Pemberton's Lawn Care

After seeing the company here on Angie's List (they had no reviews), Pemberton's Lawn Care was asked to come to the property to provide an estimate for the following: 1. complete removal of small fallen tree in backyard 2. completely mulch (not remove) all leaves 3. remove tree branch from carport roof 4. mow front semicircle of grass (small lawn) 5. mow down any weeded areas 6. pick up and remove sticks, etc. Mr. Pemberton called from the property and said he would charge $150 to accomplish the above-listed jobs. I asked how much he would charge to also mow down a small, field-like area next to the house; and he said that job would be an extra $20. I thought this provider seemed pleasant and the prices were fair, so I gave him the go-ahead to do the job (minus the $20 for the field, which I anticipated could be done at a later time). He said he'd be able to get everything done right away, and I asked him to call once he was completed so that I could mail him his payment. By about the end of the next day, he had done some grass cutting, removed only part of the small fallen tree in the backyard, and took the wood from the tree. I did receive a cell phone call from his number the same day he did some of the work, but he did not leave a message. I called him a couple of days later since he had not completed any more of the job. He said he had other jobs he had to go do but that he would finish up the work the next day. That was the last I heard from him, despite repeated phone calls and messages left for him to return my calls and explain if he was going to finish the promised work. I'm not sure if he just wanted the wood from the tree for himself or to sell, or if he didn't want to finish because some of the neighbors, etc. scared him off; but I can think of no legitiimate reason why a reputable individual/company would let anything get in the way of them keeping their word, being professional, completing the task, and responding to their customers' phone calls. I would certainly like to know why this person promised to do a job, did only a small part of it, and then went into hiding--very bizarre and suspicious, in my opinion. Why wouldn't the service provider call to explain why they didn't complete the job?
