We had a technician come out to help hang about 10 paintings around the house and also to re-grout some bathroom tile. I was very happy with the work in the bathroom. Overall, the paintings were hung nicely. My problem stems from an issue with one of the paintings. Before the technician left, I checked over everything to make sure it looked good. I didn't see any problems, and he didn't alert me to any. About an hour after he left, I was in the guest room where he'd hung one of the paintings. I noticed that it had been hung sideways, that is horizontally instead of vertically. I took the painting off the wall to re-hang it vertically and imagine my surprise when I uncovered a large 3 in x 3 in hole in the wall (it looked as if he'd missed the nail and sent the hammer forcefully into the wall). I was very happy with how Mr. Handyman the company handled the situation - they sent him back to my house two or three days later to repair the hole. I am also understanding that things like this can happen. My problem is how the handman himself handled it - by trying to cover it up and not being honest about it from the get go. I would use Mr. Handyman again because, as I said, I was happy with the company's response. However, if I do use them again I will request a different technician.

Everything went very smoothly. Everyone I talked to on the phone was friendly and efficient. Karl did a great job with the cabinets. He was on time, polite, got everything done in an hour, and left everything looking good. I would recommend this company to anyone who asked.

It was very easy to schedule service. I have had the same handyman return a few times. He works quickly knowing that I'm paying $90/hour but he does excellent work. As much as I like to bargain shop, when it comes to service I think you get what you pay for.

They did pretty good job. I think the door needed to be cut down a little bit because it's started to rub against the wood and wear. It took him several hours for him to finish because I also had him do a few other things like clean my gutters. I would recommend him and use him again!

I have a very nice front door complete with carvings. The door is in three parts: The part you open, the glass door with wood frame in front of it and the side section of the door that is built into the house. Wesley from Mr. Handyman completed the job over the course of four separate days. This happened because Mr. Handyman had not counted on the job taking as long as it did and Wesley was scheduled to work elsewhere. He began by removing the glass from the wood frame and sanded it. I had unfortunately let the door go for too long, so the sanding required some work. I discovered that the bottom of the frame had a lot of wood rot. Wesley replaced the old wood at the bottom with ash, a wood that is far less likely to rot. He also coated it with something to protect it. He moved on to the front door and then the side section, sanding and staining everything. In addition, a little bit of the stain did not dry properly because it "bubbled," making it turn a sort of transparent white. He came back on the fourth day to correct that, spending around an hour and a half on the project, carefully scraping those sections with a razor. I was prepared to pay him for the fourth day, but he said that I owed him nothing because the bubbling was not my fault. If offered to pay him something anyway, but he declined my offer. The result is beautiful. I have an average house, but I told him the door looks like it belongs on an expensive house. I give Wesley highest recommendation. He's honest; he does a great job; he's there on time and he's pleasant.

I received an email confirmation from the provider the day before our scheduled appointment. The technician arrived promptly at the stated time and began to assess the damage and needed repairs. Once he began, he worked steadily for the next 11 hours stopping only for lunch and to purchase supplies. Overall, I am very pleased with the job. The technician worked carefully and treated my home like his own. He provided an explanation of the work that was done as well as the cost of the job. He was polite and professional. I will be a repeat customer and would recommend the company to others.
Description of Work: The technician replaced the subfloor in my bathroom and installed new flooring.

He did a great job. The most difficult problem was getting water away from the foundation of the house under our deck. He rigged up a system that does the job without creating a rut where the water drains. We were very happy with his work.
Description of Work: He fixed a faucet, repaired some wood rot on a second floor window and took care of a drainage problem under our deck.

The technician was on time and professional. He did not successfully fix the ceiling fan noise problem which was later discovered to be caused by how the fan was mounted in the ceiling. He did a very nice job on the bookcase shelving. I had purchased wood for the shelving but had not purchased other materials as I wasn't sure what to get. He went to the store to get these items and then finished the job. My main complaint with this service is how purchased items are billed. The receipt is not provided to the customer and I was told there is a markup on items but not told what this amount was. I was billed $66.70 for materials which were listed as wood, nails, filler, and adhesive. Since I had purchased the wood for the shelves, the wood I was billed for was trim strips. I asked the technician how much the markup was and he said it was a percentage of the total cost. Not helpful. He didn't show me what he had purchased and didn't leave any left over nails, adhesive, etc. with me. In my opinion this is just wrong. If I'm buying the materials I own anything that I've paid for that isn't used. I received a service follow-up call and shared all of this with Katie in the main office. She was very nice and said she would look into it. She told me that the technician used all of the materials he had billed me for and that there was nothing left over. She also said that there's a mark up - but not what it is. This kind of thing makes me nuts, so I won't be using this company again. I'm o.k. with the hourly rate. I'm o.k. with the somewhat high trip charge. I'm not o.k. with someone going shopping on my dime and then being vague about what was purchased and how much it cost.
Description of Work: Balanced ceiling fan and re-secured it to the ceiling to reduce operation noise. Added 2 shelves to a small built-in bookcase that had only a top and bottom shelf. The previous owners had mounted a flat screen t.v. between the top and bottom shelves and I wanted to turn it back into a bookcase. The technician repaired damage to the top and bottom shelves (filled holes cut for wiring with wood putty) and installed 2 new shelves which are 4 ft long and 10 inches wide.

