Richards Heating & Air Conditioning was fine. They came when they were supposed to. There was some difficulty getting the part and I had to wait for about five days and my heat was out for two of them. I was fine with the pricing. I don't think I will be using them again.
Description of Work: They determined that something else is wrong, they ordered the part and then came back and replaced it.

From the time I called to get some pricing to installation was less than 24 hours - great reaction time. One ommission though - I kept trying to convey the size of my input and output ducts and the rep kept saying "don't worry, I know what you have". Turns out, the new unit was much smaller than my existing. So they had to bend a LOT of sheet metal to make things work. This hasn't been a problem so far. The unit works just fine. The installer was early and very courteous. He did everything well. The only complaint is that he shut off the pilot to my nearby water heater. I understand it was a safety thing. He forgot to turn it back on though, which we didn't discover until my wife took a shower the next morning. I had this furnace installed and new windows put in at the same time. The house became extremely dry overnight. I called just to inquire if this might be a function of the new gas burner or exhaust. The rep sort of treated me like a dummy and went on explaining how air is naturally drier in the wintertime. He did send a technician out though. The tech measured to see where a humidifier could be installed, then told me that no humidifier will work with my setup. There was no follow-up from Richards on how things went overall. If they had, I would say it went better than average with the above quirks.

The price for the service was fair. They were supposed to get back with us within 48 hours after purchasing. They were late in contacting me to set up the appointment. They arrived on time and spent about 30 minutes on the job. They suggested that we needed a new heating system. We wanted to go through our home warranty for the replacement. They wanted to see what Richards was suggesting and it took them several days to provide our home warranty company with their quote. They said that the delay was due to weather and being busy. They did provide the quote after about a month of back and forth between what the home warranty wanted and what Richards was providing. John Smith was the individual we dealt with at Richards. He was helpful, polite and professional, but just not timely on his responsiveness. Maybe he was put into a bine from the home warranty company. We ended up using a company that our home warranty company provided us with.

Set the job up for the following week, and wasn't sure what to expect. The crew that showed up was great, the one guy had been with Richards for 28 years. The rest of the crew was great too, put runners down to prevent carpet dirt/snags, rerouted the outside lines in the garden area to give us more room, and oh yeah, they also installed that aforementioned alert valve. Great job at a great price. The other companies often try to hard sell on the service contract as well. When I asked Richards they said the first year is all covered, the following year you will receive a mailer for service agreement and can sign up then. No hard sell, just an honest business from what I've experienced. We actually put this on our Discovercard so that we could get the additional year of parts warranty, which is something to consider. Would highly recommend Richards.
Description of Work: I had originally called Richards to come out and check our heat pump unit, which was not turning on. The service rep checked the unit and let us know it was out of Freon, hence not turning on. He also stated that the unit was 28 years old, so didn't pay to put any money into the unit. We knew it was old and was on its last legs, so the service rep called back to the office and they had a quote for a full install in a matter of 10 minutes. The price seemed very reasonable based on what my neighbors had paid for a similar install a year ago. After getting three other quotes, Richards was still the most affordable by about $1800 and $3000 respectively. Interestingly, they were about 20% cheaper across the board. That also applied to the prices for the humidifier and the special filter box we had added to the system. When I called to spec the equipment/model numbers, I found they were all the same. So why the large price difference? One of the other contractors told me he had seen their work and it wasn't as high quality. He stated that sometimes you get what you pay for and if someone was that much cheaper, they were cutting corners. He explained that his company includes this valve that alerts you in the drain backs up and that they are all trained in the system install. I turned that logic around and asked him that since the other contractor was $1,200 more than his quote, should I apply that same logic and assume he was cutting corners? I called Richards to talk to Jim and explain that he was substantially cheaper than the other estimates, and asked if there was anything or other services I should include with the install. I actually told him I was a little concerned that his price was so low and wanted to ensure we would have a quality job and would be willing to pay more. He said no, we do this all the time, its a little cheaper now in the off season, and we do not have a lot of advertising, so we save there.

I can't say enough good things about my experience with Richards. From my initial meeting with salesman Matt to working through a technical solution with top-notch installation manager Jim to watching the work performed by team leader Mickey and his crack techs Richard and Ever -- well, I believe I was smiling the whole time, at least inside. The job was putting in a ductless mini-split HVAC system, benefitting the top floor master bedroom of my 3-story townhouse. It was sufficiently tricky from a technical and aesthetic perspective that two of the four top-rated Angie's List companies I sought proposals from essentially said it couldn't be done. And the company Home Depot sent out said yes but gave me a simply absurd quote. Richards was by far the "best value" -- that balance between cost, the materials/hardware they proposed to use, and their implementation plan. It all went perfectly and the system works like a champ. I can't speak to the other kinds of things Richards does -- aside from ductless mini-split installations -- except to say, if my experience was typical, you should definitely include Richards in your search for a great HVAC contractor.

