Services we offer
Siding. Roofing. Window replacement. Painting. We can also install siding products from the James Hardie line.
Both services were great! Between Regan & Seth getting back to us in a timely manner and supplying a quick quote, then Johnny & the crew performing the tasks at hand with great efficiency... Next we need any painting done - Jacob's ladder will be our guys! On the house painting - they repaired water damaged areas, when they had questions they asked, they cleaned up every day before leaving and they were always pleasant! On the iron work painting - they were careful to move and not paint the plants in the area, they cleaned up all the mess made and they made the railings look brand new!
Description of Work: We had Jacob's Ladder perform two separate services on our house. They repaired/painted the exterior of our house and then stripped/repainted all of our iron fencing on our house.

Seth and his team did an outstanding job. I would highly recommend them. We had another painter recommended to us as we moved to Richmond from out of town. Our initial painter was a problem after the work started. A friend recommended Seth and Jacob's Ladder, and he saved the day. Seth met with us to establish a precise estimate and plan. He navigated a difficult schedule (on our part not his) and did awesome work. His team is professional and courteous. They did exactly as promised. I would not consider another painter, and we will be using them for several remodeling projects in the future.

Jacob's Ladder is an excellent choice if you are considering any type of renovation to your home. I used them to do a complete gut and renovation of my kitchen, lift and level a sag in my floor and add a privacy fence. Seth and his crew were excellent and they made me feel very comfortable through the process. On time every step of the way and so professional. Even years after the reno he is always happy to lend his advice for our DIY projects.

This is a very good company to work with. From the beginning, Seth was very responsive to my needs and worked with me to identify the work that we could have done to fit my budget. The painters did an excellent job and everything was done very quickly. While I did not observe much of the actual labor, my neighbors commented that the workers never really seemed to take a break, even on hot days. This seems to be in-line with what others have posted. While installing new siding on the rear porch, a hole was made in the drywall on the inside of our upstairs bathroom. I notified Seth of this and his guys came and fixed it the next day. There is no indication that any damage was ever done to the wall, so I guess I can verify their drywall skills too. Seth was always very easy to get in touch with, and rarely took longer than a couple of hours to respond to my emails. He came and inspected the work, and even had the carpenters re-do the woodwork at the base of my front door pillar that had rotted away. Never underestimate what a new coat of paint will do for the curb appeal of your house. It's like a face-lift. Also keep in mind that FHA loans can't be given for houses that have peeling paint, so by ignoring the problem, you are possibly disqualifying potential buyers from making an offer. I will be contacting Jacob's Ladder next year when we get our old windows replaced. I was very pleased with the experience.
Description of Work: 1) Scraping and spot-priming of all loose or chipped paint 2) Removal of existing porch screen and replacement 3) Removal of wood slats (circa 1950) and replacement on gable above front door with Hardiplank. 4) Removal of wood slats on sides of screened in porch with Hardiplank. 5) Repair of damaged molding at base of pillar for gable 6) Installation of gutter on rear upstairs addition and a larger gutter below to handle increased water volume.

Was installed in April 2015, but one year later am noticing installation issues with both. Have had difficultly getting the company to come take care of the buckling of the siding. When a professional finally came to try to repair, I was told that the siding on my porch was improperly installed. I have been told by Justin that it is heat and cold's fault. I have more nails in my porch beams and still plenty of buckling. I have been told they have done all they can do!!! I have done quite a bit of research, and numerous contractors have said in 99% of the cases of buckling, it is caused by improper installation. I rest my case. I am so disappointed. There are other problems, that I won't even address. I won't recommend them.

Beautifully! A gentleman came out and talked to us to discuss an estimate, and unlike some others that we had estimates from, there was no pressure, and the cost was significantly lower. The time taken on the project itself was fairly short and intense, and it included the removal of all of the wood and nails from the original wood and a cleanup so thorough that I have been gardening all around my home and a year later have found only one wayward nail in some heavy grass. The siding job itself was so well done that our next door neighbor is now considering hiring them after seeing how well it all turned out. We love the way our home looks now and appreciate the value added. We were so satisfied that now that we need to have our roof replaced, we are looking into hiring them again. Additionally, these people were absolute professionals, so thoughtful of our privacy as they worked on the home. I had a one-year-old, and they were as unintrusive as could be at a time when that was especially important.
Description of Work: We needed to have vinyl siding installed to replace the wood that was starting to become the breakfast, lunch, and dinner of some especially diligent woodpeckers.

