Every construction project has its issues and mine had a few. Atlantic Deck and Home Renovation not only addressed these issues but went above and beyond to make certain that I was happy. This is a great small business and I recommend them enthusiastically. They take pride in their work and work hard to make sure that their customers are fully satisfied.

For a company that states on their website "We take great pride in being able to offer you unbeatable service at competitive prices" I guess that only means if you plan on spending over 10k. I requested a quote from Atlantic Deck through AngiesList on getting a Deck built on my Townhouse. I received an email on the 31st stating they have a minimum charge of $10,000 and they wanted to make sure they were a "good fit for providing an estimate." I replied back that I didn't know how much decks would cost but I didn't want to spend more then 15k. Welp, that is pretty much where it ended. Didn't get a reply back, sent a follow up a couple days later and didn't get a reply to that email either. So be warned if you don't plan on spending a lot of money it seems Atlantic Decks has no time to bother with you.

I submitted an estimate request through their website. Received a reply from Robert that they are "scheduling new construction into July", which was fine. Then he asked for "dimensions or approximate square footage" of the patio, which I provided, along with the pictures of the area. I also specifically mentioned the material (concrete): "I'd probably want a concrete leveled with the concrete slab that is already there". Robert replied: "Thank you for the clarification – that is very helpful" and states that they schedule estimates for 3 weeks away - no problem, I made an appointment between 10-11 AM. On the date of appointment Robert emails at 9:50 AM to tell me that appointment needs to be rescheduled due “Due to the expected weather today”. It was raining in the early morning, but stopped at the time of our appointment (mind you, I had other contractors keeping appointments in the rain). He offers to provide “ballpark costs for the patio you want and compare the paver vs. Flagstone cost”. Why would I want “ballpark” estimate after waiting for him to come for 3 weeks and also after I had made it clear that I wanted all concrete patio? I replied that I wanted to have the real estimate for all-concrete patio, which would require his visit. And then Robert drops the final bomb on me: “We unfortunately do not install concrete patios – only paver or Flagstone”. I understand they have more business than they can handle now and can be picky with the jobs they take on. My project, obviously, was not big enough for them, but they knew the scope of my project and still refused to even show up for an estimate. Everyone of their competitors that I contacted at least kept their appointments and had been professional.

Response from Atlantic Deck & Home Renovation Inc
Dear Angieslist Member, We are sorry you are so upset that your request for a fee estimate went unfulfilled and for any resulting inconveniences. There was clearly an unintentional communication issue regarding requested service and when realized, we clarified the services we could offer you, which you declined. As for the appointment itself, you called our office the morning of the estimate to initiate the request to postpone to later in the day due to a conflict with your schedule. Due to the incoming rain forecast we suggested rescheduling another day because we can't effectively take measurements and drawings in the rain. We are very flexible in finding the very next available time/day without delay. It was at this time that the services misunderstanding was discovered, resulting in you canceling the estimate request.

The owner, Chris Mallonee, was dedicated to make things right with our project. The project did not go entirely smoothly, but no construction project does. Chris stuck to the budget and made sure that the project was completed as spec'd. We had some follow-up calls after project completion, and Chris promptly responded to calls to fix things. I highly recommend Atlantic Deck as a very reputable company to work with.

Atlantic Deck did an excellent job and were very professional. They built a beautiful Trex deck with aluminum balusters and privacy lattice under the deck. I also had a storage shed where they replaced the roof. The quote and design was professionally done, and the project management was excellent with an online portal for design documents, pictures, invoices, etc. The carpentry was very well done, and overall we are pleased with the final result.

This is an excellent company. I was extremely impressed with the professional attention to detail. I was especially pleased with the precise delivery of building materials and removal of old deck material as the job progressed. The workmanship is first class. They are extremely easy to work with, and they went the extra mile to make sure I received the deck I wanted. I confidently give this company my highest recommendation.

