Absolutely under no circumstances use Adams Flooring. Shalenday, their office manager, is truly delightful and bends over backwards to support the customer. However, she cannot overcome the inflexibility and lack of concern of their owner, Doug, who refuses to communicate via cell phone and is unwilling to work with the customer on schedules and timing. At the end of the day, I lost $900 for temporary lodging for my family to be out of the house for the job, and had to cancel the contract. Use someone else who is willing to communicate about scheduling problems, and who has at least an ounce of concern for his clients. Stay away from Adams Flooring - it could NOT have been a worse experience. I will now be selling my house without the floors being done because the other contractors are already booked through the end of the year.

Horrible work. After completion of work the floors scratch extremely easy. The stairs do not match and are very blotchy. I have located multiple places where the old stain was never sanded. I paid for the scotia on the stairs to be redone and paid for the service but they have never returned to complete. I have reached out multiple times with 0 responses. Save yourself time and stress. GO A DIFFERENT ROUTE!!

The flooring was installed, but the window sills and trim around the floors were damaged from the install, stain marks were left on the walls, dust from cutting the flooring inside the home was left all over the home, our air conditioner unit was set to 64 degrees, and it was hard to get in touch with anyone to come out and fix subsequent buckling and cupping of our floors. We were told we had to pay for time and materials to replace the under-flooring of our living room, and when I arrived unexpectedly, the two Adam's Flooring employees were on my back dock fishing when my floors still hadn't been finished. I now need them to come back to fix a cupping issue and have been blown off and I am continuously calling and emailing to get updates after they give me a time to be there and then they don't show up, or they send me a message after the expected arrival date/time has passed. Our spiral staircase was missing two mounting bolts after they removed them to floor under the mount. Shoddy customer service. Imagine, I had to bug them to obtain their business; that should have been a sign not to use this company.

He seemed to be knowledgeable. He gave us information about the products that he used and why he suggested some of the different products he uses. I have gotten a bunch of other good reviews from other places, so I felt comfortable using them. I think it is a little expensive, but I hear that their services are good. As long as the service is good, but I don't know that right now.

Doug Adams, owner, was very helpful with the initial consultation. During our 1st meeting, he spent time explaining everything to us, inquiring as to our preferences, and offered suggestions as to how to make corrections to uneven parts of the floor and staircase. He went under the house to the crawlspace to inspect the humidity and subflooring. Doug and his crew were extremely hard working, completing the job in a couple of weeks, which included installation and staining of new stairs. Doug would also send text/photo updates to show progress. They were always very neat and clean as they worked, protecting the floors at all times. Overall, we are very satisfied with the end result and service we received from Adams Hardwood Flooring. Our floors look great and definitely improves the look of the entire house! We intend to finish off another part of the house later on and will definitely use Adams Hardwood Flooring to complete the work.

They were really really good. The owner came out to the house and helped us pick the color and then he was very helpful making sure that everything was done really really well. So, he was really good. On top of that, we were not here when they were here. When we walked in the house, everything was just right where it should have been. On top of that, while he was doing the work, he sent us pictures of the progress.

The service I received was outstanding. Doug and his employees were very conscious about ensuring that the installation was perfect. They arrived early and left late to work on this installation. Professionalism was tip-top. He gave me an excellent price for materials. A much better price than a couple of local floor and tile guys.

Love the final look! We had existing hardwood that Doug tied into. Looks really nice and we love the looks of the stairs as well. Very professional. At the end of each work day, the tools used were put away neatly, contained in one area. My husband and I both were very comfortable having Doug and Brad in our home.

I was impressed by the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and professionalism demonstrated by Doug and his crew. He was upfront about the cost, possible limitations of the work (getting out sun faded spots), and timeline. He was incredible knowledgeable about his craft and was open about talking about any concerns. The hardwood turned out beautiful with the water based finish he recommended. He was nice enough to call a prior client to show how the color would look. ?We will be refinishing our second floor hardwood and I will not hesitate to call Doug again for our flooring needs. Highly recommended.

