After 8 years, we finally decided it was time to replace our deck. Our existing deck was an embarrassment, warped and splintering boards and plain old ugly. We researched the internet for information on deck materials and searched for images to get an idea of what we wanted. Then we researched Angie's List. We contacted three grade A companies and received estimates within a few days. After comparing all, we decided to hire Atlantic Decking for several reasons: customer reviews (a big plus), the beautiful pictures of their previous work, their suggestions as to design options were very helpful and not at all pushy, and the cost. Their estimate was almost $2,000 lower than another company. Atlantic Decking began building several weeks earlier than anticipated. We were definitely excited about that! The crew arrived on Tuesday, removed our old deck within a few hours, and had it not been for the next few days of pouring rain, our deck would've been completed within less than a week but because of the weather, it took a bit longer than expected. A few days after the deck was finished, we noticed one deck board that seems to be lower than the others so we called Atlantic Decking and they came out the following day and repaired it. No hassle, no questions. Our deck has been finished for several weeks now and we are thrilled with it. The foundation itself is rock solid (as proven after the East coast earthquake), and the color combination of the brown decking with the white rails and black ballusters is striking. We're thrilled that we went with Atlantic Decking. They were professional, courteous, handled all of the paperwork, and our new deck is beautiful! No complaints!
Description of Work: We had our existing deck and stairs completely removed and rebuilt. The new deck was constructed of Azec deck boards which are made from PVC and are placed in a herringbone pattern. A white railing was added with black ballusters, stairs were widened, and lights were installed on the stairs and every other rail post. Gorgeous!

Chris was great to work with. He was responsive to all the e-mails and was the first to give me a fully detailed estimate. He took care of all our permits and HOA drawings. The project went as planned. We did not have to worry about a thing. His guys came on time and cleaned up after themselves at the end of the day. The design of the deck and pergola exceeded our expectations. We are very happy with the overall work and would highly recommend them.

All the Atlantic personnel were professional. The job was pretty simple and the work was excellent.
Description of Work: Atlantic removed the old 8'x8' townhouse deck with 8 stairs and built a 10'x12' pressure treated pine deck with Trex Transcends composite boards on the horizontal surfaces. The work was started within the time-frame promised. The crew worked steadily each week day until the new deck was completed. Small mistakes were corrected promptly.

They were excellent. Chris Mallonee was very professional. His quote was on target, and he was available throughout the work by email or phone. He wasn?t onsite every day, but his project manager was on site every day and was very good. The quality of their work was excellent, especially the carpenters. I would rate them highly and would use them again in the future if necessary.

