Exceptional service and Richard's was the low bid out of six we received. The work crew was very professional, answered my questions and cleaned up everything, even though some of the mess in the basement wasn't their doing. And one thing you won't get from other companies: they make their own ducts on-site! Yes, a metalsmith comes with his truck to your house and he makes all the ducts in his truck so no mistakes and you get a custom fit. It's now been two years with this system and the only repair we've had is just this month when we had to have Richard's clear the clogged A/C drain line (covered on service contract). We had the previous system repaired five times in the first six months. The new Carrier system is much quieter (almost silent in first stage which runs 90% of the time) than the old system and I estimate it's saving me $15-$25 a month on electricity over the old system.
Description of Work: Richard's replaced entire original (1978) furnace (all electric home) and (1992) air handler (Trane - outside unit) with a new (R-16) Carrier 2-stage system.

Richards was able to come out the very next day after we called, even though we were a new customer, and the technician was very polite and professional - even showed some empathy by apologizing for the fact that my kids were having to sleep in the basement since the bedrooms upstairs were too hot without A/C. It was a pleasure to work with this company from beginning to end.
Description of Work: The technician very quickly determined that time delay at outdoor unit was defective, causing indoor digital thermostat's built in time delay not to work. He removed time delay at outdoor unit and checked the indoor thermostat again for proper functioning before leaving.

Third review: Since I posted the below review, the owner of the company called, apologized, and admitted that the company "dropped the ball" on this call. He seemed to be very concerned and upset and said that this was not their level of service. He also explained that the hole the guy made in the air handler was the norm now and that it would in no way affect my system. The sad thing is that I had to write the below and contact the company telling them I had done so, prior to receiving a call. Had they just explained this to begin with, I would never have had a complaint. Nevertheless, I accept the apology as genuine and the owner was nice and pleasant. Initially, I posted the review below. Richards did everything right. Unfortunately in a follow up on the service contract, the tech was surly, angry and hostile. That's not why I'm specifically complaining - the tech knocked a hole in my vent going out of the air handler - he said it was to "check how cool it is" - but he did not repair the hole - and it is a huge piece of venting! I asked him why he did it and he shrugged his shoulders and said there was no place to check the cooling. I have called Richards three times since this incident with no response - the person who has answered the phone has simply said "oh, I've passed it to one of the owners and I'll have them call you back..." Nobody has called despite three attempts. So, since I can get no satisfaction from Richards, I wanted to warn others who may be thinking of using them in the future... I had been a very happy customer until now and, frankly, I can't understand why they have not taken care of this situation. Not to mention that they called me and told me the tech would show up in "20 minutes" and he didn't show for almost an hour... FIRST REVIEW: Richards did an excellent job from start to finish - they took their time to ensure the job was done properly; fully tested the new system; then showed me how to use the "user interface," i.e., thermostat. The installers were polite, professional, knowledgeable, and courteous; and, they also knew exactly what they were doing. Additionally and FYI, I had several estimates with quotes on several different systems from various companies and Richards gave me the best price, highest quality, and were completely honest and up front throughout the process.

The job was completed efficiently and in a timely manner.
Description of Work: Replaced evaporator coil on AC. Part was under warranty, but not labor. Problem was identified during previous service call because the AC was not working properly. Service was completed in a timely and professional manner. We have used Richards for several years and have found them to be responsive and honest.

It was perfect timing. They were on time and took no more time than they said they would take. They left the place cleaner than when they got here. You can't ask for anymore than that. The price and machinery were exactly what they had quoted. There were less expensive available but their reputation and timing were very important.

