Very well! They were very responsive and offered to send a person out the same day but due to the amount of work thought it might be better to start it first thing the next morning. The gentleman they sent was very professional and did an excellent job of installing the new door.

Your comments concerned us and we appreciate you drawing attention to our reviews. Of our many current reviews, only 6 reviewers us D or F. Of those 6, only TWO actually used our services. That means of our actual clients, over 99% have NOT given us a poor rating, which is an incredibly high satisfaction rate for a contractor. We're proud of that outstanding record, as it demonstrates our commitment to our clients and our excellent service, and we plan to share it with our staff at our next meeting! We're sorry to hear that you feel we deserve an F rating, as our goal is to provide outstanding service to our friends and neighbors in the Richmond area. You are welcome to email us and provide any additional feedback you may have, as we use such feedback to improve. We will continue to strive to exceed our clients' expectations in every way.
Upon my initial call, the company informed me that they do not do initial estimates, so they would not come in advance to see the height of the gutters & woodpecker holes. I informed them they needed a tall ladder to complete the job, and they assured me this wouldn't be a problem based on the fact that my home was only 2 stories tall. I was charged the $94 fee for the technician to come to my house, and upon arriving at my house and inspecting the work, the technician did in fact need a taller ladder than what he was unprepared with. He told me that it would be an additional $200 (on top of the $800 I was already expecting to pay) to rent a taller ladder and send a second technician (as a spotter). So my options were to cancel the job and pay the $94 service charge, or pay the additional $200 to finish a job they were unprepared to complete. I called customer service while the technician was at my house to see if they could negotiate the $200 charge or offer a discount since they made the mistake of misinforming me. Customer service apologized for the oversight, but the company was unyielding and unwilling to right the wrong, in any way, shape or form. The CEO took the time to email me to apologize for the inconvenience and provide rationale, but this of course did not alleviate the pain of the inconvenience or fix the problem. In the end I refused to pay the $200 out of principle, and the company did not don't complete all services requested. On the plus side, the technician was nice & friendly and showed professionalism through the challenging situation. He also did a nice job on the portion of work that he completed. This situation was not his fault. Overall, if your job is small and simple, I'm sure Mr. Handyman is a good company to do the work. For bigger, more expensive jobs, I would recommend seeking a business that offers estimates and has better customer service (if something goes wrong with an expensive job), so you don't have to spend additional unexpected $ or waste your time.
We are glad to hear that our friendly staff and the work we did were appreciated. We have a great team and we pride ourselves in our professionalism and high quality standards! We have been serving our Richmond neighbors since 2001. Mr. Handyman works on a time and materials basis with just a one hour service minimum for most areas. Our clients appreciate that they can have work done on the FIRST visit instead of being required to arrange an appointment to meet a salesperson, and then later having to arrange a second appointment (typically weeks later) to have the work done by someone they haven’t met. This particular homeowner had a list of things needing to be done on the house she was selling. The technician provided her with an estimated cost and then got right to work. Very convenient! The only task we did not complete that day was one that required rental of specialty equipment due to extreme height, and for safety reasons, a second technician. The estimated cost was $200 and we provided that information to the homeowner. The charge would have been the same if we knew about the height situation and picked up the equipment prior to arriving. Though we would have been able to complete the job that same day, the homeowner declined to have this one task done. She thought this work should be done for free. Our understanding is that her expectation was based on us not somehow knowing the exact height of her repair prior to arriving at her home, and therefore not knowing that specialty equipment and additional labor might be required. We did not think the request for free service was reasonable and are sorry that the homeowner views that decision as poor customer service. If one went to the dentist for a cleaning and found out a cavity needed to be filled, one wouldn’t expect the dentist to do that work for free. Likewise, just because the repair was more involved than the client had anticipated, it is not reasonable to expect free service. While we do have basic tools on our vans, this job needed cumbersome specialty equipment that is not something our technicians can carry around. We also will never sacrifice the safety of our staff or our clients. We regret that we were not able to accommodate this homeowner’s request for free service, but we wish her the best in her new state!