Summary: Chris, (owner?) of Atlantic Deck Co. seemed to be interested in a simple "in-and-out" cookie cutter job, and didn't appear to have an interest in working on a custom design specification that has attention to detail in the design and specification phase. I *think* that he is quite busy (was told that he had up to 2 months lead time before work could begin on a new contract). That is great, but perhaps he has enough work to be choosy about which jobs to accept and which ones to turn away? Story from start to finish: I contacted Atlantic Deck Co via Angie's List in order to discuss with the contractor some DECK, FENCE, yard-walkway, GAZEBO, and BASEMENT work that my wife and I are considering doing at our home. Chris from Atlantic Deck responded quickly and set up an appointment to meet us at our home to discuss the work and get details for an estimate of the costs. Zeth showed up on time and with a photo album of work they have done in the past, material samples, and product line brochures. We spoke with Zeth for about 2 hours while walking around the house and discussing our ideas. We also provided Zeth with an itemized list of home improvements which he said Atlantic Deck CO. could help with all but one item. Zeth spent an additional hour with us at hour home drawing an overhead diagram of the Deck outline, box step and lower Deck-like patio. Zeth took notes and measurements and talked about ideas/options and concerns. During this in person meeting we had with Zeth he mentioned that based on the square footage an *estimate* for ONLY the deck surface itself would be about $30K. At that time I had mentioned to him that I expected the cost to be in the 5 figure range, but to be closer to 20K than 30K (referring to the *SAME* scope of work, namely the DECK SURFACE ONLY). I also mentioned that we may not be able to all of the improvements this year, (considering the GAZEBO, and the BASEMENT work) but that we could decide on precisely which items may need to be put off once we got an idea of the prices for all the line items. Zeth then left us with the product brochures and said he would get back to us the following week with an estimate. Based on this first meeting, my wife and I were very pleased with our experience with Zeth and were quite confident that Atlantic Deck Co. was going to meet all our expectations. One week later we received an e-mail from Zeth, it contained 2 quite simple overhead drawings which were more precise, and neat than the ones he penciled in at our home, but were basically the same thing, also included was a spreadsheet with line item price quotes for only about one-third the items we had discussed and which had been given in writing and notated as we walked around the house. I replied back to the e-mail asking for the quotes for the missing items and also asking for side-on (instead of "overhead") drawings of the design with respect to 3 specific items which could not be visualized in the overhead drawing and would be needed in order to agree upon the work to be done. I received an e-mail back almost immediately from Chris saying that Atlantic Deck doesn't provide anything but a simple overhead drawing of things with a "FREE quote" and that there was no sense in quoting things that were a few years out since the prices would be invalid in the future anyway. I replied stating that I was asking for drawings related to the determination by the customer (me) of wether what was being quoted and the price of those items was indeed what we envisioned would be delivered. And that we wouldn't be able to *know* what would need to be done in the future and what could be done now unless we had an idea of what the prices for the items were. I got an e-mail back almost instantly, again stating that 3-d drawings (which I had never asked for) were out of the question. And that we had been quoted more items than our budget limit. (which I had never told them?) And that Atlantic Deck didn't wish to provide work product (drawings) that could be used to get quotes from alternative contractors. Well... I never told Atlantic Deck what my budget was, and I never asked for any 3-D drawings. I just wanted to know that when we agree to a price for an item that *IS* vertical as well as horizontal and deep, that the item's price as agreed upon is in fact VERTICAL and fits in with the roof-line and window-lines of the house (can't see that in an overhead only drawing). Zeth appeared to be a very smart, quick and confidence inspiring individual. Chris is by letter and word very polite. However to my ear, the tone of Chris's message is rather brusque. As I mentioned before, I get the impression that he is busy enough that he can cherry-pick easy jobs and let the more complex ones slip by. It reminds me of that old Henry Ford quote about. --You can have it any color you want, as long as you want black.
Description of Work: I asked for the "FREE Estimate". I was prepared to contract for several 10's of thousands of dollars of work. However I never got that far along in the process with Atlantic Deck Co. It seemed apparent while trying to work out details of the quote and the specifications of the items in the quote that Atlantic Deck Co. didn't want to pursue my project.

Yes, We are busy, because we are very good at what we do. We never cherry pick projects and are always grateful for the opportunity to bid on any project large or small. As Owner of Atlantic Deck Company, I take personal responsibility for every estimate we provide and every project we build. Our "A" rating and Super Service Award on Angie's list and our "A" Rating on the Better Business Bureau speaks volumes about the product and service we provide. Every project we build is a custom design with a huge variety of material options that we work with. Our free estimates come with an aerial view layout of the design, proposal and our expertise to help guide you to the final product your are looking for. We also provide the additional views of the project necessary for the completion of your Home Owners Association application as well as obtaining all Building Permits, with a signed contract. We, however are not in the business of providing a free full set (4 separate views requested by the above member)of plans for people to use as they please during the estimate phase. During the height of the spring season we are typically 3-4 weeks out for a start date. I I look forward to the opportunity to help you with your home improvement needs.

Chris was great to work with during the design/proposal effort... punctual, professional, and had a number of unique ideas for the deck. The price was competitive. I received two competitive bids and had to pick one builder. Ultimately, I selected the other bidder although it was very close. I don't doubt that Chris and Atlantic Deck would have built a beautiful deck and would have been great to work with.

Engaged company to add front porch to house. Planned on being flush to corners of existing walls of house. When plans were presented they were not flush due to issues with arial power cables from one corner of house. Insisted that porch be flush and contractor agreed and took action on getting power company estiment to move line. Negotiated on who paid what portion of power company work and some other odds and ends on the porch but vendor was always professional and willing to work things out. Took some time to get work done due to Dominion Power and various storms but we enjoy deck and I would hire again. Also, they made special effort prior to holidays to get side railings done prior to Christmas. Lesson learned is make sure power or other utility responsibilites are clearly defined.

