Very disappointing experience, previously used The Roofing Company for slate work a number of times, however the remodeling division was an end to end disappointment after months and months of false starts... Trying to get basic details from them for insurance was a total mess... Not to mention the marginal work done, the GM actually pointed out some sub par repairs, not realizing his own guys did them... At the end of the day I let them go so I could get movement from other contractors, and they still kept the $11K deposit, with only about $3K of actual work performed, instead of owning up to the sub par performance and providing a portion of the money back given the circumstances, they kept it all... Other contractors turning quotes in a couple of days that have not been a problem for insurance, same or higher cost in many cases... Telling me the remodeling company cannot even handle the basics in some cases..

Chuck was very professional. He took pictures inside the attic and on the roof. He explained how the water got into the chimney, how it could be fixed and the price in detail. The crew came and the work was done correctly. They were efficient and helpful. I will use them again.
Description of Work: Repaired a leak in the roof that was caused by water leaking form the chimney.

I described the experience above. It was as if the company had never undertaken remodeling a bathroom with plaster walls and baseboard radiator heat. Supervision of subcontractors was nonexistent unless we complained. The same can be said for attention to detail. When we signed the contract, we were assured that we would have a timeline or when things were going to happen. After the plumbing debacle, we were again assured by the owner that we would have a timeline. It never materialized. This is not our first experience with renovations. We had two 100 foot oak trees fall on the house during the 2009 nor'easter. The Remodeling Company's contractor oversight was not what my husband and I had experienced in the past.
Description of Work: While, overall, we are pleased with the results, getting there was tough. The biggest criticism was lack of general contractor oversight and a plumber that was less than satisfactory. We have an 50 year old home with plaster walls, and radiator baseboard heat. The system runs off a boiler. We told the supervisor that the heating vanes on the baseboard heating unit needed to be removed before demolition could begin. They tried to do the demolition without removing the vanes and having the plumber blank off the system. The vanes were destroyed during the demolition and we had to pay for new ones. Unfortunately, when the supervision finally came to the realization that the system needed to be secured at the back bathroom, the plumber obviously did not have a clue about how to do it. First, he drained the boiler, which he did not need to do, and secured it. Then, he tried to blank off the heating system at the back bathroom, but failed to do it completely. When he attempted to realign the boiler, it wouldn't get pressure--because the system had not been completely blanked off. We were without hot water on a weekend, and called Lawson (who has the maintenance contract on the boiler), to make an emergency call and figure out what was wrong. Because the heating system had not been correctly secured at the back bathroom (the one undergoing renovation), when the service technician tried to get pressure in the boiler, he could not. I walked back to the back bathroom to check for problems, and open the door to a geyser. Water was blowing all over the bare wood in ceiling and walls. The service technician from Lawson capped fitting that had been left open, and proceeded to pressurize to boiler. He indicated that if the water had got lower in the boiler, the new $5000 boiler would have damaged beyond repair and would have to have been replaced. Dryers had to be used to dry the wood and walls for several days before sheet rock could be installed. We put drywall up rather than plaster. The walls had to be remudded and repainted twice. The painters painted over unsatisfactory work. Portions of all four walls had to be sanded down, remudded, sanded down again, and repainted. The plummer drilled a hole about a quarter inch all around for the plumbing that connected the pedestal sink we purchased (the sink that came with the package would not fit the space available). My husband has to figure out how to seal the space. The plumber did not install the shower head correctly, and we had to have it re-installed.

The Remodeling Company representatives were excellent. They explained the upgrade options, the approximate timeline of work, they were great. The removal of the tub, sink, toilet went quickly. The plumbing was challenging - the plumbers did not communicate that they were finished with the job, I found out when the site foreman called to make arrangements for the next contractor. When the newly installed pipe leaked, the site foreman arrived within 15 minutes to access and repair the damage, he was excellent. Some of the finished could have been neater, a bit more caulk around the bathtub faucet would have been nice. Overall, the experience was good.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel - remove tub, sink and toilet. Install new tub, tile on floor and wall around tub, drywall repair and replacement, paint, install light fixture, sink and toilet.

There was a very slight communication hiccup between my meeting with the foreman and the start of the job, but that could have been because I requested an earlier start date, which they agreed to. When the guys came, they were professional and courteous to a man. The first new tub was very slightly chipped, and they noticed, told me, and replaced it, even though that messed with the schedule. I got a little panicked with the tile job before it was grouted, and they were not only reassuring, but told me it would be done to my satisfaction, no matter what it took. They made the changes I asked for, and this also threw the schedule off by another day. The foreman, Pat, in particular, did a really great job of addressing my concerns. In the end, I have a beautiful new bathroom. I highly recommend this company as they are very trustworthy and do excellent, quality work.
Description of Work: I needed to have my bathtub replaced. It was a one piece fiberglass unit including the surround. The Remodeling Company, which is the sister company to the Roofing Company (they did a great job replacing my roof), came out and gave me an estimate, the 3rd that I had gotten. The salesman who came out, Gardener Snead, was amazing. His price for cast iron and tile, versus the price for acrylic (the other 2 companies) was competitive. If I had chosen acrylic, it would have been cheaper than those other guys (Bath Fitters and Rebath). I decided on a cast iron tub and tile, and he went with me to choose the products used. The places he took me were great, and more important, he let me know when I was going over budget. I did end up spending more than originally planned, but he let me know as it was happening, so there would be no surprises. He set out what I could have in the original budget, and how much the extras I had chosen would cost. Never did I feel pressured one way or another. After that was decided, I met with the project manager and foreman, and we set a date for the work to be done. They removed my old worn out acrylic unit, and replaced it with a new cast iron tub with a ceramic tile surround. Completely beautiful job!