We were very satisfied - Carl, the tech, came EXACTLY (seriously) on time - at 8:00am (he was scheduled to arrive between 8:00am - 8:30am); he knocked on the door, and as our doggy barked & warned us of 'an intruder', I looked at the clock & watched it tick to 8:01am......... Amazing ! He kindly introduced himself & asked to confirm what we wished to have completed; he then immediately began working non-stop until approximately 3 hours later, he completed the tasks & showed us what he did. We were very pleased with the work he did - everything looked great & he left no mess or anything ! We thanked him & told him we would definitely use Mr. Handyman in the near future, as we have an outside spigot that is loose and needs to be reinforced - he said, yep, can be done easily in about an hour... So - we shall soon call Mr. Handyman again !!!
Description of Work: We needed an aluminum porch railing repair, masonry repair, a new dryer vent installed, and an aluminum strip above the garage door sanded, primed, and painted due to peeling paint from an earlier improper paint job (that was done by a different company, Main Street Homes - a story for another time!).

To begin with, I had called other companies to get an idea of the cost and time frame to expect. The best offer I got was for a month off and just slightly less expensive, so when I called Mr. Handyman and found out that they could send a technician the SAME day for just a few dollars more than the other two companies I was thrilled!!! The woman who answered the call was very cheerful, and explained the breakdown of the costs and the was we could use their service. Being charged by the hour allowed us the option of making a list of the things we needed done and we were told that if we had a long list, that the technician could stay as long as we needed! I was very impressed! I had never heard of such an option before! The companies I've used in the past charged by the hour and were available to come for whichever jobs I stated I needed on the phone only. I had never been offered an option to keep the technician for as long as I needed! WOW! JUST WOW!!! Karl, the technician arrived and was just as wonderful as the young lady who answered the phone. He was a cheerful, knowledgeable, well informed, efficient, and very professional worker; and, (best of all), cleaned up what little mess he made on his own, (that is to say, he vacuumed the dust and dirt from the area he was working in as well as wiping up any little spots that needed to be wiped. This was a first for me! Usually, whenever someone has been out to work on my home, the mess was left for me! One wouldn't know that work had been done on our home at all! Karl's work was excellent. I feel that he did a very good job and that I will never have problems with the door or the linoleum again., When all is said and done, I now know that Mr. Handyman of Richmond is the best handyman service I could hope to use and I will be returning to them from now on whenever I need the help of a handyman. I will be recommending Mr. Handyman of Richmond to my family, friends and neighbors from now on! Thank you so much, all of you, for making what had been an unpleasant start of my day into a good day!
Description of Work: Our front door was stuck from swelling caused by age, heat and humidity and we couldn't open the door. Karl fixed the door jamb so that it was as good as new and while he was here, repaired a spot on the linoleum by the front door which was curling upwards due to the poor job that was originally done by the people who installed it.

I spoke with a phone person who told me that it is around $200 for a person to come out and then $95 dollars per hour to do the first work. Then they would have to return after the dry wall compound drys at another ~$200 for the first hour and $95 dollars there after to recoat the dry wall, leave and then come back a last time for ~$200 per hour and $95 dollars per hour to put a final coat or skim coat because dry wall needs three coats. This means it is now a 600 dollar job for a 6 in crack on the wall at minimum if they only spend 1 hr working each time. It only cost me $300 to replace 1/3 of my closet ceiling from a hole where water damage was through another company. I will not be using them.
Description of Work: I asked for a price quote to have 2 cracks repaired in dry wall.

Response from Mr Handyman of Richmond
The numbers you are quoting are not accurate. Perhaps you have us confused with another company? Mr. Handyman is a small, family-run business serving Richmond since 2001. Our minimum one hour service charge is far less than you are quoting and only a fraction of most contractors' minimum charge. We do not impose our minimum charge for follow up visits for applications of drywall mud, which are often 15-20 minute services and therefore relatively inexpensive. (Doing the job properly DOES require multiple application, drying, sanding cycles, and we assume our clients want the work done properly, because that's the only way we will do it.) Please feel free to give us a call at 804-270-7272 and we would be happy to discuss your needs further. We welcome the opportunity to wow you with our high levels of service and professionalism, because it looks like you have confused us with someone else.