The house was built about 1967 and the hardwood floor had never been refinished previously so they were in pretty bad shape with some discoloration. Doug recommended a stain that would make them look good, particularly with the color scheme, i.e., white walls and brown doors throughout. After coming by to measure and then providing the detailed estimate, we stayed in touch to set up the timing for the work to be done. The crew arrived right on time after lunch on a Thursday. By the time they quit that day, most of the sanding had been completed. They came by Friday morning to finish the detailed sanding and buffing and then applied the stain followed later by the shellac. By Monday, they had applied all of the finish and replaced the molding. Result was a floor that looks very good - not quite like new but pretty close and a whole lot better than it looked before the work. It was also great that Doug and the other guys were all enthusiastic and clearly wanted to make sure I was happy with the work. For example, Doug did test sections to show me what the floor would look like with and without the stain so I can make an educated decision on which to do. Not only did they do good work, but they finished on time and worked with my schedule. My only issue is that I have another house that needs the same kind of work but is located 300 miles away in South Carolina. I wish they could do it as well!
Description of Work: The folks from Adams Hardware Flooring sanded the hardware floors throughout our Williamsburg, VA house and then stained it a darker color. Then they applied three finish including one coat of shellac and then two coats of polyurethane. They also replaced the molding around all of the rooms so that would also match and look good.

Mr. Adams was one of three providers interviewed for the work required. His estimate and scope of work needed was mid-ranged and he offered the best hardwood restoration without major construction required by other providers. Mr. Adams is an on-site manager and laborer with his team. His team worked within his quoted schedule on time. At the start of the project, Mr. Adams offered three stain options to cover the stains in the floor. With my friends offering suggestions, he convinced me of the best option. When the work was completed the new stain was amazing, crisp and modern! They removed carpet, tack strips, filled holes, replaced unsalvageable hardwood flooring, sanded, stained and sealed. All debris was removed from site. An amazing restoration!!! Following hardwood floor restoration, I requested a quote from Mr. Adams to lay porcelain tile in a den. His price was more than fair and he included an attached utility room in his price. It was his idea. First, he needed to remove carpeting and tack strips. Not only did he order and pick up the preselected porcelain tile, but he installed it himself. There were two complications which held the work up. My carpenter was still working in the den and the tile was delayed in shipping. Mr. Adams also had the daunting task to remove a solid concrete step attacked to the concrete floor. That said, he managed to moderate his schedule to finish the job before my move date. In this task Mr. Adams and his team removed carpet materials, debris from site. Then Mr. Adams personally did the underpayment, set and grouted the tile, removed the concrete step. The floor pattern made the rooms look larger and was precise. Again an incredible result!!!

Doug Adams and his team did a fabulous job. We were particularly impressed with how well they were able to match our existing hardwood floors. In the photo I've uploaded, the downstairs landing and floors are original to the house; Adams Flooring stained and finished the stair treads. You'll notice I only gave them a "B" for price. That is because, while I certainly feel we got our money's worth, I don't feel entirely able to compare. Most of the pricing information I obtained from the internet: I was only able to get one other actual quote and it was not very detailed. While I made several other contacts, Doug was the only contractor who took the time to talk with me about our needs and show me what our flooring options were. Doug and his staff were friendly and they got the job done on time and on budget (except for a $52 upcharge for stain which we were told might be necessary in advance). They even repaired a split board on my existing hardwood floor. When I mentioned to Doug that one of our doors was sticking on a new threshold that had been installed, Doug popped by a few days later to shave the door down for us. We couldn't be happier with the quality of the work or the service.
Description of Work: Replaced carpeted stairs (13), upstairs landing and hall with hardwood. This included removal and disposal of carpet, supplying and installing unfinished red oak hardwood flooring in the landing/hall, unfinished oak stair treads and primed risers. Existing handrail needed to be removed and reinstalled. Stain & clear coat to match existing hardwood floor downstairs. Transitions to carpeted rooms as required. (We completed the job ourselves by painting the risers.)