ADHR added a beautiful new front porch to my Cape Cod style home, replaced a stoop and access stairs at the side and back doors and replaced all the exterior doors in my home. I am overwhelmed with how wonderful this all turned out as other contractors I spoke with were concerned that moving the center door would result in a unbalanced look. The people at ADHR totally understood the more traditional look I was looking for and the results are exactly what I was looking for. We had several missteps along the way with an inaccurate survey which required a new permit and lousy weather delays which extended the job by weeks at a time. They did bring the mason in on the weekends when the weather permitted just to keep us on track. Working with Taylor, the project manager was great....got regular updates from him about what was going on and he made regular site visits and coordinated with another contractor for the roof installation. Luis, the crew foreman, was a pleasure to work with, very professional and I have to say that all the crew did beautiful work. When working inside the house, they took great care to protect and clean up the surrounding area. The only caveat I feel I should mention is to make sure you have ALL requirements spelled out in the contract as they WILL charge the $250 fee for any change orders (which is clearly stated in the contract) even for a minor addition.

Atlantic Deck just recently completed the construction of our deck and screened in porch. We were extremely satisfied with the entire interaction from this very professional company. We had bids from 3 different companies and choose Atlantic because of their responsiveness, professionalism and competitive pricing. They were not the cheapest, but I am very happy we choose Atlantic. The communication was proactive, the contract was simple and followed. The crews were always on time and very nice to work with. The company uses the highest quality lumber and supplies and the craftsmanship of the work can not be beat. Our project manager visited the job almost every day and was always concerned about my observations and took every question I asked seriously. They were able to finish the project ahead of schedule due to good weather. The entire process was outstanding. I went into their Leesburg office to make the last payment because I wanted to personally thank them for the excellent experience. I will use this company again and recommend to family and friends.

The construction of the deck and porch went very well. However we decided to use pressure treated lumber for the deck in stead of composite floor boards. Chris had us sign a waiver that using pressure treated lumber was not the preferred product. That it would requiring sealing and staining regularly. They included in the contract that pressure treated wood would eventually crack. They did not put a time limit on any warranty of the pressure treated wood. My experience with a deck built for us at another home with quality pressure treated lumber did not split, warp or require replacing in the 12 years I lived there. I felt that Atlantic Deck would use the most preferred treated decking and build the deck with quality wood floor boards that would not need to be replaced in four years. However Atlantic Deck used inexpensive pressure treated lumber for the deck floor boards. Within 4 years the floor boards and railings have split and are warped. The boards will need to be replaced by this Fall. They did not use quality #2 prime or ground contact pressure treated boards with a thickness that would not warp or crack readily.I doubt the boards would have met the new ICC standards. Cedar boards would have been more appropriate for a quality deck builder. The price of composite decking was $7,500 higher and not affordable. . I have tried to contact Atlantic Deck. I have sent emails and text messages with pictures of the deck boards and railings. THEY HAVE TO NOT RESPONDED AT ALL. They should at least come and see the deck. They should address that the deck has cracked and warped in a very short period of time. . Chris and Zack have been very unprofessional when it comes to addressing any problems or warranties on the decks they have built

My new deck and porch are beautiful! Tom and Ben (the crew) did a great job. The tear down of the old deck was done quickly, cleaned up, and hauled away. They were meticulous in building the new deck and porch, and the end result is fabulous. Arran, the project manager, was very responsive to my questions, and progress was posted each day on their website. I could not be happier with the results and would not hesitate to contact Atlantic Deck for any future renovations.

We had a new full-deck installed in July 2016 and were very pleased with the high quality of work and professional service. I called several contractors for price quotes and was impressed by the quick response of Atlantic Deck for an initial visit and assessment, providing a written quote at the end of the first visit, and the email communication with our project manager, Arran Collins. After receiving the platt for our townhouse property boundary, which was needed to verify the distance needed for the outward extension of our back fence, Arran took care of application paperwork for permits from Fairfax County, and emailed me to communicate when the electrician was available to install a new outside outlet and the demolition of the old half-deck would begin. The supervisor of the day laborers worked tirelessly in the heat and humidity of mid-July, and did an outstanding job of removing the old half-deck quickly, setting up the concrete pillars, and constructing the new deck. Overall, it was worth the $8,000 I paid for the entire project because of the clear email communication and professionalism of this organization. Based on the quality of work, I would strongly recommend Atlantic Deck to others. Although you might save up to 25% of the total cost if you negotiate directly with a supervisor of day laborers, you really need to know what you are doing, or trust the person (unless you are willing to take the risk of poor quality work). We liked them so much that I paid $650 to have a “deck-staining” contract with a sub-contractor recommended by Arran in September 2016. He did a great job as well.

