Furniture Refinishing and Repair, Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing, Antiques

About us

Furniture Medic by Karen is an independent family owned and operated Servicemaster Franchise that has been serving the Northern Virginia Metro Area since 1998. The company was started in 1998 by Karen and Brad Osman and is now owned and operated by their sons Erick and Mitchell who have been involved in the business since its beginning. Furniture Medic by Karen is different than most other furniture repair and restoration companies. Through Erick and Mitchell’s 14 years of furniture repair and restoration experience the Osman brothers have developed special techniques and use products that allow almost all of their services to be performed onsite at the customers home or business. This allows for the work to be done quickly and efficiently and the customer doesn’t have to wait weeks for their furniture to be delivered back to them. The onsite process saves everyone time and money. Furniture Medic by Karen will be happy to provide a free estimate to customers who send pictures of their damaged furniture. For an estimate, please send a picture of the entire piece of furniture with detailed pictures of the damaged areas. Including a common object in the photo next to the damage helps to determine scale so we can provide a more accurate estimate. A tape measure or a coin are are typical examples. Also Include a brief description of the damage, the overall dimensions of the piece, your name and contact information, and where the furniture is located. We take pride in in our work and in the relationships we develop with our clients. Contact us directly to inquire about our services, receive an estimate, or schedule an appointment.

Erick came to the house to fix a Japanese "tansu" which is like a chest of drawers made out of wood....it had sentimental value for us. A dog had chewed the corner and there were other gouges and nicks all. He fixed everything and it looks great. You can't tell at all. Also, he repaired some worn spots on our kitchen cabinets and also filled a dent in our coffee table. All this for just over $300 - I thought it was a good deal. I highly recommend Erick and Furniture Medic for wood furniture repairs.

Mitchell repaired a drawer that was broken to my bedroom armoire. He did a great job. He also repaired the nicks and scratches on my bed, night stands, dresser and a Grandfather clock. I will definitely use this company in the future.

We could not be happier with Furniture Medic. They gave us the best price for the service that they provided and then gave excellent service. Our cabinets look fantastic and Mitch and Erick were wonderful to work with. They were pleasant, communicative and effective. We found some touch up work that we wanted done after they had finished and they quickly responded to our needs. I would use them again in a second and recommend them to anyone.

The cabinets turned out beautifully! Furniture Medic picked a paint color that went perfectly with the granite, appliance and wall color. They were professional, punctual, responded quickly to all my phone calls and emails, were thorough and their prices were reasonable. They also made additional home improvement recommendations that made the overall renovation look even better than originally planned.

After reading such great reviews on Angies List about Furniture Medic by Karen AND a great review from a friend of mine, I contacted the company via e-mail. Along with a description of the piece and the repair that needed done, I sent photos and dimensions of the piece. Within less than 24 hours, I received a reply from Erick (one of the owners) with a quote for the repair of the Queen Ann leg which had broken off from the base of a custom-built lighted dressing table. He scheduled an appointment for two weeks later. When his prior appointment to mine was complete, he called me to tell me he had finished that job early and would it be possible to come about an hour early --- which was just perfect! He is what I call a "miracle worker" and definitely a master of his trade! In order to turn the dressing table upside down, he had to disassemble the lighted mirror box and all the electrical wiring. Once he took the leg off (which was hanging by a thread), we then began to discuss "refurbishing" the color since the piece is about 30 years old and the color has faded in many areas. He was able to repair and refurbish the piece onsite at a very reasonable price. It looks like a brand new piece of furniture and I couldn't be more pleased. Erick is a delightful person as well as a perfectionist in his work. I recommend him highly!

I need to repair a brocken sofa leg that was very easy to repair and a Wood screen that was very damage. I send pictures and insist that the wood screen should be taken to repair. At the end, they could not repair the wood screen. The cost to send somebody for any repair is $190, but they charge me $125 because the work in the sofa was minimum. (Anyway I think is expensive for a brocken leg). The discount was ok, but I was very dissappointed because they could't fix the screen. Nevertheless, they give me a referral to a company who can do it.

They are terrific. I had an emergency and they came the same day I called and fixed the problem. They also did a lot of work for me refinishing tables in the past. It is a family-run business. When they fixed my bed it was great and pleasant to have them in my house. They explained what happened and what they did. We were very happy with the service.

