He said he corrected the problem and now I would have hot water. I still had a problem getting the water hot on the first floor, but the shower on the second floor is scalding hot. He tried to tell me that it just takes time to get the hot water to move upstairs. This has not been a problem in all the years that I have lived here. I had him come back and showed him how long it took for hot water to come out through the sink, but it got hot right away upstairs. He said this was because I had already started it downstairs, so the hot water was already moving through the pipes. I told him that this was not the case and that the water is too hot even when I haven’t done anything downstairs. He said it was due to the old house. Then he said something about it not being his job to fix faucets. I told him that it didn’t seem like he was interested in fixing my problem and that I was going to call Angie’s List. He said to go ahead and call them and slammed my door as he left. It really scared me when he did that. He always seemed to be in a rush and not interested in taking the time to really help me.
Description of Work: He came out to check my air conditioner when it was time to get it turned on. I bought 2 Big Deals from this company for the work I had done. He looked at it and said that there was nothing wrong with it. I told him that I was having trouble with the hot water heater giving hot water, and he said they could look at that for me.

This company is absolutely top notch. The systems they installed are top of the line and function perfectly. The thermostats are wonderfully intuitive. The house was left spotlessly clean, the installation crew communicated clearly, the home office is polite and responsive. They did everything they promised. It has been almost 2 years and I could not be happier.

Richards did a great job for a reasonable cost installing my hot water heater. Jim Smith came out for an estimate the day I called. His guys came out two days later and installed the new water heater in a few hours. They were professional and left everything in perfect order. I would highly recommend them.

Used this provider for getting an inspection done on HVAC unit in a condo unit. Tech came punctually at said time and started looking into the A/C unit. Replaced a spare filter than I had with me. Did some flushing of fluids on ac unit. Checked the level of compressed gas on the compressor unit and said there is a leak. Upon request checked it again and said I would have to get it refilled or else there AC will not be providing enough cooling temperatures. Since its an aging unit(14 yrs) and the 'freeon' is no longer available on market, suggestion was to replace the whole unit. Documented job report with all tips and suggestions and left. All in all it took 20-30 mins to complete the inspection.

I called Richards looking for a solution to an unacceptable HVAC system in our new-to-us 1967 home. There is forced air but with AC only. All of the duct work is apparently run for AC only, as well, with registers up near the ceiling. The heat source is all electric baseboard heaters with an individual thermostat in every room. I don't want to wait for winter to find out how inefficient that is. I filled out an online service request on Tuesday but didn't hear back by Wednesday afternoon so I gave them a call. I talked to an sales person who shortly gave me two options: tear down the house and build a new one or suck it up and deal with base board heating. Needless to say, I was hoping for more constructive advice. He said the duct work couldn't do heat so it would be a waste to put in a heat pump unless we replaced all the duct work which they won't do. We are getting conflicting advice from the other 3 companies bidding on the project, but at least they all willing to help me find a solution (though it'll cost me anywhere between $14-20,000+).
Description of Work: We just bought a new house that needs a complete HVAC overhaul. There is forced air for an AC only unit and electric baseboard heaters in every room as the primary heat source (the secondary source being 3 fireplaces). Richards was highly recommended by my brother so they were the first company I called. He was short with me and dismissive of my project. The salesman said the job wasn't something they could help with so I'll be using a company who wants the work.

I have used Richards many times over the years at my home and rental unit. This call was a check-up and cleaning of my rental unit's system. Technician was on time, friendly and knowlegable. He gave the unit , which was 16 years old, very thorough going over. He also gave me a good tips for keeping it in good shape so it will last a few more years. I highly recommend Richards.

Overall the experience was excellent. The only complaint I have is the repairman didn't have a ladder long enough to look in the attic to look at the indoor unit. He told me what he suspected the issue was, but I didn't get a definitive diagnostic. I was able to get an appointment the next day after calling. The repairman was very nice and prompt. He provided a realistic diagnostic. He was sympathetic to not being able to check out the unit in the attic and suggested I make sure to tell the next service person that an 8ft ladder was needed. I did call the company back to get an estimate for a new unit. They were fast to respond and very contentious about not tracking mud in the house and answered all of my questions.

They were very good. It was a case of a branch that was falling on my heat pump and damaging it. I had a maintenance company helping me out but they told that I needed an entire new heating system. Richards was recommended by a neighbor who have been using them for 30 years. They gave me an entirely different picture of what could be done to repair damage. It did not need a new heating and air-conditioning system. I did not even needed a new heat pump. They were able to come up with the parts, repair it and do everything by code. They even noticed something on my pump but did not charge me for that. They did an excellent job and called me after to make sure that everything was still working. They were upset about the other company but accepted that someone else in their profession knows nothing about heating an air condition. I had got codes from other companies and asked them what needs to be replaced and did not. By the time I talked to Richards, they informed me about heating and cooling systems. I was very pleased with the work that Richards Heating & Air Conditioning had done for me. I have talked to the owner of the company. The technician that came out was excellent.