Until it was done, I didn't realize what a major job it would be. Since our deck sits on a cantilevered framework that is integral to our house, I realized that if not done correctly, it might degrade the integrity of of the house itself. The crew seemed to know exactly what to do, and they were professional throughout. The demo took one day, and the rebuilding took 1-1/2 days. The quality of the work was excellent. Our old deck had wrapped around a rounded part of the house that houses our circular stairwell, and there was a gap of several inches. The new deck now fits tightly next to the house. Below the deck there were many flowers, our two heat pumps and various built-in benches. We had covered them, but a messy job might have damaged them. The deck crew was careful with them and nothing was damaged...they cleaned up so that it was cleaner than when they started
Description of Work: The company completely demolished our old deck, which wrapped around our living room, dining room and bedroom, and replaced it with pressure-treated pine decking (screwed) and installed a pressure treated pine deck rail. They hauled away all of the old decking.

The experience was delightful! The company leadership, Chris and Zeth, were professional, knowledgeable, responsive, and helpful. They handled all of the details--which really helped me due to my very busy lifestyle. Not only is the finished product astounding, but the project also progressed very quickly without any hiccups. The work was complete in 4 days! The working crew members were also very polite and experienced. In addition, they cleaned up the site very well after work was complete and they always arrived to work on time. I am so pleased that I have already made plans to do additional work with this company.

We chose to go with Atlantic Deck over two other companies because their price, though not technically the lowest, was reasonable AND we felt that the owner Chris understood our design plans best. He made helpful, but not pushy suggestions?unlike both of the other companies who tried to sell us on "upgrades" we didn't want. Our only minor complaint was a bit of slow responsiveness at the beginning. However, once the job was underway, it was no longer an issue. Chris and project manager Zeth were both very reachable, and appeared at the work site often to oversee and answer questions. The work crew of three were very prompt and extremely skilled. (I work at home and had the privilege of seeing the structure take shape from the beginning!) From start to finish Atlantic Deck: supplied sketched plan with many of our design wishes included; made excellent recommendations on aspects we were unsure of; removed concrete steps from back door; created a solid frame for porch and deck; used excellent quality materials; replaced, without protest, a handful of things that we were unhappy with (such as a piece of beadboard that was crooked, a warped banister, etc.) throughout the process and after final inspection; and finally they worked quickly and efficiently! We were extremely pleased with the quality of work done by Atlantic Deck Co. as well as their customer service. And, we are VERY happy with our new back porch!

Chris Mallonee, CEO of Atlantic Deck, came to my home upon my request, and spoke with me regarding our ideas for a deck. Within a couple days he provided a detailed quote with numerous options for us to consider (different quality decking, balusters, gate, staining, etc.) Once we made our decision, he promptly delivered a contract and drawings for submitting to our HOA. Atlantic Deck was able to start construction within two weeks of the HOA approval. The two workers were extremely professional and polite, required no access to my home, and maintained a very safe and clean work site. The deck construction progressed very efficiently, county inspectors were scheduled in timely manner, and the entire project was completed in a couple of weeks. At first look, the work looked very nice. The aspects of the project that I was not happy with included a hideous, oversize black converter box for the stair lighting, that they installed right next to my door on the deck level. No one checked with me about placement prior to drilling into my siding. I do commend them for promptly relocating it below the deck upon my request. The quality of the work for the required (by building code) stair lighting was poor. The wiring is basically stapled to the bottom of the stairs and deck, taking the shortest route, not a route that is aesthetically pleasing from ground level. Wires are hanging down and within the first week, three of the lights did not work. My other concerns include what strikes me as an excessive amount of cracking wood, especially in the 4x4s on the railing, and poor workmanship in cutting the angles where pieces of the railing come together, resulting in large gaps in the angles and corners of the top of the railing. I contacted Atlantic Deck with my concerns, and they are scheduled to perform a warranty repair on a broken piece of cap railing and look at the other items this week.
Description of Work: Atlantic Deck provided quote, drawings for HOA approval, filed for county building permit, and constructed an approximately 12' x 20' deck off our second floor with 4' wide stairs down to yard. Decking was grade C pressure treated lumber, railing included black metal balusters.

We replaced the cracked pine rail cap. There was a tight joint and no cracks at the time of installation. Something everyone should be aware of when using pressure treated pine material for their deck, is that because it is a natural material it is not without defects. It also will go through a drying out period and will have some of the joints shrink causing what you see in the posted picture. It is also very typical and expected that there will be surface cracks in the material after is dries completely. We ofcourse warranty material failure and will replace anything that is not typical without question. Although pressure treated pine is viable option for your deck, if you do not want surface cracks and some potential shrinking, do not use pressure treated pine.