Our Operations Manager spoke with you about the materials after our technician left. Basically, our clients have the option to purchase materials from the store or from us. Either is fine! We definitely do provide a materials receipt. It’s part of our invoice. Just like every other contractor and many other businesses, we do charge a mark-up on anything we provide from our suppliers. However, we often get lower contractor rates which minimize the price difference, plus the mark-up allows us to warranty the materials. So, for example, if we provide a board for your deck, and six months later it warps, we will swap it at no charge for labor or materials. The other thing most consumers don't realize is that various fees a company has, from business taxes to liability insurance, are based on overall revenue, including materials. Therefore a company NOT marking up materials would be losing money on every single material they provided, and would quickly be out of business. Our technicians are supposed to ask the client whether or not they want the leftover materials. Some clients want the leftover caulk, drywall bits, and lumber scraps while the majority say "Heck no! Get it out of here." We've reminded that technician to be sure to ask! Thanks for letting us know.

Mr. Handyman was professional and friendly during our initial conversation. I wasn't able to receive an estimate based on the work that needed to be done but she did tell me that she spoke with a contractor who told her that the job would take a couple hours. Initially they weren't able to set an appointment, they just called and gave us a 30 min to few hour notice that a contractor would be available. This was slightly inconvenient for us due to our busy schedules but eventually they were able to give us a set date and time that we could expect them, which allowed for us to plan accordingly. The contracor (I believe his name was John) was punctual, friendly, professional and most of all efficient. We were concerned about this since they do charge by the hour. He did a great job at installing the shelves, however there was a minor issue with the stability of one of the brackets installed to hold the shelf that we didn't notice after he left because we didn't actually touch the brackets. This doesn't affect the overall stability of the shelf since the shelf was screwed into studs but the bracket is fairly wobbly. We did not call the company back to let them know of this issue since we didn't fully inspect it before he left. I would use Mr. Handyman again for a job similar to this since the contractor was exremely efficient.

We discussed our rates when booking the job, a confirmation email was sent before the job which confirmed our rates, and our technician discussed our rates with the member before beginning the work. As a business, we have to make a choice about whether to be the cheapest or the best. Quite simply, it isn't possible to be both. We strive to be the best and offer the highest level of service and quality we can. We have an office staff to act as a concierge to our clients, and our technicians are highly skilled and multi-skilled. Plus, we do background checks on them for our clients' safety. We reached out to this client, as we were concerned with her B ratings of us in the other categories. She shared with us that there was not any way we could have been better in those areas, she just had a tight budget, so she rated us less than A in all the categories.

Mr. Handyman refused to come and provide a free estimate for the job. If this job was clear-cut, I would be happy to pay for someone to come out. However, with the technical requirements and the potential for a wide range in costs, a free estimate should be provided. This is a deal breaker, so I will be shopping elsewhere.

It certainly is disappointing when the reputable Super Service Award-winning company you have your heart set on using doesn’t actually specialize in the type of job you need done! We’re sorry we weren’t able to accept this job. Mr. Handyman of Richmond focuses on the small- to medium-sized jobs that most other Class A contractors ignore. These types of jobs are most efficiently done on a time and materials basis. Our savvy clients appreciate the convenience of having the work done with a minimal number of visits/time by our technicians, who have at least 15 years experience and have undergone background checks. We understand the member’s desire to get a formal estimate/bid for a large project like a kitchen remodel. However, we do not typically do entire kitchen remodels, as that type of job beyond our small/medium-sized job niche. The necessary company structure for a business that does very large jobs versus small/medium jobs is entirely different. For a kitchen remodel, the member would be better served by a company that only does large remodeling jobs. However, if your garbage disposal is broken, and you want to replace your ceiling fan, and you have wood rot, we're the best choice in Richmond! We reached out to this member to discuss her concerns, but she did not respond.

I am very happy with the work that he did and he was a very nice person. I called them at the last minute and the person in the office was very accommodating and called me back promptly and was able to get me in that same afternoon.

The HandyMan was early which was great because I was home for lunch, we went through all the required repairs needed. I had bought items to use for some of the repair which made it easier. He was very friendly, explaining what he was doing to repair the different things. Upon completion he walked me through for my approval and was finished in under 2.5 hours.
Description of Work: I need a dimmer light switch repaired, three doors had various repairs needed, my deck needed some repairs and the laundry room door needed to be fixed and put back on its tracks.

