The crew was timely and very professional. They were great arborists and cleaned up after their work very thoroughly. Big Steve was a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: I needed four live hickorys and one dead pine taken down. All trees were about 60' tall. I needed the healthy hickorys taken down because each summer they would drop hickory nuts the size of golf balls, by the five-gallon bucketfull, down on my new sod. They would bury themselves to the bottom of the sod. Fine for the squirrels, bad for the sod. These trees overhang the sod and other plantings. They had to be topped first and gently lowered down.

The crew showed up on time and were very professional and pleasant to have work at our home. They worked very fast and hard while also maintaining safety protocols. Considering the amount of work, I had my doubts if they'd be able to finish in one day but in fact they finished early and did an outstanding job. Steve honored the Angie's List 10% off coupon even though I mentioned it after we contracted with him. I'd hire his company again with no reservations and highly recommend him to anyone looking for this kind of service.
Description of Work: We just moved into a house surrounded by tall mature trees in our yard. I had Steve come out to provide some guidance and an estimate for tree removal service as at least two trees were potentially unsafe and another was an eyesore. I also contacted another well known company on Angie's List who confirmed what Steve had told me and whose estimate was higher. We contracted with Steve to remove three trees, haul away the wood, grind the stumps, and trim two other trees whose branches were hitting a neighbors house.

Steve came out and surveyed the job and gave us an estimate on-site. His estimate was much more reasonable than others we received so we went with his company. The crew arrived promptly on the date scheduled, they were professional and efficient. The job took a bit longer than was anticipated and they needed to do some additional work to get the tree cleared from the lot - but there was never a suggestion of additional fees/charges. And they cleaned up everything before they left and checked with us to make sure the job was completed to our satisfaction. Great experience and we would use Big Steve's again.

Scheduled appointment for 9:00 AM on 11/06/2012, to remove a very dead 100 ft + oak tree, and to trim one side of maple leaning over the home. Biggest concern was the dead oak tree that was less than 40 ft from my home, and was leaning toward a neighbors home 60 ft away. The four man crew arrived within 15 min. of the appointed time and prompty set to work. One worker climbed the oak and systematically cut and dropped parts of the oak like a surgeon, missing all but a few limbs of adjacent trees and shrubs on both properties. All the cut pieces were taken to the shredder and all the debris was cleared up promptly. We were so glad to be rid of the oak that had haunted us for years. Steve's workers were friendly, prompt, extremely efficient, and took every precaution to ensure minimal impact to both our property, and to our neighbors property. Steve's price was the lowest by several hundred dollars. In fact, when I mention having obtained an estimate from Steve's to another bidder, his response was that his price was a good bit higher then Steve's because he thought customers wanted 'BMW' type of service rather than the 'used Ford' type of service provided by Steve's. At the end of the day, Steve's was the best choice for this job. Steve's will likely be our one-stop-shop for all our future tree work. r house
Description of Work: The removal of a very dead oak tree, over 100 ft tall, located in close proximity to our house and to a neighbor's house. Cutting back one side of a large, damaged maple tree to deter it from leaning further over our house. Clean up and removal of all debris. Attempt to avoid damaging other existing vegetation all around both trees.

A huge tree fell across the length of my house during the June 29 derecho, crashing through a bedroom and leaving lots of damage. The position was precarious with the main portion of the trunk bursting through trusses with limbs hanging off the opposite end of the house. The red oak tree was 82" in circumference, 80 feet long and weighed about 5 tons! A couple of neighbors recommended Big Steve's Tree Service. Steve gave me an estimate on July 2 and promptly scheduled the crew for the next day.. The removal was handled without a crane (no space with lots of trees). The crew worked through the day, cutting the tree into manageable links and removing it without additional damage to the house. They also arranged for the trunk to be removed for firewood. I wholeheartedly recommend Steve and his crew. They are seasoned professionals and did a great job. I would definitely hire them again.

We had a tree fall on our house during the last hurricane. The next day we called Big Steve (yes - he is a VERY big individual). He arrived on time, was well spoken and very professional. He provided me with a very reasonable quote for the removal of the tree. As I said, it was one day after the storm so I expected to pay a premium for the removal of the tree. I do not feel that he jacked the price up just because of the storm. His crew were very nice, on time and did a great job. They did not harm the surrounding plant life while removing the tree. I could not have asked for more. He also took a tree off of my neighbor's roof (same storm). It required a crane to accomplish this. My neighbor was very happy with the work. I would definitely use him again.