I called Mr. Handyman in RVA on the 9th of February to have my gate replaced. They were able to provide the services on the 10th or 11th which was terrific because I had a tenant with a dog that needed to be contained, and my deadline was February 15th. I was able to go by the property and verify that the work was done, prior to their occupancy. This was important to me. The house was vacant so I never met the service man. The gate he built looks sturdy, and he utilized powder coated hinges and latch, per my request. Time will tell if the install was sturdy, but I don't see any problems. I received a call to give me an estimate on the cost of the job and to outline what would be done, per their estimator. I received a call to let me know they had scheduled the service Another call to let me know the service person was on his way Another call to ask me if I was pleased with their services and their communications. Everything has worked seamlessly and efficiently. IT seems to be a well-run company. My only complaint is with the cost of the service. To be sure, I was not charged more than I was quoted, and I was under a time crunch, and their estimator may have known that, and estimated accordingly. But really, $814 to build a wooden gate? $147.90 was materials, and on top of that, another $20 for 'Van Stock' which was detailed as 'exterior screws' !! Screws !! Part of this dissatisfaction is my problem, because my husband and I are both 'handy' and we can do this sort of work, and know what is required, both in skill and time. I WOULD use this company again, but only in similar circumstances where I was definitely up against a deadline. They do good work, but they are expensive. One final comment, is that Mr. Handyman aggressively 'coupons' and 'discounts' in other areas of Virginia. Not so in Richmond. I guess it's an indicator of the market, and how hard it is to find reliable help in our booming construction economy.

Response from Mr Handyman of Richmond
We are so happy to hear that you were impressed with our professionalism, communication, punctuality, reliability and quality of work! Mr. Handyman has been serving the Richmond area since 2001 and has won numerous awards. Mr. Handyman of Richmond only hires highly skilled, very experienced professionals. These are craftsmen who know what they are doing and have passed our random drug testing and background checks. These multi-skilled craftsmen are in high demand and it is not easy to find them. In order to obtain them as our full-time employees, we must pay them a fair wage. That wage is reflected in our rates, which are very competitive and actually UNDER the national average for handymen. We DO offer discounts on occasion, but as our busy clients prefer not to play “the coupon game,” we choose to leave our rates at a reasonable level, instead of artificially inflating those rates to make up for a coupon. Clients receive special offers from us several times a year. You will be happy to hear that your time crunch did not at all impact the cost of your job. That would be dishonest and unethical and that is NOT how Mr. Handyman is run. Doing so would be taking advantage of a client and just plain wrong. The only reason a short time frame would impact a job cost is if the work needed to be done during overnight hours. We wish our suppliers would sell us only the exact amount of hardware needed for a job, but alas, they do not. We typically have to buy a box, priced between $10-$20. Other van stock would include things like sandpaper, trash bags, wood filler, disposable plastic drop clothes, WD-40, etc. These items are what constitute van stock charges. If you bought the items yourself, it would have definitely cost you even more. There are plenty of unethical companies out there, ones who are paying employees off the books, or taking advantage of those who aren’t legally allowed to work in the U.S., or employing people who you wouldn’t actually want in your home, or working without proper license or insurance, or not paying taxes. That is how unethical companies can charge cheap rates. We are NOT one of those shady companies. Our clients appreciate that about us because they know that you get what you pay for and value our commitment to service and quality. We look forward to assisting you with your maintenance, repair and improvement needs in the future!

An excellent experience! I called on Tuesday and was put on wait list for Wednesday afternoon. They called me late Wednesday morning and said the technician would at my home in an hour. Paul, the technician, arrived on time and had me review my list which had doubled overnight. He went right to work and fixed them all. He did a fine job on each task, and took pride in his work. I would certainly use them again. TIP: Make sure your list of all tasks is ready when the technician arrives and that you have necessary parts available. It saves you time and money.
Description of Work: He trimmed two sticky doors and shimmed a third one. He replaced a light fixture and secured the railings on two stairwells. He re-installed a trash can holder in a kitchen cabinet, and adjusted the dishwasher so it was properly positioned in the cabinet.
