Thank you for the good review. I know there was a problem with the initial result not being quite perfect and that there was a call-back. But in the end, your total satisfaction with the job is what counts. I appreciate that you gave us a chance to correct the situation rather than reviewing us lower than a B. The overall experience was very positive, beginning with my initial meeting with Mr Starck through interaction with the technicians that completed the work. I appreciated the input of Mr Starck and his staff to improving the design elements of the ceiling for the porch and the window headers, resulting in a better solution. The weather proved challenging at times, but Mr Starck kept me updated as to related schedule changes. I had the pleasure of having William doing most all of the work - he is very good at what he does and it shows in the finished product. Though the hourly rate for Mr Handyman is higher than other services providers I feel that I received a fair value for the cost. I will certainly use Mr Handyman again.
Description of Work: Mr Handyman completed several projects for us: replace wood header trim above front windows with composite materials and re-caulked all windows/siding joints, replace exterior molding on a service door, and install a ceiling covering the underside of our elevated sunroom.

Appointments were kept, job done, looks great. Larry did a great job. Job took two days, because of time and letting the tile dry. Pricey, but hourly rate is given upfront. Job went a little longer than expected, but still within the estimated range of time given at the initial visit.

Initially, Mr. Handyman simply did not respond to my request. When I made my second request, they said that they had contacted me and was waiting for a reply form me. Lie number 1. Upon my second request for service, it took them three weeks (and several date changes) to come to my residence and review the damage. After a carpenter from Mr. Handyman came out and took pictures of the damage (to show his boss back at the office) he said I would have an estimate the next day, or Friday at the latest. Lies number 2 and 3. That was June 23rd. It?s now July 11th. I have moved on to a more responsive and professional handyman service.

Response from Mr. Handyman of the Fredericksburg Region
This member is correct that we never provided him with an estimate for repairs, but he's factually wrong with his characterization of communications and time frames. His initial contact to us via email was June 3rd at 10:53 am. We responded by phone that afternoon and our lead tracking notes indicate that he "needed to consider" before scheduling anything. Our notes show that we talked again on the 5th and scheduled a technician to come out on the 6th. My tech's job that day ran way over and he did not make his appointment for the estimate. I admit that the member was not given a courtesy call regarding the missed appointment and that his estimate simply fell through the cracks. We are not perfect and sometimes, especially during this busy time of year, these things happen. The member contacted us again on June 11th, again via email. Being extremely busy, we couldn't schedule any one to stop by until Wednesday, June 26th at 8:00 a.m. The technician did discuss the repair and took photos to share with me, since the extent of the repair presented considerable risk of shattering a large, custom arched window above a door. I discussed the project with the technician on Friday, June 28th and decided not to pursue the work since I felt it was outside our scope and I did not want the liability of shattering such an obviously expensive window during the wood rot repair. It's at this point that I personally dropped the ball and failed to communicate back to the member that we were not interested in attempting the repair. I was preparing to travel out of town for the July 4th week and simply forgot, and frankly, I still would have forgotten except for his review. I understand the member's dissatisfaction with my failure to follow up with him. But, to characterize us as lying to him is a huge stretch and, I think, a bit of a witch hunt. I work hard to maintain my Angie's List Super Service rating, and I'll admit to the mistakes described above. I extend my apologies to the member but I don't appreciate being called a liar. Respectfully, Al Starck, President

This customer live 90 miles, one way, from our office in Fredericksburg! She is not close to ANY of our franchise locations. I cannot be held responsible for providing her with a recommended service provider. I do not run a yellow pages or referral service, especially for an area 90 miles from my location. How she can provide a review of my service is beyond me. She didn't use our service but simply spoke to our office by telephone. I am requesting this review, this unfair review, be removed from my profile. Al Starck, President

Everything involving this repair went smoothly, from my first phone call to schedule the visit. The technician, William, arrived on time, had the skills and knowledge to tackle the job, had the required materials on the truck, and went about the work in a thoroughly professional manner. Cleaned everything up afterward. He is a credit to his employer and I would not hesitate to recommend him and Mr. Handyman.
Description of Work: Had fairly extensive wood rot around the front door jamb. The technician removed the rotted area and ensured that the remaining wood was sound. Then he custom-fit replacement wood, sealed the area, and painted it. The result was a repair that was virtually indistinguishable from what the original looked like before it rotted out. The technician totally cleaned up the area and removed all debris. Overall, very impressed with his level of knowledge and his professionalism. Although I thought the labor rates were somewhat high, I am very satisfied with the result - therefore it was worth the price. Would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Handyman, and have scheduled them for another visit to do another repair.