Used Angie's List to search for a provider to fix an attic vent that pulled loose from siding during the bad storms that came through Richmond VA on June 20th. Our attic was exposed to weather and critters. Found this company, liked their rankings/reviews and website. So, called them in AM of June 21, 2016 during their posted business hours. Received voice mail which said if calling during business hours, leave a message and someone will call back within an hour; if calling outside of business hours, someone will call as soon as possible. My husband left a message with our call-back number and brief description of our problem. Again, we called during their normal business hours expecting a call back within an hour as was stated on their voicemail message. It is now June 23, 2016 and we still haven't received a call back. If you snooze you lose - found a company outside of Angie's List that responded promptly and fixed our problem within 3 hours of us calling. Our problem has been fixed.

We feel terrible this happened and do apologize. The storms did a number all over Richmond, including our building. We unfortunately lost the ability to check our voicemail that week but have changed from a local to web-based system so this will no longer be an issue. Thank you for the feed-back. We appreciate all reviews as they help us better serve our current and future clients.

Johnnie showed up to power wash the house right on time. He used commercial cleaning solution and was very careful to avoid damaging plants, awning and outside furniture by thoroughly rinsing all surfaces before and after cleaning. In fact, he did such an excellent job we thought he had also painted the house...it sparkled! Johnnie also cleaned our patio furniture (no extra charge). What a pleasant surprise. I offered to give him extra money, but he wouldn't take it. The next day, the paint crew showed up right on time and they got right to work removing all storm windows and down-spouts before painting any surfaces. Again, they were very careful to avoid getting paint on cement-fibre siding, plants, bricks and our new asphalt driveway. After the first day, they cleaned up and removed their tools from our property. The next day they showed up again early and stayed till dusk. Like the previous day, the paint crew did a great job and went over places that we thought needed special attention and repairs. Once again, Johnnie got personally involved and helped the paint crew finish their job. He treated our project as though we were close friends or relatives, taking the time to double-check every aspect of the job. When the job was finished, they left our property the same way they found it, but even nicer. On a scale of one to ten, I would definitely rate them a solid 15! We'll never recommend anyone other than Jacob's Ladder to our friends and neighbors.

