About us

Smeda Design Build, LLC, is a small home-building and remodeling business that has been serving families in the Northern Virginia for more than 20 years. Ralph Smeda, General Contractor and CEO, is the son of a doctor of psyhology who followed his dad's footsteps and earned a degree in psychology from a liberal arts college. He approaches each job by establishing clear communications with his clients and prepares them for what to expect during the building and remodeling process. He sometimes jokes that his job is half construction and half marriage counseling. He works with his clients, offering design ideas or working through them with one of several architechts that he has been in business with for years. He has taken on both large and small jobs, from building 10,000-square foot homes in Fairfax County and "popping up" (remodeling) homes in Arlington County to finishing basements, kitchen and bathroom remodling, window replacement, deck-building, drywalling, etc. If he deems a job out of his scope of work, he will be glad to refer you to someone in his strong network. Ralph keeps his business small (5 full-time employees) because he likes the ability to stop by the job sites of all his jobs on a daily basis. He subcontracts when needed. Smeda Design Build employees and all subcontractors are people Ralph has worked with for years and has come to trust.

Outstanding - could not have been a better experience. Ralph and his team did what they said they do, at the planned price and on the planned schedule. They involved us in all the decisions, explained things clearly, and offered options with pros and cons.

I met with Ralph Smeda from Smeda Design Build to discuss and get a quote on building an addition above our detached garage. Since we have other major renovation projects going on, we decided to hold off on building the addition. I will consider calling him again when we are ready to move forward with our project. He has completed an addition for my brother (house in Burke, VA) and I am very impressed with his work.
