The other company called me a week later to inform me that a crew was being sent THAT day. I told them to cancel the crew since I already hired Big Steve's. Of the other companies called: -One did not bother to call me back or meet with me although I was home at the time. They came by and left me an estimate on my door. -One called me back several days later and told me about all the "equipment breakdowns," then showed up several hours late for our meeting, then gave me only an oral estimate, nothing in writing. -Still another company's owner rolled his eyes when I asked him to move his truck from my neighbor's parking space then refused to do so. He then gave me an estimate for $675! These were all Angie's List A-rated companies that severely dilutes my opinion of Angie's List ratings. I would hire Big Steve's again because they did do a very good job, but I hope Steve improves his responsiveness and communication with his customers.

The biggest problem with this job was that it was a non emergency job. He wanted it done in the middle of one of the biggest storms in Virginias history (6-29-12) I accept full responsibility for the calls. But what this customer should understand is that in the middle of a storm of this size your going to have to have patience. Not only for us but angies list contractors in general. Thank you for the response.

We needed to prep our yard area for a major relandscaping project. We contacted 4 companies on Angies list, three of which were highly recommended and the other one so-so. Steve's came in with the low bid (including the Angies discount) of $1310. The others ranged from $1550 (the so-so company) to $1900 to $2700. Steve provided the detailed estimate on the spot. Steve's team of four showed up on time, worked efficiently and carefully, and did a great job. Julio, Steve's foreman, carefully reviewed the job with me before beginning and consulted as necessary during the course of the work. Great experience. I'd hire Big Steve's again.

Steve was very responsive from the start. We got bids from several tree services and his price was in line with most. The one thing that stood out was he was the most geniune and honest. Even with the storm and how terribly busy they were, he was able to come to our house and give us a bid the very next day. On short notice, my insurance company needed the tree to be removed quickly and he was able to do it for us. His team was prompt and did great work.

the crew came to work on July 4th, even though it was a holiday, they spent most of the day working, in the 100 degree heat. It was obvious right away that they have worked together before, each of the crew members had a task and they were really good at it. The cleanup continued for 2 more days and they did an absolutely amazing job, clearing out a half an acre from trees and debris. They also had to cut several large trees that were severely damaged during the storm and they did very professionally, each branch tied up and slowly dropped to the ground. I rarely rave about contractors, but if I had any trees needing trimming or removal, Big Steve's Tree Care would be my first and only call.
Description of Work: I had approximately 20 mature trees down on my fence, yard and pool after the recent storm. Big Steve's was one of the companies that I managed to get ahold off in the aftermath of the storm. He came shortly thereafter to give me an estimate for the work. He gave me a written estimate right on the spot to remove all the trees, chip whatever was possible and haul away the rest and grind the stumps. His estimate was very reasonable, another top Tree removal contractor on this list wanted more than double that. Steve was also the only contractor who spent time walking the property, answering all of our questions and at the end, out of the goodness of his heart, helped us to haul a huge log out of the pool, which we have been struggling with for a while.

They were extremely professional, and Steve called to tell us that they were running a little late. I appreciated the courtesy, and when they arrived, it was beginning to rain and sleet. They unloaded and stacked the wood nicely, and were extremely courteous and professional. The quality of the wood was the best we have had, and we have used many other local companies. It burned very well, was very well seasoned, and the wood was truly oak, putting out a very good heat. They even threw in some kindling that they had. When we burned through it all and needed more in March, we did not hesitate to call Big Steve's back again, and they were able to deliver within a day. We bought only a half cord this time, but it was just as nice an experience as the first time. Although it was not the cheapest (like you can on Craig's List), it was not the most expensive (like Meadows and others). It was well priced for what we received. They are definitely our first choice for firewood from here on out!
Description of Work: We first bought a cord of seasoned oak in Sep of 2011, and had them deliver and stack the wood. We then ordered another half cord of wood in March of 2012, also with delivery and stacking.