When we called to make an appointment, and I explained the problem, Erick explained that the minimum appointment time is an hour and a half for $160. He recommended that my wife and I come up with some other questions or ideas that the repairman could work on while he was out. Mitchell was prompt (arrived maybe 5 minutes before the appointment time) and quickly explained he might have to leave a little early since he had some family things to take care of, and that he would pro-rate the cost accordingly. He then quickly looked at the cabinet door, explained that he would two different types of glue for the areas of the cracks, and that he wouldn't clue the panel within the frame, since it is designed to float free and may crack over time if it were glued to the frame. Over about 20 - 30 minutes he worked away on the cabinet, using different clamps to help it set well, then touched up any extra glue. Mitchell explained what their goal was to have the fixed cabinet door look like it had never broken. I have to say he met that expectation. After looking at the cracked door now I can't even see where it had been cracked. I also explained a few other things which came to mind after our initial phone call. I also asked for some ideas on how to fix discoloration of the wood due to sun, how to touch up some scratches on a cabinet door, and the best way to change our swing door to a pull-out door for the trash. Mitchell put explained a thorough solution for fixing the discoloration and put together an estimate for me. He also provided a Web address for touch-up paint, since he didn't have any in the truck he could provide. He also gave me some advice on putting in a pull-out trash drawer, and offered to come out and attach it if necessary, as that would cost less than him ordering the parts, as he doesn't often do that sort of work.

Furniture Medic was very professional and responsive. I contacted them to repair a spring in a leather sofa and refinishing the top of a coffee table that had been ruined. I provided them photo's and they provided an immediate estimate for both items, cautioning that the sofa repair may not be doable. I set up an appointment for just the sofa, as I didn't want to spend the money now on the coffee table repair. When Erick came out, the determined the sofa repair was not doable by him and recommended another company that specialized in leather furniture or a quick fix that we could do ourselves. He checked out the coffee table top and was to do a repair on the spot versus a total refinish at a much lower cost. I was very pleased with the final result.-

Overall, it was a good experience, although it took longer than I would have liked. At the outset, I realized that there aren't many companies that reface kitchen cabinets and my options were limited. That said, I was very pleased with the finishes and door styles available through Furniture Medic, as well as the price. Once an order is placed, one has to wait about a month for new cabinet doors and drawer fronts to be made. In my case, when a key person suddenly left the company, my order was delayed even further. Then, during installation, it was discovered that a drawer front was missing, and we had to wait several more weeks for that to be made. Still, the quality of the work was outstanding. Despite the delays, we thought everyone at Furniture Medic was very professional. I do recommend the company and would use them again.

Furniture Medic by Karen exceeded my expectations. We needed their services to fix a jammed gear in a sliding dining table. Mitchell arrived on time, fixed the problem, identified other pieces that needed work (loose table legs on two different pieces of furniture) and was willing to make repairs for the same price quoted for that one initial problem. We had 3 pieces repaired all for the price quoted for the one visit. I would recommend them highly and wouldn't hesitate to call them again in the future.

The personnel were knowledgeable and seemed honest on the phone. They arrived on time and more than filled my expectations; they really understood their craft. They suggested an appropriate sequence of the work, and finished each task early and again surpassed high expectations.
Description of Work: The top of our antique dining room table was refinished and its base reset to improve its stability. Our 60 year old kitchen table was totally refinished. Three broken chairs, two antique, were repaired and refinished. They recommended a caning expert to install new cane seats on two.

The estimate was somewhat higher than others but, from the manner that Mitch used in examining the table and communicating with us about the problems, we believed he understood what the project---and the table---were worth, and we accepted the estimate. The company picked up the table top in accord with the schedule and returned with it about three weeks later. When we inspected the work, we noted that the scratch had been sanded out and the veneer appeared to have been fully flattened. But we were not satisfied because the new finish had not been "rubbed out" sufficiently. The surface had no sheen and showed the "orange peel" effect. Mitch saw that we were correct (the light in his shop isn't good and he had not noticed before that more rubbing was necessary). He readily took the top back to his shop. After several weeks during which we heard nothing, we visited the shop and saw that much additional rubbing and buffing had been done but that the top was still not ready. We conferred with Mitch's staff during the visit, and the work continued. After three more weeks, during which we heard nothing again, we visited the shop again and saw that more progress had been made. Mitch apologized for not staying in touch, explaining that he did not believe the table top was ready as yet. We agreed. Before we left his shop that second time, and apparently wanting to put pressure on himself, Mitch set a time the following week to deliver the table top. When he delivered in accord with the arrangements we had made, the top was finished and very well rubbed out. The scratch had disappeared and the finish, a hand-applied polyurethane, appeared impervious enough that the veneer probably will not begin curling again. He gave us a lifetime warranty on the finish. Although the administrative aspects of the job weren't perfect, the work was very good and Mitch showed a commitment to fully completing the work and demonstrated high standards for the quality of the work itself. He was very professional in responding when we saw, at the time of the initial delivery, that more work was necessary. I believe that the reason for his not reporting progress to us was that he was more focused on doing quality work than on expending effort in keeping us informed. Since we didn't need the table for any particular occasion during the two months that Mitch had its top, his commitment to quality did not inconvenience us. We recommend him for the quality of his work and his thoroughness in ensuring we were satisfied with it.
Description of Work: Furniture Medic (a franchise; we used the one in Oak Hill VA) repaired the veneer surface of our dining table. The surface had been scratched and the veneer had begun to curl, coming off the surface of the table. The company fixed both problems fully.