I contacted 3 companies for estimates. Richard's was by far the lowest. It was about 2/3rds the cost of the other two for the exact same equipment. We discussed all the details on the phone and he mailed me a quote. I figured that there was something else that was missing when I saw the price. So, when I called I feel like I insulted them by asking if installation was included. But, it was! They came and worked in the basement for about 5-6 hours and were done! The technician told me where the things I would need are at (the safety switch and the filter). It works beautifully. The new heat pump is incredibly quiter and works a lot less harder than my 15-year old unit did. It comes with a 1-year warranty on labor and a 10-year warranty on the unit.

When the buyer of this property and I did his home inspection (I am his Realtor), we were told the size of the air conditioning unit was 2 tons. I was certain that was too big for such a small property, as I had just had to replace an air conditioner and two furnaces in two of my properties. Later, I emailed my HVAC company (A rated on Angie's List) and gave them all the specs of the property: total square foot & ceiling height; copy of the floor plan; the materials used in property: type of windows & floorings They agreed, the unit should have been no larger than 1.5 Tons. The outside coil unit was installed inside a fenced area the condo association had set aside for the air conditioning units of the three condos on that end of the building. We pulled out the Carrier installation manual that was in the kitchen and found that it stated the unit must have minimum Clearance Requirements if it is to be covered under the manufacturer's warranty. The fenced in area didn't have nearly enough space to fit all three units and still give the required clearance. Instead of the required 6? + 18-24? + 12? clearances, it has 2-3? clearance on either side and I am not sure how much at the back. And NOTHING was said to the seller's reps so they could address the problem with the condo association prior to it being installed. Now this is something the buyer will have to address with the condo association in order to get it under warranty. We asked the sellers agent to go back to Richards and ask if the Richards technician had measured the property before deciding what size of unit to install. They avoided answering the question and after being called 2-3 times, told the agent that they installed the same size that was there when they came to replace it. That justified their decision to install the 2 ton unit - because that is what was already there. The Richards technician, Tony Williams, was in this tiny 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 724 square foot property. He also installed the furnace and possibly the hot water heater. If we cannot count on the professionals to be a professional and do their job correctly, how are we supposed to know if a job is done correctly? He never got out the Manual S or Manual J to determine the correct size. And sadly, this seems to be the norm for the industry. (I had to do my research to find out about these J & S manuals that are the industry standard). As a result, the air conditioning unit will be running inefficiently, cutting off and on much more frequently than it should, it will cost more to run, will have more repairs than it should, and it will be noisy. So much for an energy efficient and eco friendly unit. I know, because I just replaced my 2 ton unit for a 1.5 ton unit that services 1,300 SQ.FT. and what a difference it makes! The settlement attorney thought this made no sense that a larger unit would be running more often and cutting on and off more frequently. So she Googled it while we were all there and got the same answers I did. Very inefficient. So Richards made more money by selling a too large unit to the seller, and completely lost my respect when he refused to replace it with the correct sized unit and neglected to tell the seller that it was not installed according to Carriers requirements. After all - they were just getting it ready to sale, why should they care?
Description of Work: This 724 sq.ft. condo that is located on the bottom floor was being prepared to go on the market for sale. Richards installed a 2 ton Carrier outdoor coil/air conditioner and a the matching furnace and possibly the hot water heater.

I thought the visit went very well. I would definitely use these folks again and will schedule Spring and Fall checkups to better stay on top of things. I later learned that long-time friends have used this company for almost 30 years and have always been happy with their service and professionalism. I am happy that I chose them.
Description of Work: My air conditioning was not cooling the house. Water could be heard dripping into the drip pan in the furnace, there was ice on the furnace filter and the condensation drain pipe appeared to be stopped up. The service technician, Pete, was prompt, polite, friendly and competent. He unstopped the pipe, examined the inside of the furnace for signs of trouble, and added some bleach to take care of any mold that might have built up as a result of the accumulated condensation. He went outside and opened up the air conditioning unit, checked the freon pressure and added a pound, tightened the valves, which he said may have caused the drop in pressure rather than a slow leak, to which another company had attributed the loss of freon. He hosed the unit clean. The charge for the visit, including the freon, was $140. I had a coupon from Angie's list for a diagnostic visit for $29, for which I had already paid, so the entire cost was $169. I estimate that, without the coupon, it would have been at least $250.