Very prompt return to my initial email requesting services. I hired them to clean gutters and repair any broken brackets that they found while cleaning. Took the handyman about 3 hours to clean gutters and repair brackets. I believe that is a reasonable time and he did a great job with both services. I would recommend this company to my friends in the future.

The were able to send someone to my home within a couple days of my call, and he worked quickly and did an excellent job. I was aware of the hourly rate and used the service even though I felt it was a little high. My only problem with the charges is that I paid for about half and hour that he was not working (left in his truck) or buying supplies. I should have questioned this at the time but didn't. He had to leave before completing the siding replacement to go to a previously scheduled job and indicated he would call back to arrange a time to finish. When I didn't hear anything to two weeks, I went with someone else.

They were able to have someone come to my home within a couple days of my call, and he worked quickly and did an excellent job. I was aware of the hourly rate and went with the service even though I felt it was a little high. My only question about the charges is that I paid for some time when he left for about half an hour. I didn't question that at the time, so it's really my fault. He did leave before he finished with the siding replacement to go to a previously scheduled job and indicated he would call to arrange a time to finish. The member’s description of events is accurate. I checked my GPS log for the van that was at her home in June and the technician did in fact leave for a total of 22 minutes. From the location he stopped at, it appears he did not go out for materials, so the time away should have been deducted from the billing. But the bigger issue is the non-existent follow-up that occurred. I instruct my technicians that all customer communications and follow-up visits are to be coordinated via the office. I pay a full-time customer service rep to handle this function because I want technicians focused on work performance, plus, the technician typically doesn't know his schedule for the next or subsequent days, so he has no way of making reliable appointments. The technician who serviced this member’s home had a recurring problem with promising customers he’d come back the next day or that he’d call the customer to reschedule, and would then let those follow-up calls fall through the cracks. After repeated failed attempts to correct this and other communication problems, I have since terminated this technician. I’m sorry that this member became a victim of our communication issues. I only wish she would have called the office to complain about the lack of follow-up (and the over-billing), instead of having someone else finish the job. My apologies go out the member. Sincerely, Al Starck, President

I had several projects in mind, one of which was repair of the roof and resulting water damage caused by a leaking roof vent. The franchise owner and a technician arrived as scheduled to provide an estimate. Communication was much better than I expected as the estimates were clarified (for various additional projects). I had schedule conflicts that would have delayed this repair, but the owner suggested an earlier date and offered to leave the invoice on our door. The repair was done yesterday, just before the rain hit. Looking at the roof from the ground, I can't even tell where the repair was made - it looks great! A very professional job. The replacement shingles appear to closely match the color of the existing shingles (that are at least 15 years old). The old vent and debris were stacked next to our trash can, ready for me to discard. I look forward to having Mr. Handyman of Fredericksburg work on additional projects in the near future.

While my husband is quite handy himself, he's not good with detail work, such as installing kitchen cabinet hardware. Could he do it? Yes. Would he do it? No. Being relatively new to the area, I had no handyman contacts locally, so I turned to Angie's List and selected Mr. Handyman because they sounded professional and reliable. The office staff was courteous, knowledgeable and professional. They set up the appointment, explained the process thoroughly and on the day of the appointment, I was all set to go. Unfortunately, the gentleman who was coming to do the work apparently misunderstood the appointment time and was two hours late. Since I had scheduled my day and other appointments around the window during which I thought he would be here, I was not a happy camper at the delay. A call to the office resulted in prompt action and even a call from the owner, who was sufficiently mortified his employee had not yet arrived and apologized profusely. They tracked the employee down, he got here and did an excellent job. I don't know what happened he was so late, but I got the impression that sort of thing just does not happen; at any rate, he did arrive, did a great job and the staff, as well as owner, was very responsive when I called to find out where he was. All's well that ends well.