Another example of why it pays to get several estimates. I looked up various services on Angie's List - only looked at those rated A, that had done work in this area and had a fair number of reviews. I picked out 4 and sent e-mails to all requesting a free estimate on the work. There were 10% off coupons on Angies List for all four providers. I heard back from 3 providers the day after I e-mailed them and the 4th one the following day, so all were very responsive. All came out within a few days to look at the job. The lowest estimate was for $800, two were for $1500 and one for $2895. I went with Big Steve's Tree care, which was the cheapest, and set up a date for the work. He did not need us to be present for the work which was nice. We even had a birdfeeder in one tree and asked that they make sure to leave the branch with the feeder - which they did. We asked a few questions about what they were going to do, the workers they used, insurance/workers comp coverage they had and they answered all those questions promptly and offered to provide paperwork on the insurance. Since we weren't home I don't know how long the job took but, other then seeing a major difference in the trees after the trimming, we wouldn't have even known they had been in the back yard. They were very accomodating in setting up a date and didn't even require payment before doing the work - which amazed me. They simply sent us an e-mail of the invoice the evening after performing the work and said paying by check was fine. I would highly recommend Steve's to anyone.

Overall, professional estimate. The work actually was performed before scheduled late in the day. That was good and bad because I would have liked to have been there to inspect all the work while it was being performed but they were there at least by the start time and knocked it out quickly. I feel that perhaps more trimming could have been done but since they do not use harmful tree spike climbing methods, they are limited to what they're actually able to reach and trim. Overall, they did a professional job.

I live in a townhome in Fairfax that had a huge pine tree hovering over the roof. We had pine cones clogging the gutters and sap soaking any outdoor furniture. This was a tree that was probably a huge nuisance the past twenty years. It had to go. I put in a request for an estimate and I received a call the same day. We scheduled an estimate that week. He arrived on time and took a look at the tree and the surrounding brick fence and concluded it was a seven to eight hour job. Steve was excellent. He correctly predicted the amount of time it would take to complete and his crew could not have been more careful and professional. He even gave great advice on what type of tree to plant next to try and get the shade cover we'll miss during the humid summers. On the day his crew removed the pine, each limb had to be knotted with the rope and carefully let down so as not to damage the brick fence or patio. Each team member had a role and did it the entire day. One guy was up in the tree, another guy held his line, and two other guys carried the limbs from my yard to the chipper and truck at the top of the hill. It was like clockwork. The crew works well together and are always in motion. There was no issue of slacking off or having crew members being too green to do the job efficiently. For grinding up the stump, the machine was just a couple of inches to wide to get through the gate. It was getting dark and I'm sure the crew was tired, but they decided to remove the front tire and squeeze the machine through and put the machine's tire back on the other side. Another company would have rammed it through and scraped the bricks badly or just say too bad and leave me with hiring someone else or doing the stump grinding myself. Glad to see Steve's company does what it takes to make sure they meet the terms of the contract. Out of all the projects I've used contractors for in renovating my home, this one was the best. Steve's tree service is on time, friendly, and professional. After completing the project several neighbors asked for their contact information. They were impressed with how well they handled what was the biggest tree in the neighborhood and left no debris anywhere. Great work guys!!!

The first crew arrived as indicated, set up their equipment and proceeded to take down the large twin Chestnut Oak. My son and I watched the young man climb up and section off the tree. THe sectioned pieces were lowered to the ground by the remaining crew. All debris was removed to chipper and blown into waiting truck for disposal. The good wood was cut as promised into 18" lengths for us to split. The grinding crew returned on Saturday and completed the grinding of stumps below grade. Both crews were highly professional and courteous and responsive to questions from my son and I. The work was done in a very safe manner. I would highly recommend Big Steve's Tree Care to anyone with the need for tree services.
Description of Work: We had four dead trees to be removed. One was an old oak that had been dead for a while, one was a small mimosa which had started growing thru our fence, and the last was an old twin Chestnut Oak that was approximately 90 feet tall. Steven Kurtzhals provided us with a written estimate to take down the trees; cut the good wood into 18" chunks for us to split; remove all debris including several old piles of limbs we had stacked up; and grind the stumps below grade.