A few days ago, the weather really started to warm up. We'd been away for a few days and so turned the heater off, knowing it was going to be in the 70s the whole time we were away. We came back home and discovered as expected that the ambient temperature around the thermostat was about 77 degrees. We turned the AC on, but after 3 hours it failed to change the temperature even one degree. So, the next day, my wife and I agreed we needed to call a repairman, but since we didn't know what was wrong, we really wanted to contact a repair service that was offering an Angies List coupon that discounted diagnostic and service calls. Richards wasn't offering that at the time, but a company that had equally good ratings was, and so we purchased that coupon (also the other company could come out the same day). The repair man from the other service tinkered with the interior unit's electrical system to try and figure out why the unit wasn't turning on when the thermostat told it to. When several tests failed to produce an answer, he went to check the outside unit. That was when we discovered the missing fuse. Apparently, the previous technician had for some reason pulled the fuse for the heat pump unit out of the electrical panel on the outside of the house. As soon as the new technician plugged the fuse back in, the heat pump started right up, and the AC began to work. Maybe I should have noticed the fuse sitting on the ground near the heat pump, but I didn't. In any case, that one oversight by the Richards technician -- failing to replace a fuse that he pulled out of our wall -- likely cost us a lot of money. The new repair man stated that for the past 3 months (in one of the coldest winters in memory), our heat pump effectively wasn't running at all because of this oversight; rather, the house was being heated only by electric heat, which is far more expensive than the heat pump. Plus, I had to pay for another technician to come out and fix the problem created by the first technician. My wife said it wouldn't be fair of me to write a negative review of Richards' work, because we didn't give them a chance to make it right when we ordered service from a different company. In response, I called and left a message with the owner of Richards and explained why I was calling, and that I was considering writing a review of my experience on Angie's list but that I'd like to talk to them about it first. That was three days ago and I haven't heard back from Richards.
Description of Work: We had a problem with our heat pump, which wasn't turning on. Richards responded professionally, and sent someone out that same day. The repair man was prompt and professional as well. He briefly inspected the outside unit and then went inside to check on the main unit in the utility room. He pulled the voltage regulator that tempers the high voltage to our internal blower out of the wall and it was clear the thing had turned to dust and needed to be replaced. He replaced the box. The heat pump worked after that, and all was well. Or so I thought.

My only disappointment in this service was that I had requested a new furnace filter as the original was destroyed by another service company. The filter was a washable one which I was not made aware of when I purchased this unit. The size of the filter is not a common size so you cannot buy one in any retail store. The tech told me to just buy the closest fitting size in any retail store and cut it to fit. I was not happy with that solution.

They were very nice and came out the day I ordered the deal. However, it was not as thorough as I was expecting from the description. He basically wrote down the problem instead of helping me understand why or how to fix it. He said the deal only covered him identifying what was broken. He gave me a lot of information narratively, but did not give me an actual report like I was expecting.

It was fine. They came on time and fixed the problem. It was a reasonable price. The worked turned out good. It is still working fine. My interaction with him was fine. He was a nice guy. I spent a bit more only because they had to replace a part. It wasn't much. It was a good deal and I don't think anything was expensive.

My air blower unit would not turn on so I purchased a $49 for a Heating or Cooling Diagnostic Service Call coupon from Angie's List for this company. They called me promptly to schedule the service call and were prompt in arriving at my house the day of the service call. The bottom line was that I needed to replace my furnace. The service tech called the owner and was able to get me an estimate of what this was going to cost me. They replaced my furnace within the next couple of days and again was very prompt and professional the day it was installed. I will definitely use them again to replace my heat pump.

Our furnace stopped working during one of the snow storms this winter. We called many companies, including one we had a service contract with, and no one would come out for days and then we called Richards. They were so nice and as soon as the snow stopped a couple hours later they called to ask if we would still like someone to come. The techs that came were professional and efficient and they could have charged us a fortune for coming out on a bad weather day on short notice but they were extremely reasonably priced. They were able to fix the sying furnace so we could have heat on one of the coldest days of the year. The following week we called them for an estimate on new furnace and AC units and it was another great experience with a professional, kind representative who was honest, explained things clearly and did not try to put on a "hard sell". Richard's prices for a new unit were also very good, we ended up going with another company only because they offered us a special discount for having an install done on a certain day with short notice but we would have been happy to have worked with Richard's again and have every intention of calling them when we want to start a service contract for our new units.

He made sure that the igniter was furnace was functioning well by running through a cycle before he left. I appreciated that he wore protective foot covering on my new carpet without being asked.