Thank you for your kind remarks, and for your understanding about my technician being late. What happened on that was instead of going to your home first, he drove all the way to Spotsylvania for another small job, then back to your home. He lives in King George and was supposed to visit you first, then do the second job. He got them reversed. But I'm happy that you didn't cancel the appointment and that you have such a great attitude, concluding that "all's well that ends well!" Once again, thank you, and thank you for your business! Description of Work: I am thrilled with the work done by Mr. Handyman of Fredericksburg. I was having trouble ordering the French doors with opening sidelights that I wanted from Lowes/Home Depot. They just did not seem to have knowledgeable staff to order the correct door to fit my opening for a custom job. I called Al and he stepped in to help. He used his supplier to purchase the correct size door. William installed it and then I worked with Al to create just the right trim to set it off. The finished door looks beautiful and I love the opening sidelights. The project came in slightly under the estimate provided, always a nice thing. I had a unique request. I was purchasing a HUD foreclosure on a 203k(?) fix up loan. The bank had requirements to be met, HUD had requirements to be met. I needed quite a few random jobs done. From plumbing to deck work to replacing electrical to septic, etc. I was required to get three different estimates to appease the bank gods & Mr. Handyman is one of the businesses I called. I was very impressed with the promptness of their response & the professional decorum expressed by them. The jobs I had would rake in $16,000 for labor, materials, etc... Mr Handyman TURNED ME DOWN!! but they explained why. They work differently than other places & bill differently. Their business style didn't really fit in with my timeline for getting things done & also the HUD loan process was crazy & not to their billing style. (I'm paraphrasing here, it was after all a year ago & change that we talked.) AGAIN ~ I was impressed with their honesty!! They gained my respect! When I do end up needing some house work done that I can't handle on my own, Mr Handyman will get my first call !!

Mr. Handyman of Fredericksburg was prompt in responding to my online service inquiry and scheduling the service date, but the experience only deteriorated from here. On the service date, I had been promised the worker's arrival at 8am, and was told he would stay as long as needed to complete all items on my list. One day prior to the scheduled date, I received a call and was told the worker would be delayed on arrival because he had to do an estimate first thing that morning. OK, I am alright with this. Then, on the morning of service, what should have been a 9:30am arrival turned into a 10:45am arrival. Wow, that put bad taste in my mouth. Already I knew worker would not get all things completed that I wanted done. Mr. Handyman said they could come back first thing the next day to finish work, but that didn't work with my schedule, as I had to leave home for work next day. Apparently Mr. Handyman doesn't consider the customer's schedule in their thought process. Overall I think worker who came to my home did good work, but I think their labor rates are atrocious. I paid less per hour for a computer repair person than a handyman, and another Mr. Handyman office explained to me that labor rates so high b/c workers are multi-skilled and can (for example) do plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc as needed. I only needed carpentry and general handyman services, so not sure why I am paying for premium (other) skillsets I don't need. I was also put off when Mr. Handyman scheduler gave me hard time on phone that I am 'outside' their service area, and they were unfamiliar with my location. If I had been asked, I would have gladly provided directions to my home, and my apologies if I live out in the sticks. Even homeowners in rural areas need service, so please make it more clear on your website if you prefer not to have me as a customer in the future. . Finally, I was told that for my inconvenience, I would receive $25 off hourly rate for service in exceed of 2 hours. The worker was at my home 6.75 hours, and I did not receive $25 off each hour past 2 hours. I received 1 credit of $25, which is not what was told to me on phone. Wow, talk about misleading. I cannot, and will not in good conscience recommend this company to anyone, and not sure I will ever use you again. Living in the 'sticks', I am limited on which companies will come to my home, which I think VERY unfortunate as even rural customers need service providers at their home occasionally, particularly when homeowner/customer not physically able to do all things, or versed in how to do so. But, since moving to VA I have run into many service providers that like to cherry pick their customers, so perhaps Mr. Handyman is one such provider. Shame, your busines acumen does your company a real dissservice.