They were very responsive and direct with the pricing. We had a couple other estimates from larger companies which were grossly overpriced. Atlantic Deck gave us a rough estimate over the phone based on square footage and showed up the same week to see the project up close. They took less than a half hour and the official estimate matched the quote given over the phone. After patiently assisting us working with the county to get a survey and permit they showed up and promptly finished the project in less than a week. They use Buildertrend which allows you to follow along with the project online and view pictures as well as store related plans, contracts and permits. We would highly recommend working with Atlantic Deck and Home Renovation. They were top notch.

From start to finish everything was great. There is no question that they are a well managed company, they have some very nice people and take care of their customers. We plan to use them for additional work and will recommend them to family and friends. Specifics concerning our job - Sales and Design - handled by Kris - Atlantic was one of four companies we talked to. His solution and related proposal made the most sense. In addition the price was reasonable and the overall "value" (in our mind) was the best. AT the start of the project Kris told me that we would most probably have to wait a while .... perhaps as long as two or three months and that they may not be able to start until perhaps as late as August (they were extremely busy - high demand). We were ok with that as long as the job got done right. The fact is that they were able to get our job started before that, so that was great. The job took a little over two weeks to do (estimate was about three weeks - given the HOT weather I don't know how they made the schedule). Kris visited the site at least four times and did a final walk through with me. Project Management - Atlantic assigns a project manager to their jobs and we got Aron. From day one through completion of the job, Aron came by each day to monitor progress. He always gave me a clear picture of what was about to be done and asked if I had any questions. He kept me informed via daily visits, emails and even pictures. Bottom line - He was very active and made sure the with site project leader Luis was on target. Luis and his crew - all of the above is nice but if you don't have a good building crew it doesn't matter. We'll Luis and his crew did a fantastic job - I should mention that we had a number of days that it was about 100 degrees and they kept working - unreal - Very nice people and they know what they are doing.

I could not have asked for a better experience from estimate to final completion. Estimator was fair (I compared with 3 other top rated contractors from Angie's) and patient with me as I had him run a multitude of iterations and alterations as we zeroed in on what we wanted and what we were willing to pay for. We started the process in November of plan generation, HOA approval and building permits. Construction started in mid-January. Only delays from then on were weather related. Arran was our project manager, and he and his team are consummate professionals. Just a pleasure to work with, particularly his lead carpenter Luis. It was clear from start to finish that they take pride in their work and ensuring the customer is satisfied. Any issues I had were always addressed promptly. Communication with the PM is efficient through their project management app Builder Trend. The project is documented daily on there including project pictures. Project payments and balance due are tracked as well as change orders. Change orders are approved by the customer on the app. Solid tool. i highly recommend Atlantic for a new deck and/or porch. They know what they are doing.
Description of Work: Demolished and disposed of existing 300 sq ft deck. Replaced with 16'x17.5' screened covered porch with 6'x14' open deck. All decking is capped composite by Timbertech. All exposed pressure treated wood is capped with white pvc boards. Railing is black Fortress Iron with no drink ledge. Porch ceiling is stained tongue and groove pine. Deck and porch is about 4ft off ground, so underside is covered with pressure treated privacy lattice stained white. All of it is gorgeous! I talked to Chris, the owner, and set up an appointment for the following week to get an estimate. He showed up right on time. We talked through what I wanted (I provided a sample drawing), looked at/measured the back of my house, and visited a neighbor's deck that had features I liked. The following week, Chris provided a complete estimate. Of the four estimates I received, his was the lowest. I also visited a project his company recently completed that was similar to what I was looking for. Those customers were very complimentary and had only positive things to say about the crew that did the work. It was a close call, but in the end I went with another company that cost a little more, but offered some additional services that I needed. Based on our interactions and my visit to the recent job site, I would recommend Atlantic to others, and have in fact given their number to a couple of friends who are interested in having some deck work done.