Very Good. B+. Chris came out to my house within a couple of days of my first call. He was responsive and on time. I already had a good idea of what I wanted but we talked through some additional ideas. He gave me an estimate in about a week, that included some of the options we talked about, like Trex vs. wood, built in fire pit or not, etc. The estimate was itemized which was very helpful. We were slow on getting back to Chris because we arranged for a few other estimates. He was not the highest or the lowest estimate. When I did call him back, he was able to schedule our job about 2 weeks later, which was great because we were excited to get it done. They started on time and finished on time. I had requested a couple of changes, like adding a few more lights, adding an extra step, and adding a trap door so we could store a ladder under the deck. Chris was responsive and followed through on the requests without a problem. The deck was completed in under 2 weeks. The thing that didn't go as expected: There were some details that were never discussed during the planning process that I was surprised by. For example, I assumed that the backboards to the steps would be Trex (I'm building a Trex deck so why would the step be Trex but the backboards wouldn't). I also assumed that the outer edges of the deck would all be finished off, meaning, no gaping holes for small children to climb under. Never having built a deck before, I would not have known to specifically ask such things. When I brought these to Chris's attention he was calm and responsive and corrected them, but one of them ended up costing me a little extra. Overall, he handled it well. The only other disappointment was that part of my lawn was ruined in the process. Now, my back yard lawn is not in great shape anyway. However, when they were tearing out the hot tub, they laid the hot tub cover on the grass, which killed the grass. So now I have a yellow spot in the grass about 2ftx4ft. In my ratings, I translated these into a B for professionalism. Overall, good price, great quality, delivered on time, and responsive. We love our new deck! I would recommend Chris and his team.
Description of Work: I already had a good idea of what I wanted with the deck, which was tearing out the hot tub that was built into the deck, keep existing frame, taking up all the old floor boards, tearing down privacy walls, creating a second level deck where the hot tub use to be, using Trex for the entire deck and building new privacy walls. This also included stair case lighting and some extra lights on the posts of the walls. The deck is about 24ftx20ft. No small task.

I contacted the company on May 28th to set up an appointment. Chris came out on June 9th. I showed him my property map and explained that I wanted a screened in porce, deck and fencing. He took measurements and said he would send me an estimate by Friday. I never heard from him. I waited about 10 days and then emailed him and he never responded. We wanted something more than the cookie cutter deck/porch and my guess is that he didnt have the expertise to do it, so he just didnt respond. All in all, a big waste of time.

He was extremely professional, on time, and courteous. He also had some great design ideas, and offered us some Trex products without applying a high pressure sales pitch. Atlantic was in our top two contractors but we decided to go with a slightly cheaper company. Keep in mind, Atlantic's price was right on the money but I wanted to save a few. No idea if they can do the work, but the intital parts of the deal were all good. Definitely give Chris a call!

Chris, owner, and Zeth came by to provide an estimate. What distinguished them was that they seemed more creative in suggesting how the porch may be built (e.g., how to tie into the house, how to run the stairs down to the ground). They were frank in describing the impact of various options on the cost of the project. They were not the cheapest of the estimates I received but definitely on the lower end of the spectrum. The project began in late December (if I recall correctly) and lasted until the end of February. The duration was due to the snow and lack of timeliness by the gutter sub-contractor. The crew consisted generally of two workers who did not require any oversight on our part. They pretty much came in the morning and did their thing. The porch/deck itself looks great. We used plain pressure-treated pine for the wood and black aluminum balusters. Chris was very accommodating with handling requests (such as adding a dog door to the porch and a gate at the top of the stairs). I would definitely recommend them to a friend or family member.

Despite the lousy weather during the implementation of our deck (lots of rain), the team did an excellent job putting in the footers in time for the county inspections. The craftsmanship of the deck is very high quality including movement of a drainspout to fit nicely with the deck. The stairway was built very soundly with excellent craftmanship as well. This team was very well experienced! The stamped concrete patio turned out very nicely too, and was a much needed addition to our backyard. Also to mention that the communications with Chris, the owner and project lead, was very effective (via email and voicemail as well as in person); he was very responsive to my questions. We are very happy with the deck and patio and happily refer others to Atlantic Deck.
Description of Work: We had our 9 year old deck replaced and extended with stairs moved to a new location along with a stamped concrete patio put in at the bottom of the stairs connecting to our basement stairwell. Trex material was used on the flooring of the deck, and the old deck was hauled away. A dumpster was used for about 4 days in our driveway to haul away the old deck.