Issues from service in 2007: -Leak tested the system using 3 lbs of R-22 on an R-410 system!!!!! The leak test should be performed with Nitrogen first and perhaps a small amount of refrigerant. Not 3 frigging pounds and not R-22!!!! R-22 and R-410 are not compatible!!!!!! -No mention of replacing inline Filter Drier (Should have!!!!) Issues from service in 2010: -Failed to leak test causing the whole system to be flat!!!! So what should have been a small repair became extremely expensive because the whole system was flat. -Ignored the fact the system was icing over badly and just assumed that was normal?!?!? -The crack occurred at the same spot the previous crack was meaning failed solder joint most likely their fault!!! -They replaced a cap on the suction line to a brass cap but they left the schraeder valve on the low side uncapped!!!!!! Sheesh.
Description of Work: Richards installed a Carrier Heat Pump in my parent's house in 2006. In 2007, the unit was completely flat of refrigerant. There was a crack at the suction line to the accumulator and all the refrigerant escaped. They performed the service to repair for free but looking over service ticket they had many issues. They again came out in 2010 because the unit was icing over. This is typically a sign of a system that is losing refrigerant. They checked the unit and noticed it was 1 lb low. They did not leak test at all!!!!!! Two months later, the whole unit was flat and again there was a crack at the suction line to the accumulator!!! Needless to say I did not call them the third time around. Some of the mistakes are really amateurish.

This is the first time I have had to re file a report. Originally they did well, until I had to hire a different firm to fix a problem that was not caught by Richards. My blower had failed, which Richards fixed and technician was very helpful. However, when they looked over my air conditiion system and gave me the okay, it wasn't. The blower had failed earlier in the year and then melted the drip pan directly above it. This shoudl have been caught, especially when I asked for a complete look over of the airconditioner. The new firm says the pan (which had melted and burned a hole through it, should have easily been caught. Richards also took a few tries to find out when the part would be in, but the bigger issue was the missed pan that caused water damage to my wood floor.
Description of Work: Had a blower motor that broke on my furnance. They also checked out my air conditioner for the summer months.

They did an excellent job, very clean and tidy. I got four estimates and made sure the components were exactly the same. Because of their volume, I saved over $1,000. It definitely pays to get estimates. Jim is a real professional, even when I called to ask why his bid was so much lower. I had the job checked by a friend who does commercial work and had he rated it as superior.

They arrived on time and were very neat. They did the work over two days. The only glitch was with the hot water heater, it was not working on the second morning and a technician had to come out to figure out what was wrong. He started it up after speaking to the manufacturer, but in the course of doing so, the company realized they had installed the wrong model. I did not penalize them for it because they realized it right away and immediately sent out another truck with the right one, which was installed by the end of the day and was up and running. It was an honest mistake. I was actually going to ask them about it anyway because I noticed that the model number on the unit did not match the contract. I was also impressed with the actual work, it was very neat in appearance, including the outside venting at the side of the house in lieu of the older chimney vented units. So far so good. I also thought that the fix to provide more a/c to the second floor was a brilliant idea and it is working great. I had gotten bids from 4 companies altogether and they were the only ones who came up with the idea. I downgraded them to a "B" for professionalism because the installer who was there the second day was clearly upset because he had to stay later to install a second hot water heater. I was the customer who had been inconvenienced and I thought it was unprofessional for him to complain to me.
Description of Work: Installed a new Carrier Infinity high efficiency furnace, a/c, Infinity thermostat and an AO Smith hot water heater. Also repurposed a return duct to a supply duct to bring more a/c up to the second floor of the house.

Richards services our air handler. So is our repairman. He is very friendly. Had an issue where they air handler makes a knocking sound when it turns off. He tried to figure out the problem, but of course like all good appliances, it would not make the noise while he was there. At least he tried to help me figure it out. Only problem I had was that I wanted to install a programable thermostat and I was never given good advice on which one to buy so that it could be installed. For servicing, they are good.

Technician arrived on time and then told me if would take too much time for him to figure out how to improve airflow. "We're very busy," he said, dismissively. He didn't even bother to go upstairs to look into the problem. If Richard's was "too busy" to work in my house, why did they even schedule the appointment? He wasn't too busy, though, to give me a bill for $125 for his 15-minute visit. Richard's sets a new standard for infuriatingly bad service.