Steven is very professional and reliable and his prices are very competitive. All I have to do is ask him to take care of a job, he e-mails an estimate and after approval it is done in a few days. During storms he can get pretty busy and it will take him a little longer to respond but it is understandable since everyone needs the same work. We highly recommend the services Big Steve's Tree Care.

As a result of the derecho storm in June 2012, five trees came down on and around our house. We first tried another Angie's List company, which was also highly rated, but I could never get them to come out to the house for an estimate even after several calls and appointment times. Meanwhile, over 12 other companies drove by the house and gave us estimates. Most were around $6k, but one company, Country Boys, quoted us over $12k, and that was only if they could mulch all the trees and leave the mulch in our driveway! I went back to Angie's List and called Big Steve's and I could not be happier. They provided an estimate within 24 hours of my first email requesting a quote. The work was doen promtly the following week. Five trees ranging from 50 feet t 150 feet had to be chopped down in pieces and hauled away. Big Steve's patiently and clearly explained what work was necessary vs what was not, i.e. a 6th tree was saved by a big trim and didn't need to be cut down. On top of their professionalism and excellent work, Big Steve's quote was $2k less than anyone else. This made me realize that all the other companies were marking things up to take advantage of the storm damage. Big Steve's was clearly honest and trustworty no matter what the situation. I highly recommend their services.
Description of Work: 5 trees ranging from 50 feet to 150 feet were limb-less after the derecho storm. They had to be cut down and hauledaway. And, a 6th tree needed a lot of trimming to keep it alive. Big Steve's did an excellent job from the first phone call though to the completion of the job. Communication and service were excellent. After the work was done, you could barely tell anyone had been in our yard.

I initially contacted Steve to give us an estimate for removing some branches that had been damaged in the crown. I asked for an assessment of the overall health of the tree, because it had some indications that there might be rot. Steve examined the tree very thoroughly and recommended that we have the whole thing cut down. He offered us a better price than the other companies that came out (all of them recommended removal). When the crew arrived they were knowledgeable about the details of our job (we wanted to leave about 7 feet of the trunk, because it formed the post of our fence). They were also conscientious of the wood that would be used to make the mulch, leaving out the locust wood, which had thorns. The crew was punctual and efficient (arrived at 9, all done by 2) and the crew chief was friendly. I was very happy with the job (seeing the rotten wood on the inside of the upper trunk convinced me that Steve made the correct recommendation to take the whole thing out) and would hire them again.

After the "duratio" storm June 29, 2012, we had a 3 trees down on our property. The tops of two large trees from the adjacent park land fell across different sections of our 5' high fence. Additionally, the top half of a large silver maple fell. I called about 5 companies. Big Steve's responded promptly, but due to the extensive damage across the area, he was unable to get to us for about two weeks. (However this was less time than other companies.) He provided a detailed written estimate quickly, and the costs were less than at least 2 other companies. He was the same price as one other company, but that company did not give us a detailed estimate. After hiring Big Steve's, they came quicker than I expected, and did a fabulous job. They removed the trees across the fence without any further damage to the fence. It did take them a few days to complete all the work, and when I returned home to find large chunks of the trunk still not removed I called. Steve responded promptly and told me that the crew had been unable to finish that day but would be returning. Steve was always very responsive, professional and pleasant to speak with. But that's not the end of the story. Some time later, we discovered that not all of the surface roots of the silver maple had been ground. But due to other priorities, I never called Steve back. Finally, more than two months later, I called and left a message. Steve returned my call that evening, and told me a crew would return to take care of the roots, at no additional charge. He said I'd paid for that work, and if they had missed something, they'd set it right. A crew foreman called and left a message that he would be by; they came and did the work without me being home; and it was done well and completely. I was surprised, and my husband was too, that we wouldn't have to pay an additional charge. I felt it was my fault for taking so long to lodge a complaint; I felt I should have reviewed the job right away. I will definitely hire Big Steve's again if we need any work done in the future. Thank you, Steve!
Description of Work: Two large trees that had fallen across our 5' high fence were removed and hauled away. One large silver maple that had cracked off half way up was totally removed (trunk was probably 3' or more in diameter; tree was probably 30 years old and towered above our roof line), all limbs, trunk, debris totally removed, stump and surface roots ground.