Response from Mr. Handyman of the Fredericksburg Region
We were 40 minutes late for the amended appointment time, due to the fact that the customer’s entire subdivision is very new and her address did not appear on my technician’s GPS device. But, while we were working through that issue, the customer was called and advised of the additional delay. I have waited for service technicians myself and I know how distressing and upsetting that can be for customers. That is why I have a full-time customer service rep to handle the communications between the technicians, the office, and the customers. Not knowing the customer’s schedule, my customer service rep merely suggested setting a time to return the next day, or any other day for that matter. Of course we consider the customer’s schedule; we were simply trying to find and suggest a suitable time to return if necessary. Regarding our hourly service rate, the customer was informed of our rate and our billing policies before we ever scheduled her appointment. To be complaining about our rate after the fact is irrelevant to the service she received and seems a bit of sour grapes. The rate that we charge is sufficient for us to remain in business for eight years and be marginally profitable during the worst housing recession in a generation. When we realized we were going to be late for the appointment, we offered to reduce her service charge by $25 to compensate for the 40-minute inconvenience. In no way would I authorize or communicate a $25 PER HOUR reduction in charges. She is simply mistaken on her recollection of what we offered. To reduce my hourly charge by $25 would soon drive me out of business. Service companies tend to locate where the population density is sufficient to support their business model. This customer is on the fringe of my service territory and the area I choose to cover. For it to be cost effective to make the trip to her area, we need to be able to schedule jobs in excess of 4 hours, which this customer’s job required. We certainly did not intend to “give her a hard time” about servicing her where she lives; we were simply trying to ascertain that she had enough work to have the drive make business sense, which addresses her point about my business acumen. We treat all customers with the respect and dignity they deserve, and we don’t “cherry pick” customers based on any factors other than matching work requests with our skill sets and on what makes sound business sense. The technician service and the work results this customer received, as she admits, was very good and it was performed within the price parameters she was quoted over the phone. I’m sorry we were not able to meet her expectations on timeliness, but sometimes when traveling 45 minutes to a job, unexpected circumstances arise. She was well-informed of the further delay and we offered monetary compensation for her brief inconvenience. There’s not much else I can do after that. Al Starck, President

After doing the job I had to call them back out to redo the ENTIRE house. Yes, and then they did a poor job when they came out to fix what they didn't do right the first time. I called back a third time and they said the vinyl siding is faded and they could get it completely clean. I agree, a 23 year old house has faded vinyl sidings, but when I was able to go over the numerous spots, that I could reach, they missed with a rag and some soapy water and they came clean. I am in a customer service business myself I know it is paramount to satisfy the customer and I was very disappointed in the quality of work and their lack of wanting to make it right for the customer. I would not recommend them or will us this company again. Be sure to make

I’m sorry this customer is not satisfied with the work we did. He is correct that the first six hour wash was not satisfactory. There were several areas on the siding and gutters that did not come clean after applying the cleaner and then pressure washing. I went back with the technician for the second four hour washing (at no charge) to point out all the areas I could find, especially on the gutters, which was where he indicated the major problems were. My technician washed the house again and hand scrubbed all the gutters on the house to remove the dark stains as best as they could be cleaned, considering their age. The unfortunate circumstance not mentioned in his review is that this is a rental property and he was never there to meet us or to point out the areas with which he was dissatisfied. If there were spots still remaining on the siding, they were not visible to me while the siding was wet, and he never called again to let me know any dirty spots remained. This job was performed in May and this (October) is the first I’ve heard of this. We strive to do every job to our customers’ satisfaction. If I do not know of any problems with a job, initially or otherwise, I have to assume the work was done properly and that the customer is satisfied. We do follow-up calls to gauge satisfaction. I can’t say for certain if the Member was called in this case. Had the Member alerted me of his continuing dissatisfaction, I would have arranged to meet him at the property to have him point out the specific areas of concern and I would have taken care of them. I was under the impression that we satisfied his issues on the second washing. We are not perfect and I won’t deny that some dirty spots still could have been missed. But I did not personally see any remaining dirty areas after the second washing. This is an unfortunate instance where we may not have followed up properly and where the customer apparently chose not to contact me a second time for whatever reason. I extend my apologies to Mr. Thomas and I’m sorry that we have lost him as a customer and a referral source. Sincerely, Al Starck, President

Choosing a company to do repairs on your home can be a coin toss sometimes... you just don't know how it will turn out. Well, this time we won the toss... Mr. Handyman had terrific communication, did outstanding work, cleaned up every bit of the work site and earned our respect for an excellent job.
Description of Work: We had three areas on the exterior of our home that appeared to have rotted wood...a board under a kitchen window, and two different boards on peaks of the roof. Mr. Handyman had a skilled, knowledgeable carpenter at our house the day after we called. He quickly analyzed the problems and shared, in excellent detail, what was going on with each area and what was required to correct the problems. William's expertise and observed work ethic demonstrated a pride in workmanship that makes a tremendous difference in the quality of work done. We were extremely pleased with the final repairs.