Our furnace was broken. We called and a technician came out. He recommended replacing the furnace rather than fixing the motor. We then discussed the job with a sales representative. He was not pushy and talked us through the pros and cons of fixing the current furnace, replacing the furnace only or the A/C as well. He made sure that the system we picked would qualify for the full $1,500 tax credit. Given that the furnace was almost 70 years old we decided to replace the whole system. They came out the next day and installed the whole system. They were very professional the whole time. They did a thorough job cleaning up, and the system works perfectly.

Except for one potentially bad hiccup, it went fine. They were very punctual for all the appointments (estimate, walk-through, installation, etc), were extremely careful not to stain my carpet, and did all the work in a professional manner. The hiccup: the first night of operation, the relief valve started spewing hot water, indicating the pressure was too high. The water, amounting a quart or two, could have damaged the carpet if we hadn' t happened to notice it. I called, they sent someone right out at 9 pm, he stopped the immediate problem and said the new "expansion tank" was too small for the system. The next day, the job supervisor agreed the tank was too small, said it was his mistake, apologized profusely, and sent a crew out the day after that to put in a larger tank. Things work fine now, no damage was done. It was an honest mistake that was quickly rectified, and I was impressed they came out that very night and volunteered to fix the problem asap.
Description of Work: I got several bids for replacing a 30-year-old gas-fired boiler for my hot water radiators. It was a big job, involving draining the whole system, cutting pipes, taking out through my carpeted, finished basement, the heavy, old boiler, which contains filthy old water, bringing in a new bigger boiler, doing a new copper piping system, and refilling the radiator system. It took all day.

The price wasn't the best price, but it was ok. The quality was good, however I had them also install a humidifier and they didn't give me any instructions. When they sent me instructions I saw that they were supposed to install a control panel. I keep trying to get them to come out and install the control panel, but they want to charge me $150. When my air conditioner went out I had an infant coming home from the hospital, they initially said it would be 2-3 weeks before they could come out but then they rearranged their schedule and came out 2 days later so I would rate them high for responsive. I would use them again if needed.

The estimator was a service technician and was very knowledgeable about HVAC systems. He explained what was wrong with my old furnace and gave me estimates both to fix and to replace the furnace. He explained that the new energy efficient system would actually cost less than fixing the old system due to the energy tax credit program and would also be less expensive to operate. Instead of giving me a sales pitch, the Richards' man gave me important information and facts that I needed to make a good decision. Also, when he learned that a competitor had a lower price, he offered to match it. The installation was performed the following day. We were amazed that they could get to us so soon, considering it was the day before Christmas. The installers were well prepared and efficient at installing the furnace. They also made the modifications to the ductwork, vent, and pipe to meet the requirements of the unit. Before they left, they tested the system to make sure everything work correctly. They cleaned up everything and hauled away the old equipment.

I found every person at Richards that I came into contact with to be very professional. A salesperson came to the house to give me an estimate and information about the furnace they would install. The installation team was punctual, professional and very clean. They were at the house for about 3 days. When the baseboard heaters needed repair, the repair person from Richards, Roger, was very professional and finished the job more quickly than he anticipated. Richards did not charge us one penny over the estimate that was given, despite the extra work involved in resolving the baseboard issue which was not due to the new furnace, but due to the way they were piped originally. Overall, a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend Richards and will use them in the future.

They installed a new heat pump, coil, thermostat and a gas furnace. My experience with them was good. They gave us a good quote and gave us options. There was a rebate on the equipment, so they explained how we needed to hurry up and also helped us with the tax credit. We did not get back to them right away, but when we did they lowered their estimate to even less. They came and had the work completed in a day and cleaned up which I liked because a lot of places don?t clean up after themselves.

Good. They were easy to work with and the installation went smoothly. The workers could have been tidier and more considerate. One worker spilled coffee on my table saw and didn't immediately clean it up - I ended up doing it. No damage was done but I still felt it was disrespectful of my house and property. The "core" service of installing the new A/C was excellent. Richard's also handled submitting the $900 rebate from Carrier, which showed up a few weeks later.
