Big Steve's Tree Care

Very easy and hassle free. I didn't have to be home for the estimate or work.

They did great work in less time than they expected. One tree was right next to our house and another along our fence line and they were very careful not to damage any surrounding trees, bushes, fence, etc. We were very happy with the work and price.

The workers showed up as scheduled. They were very professional. They followed safety precautions carefully when taking down a large tree. They were organized, hard workers, and all seemed to care about doing a good job. The trees were removed, every bit of debris was removed from the property. They had to return with a stump grinder a few days later. Again no problem and no mess. They even recycled all of their water bottles.

They saved the day. I got a call that a tree had fallen across the entrance of the community (we only have 1). It landed on top of someones car and blocked the road so that nobody could get in or out. I got the call around 3:30pm so had very little time to address it before people started coming home from work. I called a few places and got a hold of Steve right away. He was in the area so was able to drive by and take a look. He quoted me for the removal and the price was fair, especially since this was a last minute emergency. Just over an hour from the time I initally heard about the tree, it was removed and everything was cleaned up. I was amazed how quickly everything was done and the majority of residents had no idea this had even occurred.

We called Big Steve's Tree Care to schedule an appointment for an estimate. We talked directly with Steve himself, who was very pleasant and professional, and we scheduled an appointment for a week afterwards -- an issue with our schedule and not his. The following week, we were standing outside in the pouring rain with Steve, looking over all of the trees on our property. One, a smaller black cherry tree, was infested with poison ivy and not worth saving. The second, a much larger tree that was probably 60 years old, was healthy but growing at an angle towards the sun. The angle had become significant enough that, even though it had survived the larger hurricanes in the last ten years plus a straight-line windstorm and the `12 derecho, we were concerned the next major storm would knock it over into our house (and our son's bedroom) or our neighbor's house. An estimate was given on the spot, and we approved it the following day. The estimate was for tree removal, not stump removal; the stumps are on the sides of our yard and not a real concern. A week later, a crew showed up and spent the whole day (approximately 9am to 5:30pm) removing both trees. They removed all debris from the yard -- carrying out all pieces of wood plus blowing as much of the remaining particulate matter out of the yard. They also re-attached the section of fence that they had to remove in order to cart tree parts to their truck. Except for the missing trees, you couldn't tell that anyone had been there when all was said and done. The crew was very friendly and professional -- and surprisingly helpful. This has nothing to do with their work but is more a testament to their character and the quality of people that Big Steve hires. My wife had had to take our dog, an elderly, 100-plus-pound St. Bernard to the vet for an emergency appointment. When she returned, Big Steve's crew was already working, but when they saw that she was having trouble getting our dog from the truck and into the house, they dropped everything and came over to help without being asked. They were all very friendly and cheerful towards the pup -- one who normally is wary of strangers but made no effort to make them her mid-morning snack. She actually seemed to love the guys and all of their attention.

Big Steve's Tree Service was punctual, quick, efficient, and reasonable priced. I received 4 quotes and his and another tree service were the same. I went with Steve's because I was actually home when he came by and he answered all my questions.

I first got a quote from Big Steve's in November of 2012 regarding the removal of an oak tree from the backyard. A shed was going to be built in the area of the tree, and I didn't want the tree's root system to destroy the concrete pad on which the shed would be built. After a couple of quotes from other companies, I decided to go with Big Steve's, and scheduled the appointment. They recalled the quote, even though several months had passed. The guys arrived on time, and in short order cut down the tree and ground down the stump. I had arranged for them to leave the larger bits of wood, and they cut those into suitable lengths. All in all, Big Steve's was excellent to deal with.

There was some miscommunication with Big Steve's Tree Care about stump removal so they did come back and take the stump out but they didn't do a real great job on that. Actually my mom is contemplating whether to call them back to ask him to come back and look at it. I would use them again but I would just make sure everything is clear. Part of the problem is they came over a several day period and I wasn't there the entire time and my mom is elderly. I think there was a miscommunication about how nobody went out and checked the work before they left. They had some machinery break down and they had to come back. I think overall they did a good job but the issue with the stump was the only problem.

The professionalism, punctuality and performance of this business are exceptional. Big Steve himself showed up to perform the estimate at the exact time scheduled, and his crew showed up exactly on time to perform the work. During the project, the crew supervisor checked with me frequently to insure that they were performing the work as desired. I highly recommend this tree service and will definitely use them again. You may find cheaper, but you won't find better.

Steve was quick and efficient, giving me his assessment of the work to be done and the price it'd take. Ultimately, I didn't use his service, but his price was very competitive, and I would certainly consider him for the next job I need done.

Big Steve's tree service did an excellent job. The greatest challenges for us was related to obtaining all of the appropriate permits from the City of Alexandria and dealing with harrassing neighbors. They were very professional, took down each limb, one at a time, grinded everything up and then took down the main trunk in two large pieces that were hauled away. They cleaned up all of the debris and flattened the space where the tree once stood. Very pleased and would definitely use them again.

After we relocated the racoons living in the tree, Steve's folks came and spent the day carefully bringing down the tree one part at a time. The tree was found to be hollow in the center, and was probably one major storm away from destroying our house. The tree was brought down without the slightest damage to any other trees or property even though it was in a super tight situation. Everything was cleaned up to perfection. The stump was too soft to get rid of, so we agreed in writing that they'd come back after the summer has a chance to dry the stump out and they'll take it flush to the ground.

I was very impressed overall with the responsiveness and quality of the company. Prompt for estimate and very knowledgeable. Arrived when they said they were going to and did a good job. Had a minor snafu with a couple of shingles which were immediately and satisfactorily repaired/replaced. Most of all, I feel that this company is honest and operates with integrity and high standards.

The price was cheaper that anyone else considering the size of the tree. He did a great job. I was used other services and they are by far the most reliable. They had the best clean up job.

I called Big Steve to come out for an estimate on removing three hickories and one dead pine. All the trees were large. The hickories were healthy trees, but dropped their hickory nuts every summer on our lawn which would kill the grass. They also attracted squirrels. Steve's crew of five or six guys came out within a few days and made short order of the trees. I had them leave the stumps, which I now rather regret, but I know from experience that these companies only grind them up rather than remove them. The crew had to expertly drop the trees in order to avoid some landscaping, not to mention the house. They were great. They cleaned up after the job very well.

Good services, I would recogmend them for what I had done. Prompt and did what he said he would do.

This company removed a huge tree from my house after the derecho on June 29, 2012. After the renovations were completed, I called Big Steve's Tree Care to get an estimate on removing a couple of damaged trees and cleaning up some other trees. Steve Kurtzhal scheduled a time to meet me, gave me a prompt estimate and we scheduled the work about a week later. His crew arrived in a timely manner, completed the work and removed debris. They sent a crew later to grind the stumps. All work was completed very satisfactorily.

Excellent. He left the place clean and made no damage to any property. His pricing was more than reasonable.

Very good -easy to contact, negotiate & schedule with. Contract was easy to understand and Steve was easy to work with. There was 1 more limb that I would have cut, but the tree looks better and I trust their judgement