We used Angie's list to select Adams Hardwood Flooring and reviewed the company's website. Unfortunately, that was all of the research we did. I had seen a few concerning reviews on Angie?s list, but most were good, so I discounted the bad reviews. I also put far too much weight on the Adams Hardwood Flooring website. My wife and I really like Doug Adams, he is very personable and we want the best for and from him. However, the work quality was quite disappointing and, quite frankly, poor (not only our opinion). Others with limited flooring experience as well as numerous skilled contracting professionals have questioned the finished product they've seen firsthand at our home. They actually want to know who did the work so that they are sure that they do not use the same contractor. The workmanship is considerably different that what is represented on the Adams Hardwood Flooring website. As a business owner, Doug has to improve the quality of his work and his decision making. There were numerous poor decisions made by Doug. Some of the poor decisions: (1) Poor decision by Doug to go ahead and completely install obviously improperly milled flooring (very inconsistent widths) across the entire master bedroom when issues were brought to his attention by his own staff after only a few feet of flooring width had been installed. He also made a poor decision not to bring the issue to my wife?s attention even though she was home at the time. Ultimately upon our insistence, a representative from the flooring supplier came out and, upon seeing the enormous gaps in the flooring, gave approval to tear up and replace the entire master bedroom floor. Doug had previously pressed us to just move forward with what we had and suggested in an e-mail to me that we fill the numerous and significant gaps with putty, ?I think that if we take the main eye swore up by the bedroom door and fill the rest it will look great when we sand and finish.? The recommendation was completely inconsistent with what is represented on the company?s website. (2) Poor decisions to face nail both in the hallway and in the master bedroom in high traffic areas (not just in limited space areas next to walls) which has created numerous problems. (3) Poor decision on the color of the putty used to fill holes in the face nailing which did not match the cumaru wood. Doug came back to replace it and now there is a different sheen to the flooring in each of the places he tried to fix it (shiny striped areas). That same putty fills many other gaps in the floor and is very obvious- it has also dried out and has deteriorated in numerous places. We have lots of gaps that are 1/32? ? 1/16? throughout the new flooring. There are more boards with gaps than there are tight fitting. (4) Doug touted the Loba Hybrid water based product as being better than traditional oil based finish and I trusted him. It certainly did not work well with the darker cumaru flooring. Almost anything marks/scuffs the floor, our vacuum cleaner wheels scuff the floor. We also have edges of side-by-side boards that are not the same height. We catch our sock feet on the edges of the boards. (5) Unbelievably poor decision to install a board with a 6 ¾? split in the end of it right in the middle of the master bedroom floor - he filled the split with putty! (6) While Doug?s intent to align the boards in the master bedroom with the hallway was good, the method utilized was poor judgment. Rather than sacrificing some of the boards to align the flooring in the master bedroom with the hallway, he face nailed them and left them installed. He should have nailed boards aligning with the hall, worked his way from those to the wall and then pulled up and discarded the first boards he face nailed. The flooring would have been aligned and no boards would have had to have been face nailed. That decision has created significant 1/8? gaps (you can see the plywood sub-floor) and caused the putty/shiny stripe issues. (7) Also, other contractors have questioned why he did not just extend the flooring from the hallway into the bedroom instead of installing a threshold in the doorway of the bedroom. The result would have flowed better and probably looked better. (8) Doug?s extremely poor decision not to address these issues has led to us finally taking the time to put this review online. We have been trying to get the current issues addressed since late last June. We consider his lack of responsiveness very unprofessional. Doug gave us a warranty, but it is obviously of little value since we cannot get him to come back. I am seriously considering just paying to have someone else fix the work as best as possible. Even with the oak floors downstairs he refinished, we can see swirls in some places and there are a few areas that are not so smooth. We also have the issue with raised edges of boards that catch our sock feet. A very nice guy, but we are not at all pleased with the quality of his work or his lack of responsiveness. Too bad we cannot attach photos, those would tell the story/you could see for yourself. Price is a "D" because of the quality of the work and it is looking more and more as if I will have to pay someone else to fix what can be fixed. Quality is an "F" for the reasons stated above Responsiveness is an "F" for the reasons stated above (I called Doug again early today, no return phone call) Punctuality is a "B"; when he says he will show, he typically does, but has been late. Professionalism is a tough one. Very nice, very personable. However, not responding to e-mails and voice mail messages is unacceptable. Should probably rate as a "D" or "F", but generously giving him a "C" just because we do like Doug.

Response from Adams Hardwood Flooring
Dear Reader, I am sorry for the bad review. From my perspective I think you should take away that we completely replaced the floor in the master bedroom. Also providing a deep discount for the inconvenience. I feel terrible that the homeowner was not happy with our services and really tried hard to satisfy his concerns. I think that some of the gapping in floor boards is seasonal and due to dry winter months. Thanks for reading and please don't hesitate to contact us. We really do strive to maintain the values that define a handshake as a legal agreement and embody are business slogan, The Name You Can Stand On.