At the time the service was performed, I thought they did a decent job. Months later, the first time there was a hard, sustained rain, my basement flooded. In the 10 years I'd owned the home, even including a hurricane, I'd never had a drop of water in there. Every time there's a hard rain for at least 30 minutes since they did their work, it floods across the entire length of the basement. I had just had new carpet and linoleum put in as I was getting ready to rent out the basement to a future roommate. Instead, I got a nightmare of damage. Carpet ruined. Dirt across the entire basement. Standing water. Etc. I was SHOCKED, because again, I'd never had a drop of water before. I only routinely go into my basement to do laundry, so it was several days before I discovered the flooding the first time it happened, and the water had been sitting there the whole time. I called and emailed Atlantic immediately, to both my main contact and the president. It was on a weekend. I made it clear there was an emergency in the emails but I did not get a timely response. Eventually they responded, and inspected it, and said they would send a couple guys to rip out and dispose of my now-ruined brand new wall-to-wall carpet. They left one or two of those industrial hot air blowers for drying floors/rooms, for maybe a week. I had multiple conversations with the president of the company, who finally came out and inspected the house, and tried to get them to take ownership and responsibility for their work and fix the problem and pay for the damage. Ultimately, the president, Christopher Mallonee, gave me his formal response that it wasn't their fault and they wouldn't do anything for me or give me any form of compensation. To be clear, here are some of the things they did wrong because they had no understanding of drainage, landscaping, and water management. I learned all these things after the nightmare began. - They did not seal the drain holes in the side walls of the new window well structure they installed. - They did not seal the seams/edges where the window well structure meets the house. - They used an improper size of rock to fill the bottom of the window well. The rocks get covered with silt that pours in from the side wall drain holes and get completely clocked, preventing any drainage. It gets so bad that it covers the the drain pipe cover, too. - They did not properly compact the dirt that they replaced around the outside sides of the window well, so that after a few heavy rains, the ground had dropped by over a foot around it. My HVAC compressor is only a few feet from the window well, and the delayed compaction eroded (compacted) so much dirt under one side of the compressor that it was tilted at a crazy angle; it had almost slid off into the window well! - They did nothing to manage ground water at all, so lots of it just floods right into the window well. - They have no understanding AT ALL of how their work will impact water drainage and how to mitigate and prevent interior flooding from happening. So what happened as a result of their incompetence? My new, enlarged window well floods to at least four if not five feet deep. It's difficult to fully describe how crazy that it. We're talking hundreds of gallons of water, below grade, pressing against just a regular window. So of course, windows aren't designed to be aquarium walls, and the water pushes its way through all of the cracks and seams in the window, and then runs down to my basement floor where it floods the entire level. Angie's List was created specifically for this exact scenario- to let other potential customers know when a company stands behind its work and takes responsibility for any damages that may follow. Atlantic Deck aka Atlantic Home Improvement, and their president Christ Mallonee, DOES NOT. I paid them over $14,000 for the work, and the repairs to fix the damage they induced will cost me $7,000 to $10,000. (None of this damage is covered by home insurance because it's water that comes in from outside, not a burst pipe, etc.) Avoid them at all cost! The best thing that can happen to them is for them to go out of business so that they stop ruining peoples' houses and creating giant nightmares for regular homeowners! UPDATE: Adding the below after their predictably "not my fault" response to my review. Most of what he said is either outright false, very misleading, or erroneously trying to avoid blame by making claims that are obviously absurd to anyone who knows what they're doing. I contacted them by phone and got no response. I contacted first the lead contractor on my job and got no response. I then contacted the president whose only response was I'm out of town and made no effort to do anything for two days. I DID state in my review that they removed the old carpet and left dryers there for a while. They did not remove the drywall- that's either his false memory or a lie or I don't know what. Now, about his claims about it not being his fault. As I said before, I owned the house for over 10 years before I had this work done. I had never had a single drop of water in my basement before their poor work. I even went to settlement on the house the morning after a hurricane went through the area and it was dry and everything was fine. My house could survive a hurricane, but not the shoddy work of Atlantic Deck/Home Improvement. They used an egress well structure that was unsuited to my house. Contractors who actually know what they're doing