The work went very well from start to finish. We received bids from five premier Richmond, VA area siding companies, each with top ratings from Angie's List, and chose Jacobs Ladder because both their detailed bid and their project manager (Justin Pittman) best addressed the specific requirements of our work. Their knowledge of carpentry was impressive and their proposed scope of work was superior to some of the approaches suggested by some of the other bidders in certain important respects. I spent considerable time researching vinyl siding, weather-resistive barriers (WRB's), and best window-flashing practices for residing jobs, etc before selecting vinyl siding and Jacobs Ladder, and so I think I am likely better informed (and pickier) than the average siding customer as to the vital importance of skilled and best installation practices. Justin is very experienced and was able to work well with me and answered all questions or concerns promptly throughout the job. Their crew chief, Victor, was also a very experienced siding and window installer, also with considerable carpentry experience, and was also very responsive to any questions or concerns throughout the job. For example, they took the initiative to contact a Tyvek installation specialist to ensure proper installation of the Tyvek weather-resistive barrier according to current Tyvek air-barrier installation guidelines, and proper integration of the butyl-based window flashing with the WRB prior to beginning the work. After I also talked with the Tyvek specialist, Jacobs Ladder and I agreed on an appropriate Tyvek-recommended method of installing the Tyvek WRB and window flashing for my particular application, and Justin asked that I monitor and approve their flashing around the first window and the first side of the house before they proceeded with the rest of the installation, to ensure my satisfaction. The quality of the WRB itself, the quality of its installation, and the quality of its integration with the butyl-based window flashing are, in my opinion, the three most important aspects of a proper, weather-resistive vinyl siding installation, and I was very happy with how Jacob's Ladder did this work. The Jacobs Ladder crew as also very experienced and industrious, and never had any down-time on the job. As I monitored their work, I would address any questions to Victor, and any questions or concerns were always promptly discussed and addressed in a professional and courteous manner. I was very happy with the quality of work done by each crew member, and each was courteous, positive in attitude and professional throughout the entire job. Because I chose to have all the existing Masonite siding torn off prior to installation of the WRB and siding, we had the benefit of being able to check the condition of the underlying sheathing, to ensure no rot, prior to installing the WRB and new siding. We had no rotting sheathing, but we did discover a rotting framing member beneath the top section of our front arched window, so I elected to replace the entire window with a 'new-construction' window. As the window had to be special-ordered, this aspect of the work was delayed slightly until the window arrived, but it was promptly installed once it arrived. We also elected to replace our existing dining room bay window with a new 'replacement window' to eliminate minor but annoying gaps due to normal settling, but we did not replace any of our other double-hung wooden casement windows as they were all still in good shape. On those windows, we simply ensured that new, butyl-based window flashing was installed and properly integrated with the WRB, to best ensure continued, leak-free service for years to come, and this work was done very professionally. As examples of the professionalism of their work, as I had a continuous ridge vent installed during a recently preceding roof replacement, Jacobs Ladder rightly recommended that the existing louver-vents in my attic be boarded over during their siding installation, to prevent interference of the old louver-based attic ventilation with the new ventilation provided by the ridge vent. This approach is a generally-recommended best-practice in attic ventilation that utilizes a ridge vent, and so I was pleased that they recommended and implemented that approach. In addition, when wrapping the window sills, they neatly under-cut the window jamb-liners so they could install the aluminum trim coil under the jamb liners and all the way up to the intersection of the window sill and stool to ensure the most complete and water-tight sill wrapping, an approach that is also considered a best-practice, but not done by all installers. In addition, rather than drilling periodic holes through my existing soffit to ensure adequate soffit venting to work with my recently-installed ridge vent as some bidders had suggested, they completely removed my existing pressed-board soffit and vent prior to installing new, continuous Invisivent vinyl soffits, thus ensuring the maximum soffit ventilation to work in conjunction with my ridge vent. Overall, their use of best-practices in installing the siding, soffits, window trim and other aspects of the work set them apart from some of the other bidders, and resulted in a superior end product and installation. At the end of the job, they suggested I take a couple of days to inspect the finished work and get back with them with any questions or changes. I did a thorough inspection, and gave them a punch-list/list of touch-ups/questions, and after discussing each of them, they immediately made all agreed-upon modifications or touch-ups, which again ensured a superior installation that I am well-satisfied with. In summary, I believe Jacobs Ladder demonstrated a superior understanding of and regard for the particular needs of my siding and window installation work during the bidding process, gave me a very experienced Project Manager (Justin Pittman) and Crew Chief (Victor), used experienced, conscientious and well-supervised crew, and installed my siding, weather-resistive barrier (Tyvek), butyl-based window flashing, aluminum window trim, soffit vents, new-construction and replacement windows and porch railing using best practices, and didn't leave until all agreed-upon punch-list/touch-up items were completed to my satisfaction. I am particularly happy with the quality of the project-management services provided by Justin and the installation provided by Victor, and believe they are as experienced and as conscientious a team as you will find in the Richmond area. As the products and installation prove themselves in the next few years, I may provide updates to this report.

Justin, the owner, decided the morning of our scheduled appointment that he didn't want to do the job. I work for a living and can't just come and go from my job whenever I want. I scheduled time off from work to meet Justin at 2:30pm about doing some siding repairs only to discover at 2:45pm he had sent me an email earlier in the day telling me I'd be better off calling someone else. Again, I work for a living. I do not check my personal email while I am working. Very unprofessional! If you are going to cancel you don't do it in an email the day of. Now I am not getting paid for the time I'm away from work and I will have to take off more time to meet someone else for the repairs. His website says they are "constantly striving to exceed our customer's expectations". He didn't try very hard with this one. Not only will Jacob's Ladder not be making money off me for siding repair and possibly total siding replacement, but I will definitely not be calling them for my next project...complete window replacement.

We are very saddened to receive such a poor grade. We do believe, however, that there's some misrepresentation of what actually happened here. We originally were contacted by the client to look at a different contractors work to judge if it was installed "faulty" or not. While we do know almost everything about siding and painting, performing and providing written inspections of other contractors work is not something we provide. We actually spoke with this client on the telephone 2 days before we were supposed to meet to inform her that inspections of other contractors work is not something we can provide. At that time, we cancelled the appointment. Even though we cancelled the appointment, while were in her neighborhood so we did stop by the clients house to let her know that it did appear to be a poorly installed job but we could not provide anything further. This was conveyed via email on the day of the originally scheduled estimate. While we are saddened to receive such a poor grade due to a miscommunication, we are proud to say we did provide assistance in the situation (at no cost to the client) and were not part of the poorly installed siding. We are sorry that the client did not hire us originally to perform the siding work which caused such a unfortunate situation.