This was a horrible experience from the start. Salesman was very pushy. The job horribly overpriced, the materials subpar and the installation amateur at best. We are still waiting for our "2 week" job to be completed 6 weeks later. Serial delays due to workman damaging parts. Some areas of poor installation on the sheetrock which I assume were completely ignored in the hopes we wouldn't care. The tile work was amateur, cut marks visible, poorly fitted tile. I wish I had never begun the project.
Description of Work: This was supposed to be a very simple job-rip out an existing small bathroom to the studs and replace sheetrock, vanity and tub. We were told to expect the job completed in under 2 weeks.

We give REMODELCO generally high marks. Under different circumstances, we might well pursue the project and we would certainly invite a bid for other work they do (roofing, windows, etc). Pros: 1. Structure of design contract--insist on this. It protects you and is fair to both parties. 2. We made lots of detailed material choices rather than using allowances to nail the pricing down. We took our time doing this and REMODELCO was very patient with us. 3. Employees were professional and courteous throughout. Mixed Bag: 1. Subcontractors. Liked some, others not so much. One supplier was difficult to deal with, so we opted not to give them our business. 2. The design is done by a house designer vice architect. Nothing wrong with that, although REMODELCO could be more up front about the credentials of the designer. I repeatedly referred to him as the architect and was never corrected; learned of the alternative qualifications when I got the plans with the stamp. 3. Read the construction contract carefully. It certainly protects REMODELCO. Since we decided not to complete the project, we didn't pursue negotiating any aspects of it, so don't know if there is flexibility there. Cons: 1. We were not able to bring the project in at the original budget quoted during the free estimate. Growth was about 20%. We might be responsible for some of that due to choices, yet if that's the case the original estimate must have been based upon very inexpensive materials... 2. There is not good pricing transparency. You get a bottom line number. We rescoped twice and so had three bottom lines. It would have been MUCH more helpful to know the cost differences for each choice (e.g. wood windows vice aluminum clad windows cost $xxx, etc).
Description of Work: This report is for the design service only. We decided not to proceed with the project (see below). REMODELCO has a good approach to design and costing. By paying a fee for the design and detailed cost estimate, you are protected from cancelling an actual construction project if both parts are bundled. We paid for a design (by a house designer, vice architect) for a 14 x 24 room addition which would become our new kitchen, some minor demolition in the old kitchen, new flooring in the old kitchen and family room, and extension of our screened porch....an amibitious project.

I called The Remodelling Company to get an estimate for remodelling a bathroom. I was given an appointment for a few days later. The next day I was called and told that person scheduled was unavailable at that time, so we rescheduled for the following day. On the next day, the person scheduled failed to show up at my home at the scheduled time. I waited an hour and then called the company. I was told that the appointment was put on the main schedule, but no one ever notified the sales rep so that he could put the appointment on his personal schedule, so he was unaware of the appointment. The appointment was rescheduled for the next day, Saturday 10/16/10 at 2 p.m., and I was told that the sales rep would definitely be notified this time. On Saturday, again no one showed up at my home. I called the company after waiting until 2:30 and was told that the on-call person would be notified and get back to me. I called again at 3 p.m. and was told the same thing. No one called me that day to give any kind of explanation. Early the next week a message was left on my telephone answering machine from The Remodelling Company saying that I could call them if I was still interested in obtaining an estimate. The message contained no apology and no explanation for their unprofessional behavior. I have crossed them off my list and did not return their call.
Description of Work: I wanted to have a bathroom remodelled, but gave up on The Remodelling Company after difficulty scheduling an appointment, and two appointments that were not kept.

They were a little bit more expensive than the other two companies that I had contacted. They did everything that we had asked of them. They had given us suggestions on designs and were kind of rigid in what they provided. They were professional and good folks. They were really specialized in geothermal design. They had a very good reputation and had lots of good local people who would work with them. They were very good, but weren't willing to come down on the price. The most thorough inspection of the house was conducted by them. We didn't go with them only because of the price.

After damage from Hurricane Isabel, we had to gut the entire downstairs of our home. We did the sheetrock installation ourselves but needed a professional to recreate the damaged moldings. Pete and his team set up a woodworking shop in our living room and custom-milled the woodwork to exactly match what we had before. Our house is over 75 years old so the woodwork was very elaborate and required as many as 10-15 pieces per doorway or window. In addition, they were able to create custom pieces that filled in the gaps around our stairway molding where the new sheetrock replaced the original plaster and lath. The final result is absolutely beautiful. Whether your home is as old as ours or relatively new, I would recommend The Remodeling Company for all your needs.
