They are pretty good on the task. But they charged many hours. If we knew a good carpenter, we would not use Mr. Handyman's service.

Garry arrived on time, ready to install a bathroom mirror. He identified himself proving his company ID. Handyman does charge a trip fee. The estimated cost is reviewed with you when you call for an appointment.
Description of Work: Hanging a mirror in a bathroom. Great service to complete many other things around the house. Once the technician Garry finished, he gave me a folder to identify all the companies services.

I am so pleased with Mr. Handyman of Richmond. They responded quickly to my message, we set an appointment by phone, and all went well. The serviceman evaluated the doors, brought the needed materials, and installed them professionally. Now our doors close more securely and I see no light coming in below or on the sides. And the value received was outstanding. I would definitely hire them again and highly recommend them to others. Thank you, Mr. Handyman of Richmond.

The repair man was VERY slow which added up to a lot of expense to the job when paying by the hour. He successfully installed my front door but not the Dead Bolt or Entry Door Knob. The screws were left loose, which I tightened myself later. He came returned a second day to complete the job but it had rained all weekend at that time so he was unable to do the exterior painting (which would mean another return trip) with an additional "Trip Charge" when I had already paid for 2 trips. He put another coat of dry wall compound on the ceilings, which needed another day to dry, before the ceilings could be painted. I can now close by storm door but it does not shut with a tight seal so I feel air flowing in through the crack. The job was never completed at my request because I had already paid this company so much money I decided I could paint the ceiling and exterior around my front door for a lot less money than it would have cost me to have Mr Handyman do the job and pay for an additional trip. The "Trip Charge" is definitely a racket when the job turned in to multiple trips.
Description of Work: Dry wall repair from water damage to ceiling in 2 rooms. Painting the 2 ceilings after repair. Storm Door unable to close off kitchen. Main entryway Front door, door jamb and casing Instillation with exterior painting of the casing around the door.

Response from Mr Handyman of Richmond
We are so sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations! We do strive to perform the best quality work as efficiently as possible. The technician sent to your home is a highly skilled professional with 30 years experience. He arrived on time in a marked van and in uniform. Our technicians can have anywhere from one to six jobs a day and they spend time driving in between jobs, typically 15-45 minutes per job. Like most other home service companies, we do have a trip charge to cover the cost of getting to your home. The cost we incur to drive to your home includes the technician and dispatcher time, plus use of the van (cost, maintenance, gas, insurance.) Of course, we could choose to merge that cost into the hourly rate. Let's say we increased the hourly rate by $20 to make up for it. That would mean that a client with a one hour job would pay $20 for that time, whereas a client with a 6 hour job would pay $120 for that time. That would hardly be fair to our clients. We like to be fair and ethical, so we break it out as a separate charge. It is clearly not a "racket" but rather represents the cost of getting to your home. We regret that we cannot teleport to our clients' homes because that would be far more efficient and fun. We really wish scientists could figure that out or that someone would bless us with that superpower. You also have an understanding of drywall work, which is great! After installing and taping the seams, drywall does require multiple cycles of mudding, drying and sanding before being ready for priming and painting. That does require multiple visits, but is a sad fact of drywall installation expense. Paneling is really your only option if you want to avoid drywall finishing. Here's a link to our article about drywall: https://www.mrhandyman.com/blog/2017/october/taped-mudded-what-does-it-mean-/ And yes, painting right before or after rain is a bad idea. Aren't you glad we didn't do it? Your results would not have been good if we painted wet wood. We only want our clients to have good results. We are happy to hear that our technician was successful in getting your storm door to close, as not being able to do so must have been very irritating. If you are feeling air flow around the door, you either need weather stripping, a new door, or modifications to the opening, which is probably not perfectly rectangular.

Outstanding. I asked for and got Karl as my 'handyman.' I had used him before (1-2 years ago) and he was excellent then and was (again) today! Karl is the best...on time, courteous and professional. He works steadily and effectively (so as to get it right the first time), while wasting no time. Money well spent, especially since he was able to repair two (2) plumbing issues I had (which I thought I might need to hire a plumber to fix).
Description of Work: Replaced rear motion-detector spotlight; sanded+painted+installed new hinges/latch on outside crawl-space door; replaced one (1) piece of vinyl siding that had fallen off; repaired kitchen sink faucet that had seized in-place (would not pivot left-right); repaired shower control lever that had become loose; repaired latches on three (3) attic/3rd floor crawl-space doors that would not latch.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Our technicians can get a lot done in a short time. And they are multi-skilled as you experienced, able to handle carpentry, light plumbing and electric, siding, odd jobs and so much more. We save our clients money because we can often do on one visit what it would have taken 4-5 visits from other companies to accomplish.

I am satisfied with them, but they are a little higher priced, but their technicians are knowledgeable.I wouldn't use them again because of price, I found someone comparable, but they have their advantages. But, price isn't the only thing, I think with them because they have a staffed office, you knew you could reach someone and schedule something rather than calling and individual and hoping that individual would call you back. They are a little more expensive, at least you know when you call them someone would pick up the phone and give you a service window right off the bat.