Doug is a consummate professional. He is friendly, helpful and has competitive prices. He took the carpet out of the rooms and carried them into my attic. He was able to start the work exactly on time and he finished earlier than I expected. the results were outstanding. He able to match the existing hardwood floors and ensure a seamless flow with existing hardwood floors. You would not know the installation is new it matches existing so well. Doug left the place immaculate - no dust or residue present anywhere after sanding the floors several times between finish coats. Doug is not the easiest guy to get a hold of, but just be persistent. He delivered as he promised. I like utilizing independent small business people that take pride in their work and who work for themselves. Highly recommended he is worth pursuing - and a heck of a nice guy to boot.

The job went well. Doug gave us name of mover to move all the furniture ( including an 800 lb. piece) out and then back into room. His co. removed carpeting in a day and finished installing the wood in 2 days including a beautiful treshold into master bedroom and trim around fireplace. Though we were held up by Easter, the next Tuesday and Wed. Doug sanded and stained and put 3 coats on. He was especially careful and helpful in choosing color to match other floors from entry and kitchen. He tried about 4 before both he and I were satisfied. Both my husband and I are very pleased with end result.

Before contracting with Mr. Adams to install engineered hardwood, I did a good amount of research on materials and vendors. I also obtained bids from three other contractors. It was important to me, due to the amount of money we were investing in the house, that we have a quality installer and quality hardwood. Mr. Adams was able to give a good recommendation on how to install the product as well as the type of product we should use. There are several ways to lay hardwood, gluing and floating, and he was able to give us the pros and cons. The job was done in a timely manner, the floors are beautiful and we would highly recommend his firm.

Mr. Adams arrived at the scheduled time to remove the damaged floor boards. This was accomplished without problems and all damaged flooring was removed. The sub floor was tested for moisture and since the reading was borderline, a fan was set up to run overnight to ensure the sub floor was dry before continuing. This eventuality had been discussed beforehand. The next day Mr Adams and a co-worker arrived as scheduled. The sub floor was tested again and was satisfactory. The new flooring was installed, sanded, stained and finished with polyurethane. The sanding equipment had an excellent vacuum system so very little dust was produced. The finish stain essentially matched the original 22 year old finish on the kitchen floor. All trim pieces were expertly reinstalled. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they had installed a 6 ft piece of trim that had been missing from the island since original construction. I had not asked that this be replaced and was done on their own volition to ensure a quality job. The onsite review was accomplished within a day of my initial call and an estimate was provided a day or two later. I was told that it would take about 5 weeks to schedule the job which I understood. However, I felt the responsiveness to phone calls and emails in the interim to determine exactly when the work would be scheduled was a little slow and is the reason for the lower responsiveness rating. Overall, Adams Flooring provided an excellent product and I would recommend them without reservation. They were courteous and respectful of the homeowner's house and possessions at all times.

Owner Doug (AKA Leon) and his assistant Josiah were excellent in every way....professional, timely, very skilled - my husband is very OC, and could not find a single thing to complain about. Doug is a perfectionist in every detail, was able to configure transitions to fit every threshold (six of them), artistically chose and arranged flooring, beautifully installed flooring up to and under counters, cabinets, dishwasher, trash compactor, etc. In addition, worked long hours when needed, and was consistently pleasant and polite - to us and to his employee, Josiah (could hear him praising him as they worked)......it's such a pleasure to see a team work so well together - especially when they're working in your space for a week. We were so impressed with his work, his work ethic, and his price, that we actually felt compelled to pay him more than we had agreed upon.

Arrived on time, called first, which is always appreciated. Clean, well dressed, professional, and friendly. Discussed at length all that was to be done. Leon and Jos moved all furniture with the utmost care. Closed off the area and got right to work. Day by day all the work started on time and went better then I could have hoped for. I was offered stain and finish choices. The work is pefect. The floors cam out better then new. I used this company 2 years ago and they installed slate floors in my family room. That job was perfect too, and has stood the test of time. When the job was done everything was returned to it proper place. I could not have wanted more. Thanks, Leon