Great from beginning to completion. My initial phone call was returned within 5 minutes. I called on a Friday, and the work was scheduled for the following Monday. Michael arrived on time, was very pleasant, and even though the vent replacement required patience (it was the first time it was replaced since it was installed by the builder), he kmew exactly what he was doing. When he installed the new vent, he positioned the interior screws so the screw head was inside the vent pipe. (The original heads were on the exterior of the pipe which required some manipulation of the pipe to reach them and unscrew them and remove the old vent cap). The original estimate of $142 was the minimum for one hour and included replacing the vent cap (I had already purchased a new cap and had it on hand). Michael completed the job in less than one hour, and the bill was $144. The extra $2 was for the caulking, etc, which was understandable. Kevin, the customer service rep, called the same afternoon to make sure the job had gone as scheduled. So not only was I impressed with Michael, the customer service was exceptional! I have already recommended Mr Handy Man to one of my friends, and will continue to reccommend them in the future.
Description of Work: Cleaning clothes dryer vent and replacing exterior vent cap.

I had called Al Starck of Mr. Handyman for an estimate on the repair of my raised deck. He came out to inspect the job and gave me a detailed estimate in writing. He was extremely helpful and suggested several alternatives and fixes. His communication is outstanding - always responded to my questions via e-mail or phone in a very timely manner. As agreed, his team showed up exactly on time (to the minute!) - neat, professional, and prepared to get to work. His employees were extremely courteous and helpful. The evening before they were to begin the deck work, my water heater sprung a leak! Not knowing who to turn to, I reached out to Mr. Starck via e-mail that morning. He personally met me at the hardware store to pick out a new unit and one of his crew was an expert at replacing the water heater. It was certainly an unplanned and unexpected turn for this work day, but his crew were incredibly good about it - working together to get everything done in one visit. I do not hesitate in fully recommending Al Starck and Mr. Handyman of Fredericksburg for any household repair. I plan to keep their number "handy" for anything I need in the future!
Description of Work: Repair to my raised deck, including new stair treads, new surface floor boards, new handrails, and tightening/replacement of bolts. They also handled the emergency replacement of my water heater.

All jobs have gone well. The rate per hour is a bit steep, but working with the technicians and the phone dispatch, I can determine whether it's best for me to call another contractor or to have Mr. Handyman do the work.
Description of Work: I've used Mr. Handyman of Fredericksburg many many times. They have installed light fixtures, repaired my backyard fence, cleaned gutters, buit-in closet systems,m and installed dog doors. All of their technicians are experienced professionals. When I called, an answering serviced answered. They then called back immediately. He was here when he said that he would be. He was well dressed, polite, and helpful. He handed me a brochure of his service immediately. He even stayed and did another job for me which saved me an extra service charge.
Description of Work: He fixed a toilet and hung a chandelier.

We didn't have a clear picture of everything we needed done when we first had Al out for the estimates, and there were some things I was completing myself to save some money. Al was very flexible and worked with me as we progressed through each of the jobs. All of the workers were courteous and spoke fluent English (a very important factor for me). I was very pleased and would use Mr. Handyman again.
Description of Work: We had a lot of projects for Mr. Handyman to complete as we were getting ready to move out of our house. They patched and painted most of the walls and the ceiling on one floor of our house; repaired/remodeled our basement by replacing sheetrock, replacing doors, put in a new shower stall in the basement bathroom, repaired some plumbing and electrical, and painted the entire basement; re-grouted our guest shower upstairs; painting upstairs; cleaned gutters; replaced door threshold.

Michael called prior to his arrival to let us know he was on his way. He arrived promptly. He was personable yet professional. I told him what I needed done and he got right on it. He advised me on a couple of things he saw that might eventually become problems but did not push me into anything. I had known about these things but he agreed there was no immediate concern. Michael was very polite and knowledgeable and explained what he was doing and even gave some useful tips for care and cleaning of the new faucets. He cleaned up after himself, which I appreciated. I informed him that I would be using his company again as there were a few other things that still needed to be done. This was a good experience and both my husband and I were very impressed with Mr. Handyman and Michael Williams. I felt that Michael was very trustworthy and even though we had never used his company before, he immediately put us at ease with his easy-going nature.
Description of Work: We had our gutters cleaned out , a new kitchen faucet set put on and also a new set of front door locks installed.