I do not do this often but I have to tell of my horrible experience with this company. I hired them to finish drywall and put up trim and baseboard in a 12x15 Florida room. When I scheduled the appointment I explained everything I wanted done and they quoted me 2 days work, 3-4 hours day one and 1-2 hours day two just to finish mud on wall since it would have to dry from day one. At there rate of $94/hr I assumed max 6 hours and the $45 trip charge total $650 or so. The night before they said they were sending 2 people to help the job go faster. So when the workers arrived on time to start I explained the job to them and they started work. I signed a blank contract with only the trip charge $45 on it, never do this with this company. I was never told how long the workers thought it would take once I explained job to them so I assumed the 6 hours quoted would be enough time. I also told them since I did not have all the trim there that day that I would have it there the morning of the second day. I was told by the supervising worker that they had to go shopping for 2 outside corners and could pick up the trim when they went for that so I agreed. My second mistake you should not make. It took both employees at $94/hour x2 to do the shopping and I am guessing cost me 3 hours or $300 for a trip to Lowe's. Always have what they need or be prepared to ask them what else they need and go get it yourself will save you a lot of money. So the next contact I received was at 10am and I figured they were done with day one since they sent two people instead of one and were calling to get payment, to my surprise and disgust they said that they would need the whole day 8 hours times 2 employees 16 hours and $1600-1700. I tell them that is not in my budget which was $650 total I was told. So I tell them to stop work and they do. But to my surprise in the 6+ work hours between the two workers all that was accomplished was a trip to Lowe's, set up, one layer of mud on 90% of the job, fixing a 6x8 inch section of drywall, and then them cleaning up there stuff but not cleaning mud off brand new doors and floor in room. So it cost me $700 for basically a layer of mud when I was expecting for $650 the whole job to be done. Seems to me like a bait and switch. We tried many times to communicate with the company to have charges reduced and they did do some discounting but in my eyes no where near enough for the work that was done. All they kept saying was what is your credit card number by phone and in emails reminding us over and over if not paid would send to collections and take to court when all we wanted was to discuss with supervisor before we paid, and finally got that 4 days later. The supervisor said that the quote I received was not in the notes of the conversation when I set the appointment so it must not have been quoted. So I asked for tape of the conversation and they said they do not record. In my opinion it is because they quote low and then charge higher once they are there. I will never do business with this company again and advise anyone to do the same unless you get a solid signed contract with everything on it before they begin work and don't pay them a dime more than that contract because I feel that will try and make job last longer.
Description of Work: Needed drywall that was already on wall mudded and trim and baseboard put around 3 sliding doors a set of French doors and a regular door.

Response from Mr Handyman of Richmond
Mr. Handyman is a locally-owned business, serving Richmond since 2001. We have completed nearly 50,000 jobs in the Richmond area, and you can see from our online reviews and numerous awards that we have many many satisfied clients. If the facts of this situation were accurately represented in this member's story, we would have been out of business a long time ago. When the member's husband called in, two full days were scheduled because they had extensive drywall repairs to finish (another contractor had walked out on the job for unknown reasons) and five doors to install trim around. The "max 6 hours" mentioned was the time for the drywall only, but the number must have erroneously stuck in the member's husband mind as the total. Regardless, we sent an email confirmation clearly spelling out our terms and indicating the two days scheduled, which should have prevented any confusion. On the day of the work, the member's husband left very quickly to go to work, leaving the technicians alone. We actually prefer clients to be home while work is being done, as they can then see how hard our technicians work. If the member or her husband had wanted any further clarification, we would have been happy to provide it. Nothing "sneaky" was going on with us, just honest people putting in an honest day's work. This is an extremely busy time of year for us, and we have plenty of work to do. We have no desire to drag anyone's job out, as that would be unethical and also just increase the waiting time for other clients, thereby reducing their satisfaction. It appeared to us that this job cancellation was due to a spousal disagreement about the repair budget. When our technicians were told to stop, they stopped the clock as soon as possible and quickly left as instructed. The technicians we had on-site are highly skilled and each have over 30 years of contracting experience. Being told to stop in the middle of a job is a highly unusual occurrence for us. It is very unfortunate because the result was that the client paid more for set-up and breakdown than for productive work time.

The service and cost were as represented. Depending on what you need done it may be expensive because they charge an appointment fee plus an hourly rate. It is probably pretty standard but not cheap for unspecialized work. One thing I was not entirely happy with: on the phone I told the appointment person that I needed the pipes capped. Perhaps I was not clear but after demolition the Mr Handyman rep told me I will need a licensed plumber to put the pipes in the wall. I thought the whole thing would get done in one appointment. Otherwise he was very resourceful, expeditious and took care of everything to my satisfaction.