I had Window World come and give me an estimate for new windows at my home. It was a terrible experience - from the sales pitch, to the salesman, to the price (over $7,500 for 12 windows). I reached out to Seth and Jacob's Ladder after reading some Angie's list reviews hoping for redemption. He and his team were perfect. He was timely and flexible with getting out to provide me with an estimate (as I was closing on my house and wanted the work done ASAP) and when the windows were installed the crew did an awesome job. When I arrived home from work around 5 they were still in the midst of installing but by the time they left around 7 you would have never even known they had stepped foot onto my property. Their clean up and professionalism is impeccable. Seth also noticed some siding that was installed incorrectly which needed to be corrected to support the new windows and he made sure the job was done right. Following the window install Seth and his team came to the rescue again to repaint the exterior of my home. They were timely, did a great job, and again were incredibly clean. No paint splatters or any issues. I highly recommend Jacob's Ladder if you're looking for affordable and professional work. The full team seemed committed to pushing out a solid work product and I will definitely consider using them again in the future.

Salesmen, project manager and painters were all friendly, punctual, and explained their services and pricing. They cleaned up when appropriate, and always kept us informed of what was going on, what was about to happen, or when decisions would be needed about the direction of repairs or replacement material. All work was performed excellently and when an occasional mishap occurred, they usually caught it before we did - and then fixed to our satisfaction immediately. Friendly, business-like work through all matters. They were eager to please. We are very happy wth their work.
Description of Work: Pepainted our whole house, a 2500 sq ft colonial. This required replacing and repairing multiple rotten boards, scraped and sanded other boards, repaired or replaced missing, broken or rotten wood, painted both our 2500 sq f 2 story house, but also our storage shed. Did a great job, very professional at all levels - I chose a great company to do this work. We also asked them to scrape and paint ALL of our windows, and they did a great job with them, too - eliminating the need to replace them. The painters worked well, worked diligently and did great work. Nettie was a great painter - his craftmanship was excellent and he kept both us and his supervisor informed of every issue and decision necessary. Reagan warned me they often find more damage that needs to be repaired once they get at the detailed work, and it was just as he said. Cost another $1500 - but we anticipated it and wanted it done right. In the end, I cannot imagine any better painters than the guys from Jacobs Ladder.

Although not the least expensive of three proposals, the corrective measures to clean, sand, scrap, paint front porch columns, front door frame, front door and railings, and rear door and frame far exceeded the other recommended proposals. The cost was well worth the quality of the completed job. The painter was thorough, very neat, obviously experienced, pleasant and professional. The house looks new. I would highly recommend Jacob's ladder. The weather played havoc on scheduling the job, but the wait was worth it. Very pleased with the job and highly recommend this company.

I contacted 3 companies total for quotes. Although all of the companies were great, I chose to go with Jacob's Ladder because the price was good, and a detailed, patient rep, Justin, who came out and explained it all to me. We had some things come up that made it harder to get the siding in the spring of 15, we ended up getting it in the fall of 15, but Justin was very patient, responsive and understanding. We also had new back doors installed which held up construction and the company that installed them told us one date, but then it got pushed back 3 weeks, which put the siding to a halt. I was in contact with Justin about all of it and felt horrible, although I couldn't control it, that it was putting things on hold. He was very patient and understanding. The install was always on time, the guys cleaned up every day and were easy to talk to. When I needed to let my dogs out and they were working they caught on quick to make sure to shut a deck gate so they didn't get out. My doorbell had never worked, even at inspection time when I bought my home 9 years ago, and they fixed it! Justin told me that if we wanted new fixtures outside to get them and they would install them for us, I was so excited because I hated the old ones. I know this is probably all normal practice, but I feel like I have a new house with the new siding, new outdoor fixtures and a working doorbell. I have fallen in love with my home again. I would use this company again if I needed to, and I would recommend them to anyone who asks. Very professional, clean, organized and punctual.