The work was performed in a first class manner. The business model, however, requires that the owner/client provide detailed written instructions and photographs, because they charge just to come and provide an estimate. If you don't have a very good idea of what you want done - and provide detailed instructions and photographs, this could be a very costly business to engage. In addition, after emailing instructions, diagrams and photographs, there was no acknowledgment that all had been received, reviewed and understood. Therefore, it was a shot in the dark, literally, until the day before when a call was made indicating that the instructions, diagrams and photographs had been received. Although this business does very good work, it is not the most economical way to do business because you must pay to receive an estimate - and if not willing to pay the cost for a home visit to receive an estimate, it is a shot in the dark about what the work will cost.
Description of Work: Took out old wall oven and counter top cooking top, modified the cabinet and installed new wall oven and counter top cooking top. Very professional, polite, prompt and very pleasant gentleman to work with. He did a great job and should be commended for his professional attitude and work demeanor.

We did want to clarify that we do not actually require written instructions or photographs from our clients. Occasionally, some clients choose to send us photos because they want to get an idea of cost without having to arrange to take time out of their busy schedules to show us in person. We are happy to offer this convenience to our clients. Our office staff handles all pre- and post- job client communications. When we send a technician out to a home or business, you are not paying for an estimate, you are paying for the technician’s labor. Mr. Handyman clients are able to meet the technician actually doing the work, instead of meeting a salesperson, followed by a less professional laborer showing up to work. Our technicians arrive ready to work, which reduces the number of appointments our clients need to make with us. While we are a Virginia Class A Contractor, and as such are able to do major work like home building, we really focus on the small- to medium-size jobs that most contractors ignore. Therefore, like a lot of professionals, we do work on a time and materials basis. Plus, our clients don’t have to pay an Estimator’s salary as a hidden cost in the job price, nor are they paying for a worst case scenario bid when their job goes quickly and easily. Our technicians are highly skilled, all with at least 15 years of professional trade experience. They aim to do the work well and efficiently. I needed to replace a can light over the kitchen counter with a heavy hanging fixture. Mr Handyman mounted a junction box using the existing wiring and patched the drywall around the old hole. The serviceman arrived on time, was polite and professional, and knew how to do the job. He didn't have a junction box on hand so I ran down to the hardware store while he was working to pick one up, saving me a bit of money. Because it would take time for the drywall patch to dry before the light could be installed, and I didn't want to pay for this downtime, I let him leave when the box was installed and I installed the light myself later. I thought the price was a bit high for what I had done, but it would have taken me 4 times as long!

We were impressed by this company the whole way. Communication was excellent in terms of updates. One thing I didn't understand was why updates and questions kept coming through the main office rather than from the handyman directly when issues came up since I gave them my cell phone number, but it was all fine. John was great, did a meticulous job with everything and explained what was going on. There were parts missing or not fitting right from the kits and supplies and he would go out to get them himself or let me know what he needed if I was available to go. Do wish he had kept all the receipts so I could see but as nothing was exorbitant I trusted that it was all accurate. He was the one who actually reminded me of the 15% off coupon that I had tried to use on the first visit but couldn't because it didn't take as much time, but WAS able to use on the return trip since he did so much more. I really appreciated that. He also clocked out his time before explaining what he had done or recommendations for maintenance so that again we wouldn't be charged the extra time which I also appreciated. When he finished on the 2nd trip, he went back upstairs to check on the toilet install to make sure no slow leaks had occurred and everything was still sealed correctly. The ladies at the office, Gina and Katie, were also excellent. They called back to reschedule the 2nd visit knowing it was necessary, and also kept track of what needed to be done - I rattled off the list of things for the second trip and they reminded me of the water filter that had been mentioned the first time around. We will definitely be calling them again if needed for anything else around the house.

We were very satisfied with this company. We had a few glitches setting up the appointment. Our original appointment had to be rescheduled because a technician was unavailable. This rescheduling was disappointing to us because in order to be first appointment of the morning, we had to schedule several weeks out for a service we needed sooner than later (we had a hole in our dryer vent). However, Mr. Handyman reached out to us when there was a cancellation, and we were able to be seen earlier. We also discovered a miscommunication in our initial work request, but that did not seem to cause any problems. Mr. Handyman arrived promptly and was professional, friendly, and efficient. We will definitely use this company again.

Wesley showed up no time and was very courteous and professional he looked the job over we talked about options and he went to get the materials he needed and started building.It took 2 days to complete with the rear door he fixed in no time.Excellent workmanship I would use them again in the future thanks.
Description of Work: He replaced railing and post on front of house and fixed a very stuck door.

The two handymen arrived on time as scheduled. Were very courteous and professional. The job took a good eight hours, they never complained. Were very tolerable of the fact that I have 3 dogs, and had to put up with their barking whenever I let the dogs out. The area where they worked was cleaned up after they completed the job. The bill was presented with the exact costs quoted to me the day before when they came to view the job.
Description of Work: Repaired the rotted wood around outside of windows.

Description of Work: Installed wood panelling in a storage shed and replace light fixture. This included help shopping for the appropriate materials, picking up the materials from the supplier, installation and clean-up. On a Saturday! In addition, he offered excellent advice on other upcoming projects.