It all went perfect! We knew our a/c was on its last legs so we decided we'd move forward with replacing our nearly 20 year old gas furnace and a/c before the system just quit on us at an inopportune time. We got several estimates and each was more confusing than the last. Fast forward - Jim Smith met with us and advised us as to what we needed and it all made perfect sense. The installation took place less than a week later, without a hitch. Professional and NICE staff arrived right on time and paid attention to the details. Everyone at Richards (especially Jim) went way above and beyond our expectations and we couldn't be happier about our experience and our new system.

Overall I was satisfied with the services rendered, service was quick and efficient. The only complaint I have is not receiving a call after the work was done to let me know if the heat was working again, even though they did let the renters know, being the owner I wanted to know if there would be further expenses.
Description of Work: Heating in my rental home was not working. The tenants contacted me on a Sunday evening and described air coming out but no hot/warm air. I looked up several heating companies that evening on Angie's List, I decided to try Richard's since they had a coupon for $20 or $30 for a heating inspection. I called at 9 am and to my surprise they were able to go to the house by 2 pm. They showed up at the rental house at about 11 am, although I was not present when they were at the home, they did call me to let me know what they would be doing. They said they would try to clean the furnace burners to see if that would fix the problem, which would cost $60. If that didn't fix the problem, then a new circuit would need to be ordered. I gave the ok to clean the burners and to call me with the results. I was disappointed that they did not call me back to let me know if the cleaning fixed the issue, but I gave them a call and they said the heat was working.

I highly recommend this company. Every person I dealt with was professional, friendly, accommodating and knowledgable; from the person answering the phone to the technician who first came out to look at my furnace to the owner who called and gave me his thoughts to the installation guys who put in my new furnace. When I called on Monday, they were able to send someone out within an hour of my call. The appointment that day cost $125.00 but was crucial to make the proper determination about my furnace. My only regret was that I was so frazzled about not having a working heater that I forgot to use the Angie's List coupon for this service. The next day they came out at 8:30 a.m. to remove my ancient furnace and install the new one and a humidifier. The Carrier Infinity 80 cost $2,500.00 and the humidifier was $495.00. They put down drop clothes on my stairs and along my basement floor and worked all day with only one break (until 4:00 p.m.) installing the furnace and humidifier. They made sure everything was in working order and cleaned up before they left. I will use this company when we are ready to replace our air conditioner and water heater. Very pleased with their service and products.
Description of Work: Furnace motor/fan stopped working on Sunday. Richards came out within an hour of my call on Monday morning. Determined they could replace motor but felt it would not be money well spent since furnace was over 30 years old and furnace manufacturer had long been out of business. Owner called me while technician was there and recommended a Carrier Infinity 80 replacement. Offered to do install Tuesday morning and was able to offer a lower price since Spring is off-season.

The hot water heater installation went very well. On the next day we decided to install an expansion tank since we have a closed water system, even though these tanks are not always necessary. They gave a good price to come back and that went very well also.
Description of Work: I needed a new hot water heater in a hard to fit area. They had to drag out the old one and put in the new one and were prepared to move pipes if necessary. It did not prove to be necessary. The 2 installers from Richards installed a new one and did a good job. They were clean and courteous. A supervisor came out to also check on the project to make sure we were satisfied. All in all, I feel like we received appropriate attention and service.

I believe one of the negatives about service technicians is being given windows of 8am to 5pm, or cancelling at the last minute because a tech is overbooked. That didn't happen with Richard's and they even offered a 30-minute notice call so my day wasn't spent waiting around and instead productive. Beyond fixing the heat, this kind of quality service is invaluable as well.
Description of Work: I'm very familiar with Richard's work in the Northern VA region. They are professional, thorough and their solutions to problems is usually 100% correct. In this case, they continued to be excellent and worthy of their reputation. With the freezing temperatures, the furnace went out and Richard's quickly responded, made a diagnosis, ordered manufacturer's warranty part, installed and all good. Very pleased here . . . and warm.

Did a great job all around. My water heater (20+ years old) had finally kicked the bucket. I described the symptons to the person at Richards who answered the phone (leaking water underneath) and we quickly determined that this would entail replacement of the water heater. They transfered my call to a fellow who spoke with me about options--different types of heaters, costs, advantages/drawbacks. I felt like I was speaking with someone honest who had a wealth of experience with this and would give me the lowdown and options. I wound up ordering a standard "vanilla" unit. The installer arrived the next day right on time. He was cheery, efficient, completed the job in about three hours or less, and pointed at a couple of items on the work completed.