Jacobs Ladder (Justin) was professional and responsive. I had originally gotten quotes back in the fall of 2014 from several companies, but sticker shock put me on hold. Jacobs Ladder fell in the middle of the pack in terms of price, but the excellent Angie's List reviews and a gut comfort level with Justin had us reconsider in the spring. We had Justin come back out in the spring (along with two other companies) and ultimately decided on Jacob's Ladder. They were able to start the work within a week of our color selection and deposit. Initially, Justin had prepared me for a potential 2-4 week window depending on material delivery times and crew availability. What a nice surprise! Speaking of the crew, Victor and his team were fabulous. It was the tropical heatwave of 2015, with several days in a row of near 100 degrees with oppressive humidity, but they showed up early each day and worked well into the evening to keep the job moving. So impressive! The entire job, which was huge, took less than two weeks to complete and boy does it look fabulous. In addition to the siding, they replaced an ill-hung garage entry door, replaced my old light fixtures with new ones (that I purchased), replaced all my trim with custom cut Hardie trim and painted all areas that needed a touch up to match the arctic white hardie, My house looks brand new! The only 'glitch' was losing internet for a couple of days. The verizon wire must have gotten jostled in the process, and so they (verizon) had to come out and run a new line. It really wasn't surprising, though, given the magnitude of the job. Couldn't be more pleased with the work and the ease of communication with Justin. He was in constant contact with me during the process with updates about progress and materials. Victor and his crew were also easy to deal with as far as any minor tweaks along the way. I would absolutely use them again and have already had lengthy conversations with two of my neighbors who are considering the same project.
Description of Work: Replaced all 20 year old Masonite and wood siding with HardiePlank siding. Entire house redone including all trim, lights, and even an entry door off the garage.

We had Jacob's Ladder re-side our house (formally wood siding) with new vinyl siding, as well as re-floor two of our porches. Out of several quotes we received they were by far the least expensive. Justin was very helpful in walking us through the different options available which allowed for us to receive a job that fit our budget and made out house look great! There were three separate crews that came out to work, painting crew, porch crew and siding crew, and all were very diligent and respectful of our property and finished their work in a professional and timely manner. The entire job only took a couple of weeks and would have been done sooner if we hadn't experienced heavy rain many days. Our house looks new again and we would certainly recommend Justin and the team at Jacob's Ladder to all our friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: Repaired, primed and painted dental work and roof trim, re-floored front porch and upstairs porch, as well as re-sided entire house in vinyl siding.

Went with Jacobs Ladder after estimates from 4 contractors. JL had best price for work proposed and were most ready to answer all questions and concerns. The PM (Justin) was very thorough and courteous and worked with us through the HOA approval process and accommodated install timing as best he could--they actually arrived earlier that originally estimated (usually 3-4 weeks from contracting). Daily workers were timely and thorough each day and cleaned up when they were done. Would definitely recommend them.

Took me a while to find a siding contractor who would do such a small job. But Seth with Jacob's Ladder was quick to respond and came out to give me an estimate right away. He also was very honest and up front with me. He researched my siding to find out if they still made it. It was discontinued, however he was able to find something pretty close to what I have. He ordered it right away and dropped it off at my home. Then called to let me know that they would get to it by Friday or Saturday after his crew finished up another job. Well needless to say his crew showed up on Friday evening @ 6:00pm and was finished by 7:15pm. They knew exactly what needed to be done and did an excellent job. Oscar, who I think was the head of his crew walked me around to show me each area they fixed. They were very professional and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this company and would use them again.

Justin came out to our house to initially give us the quote on our windows being replaced as well as having the trim work wrapped to prevent future rot of the outdoor wood trim. After 5 quotes from various companies, we decided on using Jacob's Ladder because we felt like they would do the best work, the price was reasonable, and they used Simonton windows instead of generic vinyl windows (which by the way for vinyl windows they don't look cheap like some brands). We originally had three windows in the kitchen replaced as a test run to see how well they did on instillation before committing to the whole project. We have over 30 windows in our colonial home and we are very particular about the product as well as the instillation. The process went very well so we proceeded with the rest of the job and had them order the remaining windows. We had the rest of our windows installed in February. They worked with our very particular schedule and even showed up to work on the days that it was snowing. The first crew that install our windows was good however the second crew that we had was phenomenal and surpassed our expectations. Chris was our point person this second time and he was professional, followed through with things, particular about the work bring done correctly, and didn't mind us asking questions. Josh was the one who did most of the wrapping on our windows and was great as well. He was very thorough and particular as well and didn't mind questions either. If a problem arouse during installation Josh or Chris would immediately notify us and give us our options. When the work was completed they cleaned up outside very well and when they needed to be inside they cleaned up their mess as well and would always take all materials outside of the house at the end of the day. Josh and Chris made the instillation process go smoothly. One of the locks on the windows broke during instillation and the regional salesperson for Simonton windows came out that week and replaced the lock; Justin made sure that they followed through as promised. Everyone at Jacob's Ladder made this a pleasant experience and we would highly recommend them!