have all told me that they should have installed one that went at least two feet deeper, and that the rock gravel they used to fill the bottom was the wrong kind. Insult to injury, they left the well unsealed in two places: along both seems to the foundation, and they made no attempt to plug the weep holes. Anyone who knows what they're doing about water and waterproofing knows that everything they did was bad and clearly indicates a completely lack of knowledge about how to do this kind of job. I fully accept in retrospect that I shouldn't have hired a deck company to install a below grade egress well, but they should have been professional and honest enough to tell me that they had no idea how to do it and I should find someone with that expertise. About the drain being clogged, it was almost definitely clogged because of their work. It had worked for the prior 10 years (if not 30 years since the house was built). Saying that a county inspector inspected it is smoke and mirrors because all an inspector would do is look and say yes, there's a drain. They're not going to test it or scope it and see if it's clear. Inspectors don't do that. Every contractor I've had come to give me estimates to fix Atlantic's poor work has independently told me that. About that "historic 5" of rain" he likes to use as an excuse, my basement floods EVERY time it has rained hard since I threw money away hiring Atlantic Deck. It was not a one time event. It has flooded several times. Which is really besides the point in the first place, because THEY did the work and flooding your basement, ruining your new carpet, etc- once is one too many times! What a crazy excuse. Everything he said about it not being their fault was preventable if they had only been knowledgeable about what they were doing and/or honest enough about it. The back yard would never have flooded above the level of the lip of the window well. His suggestion that it must have is both absurd and a wild attempt to throw misdirection at the issue. There is zero chance it flooded above the the top of the well and came in like a waterfall. Every single contractor who knows anything about how water works well take one look at my situation and tell you that water comes up from the bottom of the well and that the weep holes and lack of sealing the sides only make the situation worse. He says he has video and pictures. Well duh. So do I, as well as a written reports by master plumbers and multiple independent estimates by waterproofing companies who actually know what they're doing, and all of them have been shocked at the work that Atlantic did. They all separately told me, it's companies like Atlantic that keep them in business because companies like Atlantic don't understand water, how it works in and around a house, and make no warranty against water damage. They just do their work and then when they ruin your house, they don't fix it, and then you have to hire these water proofing companies to come in afterward for THOUSANDS of dollars to fix the mess and stop it from recurring. One of the waterproofing estimators who had been doing it for a couple decades kept shaking his head and saying "I've never seen something this bad before" referring to the work Atlantic did. Another company's estimator, who is also a general contractor and specializes in installing below grade safety egress windows, just couldn't believe what they'd done. Regarding his reference to me contacting them on 10/31/14- again, misleading. I contacted them because they left a flyer on my door when they canvassed the community, and I was checking to see if it was the same company, and to express my outrage at their soliciting my service after the h*** they caused me. I guess they were wily because they didn't respond to my simple email, yet here they reference it 18 months later. Very wily. I have to thank them though for mentioning the BBB and VA state contractors board, because I hadn't thought to register my complaints there. Now I will. Do you want a company that knows what they're doing and stands behind their work? Or a company who's specialty is in denying responsibility and making counter accusations? The facts are plain. Their lack of knowledge, poor warranty, and refusal to stand behind their work has caused this nightmare I have to deal with. Don't let them do it to you, too.
Description of Work: Hired them to (1) build a medium size, free-standing, just above ground level deck, and (2) replace a small window well with a larger, fire-escape legal emergency egress to meet county code to have the basement rec room classified as a bedroom.

As the owner, I pride myself on giving excellent service to our customers. Unfortunately, in this instance, we were unable to help resolve their issues as they were unrelated to the project we completed. I always encourage all of our customers to come to me with any concerns so that we can work together to resolve any issues. Please reference our many other positive reviews as a more accurate reflection of the work we do for our customers.

Service, quality and salesmanship were all good. The work crew spent approximately 3 weeks tearing apart the existing multi-level deck and replaced all horizontal walking surfaces, railing, and stairs. They re-built the existing structure to "mimic" the current one, as the foundation and base architecture were still sound. They also removed the existing hot tub and replaced it with a framed in platform which was nice.
